POV’s “Next Level” Round-Table

We have been discussing instituting a POV Round-table  bit on here so that we can get others involved in the theme and subject matter for articles.  Well, my daughter has figured out that we can use Skype for the call-in portion then I can use a program called “Pamela for Skype” to record the sessions.

So – let’s give it a whirl.

If you are interested in doing a Beta Test (that may end up in an article) then send me an email by 1:00 pm today telling me you want in.

I want to do this at 8:00 pm tonight and figure it will be between 30-60 minutes long.  The only requirement on your part is to have Skype downloaded on your computer and know how to use it.

For this first test run I think I’ll take have myself as the Moderator and two other callers for the discussion.  I’ll have some subject prompts (none about Wannstedt!) and we’ll discuss our Pitt Fan backgrounds first.

  4. Pat Narduzzi Announces Quality Control Appointments
    Tim Cooper and James Patton join the Panthers’ football staff.

     PITTSBURGH—Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi has announced the appointments of James Patton and Tim Cooper as quality control assistants on the Panthers’ football staff. Patton will serve as an offensive quality control assistant, while Cooper will work with the defense.

“James and Tim are seasoned pros who will be major assets for our entire coaching staff and team,” Narduzzi said. “I’ve known them both for a long time. They are great men and we’re very fortunate to bring their talents and experience to Pitt.”

Patton arrives at Pitt after being part of powerful offenses at Indiana (2013-16) and Oklahoma (2006-12) over the past decade.

 Patton was the Hoosiers’ tight ends and fullbacks coach his final three years in Bloomington. He initially served as special teams coordinator and assistant defensive line coach. Patton also had recruiting coordinator responsibilities at IU.

In 2015, Indiana became just the fourth team in FBS history to feature a 3,500-yard passer, two 1,000-yard rushers and one 1,000-yard receiver in a season. Oklahoma also accomplished this feat in 2008, when Patton was the Sooners’ offensive line coach.

During his seven-season tenure at Oklahoma, Patton was part of five Big 12 championship teams. The Sooners compiled a 74-21 record (.779) from 2006-12, earning three Fiesta Bowl berths, a Cotton Bowl invitation and playing in the 2009 BCS title game.

Patton’s additional coaching stops include Northwestern (1999-2005), Miami University (1998, 1993-94) and Rhode Island (1995-97). His URI tenure marked his first coaching collaboration with Narduzzi, who was then the Rams’ linebackers coach.

Patton was a four-year letterman at tight end for the Miami RedHawks from 1989-92, earning first team All-Mid-American Conference as a senior. Patton’s playing career overlapped with Narduzzi’s first coaching appointment as a Miami graduate assistant and later receivers coach.  

 Cooper spent the past seven years as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Butler University. His defenses annually ranked among the stingiest at the FCS level and keyed a highly successful period for the Bulldogs’ program.

 Butler won two Pioneer Football League (PFL) titles during Cooper’s tenure. The 2013 team ranks as one of the finest in school history. Behind an opportunistic defensive unit that ranked among the nation’s top 10 in forced turnovers and fumble recoveries, the Bulldogs earned their first-ever berth in the NCAA Division I Playoffs. 

 In 2009, Cooper was a defensive quality control assistant at Indiana. His IU appointment came after he had coached the secondary at Miami University from 2004-08, helping the RedHawks claim three MAC East Division championships. Cooper began his Miami tenure in 2003 as a graduate assistant working under Narduzzi, who was defensive coordinator.

That 2003 squad went 13-1, won the MAC championship and defeated nationally ranked Louisville in the GMAC Bowl to finish No. 10 in the Associated Press poll. The RedHawks topped the MAC in rushing defense (19th nationally), scoring defense (22nd nationally) and pass efficiency defense (34th nationally).

Cooper was the defensive coordinator at Carroll (Wis.) University in 2001 and 2002. He had positional oversight of the Pioneers’ secondary and linebackers. Cooper was a defensive graduate assistant at Connecticut in 2000, the Huskies’ first year competing at the FBS (formerly I-A) level. 

Cooper was a defensive coaching assistant at Rhode Island in 1999—when Narduzzi was the Rams’ defensive coordinator—and was an offensive graduate assistant working with the running backs at his alma mater, DePauw University, in 1997 and 1998. 

 A standout linebacker and team captain for DePauw, Cooper helped the Tigers to the 1996 Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference (ICAC) championship.

 Pitt opens spring drills on March 16.

  7. FWIW Reed, your efforts are greatly appreciated.

    However, considering the ordeal I went through in November and December when both my work and home computer was hacked into … email (on a limited basis), PittPov and Blather are the only two social media sites I participate in. I no longer use Linked-In and never got involved with Facebook, Twitter, Skype or anything else … and don’t care to.

    As it is, I still have a fear that I will wake up some day to find out that all my life savings are gone. When the Pentagon, health systems, large corporations, etc are hacked into, what chance does a schmuck like me have against these hackers?

    No more takers? I’ll be out of the house until 7:30 or so but will be on Skype at 7:55 – feel free to jump in any time.

    I’m also looking at doing a Ed and Wendy King KDKA’s Party Line type show which would mean you send in emails and I comment live on them.

    Not too late you Pitt fans – goodies may come to those who chip in.

      Obviously Steve Pederson was in charge of the whole University, owned the BoT and had the big donors genuflecting at his feet… and his hatred for DW kept DW from ever getting a HC job again anywhere.

  15. Just to be ver extra clear about my last comment about a message from God. I don’t like to use our Lord’s name like that but that was an absolute total joke. I also really don’t like the lol or even emojis that much. I’m thinking I should have used it this time though to make it clearer I was joking. Reed and I are very good board friends for a long time now and I sure as hell would never intentionally mean any disrespect or say something to offend. Not only Reed but everyone on this board. I do have another screen name elsewhere and I tried to make that clear that I am not that guy on this blog. (he’s notorious and fake)

  16. Brian and I just finished the Round-Table and we had a blast… 35+ minutes and we could have gone longer. I’ll post it tomorrow morning and as you listen to it remember that with one or two more participants we’ll have some very good give & take in the future.

    I’m thinking we’ll do these on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings as that is probably the quietest evenings as far as going out, etc.

    If you aren’t on Skype now then get it and get onboard – again, we had a lot of fun doing this and the recording came through very well.
