Notre Dame 84 – Pitt 58 Game Recap

Pitt vs Notre Dame – Basketball Summary by Dan72

Anal Swabs!

I hear China is developing a new way of testing for Covid. Anal Swabs! Perhaps that may be the only thing that could get this Pitt Basketball’s “anything but a” team to stop the freefall that has developed in this 2021 basketball season! Something has to get their attention. I know for a fact Coach Jeff Capel and staff did not teach their roster to play this low level ball.

The 5-9 Notre Dame team blew 8-4 Pitt off our home court by 26 points and it was not even that close in the difference in play between the two teams. I could write 10 pages of the defensive mistakes Pitt made but I won’t bore you.

This team has lost any confidence it had and I think Jeff Capel has in turn lost this team. Not since Bobby Knight at Indiana have I seen a coach chase a player off the bench into the locker room like what happened in the 2nd half when Xman was expelled on a technical foul. You can get over a bad game but players cannot get over when the coaches lose the team!

This season, which showed such promise, may be for all intents and purposes, over! After six minutes into the game I saw such a lack of effort I bet the coaches were thinking of benching the entire first team… and almost did!

First of all, Notre Dame shot lights out all night. I’ve seen ND do this to Pitt over and over the last 15 years. Pitt helped mightily with a lack of player’s confidence so obvious that the Refs should have called the game over at the half. I can’t blame Xman for everything, but he is by far the biggest part of the problem. That and the overall lack of D1 talent on our roster. Pitt looked like a D-2 team vs the Lakers last night.

However, something other than a lack of talent is wrong with this team. I know when I played with “gunners and ball hogs” like Xman, I would get frustrated to the point of quitting. When the other four players are killing themselves running down the court and setting picks and by the time they get set up Xman has already turned the ball over or taken a jump shot from his waist that gets slammed back down the court to start a ND fast break. As a coach I never allowed a single selfish player to run my team.

What bothers me most is that I watched film of Sibende playing point guard at Miami (yes he was the 2 guard but ended up playing point a lot) and was hopeful that he could lead Pitt this year and solve our Xman problem. He’s not even gotten a sniff from Capel. Instead Capel played a new guy off the bench named Amadasun (I think) and he stunk worse than X. N. Allegheny you say?

We can look back to the 76-75 Wake Forest loss as the beginning of opponent coaches seeing how to beat Pitt and thus it was the beginning of the end I believe. We have not a single game ahead that I have any confidence that we can win like seems to be the case with Pitt football lately and that’s a real shame. Last night’s game, like the one point NC State loss in football that started our slide of four straight losses, was the lowest point of this season so far.

Pitt 65 – UNC 75 Recap

By Dan72

Pitt lost to UNC by 10 (75-65) and UNC was better and the much taller and athletic team. The only way Pitt could have even stayed in this game was by pumping up three’s but they didn’t. Pitt started out down by 5-7 points and stayed about that distance, never getting closer.

Pitt got down by 16 in the second half but every time Pitt made a run, UNC just dumped it inside to one of their big men and he just turned around and put the ball in the basket. Pitt offered no resistance. Couliby tried but to no avail. Brown put in his usual worthless effort. Xman made his share of the usual mistakes but even if he’d of been perfect it didn’t really matter. UNC’s three big men just dominated the game in every fashion.

This game was why Pitt had to win at Wake Forest. You are going to have these mismatches in the ACC and this was a total mismatch. Not much else to say except Pitt plays a mediocre Notre Dame team next. A team that has owned Pitt in the past. Unfortunately Pitt will enter this game with very little confidence.

Disappointed by not surprised….

Empty Trips… Pitt vs WF 1/23/21 Recap

Recap and comments – Pitt vs Wake Forest 1/23/21 by Dan72… Thanks Dan!

I remember like it was yesterday every excruciating loss my HS or AAU team had where we knew what to do but didn’t perform. I did not sleep for nights following. What else could I have done as coach? Why, drill after drill, situation after situation, after all we pregame discussed, did my team do the exact opposite on the floor?

I am sure that is what coach Capel is ruminating about today. Pitt faced a team (like Pacific for you older Pittsters) that went nuts and shot the highest % from three point land of any team Pitt has ever faced. All it required for Pitt to do to win was make an average amount of shots and shoot 75% from the free throw line.

Instead our point guard, Xavier Johnson (Xman), took it upon himself to try to take over the game individually missing shot after shot and having nine second half empty trips down the floor due to turnovers or bad decisions. It was that selfishness alone that was the main cause of Pitt losing that game. With those nine empty trips where Pitt didn’t even get a shot, the poor foul shooting, lack of defense against the three and Xman play and still, we lost by one point! Amazing! If Pitt does any one of those things correctly, we win…maybe easily.

Why do coaches drill proper shooting form? Anyone can make a shot from time to time with bad form where there is no pressure. The reason we teach shooting form is because when the legs get tired, and the pressure is on, it’s what we rely on to make shots. Several Pitt players have the worst shooting form I’ve ever seen with X man leading the way.

Pitt had an easy time of it in the first half even though Wake shot well as shot Pitt. Someone on the POV made the comment that Pitt better keep it up because any lull would give Pitt problems second half. Pitt started the second half 5 for 20 from the floor! Once the pressure started, Pitt reverted to form (bad) and couldn’t buy a basket. That pressure transferred to the foul line where Pitt went 8 for 16. Wake is the best free throw shooting team in the ACC. You just cannot do that??

This was a horrible loss but it taught many lessons. As X man goes, so goes Pitt. I agree with the POVer who said the NCAA Committee will take a serious look at this loss when considering Pitt.

As always, from these kind of losses, many hard lessons are learned. I hope Pitt Basketball is smart enough to fix the problems.
