First off, let me say a sincere thanks to everyone who has wished me well. When you sit around on your ass for around 20 hours a day and so are forced to do some deep thinking, it is a pleasure to realize that I have so many POV friends who care for me. I hope you have a great time watching Pitt drag a win back from South Bend.
That said, today is game day. Today we find out whether or not last week was a fluke. Holding a team like Syracuse to under 40 points is not an easy thing to do, and that we were able to do so will be the key in the game today.
Playing them on the road in downtown South Bend, IN doesn’t help either. We’re getting some of the answers to the questions we’ve had since the end of last season, such as: how good is our running game going to be? And, is our defense as legit as we thought it was going to be after the last two games of last year? The first answer to those questions is yes, and the second answer is a bone-chilling, kick-in-the-ass no.
Have a great afternoon and if travelling …safety first.
HAIL TO PITT !!

GAME STORYLINES
- In a series long on history and color, Pitt and Notre Dame meet for the 71st time. The Panthers will be making their first visit to Notre Dame Stadium since 2012.
- Nine of the past 11 games between Pitt and Notre Dame have been decided by single digits, including the most recent encounter at Notre Dame Stadium. In that memorable 2012 affair, the Irish rallied from a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to claim a 29-26 win in three overtimes.
- No. 5 Notre Dame is the latest highly ranked opponent for the Panthers. Pitt previously faced Top 15 challenges in Penn State (Sept. 8) and UCF (Sept. 29).
- Pitt is going against the grain of Power 5 non-conference scheduling trends. Of the Panthers’ four non-ACC games in 2018, three are against FBS opponents whose combined record this season is 15-1 (4-1 Penn State, 5-0 UCF and 6-0 Notre Dame). Those teams were a combined 34-5 during the 2017 season.
- Pitt boasts a formidable senior tailback tandem in Qadree Ollison and Darrin Hall. The duo combined for 299 yards and three touchdowns in leading the Panthers to a pulsating 44-37 overtime victory over Syracuse last week.
- With 596 total rushing yards this season, Qadree Ollison ranks 18th nationally, while his average of 6.48 yards per carry ranks 22nd. Ollison is striving to become only the sixth player in Pitt history to achieve multiple 1,000-yard rushing seasons.
- Under Pat Narduzzi, Pitt is 14-5 when it rushes for at least 200 yards. The Panthers are averaging 203.8 yards on the ground this season, while Notre Dame is yielding just 127.8.
- Sophomore placekicker Alex Kessman is a long-distance scoring weapon for the Panthers. He owns four of the six longest field goals in Pitt history, including kicks of 55 and 54 yards in last week’s Syracuse win.

Look for Kelly to change things up in the 2nd half by changing QBs. He’s probably looking for a reason to get the original QB back in. The QB run was open. The biggest stomach turner in the 1st half was Bookster giving up that sack. Sad that he has to play RT.
LikeLike
Interesting to see where Book looks to go with the Ball coming out in the 3rd. That will tell you who ND thinks is VULNERABLE!
LikeLike
Have to be thrilled with halftime score, but we must be able to pass the ball if we are going to have a chance to win. I’m convinced that Pickett has a bad knee. Pat had a conversation with Pickett and told him, “I’ll let you play as long as you promise not to run. If you run, Ricky Town is my guy.” Our receivers stink, and Pickett is not great in the pocket. So the whole equation is bad. It doesn’t help that Watson is no Matt Canada. Defense will need to win the game.
LikeLike
Pitt has zero playmakers and Watson is such a poor offensive coordinator that can’t see how Pitt scores to stay in the game. Shame Narduzzi hired a guy fired from Texas as he stunk.

KP will need to win it for Pitt
Domers will stack the box and force Kenny to pass
so can Kenny scramble and throw for some 3rd downs
He is the KEY
I wouldnt change a thing on D

blitzing
this disrupts the timing. ND’s O is very much based on timing and this QB is inexperienced
Pitt has already gotten into his head

Anyone concerned about our lack of offense in the 2nd half this season?

Ref to @Ike | Yinz CrĀzy
Ty, Ike. Very nice that my comment in reply to your article (see yesterday’s thread) was met with tact and diplomacy on your behalf. I appreciate good sportsmanship here on the board @POV.
Why?
Why is because I AM SEEMINGLY DEAD WRONG IN MY ASSESSMENT & ARGUMENT CALLING FOR THE IMMEDIATE COLLAPSE OF THIS PANTHER TEAM.
Ike, you took my post for what it is/was: an argument for arguments sake but also one in which I was certain about an outcome of a game that’s proving to be very wrong at this point; defense is stout and RPOx remain incredulously intact for Pitt.
Now, of course, just waiting for an inevitable let down in the 2nd half here. (Please prove Me Wrong, Pitt FB!)
I am no different from the other 99% of our die-hard Pitt fan base in saying I’ll be damned if our Panthers pull the upset and fulfill the ‘Giant Killer’ role claim to fame.
But gotta give credit where credit is due. You’re a great contributor here, Ike. And although I find your ‘glass 1/2 full’ attitude a bit much to digest (this year, particularly), it’s pretty obvious that without your commentary and good natured vibes, we’d all forever, as Panther fans, be stuck in hell for the rest of eternity.
Many thanks,
—N

Mixed feelings. Pitt looked good on national television and should be proud for three and a half quarters were leading the #5 team in the country. But those damn glaring weakness after four years just don’t go away. I can’t think of a worse 4th quarter coaching tandem than Narduzzi/Watson. They got damn lucky last week against Syracuse playing for a tie at the end of regulation. This week – Who the F is calling plays in those last five minutes? And I’m sorry all I read earlier in the year was how great Pickett was going to be.
Average at best. Maybe next year. All I see is a guy who throws 5 yard dumps offs and anything over 15 yards is pretty much not going to work. Maybe that’s the play calling or maybe someone is overrated. Hard to tell.
So again – Oddly a positive day overall – defense should be proud. I guess as long as this regime stays its not worth getting worked up over a loss. It’s pretty much going to be this way until a change.

Great defensive effort by Pitt.
Pitt’s offense stunk versus a good notre dame d.
But in a game this close, the deciding factor was all of the no calls by the refs.
There were a good bit of times notre dame held our players and no call. Also some hits out of bounds, some targets to our players heads, and at the very least there should have been hands to the face called.
And of course the gifted pass interference penalty on their last scoring drive.
Illegal screens by their wrs as well.
If Pitt does any one of these things, they get called for it.
Yet people accept it now because it happens so often that it has now become a part of the game. We have to accept that the refs will find ways to help the teams we play.
I know good teams push through all of that, but if you have to have your refs cheat for you to win, then that’s not really winning.

Narduzzi’s defense will never work in the ACC
When Pitt goes up against a spread team with a mobile QB, they fail

However, some of the younger guys today did look faster and more athletic than a Big 10 Notre Dame

I agree with Ike. To say this game was close because ND is overrated is just being a hater. That team has more talent on its bench than most college teams have starting…I have no problem with a trick play that has another QB throwing the ball. If it were a punter throwing the ball then I have a problem. You may have noticed that KP is really struggling as a still new starting QB. Combine that with an OL that sometimes struggles in pass protection and you get the old school run happy offense that we have. So, hell yes, let a backup QB throw the ball. You should be mad about the third down play call before the fake punt. Game on the line 3rd and 4 and we call a zero yard pass?

Pitt had no business being in this game given their O-line, kicker and QB
But the D game plan was sound (I actually said this myself to press and blitz…so maybe Bates listened to me) 🙂
More important, the kids on D executed and they were disciplined
Speaking of talent
I do think the Domers recruit Big 10 like players
Our younger D guys looked more aggressive, quicker and had a nasty streak today
Pitt’s lack of talent on the line is a killer and KP is just not ready
and I do think the Domers are over-rated
and I dont think the refs made much difference today
Pitt’s play calling and coaching did (too much wildcat that produced 2 ypc and that fake punt)

problem is – Pitt has some very weak recruiting classes and bad coaching
Patterson is a very good coach
and TCU recruits speed
Pitt just needs to find the right coach, recruit speed and change to a spread

Very simple analysis. With inferior talent, we hung with the #5 ranked team in the country on the road. Tremendous effort by our young men, especially considering that they had to overcome:
Several injuries
Horrific officiating
The complete absence of a passing game.
A head coach who made the worst play call in recent pitt history.
No, we did not get embarrassed. But sorry, I have higher standards. The game was ours for the taking. When we are not playing in a bowl game, or worse yet, playing in the BBVA Little Caesars Tire/Toilet Bowl, you’ll wish we won.

I saw four young men step up today and make plays that were sorely needed.
Pinnock – INT and good coverage
R.Weaver – a few sacs and high motor on every play he was on the ffield
C.Pine – made a ffew Wirginis type plays, none more timely than the late 4Q forth down stop
Aaron Mathews – ffearless catch after catch over the middle today – KP should have thrown one more on that 3rd and short before the ffake punt
The bottom line though is Pitt Ff’n lost. No glory in losing. I expect my team to win and if the don’t I’m not able to celebrate. Proud of the effort, not proud of the loss.
Good news is we cannot lose next week.

To me that shows that Mathews was completely under-utilized over the last three years. You don’t learn how to finally run routes and catch balls after two full years under his belt.
Up until this game -over the first five games – he had 2 catches for 21 yards.
4 for 47 this game.
I’m less impressed with our OC every single game.
And someone teach PN about the use of Timeouts!
Good game by Pitt today.
BTW notice how I never blame the refs for anything? Because when I watch Pitt games with my friend he concentrates of Pitt penalties that go our way an I review the ones that don’t.

The lack of sound fundamentals and adequate coaching is glaring when the chips are down.
My heart goes out to these young men on the field – they are doing the best they can, playing hard and trying… however all the talent in the world can be throttled by the lack of emphasizing fundamentals on the practice field; poor mental preparation and a horrible game plan by a coaching staff that would have a hard time winning in the WPIAL.
No amount of 3rd grade foot stomping and on field temper tantrums by our Head Coach can gloss over the fact the coaching staff failed them today.

The Good: The defense, especially the secondary looked much improved. Pine looked good at ILB and the pass rush was good against a good O-Line.
The running game looks good, especially considering the fact that we have Z-E-R-O passing game. Just think how good the running game would be if we could pass the ball at all.
We didn’t embarrass ourselves today…in fact this might actually improve recruiting.
There is no team left on the schedule that Pitt can’t beat if they can pass for over 175 yards (BIG if though)
The Bad: Pickett is not improving at all. I would even like to see Towne in there at this point. Receivers can’t get open, or Pickett can’t see them when they do. I thought we had a kicker…
The Ugly: The passing game is worse than when Pitt played in 1910. The pass blocking…3 man rush on the last play had Pickett out of the pocket in under 2 seconds. Hard for Watson to call a game when he has Z-E-R-O passing attack.

I was unable to watch attending a dear friend’s baby shower today. However, when I saw a 4th quarter score update (19-14), I had to say I was surprised and can tell you my first thought was not negative but the guys played hard today.
A loss is a loss and I still will stick by my 5 win prediction, but hey they played hard in a tough if not impossible place to play.
The problem as I always see it throughout recent history, is that I never see growth from a close one like this. Traditionally the next game is a stinker.
I hope this is a good trend, but I am reluctant to “buy in” at this point in time.

after this game, it is very clear that KP should be relieved of duties
He’s a QB that only puts up 140 yards in passing per game
He’s inexperienced and Narduzzi placed too high of expectation on him
He’s better suited to a spread offense
You are seeing what a bad line means to the offense and lack of tight ends (a safety valve for any QB)
The OC should also be relieved of duties
If not after the plane lands, Narduzzi is negligent
Heather should demand it
with those two changes, Pitt’s offense should be able to score more than 7 points per game
Narduzzi is being paid to win games
and this game was very winnable despite the offense and some bad calls or lack thereof
A wasted effort by the D due to some bad coaching and just ineffective O
I actually heard the Pitt fans on TV so I applaud all those who made the trip and represented Pitt

Enjoyed rooting for our Panthers today. Didn’t expect them to hang with the Domers…
—This more aggressive, blitzing defense was what I expected we’d see all season from Bates. Be interesting to see going forward how they perform in the remaining conference games. Got to clean up Weaver rushing too far up the field…
—Interesting that ND had to go to a “pick” play to convert that crucial third down late in the game…
—Given the pass rush, I didn’t mind the attempt at subterfuge with the fake punt. Looked like Ollison either fell down or was tripped – though ND appeared to have everyone covered. Would have been awesome had they pulled it off…
—Nice to see Mathews get involved — hope it continues…
—I say stick with KP, but he sure loses big yards when he tries to scramble and gets sacked. I’m thinking the pass rushes won’t be as tough the rest of the way…
—Some really, really poor offensive play calls. Way too many sideways passes. Hope they work on some screen passes over the bye week… Will be good to get Mack back…
—I don’t get all the consternation about Coach Duzz’s behavior on the sideline. The guy is passionate and fired up. And they only show him when’s he reacting to something. I don’t see the big deal….

I don’t think Pickett has been 100% since he tried to run over every single player on the defense in the 1st half of the PSU game. I think he can be a good WB, but that’s going to be hard we he isn’t his full self. Ollison was hurting by the end of this one.
Defense impressed me much. I really hope we see more of this as the season goes on (and next year too, as many of these players are underclassmen). Offense not impressive. You can’t score on first possession and not score for the rest of the game and have any hope of winning. Not in today’s game.
I like Pickett, but I think our struggles are more with him and the other players than with Watson. I think Watson has called decent games the last two weeks. Better than earlier in the year.
Yeah the fake punt looked bad in hindsight. I know wildcat didn’t work great, but I’ll almost would have rather seen them try that. I know George Jr. isn’t a punter, but couldn’t you coach him to punt it when it’s clear there is no one to throw to?

This is not an attempt to defend KP- just observations. Watching the replays on NBC when Pitt was attempting passes I saw little to no separation by the receivers downfield. The slants to Matthews worked great, but not much separation there either. They were “quick hitters” that KP put right on the money and AM made solid catches on.
Certainly KP needs to improve. I do put some of this on coaching. For example, when Pitt does a play-action rollout KP rolls out too far before throwing the ball. He has receivers open sooner. And sometimes he rolls too close to a defensive player being blocked on the outside when he has room to stop, plant, and drive the ball. Coaches should see this on film and make the adjustments.
Additionally, the coaches could help free up receivers by using more “bunch” formations or other routes where the receivers use each other to complicate the defenses ability to cover. Quick hitters like the slants or seam routes by TE’s or RB’s. will aid the passing attack. I could go on, but the point is there are things that could be done to help the Offense gain some traction in the passing game- which will in turn make the run game better as well. I would invite the OC to sit down and watch some other college games on the tv and notice what other teams are doing. There is no reason our avg. pass attempts should be five yards or less.

You are right on point. A lot of KP’s lack of production is due to poorly designed routes.
The kids are executing what they are told to do – unfortunately what they are told to do is coming from an incompetent leadership team.
Against the Albany’s of this world it doesn’t really make a difference that the fundamentals are lacking.
Against a top ranked P-5 team they are doomed to be fighting an uphill battle.
Great on field effort by the young men in the Awesomely Beautiful Blue and Gold uniforms…
…poor preparation and lack of the ability to adjust and improvise in a competent fashion on the coaching staff’s part is just too much for players with good, not great, physical skills to overcome.

Just saw the ESPN pundits did a mock top 4 for the CFB playoffs – the irish were unanimous picks at the # 4 spot. So, nd did move up after barely beating a “bad” Pitt FB team.
I use the word “bad” because that is what I heard all week from the media leading up to the game. Syracuse was also referred to as losing to a “bad” Pitt squad.
I know a lot on this blog believe Pitt is “bad” – I saw marked improvement yesterday that tells me this team can win out. UVA beat miami, VT lost badly to nd (and ODU) – Duke & WF are Pitt-lyke teams. If Pitt wins out, the Duzz would be right on for his prediction to win the Coastal and go to the ACC championship game.
There is something about a 4 loss team playing in a conference championship that does not sit well with me. Has that ever happened?

I saw a very good Pitt D but can they replicate the performance against spread teams. Notre Dame was very Big 10 like .
I saw a very bad O. Probably now the worst passing O of any P-5 team. To me that means you either immediately change the QB or the OC.
The O was directly responsible for the D tiring near the end. The D put the O in a position to win several times yesterday. I know Pitt’s O is very bad and for there to be no improvement with QB play 7 games into the season is all on the coaching staff.

Prior to yesterday I would not have argued with anyone saying that Pitt was a bad team.
Certainly before Cuse Pitt looked pretty bad.
After yesterday’s game I’d say the jury is still out. Gotta win a few more games. Particularly against a spread style offense. And score some points on offense. I think that’s within our capability now. A week ago I did not.

I am baffled why the media is calling the fake punt baffling. If it works, it is genius. They obviously practiced it wit back-up QB George wearing #96. Ans it didn’t lose the game .. Pitt still had a great chance to win in the last possession taking over near mid-field.
If anything was baffling, it was the PI call where Dane Jackson put on a clinic on how to defend a pass. That’s 2 games a row at South Bend where a totally bogus PI call played a major factor in the game’s outcome. wwb

I actually lyke the fake punt call now that I know all the details (back-up QB wearing #96). At the moment it happened, I was disappointed in the call. I would have lyked to see the offense attempt to get the first down instead of a punt.
If you are referring to the Pittsburgh media, they don’t lyke the Panthers anyways, so anything negative they can spew, they will.

Here’s why… at that point in the game, there isn’t a head coach/special team coach in the country at any level of football who isn’t screaming for his team to watch the fake. ND even left their defense on the field anticipating it. Granted, if Pitt would have converted, the narrative would be that it was a GUTSY and RISKY call. The ploy to dress a QB with a similar number- who also happens to physically look like the punter- was designed to fool the ND coaching staff (I seriously doubt any players noticed.) As such, it was a ploy better used earlier in the game when the opponent is more concerned with setting up their return. ND had no interest at that particular time in making a play with their return. Since the play was dependent on fooling the opposition, Pitt’s odds of converting would have been better with the offense on the field and the entire playbook at their disposal. The fake punt was limited to only that play and the gamble that the opposition would be unaware. They were not.
Your other two points (it didn’t cost them another chance/PI) are warranted.

Summary of an interesting day of football…
First, to get this out of the way, what a night, seeing both the Hillbillies & nitters go down. Not sure what surprised me more, nits losing at home for the second straight game and against a team that just got beat by Northwestern, or wvcc getting dominated like that against a 2-3 Iowa State team. I don’t think anyone is shocked that Iowa St. won that game, it is well known that they were better than their record, but to dominate like that is a stunner. And Franklinstein said all the right things after that game, but the bottom line is he got the same result- a loss, and at home, followed by excuses; and if you look at the nitter schedule, they only have one game against a good opponent on the road all year, and that will be the Michigan game, all other good teams are home games, they did a masterful job of scheduling their games, but to no avail.
And onto Pitt… I’m not going to read this entire thread, but I read just the last few comments, and will respond to a few of the better ones plus add some other thoughts:
I agree with some astute comments about Pickett, he has a poor pocket presence and may be struggling reading things, he rolls out far too soon, and is way too jittery at this juncture. He does have the tools though to be a good QB, and I do wonder if he’s in the right situation with this staff. Which brings me to my next point, I agree with Chet above, and I’ve said this before as well, I believe Heather should require Narduzzi to fire Watson, and probably the WR coach too.
I also agree with the comment above about the fake punt call, I think it was a poor decision and they should’ve kept the offense on the field, I thought that at the time, but nowhere close to baffling; the use of the word baffling has all the markings of drama journalism.
On another note, it amazes me that our pass blocking can be that bad. If I’m Narduzzi and I’m planning to stick around for at least another year, I’d get some young lineman a lot of playing time, it’s hard to imagine that they’d be any worse, and he’s going to be starting all over next year.
Finally, to end on a positive note, nice competitive game by the team and especially the defense, Hail to Pitt.

DO NOT DEFEND THE FAKE PUNT!!! It had ZERO chance to work. A fake punt only has potential to work when the other team is not expecting it. It is an indefensible call. It certainly is not the (only) reason that we lost. But our HC has to be smarter than that.

Without getting in the weeds it is hard to win games these days when your offense averages one touchdown in most games , your kicker blows his golden opportunity to be the hero and we still have issues on pass defense. That said with a little luck and a notch better play (coaches and players) Pitt could compete with all their upcoming ACC foes except, I think ,Duke who will pass them to oblivion. The ??? is will they. One game with all phases clicking would be nice to see. Which comes first Pass protection or improved QB play, we need both. Only consolation we did not loose by 14 or more points and we were ahead most of the game. It is just the level of Pitt football in 2018.

And a time out was warranted because the Irish D was still on the ffield on the ffake punt. Could it be there was no confidence in the OC’s play calling and the QB’s ability to execute the play that lead the HC to make the ffake punt call?
Just asking?
Ike – I thought the DL played ok and did not get manhandled by the 4 & 5 *’s on the irish OL. The three SR’s played with emotion, but were rather average, as usual. But the underclassman were performing at an above average clip – Twyman, Camp, Weaver, Watts, Jones and Wheeler. The future looks bright for that group.
I would make the following changes to our OL in the next 13 days with the bye week in front of us –
Bookser moves back to RG. Houy and one other underclassman step in at RT.
Underclassman takes over as the starter at LG.
Dintino and Herndon back-up Bookser and the LG.
Duzz must insert the underclassman and gain them experience.

The D looked better in scheme and action. they played faster and had more awareness to what the ND offense was doing. Now is it Narduzzi finally seeing this defense is simply not able to play his D? I hope so.I have posted the D has physical talent and maybe the coaches are actually coaching with more freedom. Narduzzi has stuck to his defensive system with abysmal results. Perhaps some heat on him and his slow recognition to that fact are in play. But the longer Narduzzi coaches, the more his limitations are revealed.

I am still pleased with the good plays that are being made by individual players. To me this started last week and continued yesterday. Matthews finally making third down catches. FFrench with another runback and some good catches. Good time killing drives that should have won the game with better kicks. Best pressure on a QB all year. Best pass coverage for long stretches. Big plays by Weaver and Pinnock. A very strong game by Hamill till the injury. The middle was solid from the front seven. Wirginis did not appear to be missed. With two good kicks Pitt played well enough to win vs the number 5 team in the country on their sacred grounds where no one gets the benefit of evenhanded referees.
I really don’t get the complaints about KP, especially when most agree that the line can’t block well enough, receivers don’t get open often enough, no tight ends, and Watson doesn’t call the “right” plays at the “right” time. The kid is a sophomore who has gone up against 3 top ten teams, with a rag tag bunch around him. This against a team with 4 and 5 star players at most positions. They have got the cream of the WPIAL for the last couple years. Our kids won a lot of the individual battles.
For the most part the team played inspired hard football yesterday against long odds. They got up for the game. Hopefully they get up for their ACC games to come.
Unfortunately ND made a few more big plays than us. So this morning we focus on the fake punt that fooled no one. It was an act of desperation. I agree that I would have rather us go down with KP attempting one more pass to Matthews, but doubt it would have made a difference. Probably another holding call if it was completed.
Anyway the players should keep their chins up, use the bye week to heal and get better, the most important games to come.
I don’t know if anyone noticed but Ford was excitedly congratulating Pinnock after his INT.

I think the lack of TE use as an option really hurts on short yardage situations. Yesterday, a TE was targeted once, and it was completed (Gregg) well short of a first down. Of course, Sear walking when he did didn’t help, but in the end …. the OL / TE has been the downfall of this offense for the past 2 years.
It’s amazing how much better a QB can be when he has protection …… evidence: Max Browne 28 for 32 for > 400 yds vs Rice

The Play was just another example of an Organization having SO MUCH invested in terms of time and effort (see Altered Jersey “FAKE No. 6”) that they were COMMITTED to using it… despite what might be the REALITY at the time of the “4 and 4.”
An ALERT Coach and Staff would have seen the Defense PREPARED to stop a Fake Punt… and kill the idea.
If NARDUZZI were really SMART, as some here and elsewhere are trying to convince everyone else is the case… he would have made sure that Jeff George Jr. or WHOMEVER was also able to actually PUNT.

Considering that we only scored one offensive TD all game, to expect a game winning drive to finish against an excellent defense is a wish and a prayer. While I would have preferred to go down with KP throwing for it or Ollie or Hall running for it, I can’t muster the indignation over trying a trick play, but if Ollison doesn’t fall down, who knows?
I said before at the start of the fourth quarter, I would have preferred the continuation of smash mouth football, which seems to be our strength over the botched reverse. However if FFrench would have executed properly, who knows?
Trick plays are great when they work, but look stupid when they don’t. But when you want the coach gone it provides a reason to be critical.

I said earlier, I didn’t care for the fake punt call and would have liked to seen us line up with our offense. Personally, I would have liked to have seen a trick play out of the wildcat. But I will credit Narduzzi for the fake punt for one reason: he is being aggressive and playing to win. I can live with that. I don’t want an overly conservative coach under the circumstances. And really, is having your #2 QB throwing the ball out of the punt formation really that much worse than running a pass play out of your normal formation? It’s really just an offense play except you don’t have your normal personnel – but the line protected fine even against ND’s normal defense, and I’m not sure who all was out in the pattern but I know captain Ollison (who slipped) was one of them. Frankly, he had more than back there to throw than Pickett had in the pocket all day. George Jr. didn’t throw a bad ball, the problem was that there was nowhere the throw it, credit ND’s coverage guys.
Look at Narduzzi’s mentor Dantonio … he ran two fake kicks yesterday, one successful, one unsuccessful, but his end result was a big time upset on the road in a very difficult environment. Dantonio and Narduzzi demonstrated the same line of thinking — we are going to take kicking game chances to try to win.
I also noticed the “doctored” jersey. Kinda ridiculous that the rules allow for/do not prohibit that, but you might as well take advantage of the loophole if you can.

I’m still trying to make sense of Pickett’s lack of accuracy after his surgical performance against Albany. In that game every pass was on the numbers. Clearly, Albany is no ND, but his loss of accuracy over the past few games, even for the short passing game, is a bit hard to explain.

I think he’s banged up and not 100%, maybe a hurting knee and that is messing with his throwing mechanics.
I agree he was throwing very nice balls with great accuracy against Albany, with the exception of a couple off throws. We haven’t seen that since week one. I still go back to the first half of the PSU game where he was trying his best Earl Campbell impersonation. A QB won’t last a season trying to run guys over play after play (unless you are built like Tim Tebow). He hasn’t been the same since.

I don’t get the complaints about KP’s accuracy. He put those throws right on the button to Mathews where KP was in the pocket and let it fly.
On many passes he only has a tiny window, like the deep out to Ra-Ra, which would have been a good throw if RaRa was 6-2 instead of 5-8. Also, the 3rd down incompletion to Gregg (spelling?) was a tough throw with the tight coverage (poor call, IMHO).
I still say KP just needs some decent protection (and to get Mack back). But I do suspect his knee is not 100%…

I have stated from the Albany game (not practice because we couldn’t see it), that when Pickett drops back to pass, it seems his priorities remain to run first (get out of pocket). Throwing on the run leads to inaccuracies because of mechanics of movement.
This game was not about missed field goals or a fake punt. It was Pitt’s inability to put a college offense on the field. We have been pushing for newer, younger offensive linemen. The issue with Narduzzi is that he will not play the youngsters until Pitt is disqualified from winning the coastal or disqualified from bowl competition. That is the unfortunate truth and he needs to change his thoughts on that asap. Let the true freshmen play their 4 games without ruining their redshirt.
At Chet earlier, you mentioned that heather was in a bind because of narduzzi’s extension. SHE extended it!!!
It is on her, solely. Tough to recruit to a boring scheme/program. Open it up Watson. Kids want excitement and have a chance at the league. Averaging 130 yards passing gets you……a degree, not to the league.

I have one word to describe Narduzzi: GENIUS
Managed to be part of the committee that would select his new boss. How do you spell indebted/pay back?
He’s made millions over the past three years, 3.5 million this year, and has guaranteed large sums of monies for the next few years due to his contract extention/buy out.
Hires assistants on the bottom of the salary range. Obviously more concerned with filling his own pockets than getting good help.
Got the Ox to quit, hired someone to do his job at a lower salary.
Doesn’t have an agent to collect ten percent. More money in his pocket.
Has an annual upset/close game when the bottom is ready to fall out fueling the “give him one more year” crowd.
Those of you who call him an idiot are jealous. He may not be a very good recruiter/football coach, but an idiot he’s not. All of us on this site would give our left nut to be making the kind of scratch he is.
95% of the coaches out there are whores who will go to the highest bidder. If Narduzzi ever gets a better offer, he’ll be gone faster than you can say Todd Graham. Until then, he keeps ringing up the cash register.

Does Pitt have a qb coach? We won’t know if KP has “it” until he gets the help any young qb needs in learning the most important position on a college team and he gets reasonable pass protection. Even hs phenoms need these two things to become good at this level. I’m not suggesting kp is a phenom but he has shown some physical tools, brains and attitude which make it hard to give up on him at this time especially since he hasn’t had the supports an inexperienced qb needs to learn and do the job (and frankly a lot of experienced qbs need just to do the job.) THE GOOD:
* A solid defensive performance – the kind that was expected week in and week out with this coach. Why couldn’t that squad show up in Chapel Hill?
* FFrench as a kick returner. Maybe Q. Henderson saw the writing on the wall?
* Playing a quality opponent and not getting blown out like the previous 2 times.
THE BAD:
* Hate to be too critical of a kid, but Bookser cannot play right tackle. The last 2 weeks were brutal. Totally exposed against quick defensive ends. Maybe guard is better suited for his skill set.
* Kessman giveth and taketh away. Gets the podium spotlight after Syracuse and comes out and does a Kevin Harper impersonation in the 4th quarter. This offense cannot afford leave any points on the board.
* The inability to convert on 3rd down when it mattered.
THE UGLY:
* Shawn Watson’s junior high offense. In games against 3 ranked opponents (PSU, UCF, and ND), Pitt has generated a whopping 1 touchdown in each contest (UCF and ND each had a kickoff return). That is pathetic. What explosive high school athlete would be interested in playing in this offense?
* The doctored #98 to #96 jersey on Goolagong’s doppelganger, Boy George. Bush league in my opinion. I can’t even believe the NCAA would allow that? I thought you had to roster your players, not just send people out with reconfigured numerals. Two people that may have been filled with regret during the game were Pine-Richland grads Ben Dinucci and Notre Dame third string QB Phil Jurkovec. He had a hell of a game against Miami last year and that was it…serviceable against Albany. Kind of like a great first date and no chemistry on the next few. I don’t know if his knee is messed up, the oline is too bad to be successful, or there is something else but I haven’t seen that “it” factor.

So, if the salary rankings are accurate, than Pitt should be ranked in the top 42 for wins and losses, rankings, and recruiting. This is where I lean on this. You get what you pay for. You want a “C” program, you pay for a “C” program.
What always gets me is that many expect a top 15-20 program. Based on what? Well, pay top 15-20 money to a top 20 coach and then let’s talk. But for now, Pitt is, what Pitt’s checkbook says it is. Again, the assumption is that these numbers are accurate as mentioned with Brian Kelly. Last I heard, he was in the $5M per year zone.
Point is, Pitt is cheap. The second point is that according to the salary information, Pitt is paying top 42 money for top 65 results. There’s the rub. Our AD overpaid for our results.
LikeLiked by 1 person
You make the point consistently enough, so I think we get it. The reality of it is that you need to start somewhere at some time to change the program and the coach’s salary isn’t the only factor to play in this.
I am not satisfied with PN at this point, not even close. GIve me a win v PSU this year and I am totally OK for now. Give me a win v ND and I am close to OK. Give me the ACC coastal and I am OK. Only give me UNC and 2 more ACC wins this year, and I’m moving on. It is all about W’s and with me in some cases the specific teams we get the W’s against.
As many have mentioned before, recruiting needs to improve and according to some there are huge problems there. I don’t know about the problems, seems more like opinion than fact but the results are certainly not trending upward. As for coaching, defense, offense, and special teams, you need to start with talent and some smarts. I am not sure we have enough of that right now and so far this year no parts have over achieved.
PN is getting paid a lot and if this season doesn’t finish well, HE alone should be held accountable. If not, my expectation of Lyke to change things is gone. The next few games and then her actions will tell a lot.

I don’t get all you guys seeing Pickett as a problem and wanting to see change. I DO think PN statements generally are coachspeak and are practically worthless about most things AND I do think he went with Browne and Dinucci last year at the expense of earlier development of KP and trying to preserve his RS but I see this game as showing a bit of progress for KP. As for PN and Pickett, the o–line and receivers with no separation and play calling are IMO 99% of the problem.
I only watched the video once but my impression is that accuracy improved a bit and pocket awareness and use was slightly improved although only a small fraction. One other factor to consider is the munchkin receivers he has mostly to throw to outside of Mathews. I thought the out pattern late to Rafael was fairly accurate but when you throw to that small target with that short of reach, you need near perfection. He still got a hand on it but could not pull it in. There were a few other times where the jagoff commentator even complimented KP hitting a small window. I don’t think that was Tirico as I don’t think HE had anything good to say about Pitt the entire game.
I never knew I should hate Tirico until this game.

Pickett is pretty much what I expected, behind a line whose best player is a transfer from Kent. While Ollison and Hall have played well, they are not Conner or any of the other great backs that have played at Pitt. KP has no go to receiver with great hands like Boyd or others. Mack is in the training room. Tight Ends are non- existent. His best weapon, his legs are damaged. I don’t know what you expected?
This all goes back to abysmal recruiting. Millin, Mack, Lopes, Gragg are starters in Narduzzi’s fourth year. How many on the offense will play at the next level? Get drafted?
But let’s blame KP and Watson for not being miracle workers.
You need star players to compete. Canada had Peterman, Conner, Henderson, Bisno, DJ, O’Neill, all playing at the next level. Chaney had most of them minus Conner plus Boyd. Don’t forget Blewitt who is in the record books with Conner and Boyd.
Watson has little in comparison. KP isn’t surrounded by anything close to excellent.

After 7 games, PITT stands pretty much where I had them at 3-4. It’s how they got there is a little disturbing for sure but none the less, they are only a 3 point loss to UNC away from being undefeated in the ACC and being 4-3. Let’s remember that three losses were to top ten teams. That’s right, Huff the thirds big bugaboo, the schedule, has bitten PITT right on the left cheek. As John Popper sings, But Anyways, it is what it is.
Here’s the thing I’ve been pondering. Could the Duke game be the most important game in Narduzzi’s head coaching career? I think it might be. PITT is 2-1 in the ACC Coastal which is playing out to be really average and all games are both winnable and ugh lose-able for PITT.
Narduzzi has a well timed week off to get healthy and hopefully wiser. The offense needs fixed and fixed fast. If he can put together a couple of wins in a row next two games as Virginia Tech rolls into town and be at 4-1we might to see a nice crowd late in the season for a change. I am disappointed with Narduzzi’s offensive line and TE recruiting. No doubt it needs to improve.
However, this continuous delusion of grandeur from you Pitt alums that this program should be a Top 20 entity is crazy. Overall, it has been AT BEST an above average program over the past 35 years with one 10 win season in that time period …. and the coach that delivered that was fired the year after.
Further, the current HC has without question played the toughest overall OOC schedule since he has been here.
2015: Iowa and ND
2016/2017: PSU and OK St
2018: PSU/UCF/ND
Everyone of these teams had hovered or finished in the top 12 rankings. There is no other P5 non-independent program that has come near this when it comes to difficulty.

Actually I think Borboly is doing a decent job sprinkling in the younger O-lineman this year. There’s good talent on the team, I’m a believer that the O-line is the one unit it takes the longest to see the field unless of a special talent. Although I would say this is one of Narduzzi’s biggest weakness and that is not getting the backups more experience with all positions. Each year he starts from scratch to much for me.

I’m pretty sure the slant route that we ran so successfully with Aaron Matthews is a combination route with a running back going into the flat (I.e., a sideways pass). If ND calls the right defense to defend it — by not having the corner responsible for making that play — then Pickett’s read would be to dump it to the running back. Problem is, if the corner is not running with the wide receiver, he is likely sitting there playing a cover 2 type technique just waiting to make the play on the running back. Most offenses are designed to “take what the defense gives you” and unfortunately a good defense won’t give you much other than the safety valve receiver running sideways behind the line of scrimmage.
LikeLike
Makes sense. I’m sure ND was lying in the weeds looking for that slant to Mathews, but it actually seemed to be open when we went to Hall in the flat. I could be wrong – just got a glimpse of Mathews on the replay.
Course throwing sideways to the elusive Shady or Ray is one thing; sideways to Hall or Ollison isn’t too tough to defend.
Which goes back to the disappointment with the RB recruiting. We need to find an elusive back…
Remember how the keys to Wanny’s good teams were mainly the outstanding RBs on offense and the excellent DEs on defense. With one or two exceptions, he filled in around them with average to good talent, and nothing special QBs…

I’m not an X and O guy so much but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express one night a long time ago but I will say this. Watson and PITT need to get the LBer’s the heck off the line of scrimmage. I thought that was the point of a good running game? Bring them up in the box and throw over them. It seems to me that PITT draws the linebackers in and then continue to dump passes off. I don’t think that’s only because of the O-line either. There is a combination of factors causing this problem, including KP not recognizing the defense well enough, the WR’s not getting separation and schematics. The field is 45 yards wide but 100 yards long, use it all… ike

Anon, it is no delusion that Pitt should be a top 20 program. Just some points to consider: 1) over the past 35 years Pitt has placed many players into the NFL. Pitt just needs to recruit more of them; 2) Over these same 35 years, Pitt has performed many upsets of good football teams, so with average talent they can still rise up and beat someone pretty good; 3) the recently quoted statistic that Pitt has lost more single digit games than any other FBS school suggests that Pitt is usually competitive, but may be slightly lacking in player talent or more likely in good coaching. The list of failed Pitt coaches going elsewhere and being successful is very small; 4) Pitt has not done a good job of searching for and selecting good coaching talent; they have failed to recognize the importance of hiring head coaches with previous HC experience, and paying for good assistants. This can change with the right AD in place.

everything you pointed out above is over 35 years, yet Pitt has finished in the Top 20 only once since 1990. And there has been 7 HCs in that period. (and I didn’t count Hayward)
Now although Pitt didn’t win 10 games since 82 (except for 2009), they won their share in the mid-late 80s. And the reason why is that there were still plenty of quality Western PA FB recruits back then.

Credit where credit is due. Narduzzi had a nice game plan going into ND. Yes he is very knowledgeable with Kelly so that is a factor. But Watson has to go and It does seem Narduzzi after a couple of blowouts knew another one and that may be a game changer. He is aware of where the program is right now and knows it is not where it should be. the question is what changes are made to elevate Pitt football. That game did buy him some room so if Pitt can find some semblance of a passing game, the coastal is not unwinnable.

Do you honestly think Narduzzi would retort “thank you Kenny Pickett for expressing your feelings”. “You are so perfect cupcake and to reward your candor, I will start you until your 6th year of eligibility, no matter what you say bad about me?” C’mon now. It’s okay to see the positives in another disappointing year thus far, but this one went a bit too far in my book brother.
Those that predicted 10-2 and 9-3 are toast. The 8-4’s are next, but I am holding out hope that they can get on a roll. But as gc pointed out last week, a one game winning streak appears to now qualify as momentum. Ugggh!
Before I get blasted for being negative, I go to the mat with Pitt sports and have since the 70’s, especially working in hostile areas overrun by hoopies and buckears. I go to high school games wearing pitt gear when I know we have a chance on a player as I most recently did with Reeves. I don’t expect anything in return except honesty in return. Honestly, we have been bad for a long, long time. I do believe Pitt could have it all but chooses not to, so shame on them. Go 3 hours in most directions (not north) and you have universities committed to winning and we are the laughingstock.

ike, you must have missed my comment from last night: “I’m one POVer who is not out for Narduzzi’s scalp. I didn’t want Foge’s or even Hackett’s scalp. I just want Pitt to win. Granted the future looks bleak with this latest recruiting class. But the effort against ND was good and let’s see the rest of the season play out.” Doesn’t this comment sound like I’m agreeing with you?

I know VOR,.
Huff the third. Yeah I believe the kid. You don’t use words like LOVE when you can just say He’s the coach….. That’s what I mean about nitpicking…. and cherry picking.

I am not syaing i don’t believe him either. What I am saying is that kids aren’t going to say anything bad if they know what they say could be career limiting.
At the end of the day, the high ranked kids commit to a coach, so they better like them, not a school for the most part. Except for the ND’s, Stanford, OSU, Alabama blue bloods.

Huff III, Nick Saban is the highest paid college football coach. If Alabama loses a game and falls to number 2, is Saban overpaid?
