Two In, One Out

Pitt landed two commits in the last day. One is a 2022 linebacker. 5.7 three star!!! (and let me tell you he looks fast on Tape)

Another is a 2023 WR. Unranked. What? Booo…. (kidding kidding…if there is one thing this staff has shown it’s that their talent evaluation is not too shabby on these under-the-radar guys)

Welcome to Pitt Gentlemen

2023 WR – Zion Fowler

And AJ Davis moving on….I never really felt that he fulfilled his potential, nonetheless this comes as a bit of a surprise.

  1. Our current 2022 recruiting class is underwhelming. Hopefully a few of the 150 players who attended Saturday will be swayed by the tremendous experience that they had. We have certainly uncovered some 2 star gems (Sir Vocea Dennis being the most recent), but if we want to be a consistent top 15 program, we need more 4 and 5 star recruits.

    1. Although Sir Vocea Dennis has made a number of great plays this year, his interception for a touchdown is by far my favorite. Imagine this, as Clemson is driving for what would have been the tying score, Dabo is thinking, “I remember in 2016 when Pitt killed us with all those surprise shovel passes. I’m going to fool that bunch of 2 and 3 stars by using that same play on them, seize back momentum and laugh all the way to victory.” Well, little did Dabo know Pitt practices what it preaches. First and last shovel pass of the game.

  2. FWIW Three freshman from the 2021 Class have seen the field this year. (that I’m aware of). Two have made significant contributions.

    RB Hammond – 5.6
    TE Bartholomew – 5.5
WR Jaden Bradley – 5.5. Registered a few catches during the blowout games.

2020 has a higher penetration of contributors & promising prospects (as you’d expect)

    DE Dayon Hays – 5.8
DB Rashad Battle – 5.8 (made two deep before getting injured)
    WR Jaylon Barden – 5.7
WR Jordan Addison – 5.7 – (leads country in TD’s)
LB Bangally Kamara – 5.6 – Special teams contributor on a deep LB unit
    RB – Abanikanda 5.6 – leading rusher
    K – Ben Sauls – Kickoffs (okay yea he’s the kicker…)

    1. The big difference to me is that in 2020, the players were given an extra year to play due to COVID-19 and eligibility was not taken away based on the number of games played.

In 2021, playing a certain # of games means the FR redshirt is burned (I believe 4). Pitt is better over the long run when players stay for 4 & 5 years.

  3. there couldn’t have been much separation between V Davis and AJ and from what I saw it rarely made sense how much more field V saw

V Davis needs to stop the chop blocks

Saturday we need a clean game, last year’s game was a mess in that regard

  4. AJ Davis seemed like a player who did everything right on the field, but lacked a step of quickness to contribute consistently at this level.

He doesn’t have the quickness to be rated as a 4-star. I think if he moves down a bit in competition level, he could be an outstanding all-purpose back for some school.

    Go Pitt.

    1. The thing I always liked about him was his balance. But I agree he just wasn’t fast. And he never really bulked up or had the right demeanor to be a power back. If he could have gotten to 235 and not lost a step and really developed a punishing running style he might have turned into something, (in my uneducated opinion)

  5. AJ hasn’t gotten on the field much (any?) this year. I wonder if his pass blocking never came up to standards. I’m just glad Vince isn’t leaving. VD is much more conducive to humorous comments than is AJ.

  6. The 2022 class needs some more O-linemen, but some of these kids will be bumped to four stars. Tons to like with Baer, the receivers, the D-linemen and the speedy RB from Tampa.

It’s a small class now filled with yesterday’s commitment. Anyone added hereafter will mean there will have to be attrition.

  7. I have developed an appreciation for VD this year….kid is way undersized but he can block and catch the FB…I haven’t seen him fumble either and who could blame him for going low to block a 250-300 lb. tackler….that used to be a part of the game “back n the day!”

      1. Van Dyke is a 2020 Rivals 4.8 4*. Some Miami fans are looking forward to 2021 Rivals 6.0 4* – Jake Garcia. The last I heard, Garcia is injured and not expected back until sometime in November. That time frame could be dubious. Clemson’s RB Will Shipley was supposed to be out until November. He played against Pitt.

If there is a true QB competition in the future, wouldn’t be surprised the loser hits the portal.

  8. It is pretty simple, keep winning and the recruiting will improve. Kids want to play for winners. Same thing holds true for the OCS and attendance at Heinz Field.

If Pickett continues his incredible output all season, even Whipple should be able to recruit a 4 or 5 star quarterback. Unfortunately it will not be in the 2022 class as it is way too late for that.

In what I would consider a bad sign, I actually have hope we can beat Miami. On the other hand I would not be totally surprised if we lost.

  9. I just don’t feel real good about A.J. Davis leaving. Maybe they saw enough of him in his early years, but I am not convinced VD is a better back than him. Davis’ yards per carry are better, I think, and I would rather have his size protecting Pickett rather than the Flea.

I’m not aware of any problems with attitude or in the locker room, but would certainly agree with his decision to leave based on his playing time. Pitt’s recruiting of RBs seems questionable over the years, with too many busts at a position where the skills should be obvious in high school. They seem to have gotten a couple of good ones in Izzy and Hammond, but that is not good enough if they recruit one or two each year.

    1. Whaaaaaaaaaat. This guy has 2 carries for the year and is a Senior and your worried he’s leaving.

The Flea is 100 times the pass blocker of the other Davis. Which is one of the reasons, Flea gets PT.

      Both written by Neil Diamond!

Does this lyric apply to Pitt fans over the years or what?

“I thought love was more or less a givin’ thing
The more I gave, the less I got,

His contributions since have been minimal. I wish him well. We still have Dan Carter and T Sibley as insurance this year

Pitt-Miami is always played with a Miami advantage and if you don’t believe me just look at the records. In the years 2010-2020 Pitt beat Miami twice. Focus, work hard, and take nothing for granted. Can They? YES.

Will They? Wait and see. Thats a big, big ask. Until these last few games, this team, this whole program has not handled success well.

Ill be there every week hoping for the best. But expecting a playoff spot based on what the team has done so far and knowing what lies ahead is a stretch too far for me. One game at a time.

    Georgia
    Alabama
    Big 10 winner
    Big 12 winner

So, in addition to winning out, Pitt would need at least 4 of those teams to lose at least one more game. Possible? Yes. Probable? No.

  23. My point with A.J. Davis is that once the coaches make decisions the players don’t seem to get another chance. Think how much better Izzy would be this year if he was given more carries last year and earlier this year. How do you improve pass protection without playing? Davis is no loss this year based on production, but what about potential? Isn’t it easier to develop a 4 star already on the roster that to recruit a new one?

    Like

    1. How do you improve pass protection without playing? Well you show it in practice. But pass protection was not an issue for AJ. When he ran the ball he was noticeably slower than the other backs.

Just because somebody rated him a 4-star doesn’t mean he’s fast/quick enough. It would be total coaching incompetence to play AJ over Vincent, Izzy, Hammond, or Sibley.

I posted at the beginning of the season, when AJ showed up on the 2-deep, that if we see AJ out there then Coach Powell should be replaced…

  24. PITT usually get the leftover 4 star players and that’s why a lot of them flame out at PITT. PITT also gets the occasional 4 or 5 * player when the player is born in Pittsburgh and a lifelong fan of PITT. A few more wins a season could help PITT be more of a national recruiter then they are now.

Pretty sure E Donald has seen a little playing time as a true freshman?

Don’t hold back enjoying this season, it could end at any time. Lots of people think that it is some sort of jinx to talk about PITT’s accomplishments so far. Meantime I’m sittin back enjoying every minute of all this.

I know we have a pretty good football team, good enough to beat anyone left on the schedule, but I have been saying all year any of those teams is capable of beating Pitt. So far we have been getting more big plays than the other guys on offense and defense. Looks like we have lost two of those guys making big plays, and Miami has just lost one.

Then after a late dinner, I turned on ESPN tv and watch the College FB Show with Herbstreet (tOSU) and Pollack (Georgia). Pollack chose Pitt as his hot riser and mentioned Pitt was the front runner to take the ACC title in 2021.

  29. The key (IMO) to beating the U on Saturday will be our D. The FR QB will be out to make a name for himself and the front 7 MUST pressure this kid on every play. We have fresh legs with a 3 deep at both DT spots. Our DE’s have been underwhelming except for Haba. Guys like Alexander, Hayes and Morgan need to rise up to the occasion and deliver with authority. Problem is Miami has two starting tackles who are projected as 2nd / 3rd round NFL draft picks. Is it time to unleash the 2nd coming of a “Donald”? I say let the three FR 4* DE’s play if the others aren’t producing results.

The LB’s need to lead the way by tackling well and often. Davis, Bright, Campbell, Dennis, Petrishen, Pine and George must be around the ball on every play, hitting the holes on runs and the QB on throws. Depth and fresh legs on D will win this game.

KP8 should direct enough good plays on O to win this game. The D needs stops, hops and pops.

And Syracuse also has Tucker, a terrific RB. These four schools and Duke have lousy points against defenses, so Pitt should be able to score with their A-game offense, but can Pitt’s D stop their O? I want Pitt to avoid having to play catch up if at all possible. Don’t take any team lightly. Pound away, tackle sure and hard in space, avoid dropped passes, and be on the positive side in turnovers. Injuries sustained are an unknown factor, however. I hope no team will go after our top guys the way Clemson did, deliberately or not. Okay, Go Pitt!

Great running backs and wide receivers have it right away unlike linemen that take time to grow into the position. AJ never moved the pile and broke tackles like Izzy and Hammond are doing.

AJ is doing the right thing for him. Hoping he finds a good spot and does well.

So, the list of voting coaches includes the Duzz & Franklin. Assuming that you are allowed to vote for your own team, that means the Duzz rated Pitt 19th or higher. Who could possibly rate PSU 4th—except, of course, Franklin. That is laughable. He should be excluded from voting.

  36. I wish AJ well, but him leaving has minimal impact on Pitt. Vincent plays more because he runs harder and pass protects better and doesn’t fumble. AJ had a penchant for fumbles and as was mentioned did not hit the hold hard. Vincent, I don’t think is a great runner, but he’s a safe runner. He also pass protects very well. Izzy would play more if he pass protected better. In Pitt’s system the run sets up the pass. The threat of the run is all they need, not really ypc. The coaching staff saw AJ as a bit of a liability I believe. He started the season. The coaching staff showed the appreciated him. He just wasn’t one of our best running backs. A numbers game. Good luck, AJ.

This week the Coveted Fifth Spot is the Coveted Ninth Spot, as in nine overtimes. An 11 a.m. Central contest that became the first game to truly test the new OT rules produced 38 total points despite including nine (!) extra periods of football. And afterward Illinois learned it had lost its quarterback for the remainder of the season and Pin State head coach James Franklin ended up answering more questions about the USC job opening than the game itself. Illini coach Bret Bielema might call it “borderline erotic,” but we’re calling it below-the-line esoteric.

Saw this in an AZ article. Kind of sounds familiar…

“Conner was invaluable two weeks ago during a game-closing, 11-play, 93-yard scoring drive against the Browns. He ran six time for 40 yards during the series, which chewed up nearly half of the entire fourth quarter and demoralized the Browns and their fans at FirstEnergy Stadium.

It was a drive the Cardinals still talk about today.”

    Go Pitt.

  40. Just watched the Pitt “Field Pass” highlights for the Clemson game. Not ashamed to admit I was so proud of my Pitt Panthers it brought a tear to my eye…

    Go Pitt.

PS: If you watch it, check out that catch, move and run by Stovall – a truly exceptional play.

  41. Kenny Pickett has been very busy this week giving interviews on a multitude of shows. Hopefully his preparations for the Miami game has not suffered for it.

    1. I listened to the Kenny Pickett Show at lunch today – (will be out later as a Podcast).
He indicated that at the beginning of each week, EJ goes over the week’s requests and they work to make sure its not too much.

  42. We all know how teams that are experiencing the sudden attention that Pitt is getting can lay an egg the next game. Not to mention that their opponent can get fired up to beat such a team. Let’s hope that Pitt’s maturity is sufficient to overcome this.

  43. Duzz was interviewed by Cook and Starkey today on The Fan.
Thought it was a good interview. A lot of praise of the fanbase to start off and some discussion about Canes QB Van Dyke.

Here is a link to the website. Their show is listed at the bottom of the page in the guide. The Duzz interview occurs around noon and went perhaps 10-15 min.

Following the interview, Starkey seemed a bit more enthused. Predictably, Cook gave begruding, curmudgeonly props….you could tell it bugged him – haha.

  44. I think the Miami game will define this teams mental make up moving forward.
There is a unique incredibly focused mentality for teams in any sport that make unstoppable runs during a season. They gain a confidence that makes them a close team, a team with swagger and a team focussed to overcome adversity. A win over Miami lifts this team another notch. It puts them in the zone for success the rest of the season.
