Prediction Thread: Pitt at North Carolina

Well, this one is going to be interesting isn’t it? Pitt usually loses at least one game it shouldn’t with our loss to Georgia Tech (according to the odds makers) then wins one against some who looks a lot stronger than us. In this case that is the upcoming match with the NC Tarheels.

Let’s hope that annual upset win for Pitt happens in Chapel Hill on Saturday night. The kickoff is 8:00pm and our defense really must be ready to play if we have any chance with this one.

I did go back to our predictions against GT and UL and very few on here picked either of those two teams to beat us. Let’s see how that train of thought goes for this game.

Put down your prediction in the comments below please.

Here is mine…We’ll score points against NC but it won’t be enough. The NC QB May is going to rip our pass defense apart with 4+ TDs. Slovis will play a bit better against a below average defense but in vain.

NC – 48   Pitt – 27

  1. Without narduzzi, Heather, Gallagher, Pitt BOT and Slovis, Pitt wins 100 to zero.

My tardis told me that from an alternative universe.

  3. Our defense must play stellar. Our offense and QB must not turn the ball over. The refs must let the players play. Then we have a chance. US 34 – Them 27

  4. I wouldn’t touch this game with a ten foot pole in terms of betting and honestly have no idea what will happen tomorrow….thank God Larry Fedora isn’t coaching UNC because he could beat us in football, corn hole, road walking…you name it.

Will Izzy run for 200 yards or get hurt? Will Slovis complete passes of more than ten yards or will he constantly be on his wallet? Will Drake Maye torch the Pitt secondary who will be stranded on their islands?

Why do the pro betters like Pitt? I can’t find a reason to. Let’s hope for our “annual upset!”

  5. The line is too low. If NC was soo good, they would be a far heavier favorite. That’s why the line is off. 80 percent of the time my professional acquaintances win on games like this. Pitt is easy money it would appear. I won’t touch this game.

  6. So if Louisville was the crossroads game what do you call this one?

The main question is can Pitt stop shooting itself in the foot and finally live up to it’s potential?

I have no idea but it does not look good.

    1. Narduzzi claims his team is undefeated because of this shooting in the foot. You do know how silly this sounds. A well compensated coach has no excuses. Ask Dabo.

  7. Does anyone else feel like this year is a replay of Paris Fords last year? Too much shooting their mouths off ( especially the HC) and not enough playing.
Since I finished Nelson DeMille’s latest the last game I might work on David Balducci’s this week. Ya think I’m totally ambivalent? 38-20, UNC.
I’m not going to criticize Cignetti, it just wouldn’t do any good. We’re stuck.

    1. Joe, are you referring to the pre-season statements that they could make the playoffs? Or Narduzzi attacking the Big 10 as easy pickings? Maybe they still can win the NC since Narduzzi says they are undefeated! 🙂

  8. No matter how good Maye is, he is still a RS Freshman. He can be rattled. Look for Pitt to blitz him all day long and get a couple of interceptions. If so, Pitt can win this game 31 – 28 as I predicted previously.

  9. By the way, people are too quick to blame the OC, any OC, for mistakes or lack of offense. Players have to execute plays. We can criticize the play calling all day long, but if the WRs don’t have the speed to get open, or if the OL can’t sustain blocks, then the OC is really limited in what he can call. When offenses falter, the best solution is generally to simplify things and run a limited number of plays that the players can actually execute.

  11. There is no way Pitt wins this game.

We cashed in our our once-per-decade chip vs UNC last year.

Pitt will struggle to score sublet digits against one of the worst defenses in the ACC.

Our defense, once again forced to carry way to much of the load will tire midway through q4.

You’ve seen this one before folks…

  12. BigB, I think that thus far this year Maye has sort of caught teams by surprise. I’m not sure he was so highly thought of coming into the season. Now that the secret is out, I think that defenses will be scheming to shut him down, and teams like Pitt with good DLs and pass rushing capability will be coming after him. It will help if Pitt gets an early lead and forces UNC to come back.

On another note, do you really see us holding NC to 17 points?

That’s a stretch IMO. I think they pass all over our DBs for numerous and varied TD passes.

I do expect to see a dynamic passing game on display – but it will be the guys in the powder blue doing it…

Sorry, but Pitt has wrung all the optimism / hope out of me.

    My wild guess:
    UNC — 34
    Pitt — 24

    Go Pitt.

  18. Ike, will you join me in beating back this negativity? Pitt can still end up with 8 wins this year. Not bad for a down year after an ACC title. It’s all about lowering the expectations..

  19. Pitt comes up a tad short in a 42-10 beat down by UNC.

On an upbeat note, Pitt beat Wake Forest in straight sets down in Winston-Salem. Wake did give Pitt some serving problems. Pitt was able to pull away at the ends of the 1st and 3rd sets after most of those sets being very close. Pitt dominated in the 2nd set. Wake Forest has not won a set from Pitt since 2016.

Our freshman middle blocker Rachel Jepsen had a very good night. She hit 0.714 with 5 kills and 3 block assists. She also changed her number from #6 to #9. She was wearing #6 against Notre Dame two matches ago. Today I saw a #9 on the court for Pitt and it was Rachel. Nwokolo must have some sort of nagging injury. She did not play the last two sets, hence Rachel getting playing time.

  20. It is 35 degrees in Central PA as I gear up for my 8am tee time (possible frost delay).

I posted my prediction early Thursday morning – a Pitt loss for the record books as we match our worst beat-down in Pitt FB history 69-0

Our new punter has a first half punt blocked for a UNC TD. Pitt probably would be the only college team with two blocked punts from two different punters.

In an attempt to avoid a first half shutout, Duzz sends kicker Saul onto the field for a 60 yard FG that gets blocked and returned for a UNC TD.

Both of those follies add to my disgust and mistrust with the current team leadership.

Boy do I hope all of the above are wrong, especially the frost delay.

  21. As stated above NC defense is bad…
That being said if our D holds the Juggernaut NC O under 30 the Pitt Jaggeroff Offense can put up 38.
As Archie Bunker would say, “ipso fatso” we win 38-28.
    Book it Dan-O.

  22. I think Pitt will keep it close, but undisciplined play like hitting the NC QB a tad late will lead to flags to keep Heel drives alive. These refs will be looking for a reason to throw their flags to help NC get to Charlotte.

It will be another frustrating loss and one I’m happy I’ll miss being in San Antonio to see Elton John. It will be a new four-game season for me starting at home next week versus Syracuse.

Hopefully some entitled offensive linemen will start being benched and the coaches shift toward thinking about 2023 a little in terms of youngsters development.

  25. We share one common “recency” opponent (meaning they played the same team within two weeks of each other with similar roster). We beat VT 45-29 at home, and they beat VT 41-10 at VT. So that tells you…..nothing!

We will win this game. All of our games are winnable. All, are also losable.

NCAA just passed guidance allowing the head coach of all college teams to interact with NIL collectives. This is a huge mistake in my mind by the NCAA. Unfortunately for Pitt, this new rule will allow for outgoing, nice, relatable coaches to raise crap tons of monies for their athlete students. Definitely a competitive advantage against pitt moving forward.

  26. College football is a cesspool. It’s now just a legal one. Just pay all the football and basketball kids and just stop calling them student athletes. They are semi pro. Come up with a minimum salary per player and for fairness have a salary cap or revenue sharing. But make the cap high to please those high revenue schools.

  29. Pitt – UNC games have typically been tight affairs regardless of the records or relative performance levels entering the contest. Pitt will gash UNC’s run defense and keep their O on the sidelines just long enough for Slovis to connect on a couple deep shots that propel Pitt to a 37-34 upset victory.
