Pickett’s Roll to the Heisman

Here is a new post for comments – the other was so long…

Pitt’s Pickett Named First Team Midseason All-American by The Athletic

PITTSBURGH—Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett’s elite play this season has garnered national praise and accolades. His latest high-profile honor came this morning when The Athletic named him a first team Midseason All-American.

The recognition is richly deserved. Through six games, Pickett has completed nearly 70% of his passes (143 of 205) for 1,934 yards with 21 touchdowns and only one interception. With his three rushing scores, he has accounted for 24 total touchdowns in piloting college football’s third-highest scoring offense (48.3 points per game).

No FBS quarterback has arguably been more effective or impactful. Pickett owns top-10 national rankings in no fewer than nine NCAA statistical categories.

He ranks in the top five in passing efficiency (third, 181.8 rating), points responsible for per game (third, 24.0 avg.), total points responsible for (fourth, 144), passing touchdowns (fourth, 21) and total offense (fifth, 352.3 yards/game).

Pickett’s play has also earned Heisman Trophy buzz from many national observers. Former Heisman winning quarterback Robert Griffin III listed Pickett as one of four top candidates for the prestigious award.  CBS College Football analyst Aaron Taylor tabbed him in the top three. Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables this week compared Pickett to a recent Heisman winner and current NFL quarterback. “(Pickett’s) a lot like Joe Burrow,”

Venables said. “Experience, calmness, accuracy and can run, makes all the right decisions, having a heck of a year. He’s really good. He’s going to play in the NFL.”

In evaluating Pickett’s season, Pro Football Network’s Cam Mellor wrote, “He isn’t just the best quarterback in the ACC this season, he’s been the best QB in the entire country.”

In addition to his athletic excellence, Pickett has distinguished himself academically and in his efforts to give back. Pitt’s two-time team captain earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing and is presently enrolled in the Katz Graduate School of Business.

Pickett has been nationally lauded for his NIL initiatives, which have emphasized philanthropy as well as his teammates.

Pickett has led the Panthers to a 5-1 overall record and first place in the Coastal Division with a 2-0 ACC mark. Pitt, ranked No. 23 in both national polls, hosts Clemson (4-2, 3-1) this Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

The game will be nationally televised by ESPN.

  1. The Clemson game is definitely the biggest game of the season. This Clemson team is only a quarterback away from being dominating again. Pitt needs to keep the QB off balance, and to hope that he waits another week to find his game.

    1. I’m afraid every game from here on out will be the biggest game of the season.

“The Pitt Panthers — best entertainment value in the ‘Burgh!”

      Go Pitt.

  2. Almost every game is unknown to me due to the DBs left out on an island, plus I don’t trust most of them.

Clemson is certainly capable of hitting Pitt deep, even with a struggling offense.

  3. Clemson has 3 WR who run and jump like olympians…superb athletes. They will be the biggest challenge our D will face this week IMO.

Clemson will make or break Pitt’s season as well as Kenny’s ultimate fate.

  5. Pitt needs to put up at least 35 points. They could have last week with a closing field goal or TD but chose to run out the clock.

A good game and Pickett gets launched into the national spotlight more so than he is now.

  6. A loss this week doesn’t kill the season because the ACC stinks this year. It will deflate the fan base excitement once again. Win the damn home games!!!!!!!

  7. This Heisman talk is just about the last thing Pitt needs. Hopefully KP is mature enough to not let it affect his play.

I also think that if Pitt loses this game, they probably don’t win the Coastal. NRS says the ACC stinks, probably true, but any team left on the schedule could easily upset the Panthers, with Duke being the relatively sure win.

    1. Kenny is receiving guidance from his dad Ken and Whipple. All one has to do is listen to him on his show or interviews with the media. Mature, composed, selects his words carefully and focused. The Heisman is not his goal, its the draft and he’s not going to lose sight of that. Which doesn’t mean he can’t or won’t have a bad game. But he is on a mission to prove others wrong.

There are others on the team who will hopefully take a cue from his approach and do the same.

  8. As well as the boys are doing, I am too afraid of SOP to get my hopes up. I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop. Make a believer out if me guys!

I do hope they have stayed away from social media this week. I think Kenny is mature enough to ignore the distractions. If they want respect (and a nice bowl game someplace warm) they need to perform every game- especially in front of a national audience against a respected team. H2P!

  9. Clemson gave up 10 points to #1 ranked Georgia, 3 points to SC State, 8 points to GT, 27 points to NC State in overtime, 13 points to BC and 14 points to Syracuse. Asking Pitt to put up 35 points sounds like an almost impossible task.

    1. Not if the Clemson’s taller and superior athletes at WR either win the jump long ball passes or are interfered with on those plays. Their QB has the strongest arm(maybe not the most accurate) we have seen this season and if Dabo has him slinging mucho deep passes all game long I like Clemson’s chances for scoring on many of those plays. That’s my fear come Saturday.

  10. If I am Whipple I lock the gates, call Matt Canada over and work on the finer points of executing the “shovel pass” in preparation for the Tigers!!! It was a thing of beauty to watch from my seat in Memorial Stadium in 2016!!!

  11. From the Will Graves AP article today, “The defense has found a way to slow to a trickle the flood of big plays it allowed earlier this year.” That folks IMO is the key to this weeks game. Let’s hope Will is right on that account.

  12. Pitt could have added 3 more scores to either of the last games without ball control. I’m not worried about scoring on Clemson. This team knows how to score. I’m worried about big plays. We’re fast but not Clemson fast. Have to pressure the QB. If we pressure the QB, we win. If not, it’s probably a dog fight and last possession wins.

        1. Agreed. One of the keys to victory (apart from the obvious element of defending the deep pass in man coverage) is for the DE opposite Baldonado to get consistent pressure. That’s been somewhat lacking compared to last year, as has presence on the interior of the defensive line. Both will be needed against Clemson.

    1. Did you watch the SU, Clemson game? The Panthers can win this game, the Clemson oline is questionable and the QB is a bigger question mark. The Clemson defense is formidable but the Pitt offense is prolific, I like Pitt to win 27-13

    1. Not sure I agree. Expectations are always high at Clemson. They are the closest thin the ACC has to an SEC program.

The ones I’ve talked to still expect to go to Charlotte in December. If they win out, that can still happen, correct?

  14. Curb your enthusiasm! I was fortunate to be in Death Valley that fateful day when Pitt shocked Clemson. This time is much different from that encounter.

I remember sitting down in my seat and hoping Pitt would not embarrass themselves that day. I was very happy when we scored our first touchdown. I thought: “Well at least we are not going to be shutout.” As the game progressed, Clemson’s fans got nervous. It was very quiet after Blewitt’s field goal.

Dabo is really playing up the underdog role. That is his big motivator. All he needs to do is get his team to believe in themselves. Make no mistake about it, Clemson has the better athletes. Once they believe they are the better team, then Pitt is not going to stand a chance.

For this game my expectations are the following. Everyone down here in Clemson territory believes they will try to establish the run early and then try passing the ball.

I know exactly what is going to happen unfortunately. Clemson first play from scrimmage is going to be a play action pass on a go route. If that works, it is game over for Pitt. If it does not work, the next two plays will be other types of play action passes. Clemson is going to establish the pass to make the runs more effective. That is what I would do. Clemson has the studs at running back to start wearing down Pitt after the first and even the second series. They do not have to do it right out of the gate.

I wish I could share some of your enthusiasm but I fear we will all be sorely disappointed at the end of the day on Saturday.

    1. John, that’s exactly where I’m coming from. Our only chance is for Pickett to actually torch the Clemson defense. It’s possible but not probable. Unfortunately I can see Clemson beating Pitt by 2 touchdown or better.

Older experienced OL, Krull, Barthalomew, Izzy, Addison and Minor, etc. some didn’t play or played little last year. This is a different team

Both teams are in uncharted waters.

Pitt being the favorite in a must win game to keep it rolling toward respect.

Clemson with their backs up against the wall for the first time in recent memory.

A huge test for both teams, great offense vs. great defense.

Loads of adrenalin flowing, especially at the tailgate.

CBS Sports and Sporting News Name Pickett First Team Midseason All-American

PITTSBURGH—The national accolades continue to roll in for Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett.

The latest recognition comes from CBS Sports as well as Sporting News. The prominent national media outlets both named Pickett a first team Midseason All-American.

Earlier this week he was named a first team Midseason All-American by The Athletic.

CBS Sports has regularly praised the play of the Panthers’ fifth-year senior signal caller this season. CBS College Football analysts Aaron Taylor and Randy Cross tabbed Pickett as one of the country’s top three candidates for the Heisman Trophy.

Wrote Sporting News: “Who is the best quarterback in the FBS right now? SN chose Pitt’s Kenny Pickett, a super senior with huge numbers, ahead of Ole Miss’ Matt Corral and Coastal Carolina’s Grayson McCall.”

Pickett’s high national profile has been well earned. Through six games, he has completed nearly 70% of his passes (143 of 205) for 1,934 yards with 21 touchdowns and only one interception.

In a Wednesday morning tweet, Pro Football Focus listed Pickett as the highest-graded quarterback in college football with a 92.5 rating.

Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables this week compared Pickett to a recent Heisman winner and current NFL quarterback.

“(Pickett’s) a lot like Joe Burrow,” Venables said. “Experience, calmness, accuracy and can run, makes all the right decisions, having a heck of a year. He’s really good. He’s going to play in the NFL.”

  19. I have lots to think about this week, so I’ll start early:
    1) Pitt has so much to play for:
    a) Finally ranked
    b) In first place
    c) Chance to play at home in front of a sellout vs a traditional power
    d) Opportunity to create fan excitement, put SOP to rest for another week, continued national perception and exposure , and perhaps give huge boost for attendance at future games.
    2) Clemson has so much to play for:
    a) Another loss and we are basically done competing for ACC championship.
    b) Respect, we shouldn’t be an underdog as we have the second best d in the country, didn’t give up a offensive TD to the #1 team in the country, and lose an away game to a ranked team in ot.
    c) We crushed these guys the last 2 times we played, different players, same programs.
    d) We are better. Our talent is better, our coaches are better, our fans are better, our lives are better, our women are better, blah, blah, blah……. you get it, right?

I just can’t shake the feeling we’re gonna get boat raced. I can also see early long passes completed by them, rpo killing us, KP having an off day, and things just completely falling apart. 40 years of being scarred do this to you. I mean, close your eyes and tell me which scenario you see? Be honest.

    1. Clemson has tall, athletic WRs. I think a lot will depend on how close the officials call the game.

Pitt’s DBs are taught to play physical and very handsy. I’m expecting lots of PI calls against Pitt, especially Williams and Woods, which is going to make it tough going for the defense, IMHO.

      GO Pitt.

  20. BigB posted a link to an article above about KP. It’s from Brian Batko in early 2018. Worth a read.

Here’s a nugget on KP’s recruiting (he had committed to Temple as a Junior) that I didn’t remember…

“Pitt jumped into the mix with an offer as more Power Five schools showed interest, and for the competitor in Pickett, it was an easy choice to play at the highest possible level. He was dealt another curveball when Matt Canada, the Pitt offensive coordinator who recruited him, left for LSU. Pickett didn’t renege on his commitment, but he took a step back to reconsider, and North Carolina came at him hard up until signing day.

“It was two weeks of him not sleeping,” his father recalled.“

    Thanks, BigB.

    Go Pitt.

  21. Great opportunity for the home team this week. A potential bigger opportunity is around recruiting. Any mention of recruits attending this game? We may have an actual great gameday experience to offer a potential recruit. I don’t expect as many Clemson fans as we would normally see if their team was performing well so everything is setting up for some exciting things.

My main concern with this game is Dan! Hey brother, did you pick Pitt to win this game? Oh no, change your mind, quickly. LOL my friend. Just poking fun with you. Look, at the end of the day, we have all experienced 35 years of crud. We are all gently tipping our toes into some form of koolaid, with many of us forgetting what koolaid actually tastes like. For some, it tastes burnt, for others it might be sweet. At the end of the day there is an understanding what we all really understand as pointed out by Annie.

As far as the game, let’s hope they don’t force KP to move left in the pocket. Let’s hope there is no change of clempson quarterback, and let’s really hope he stays well below average in performance by missing wide open receivers all day. I don’t think we have seen or defended against an nfl qb this year so all the stars seem to be aligning! Been traveling each week for hockey. Minneapolis last week, Vegas this coming week and Boston next. Kids can be such a great expense! Reed, hope yours keeps fighting! Many thoughts and prayers sent his/your way! Peace.

It is good to be a part of the national discussion – now we play one game at a time and let the play on the field speak for the team. It is all about having fun and winning football games.

John in South Carolina puts things in perspective and portrays reality regarding this Clemson game.

The other reality is that right now Pitt has a seat at the table. How long can we remain relevant? The first next loss will take the bloom off the flower.

I’m driving to WPA this weekend, wanting to be a believer. I’m definitely a Pitt fan.

      Make me a believer!

  22. I have to say, I’d prefer it if this wasn’t even discussed. I do get the reasoning in that the more you talk about it, the more the seed gets planted. But, we don’t need to be talking about how great we are when we’ve only had two ACC games. One game at a time. Keep focused on Clemson and that’s it.

  23. There is a great thread on Panther Lair where one of the posters volunteered to give up to 4 sets of two tickets to Pitt fans who would like to go to the game but might not be able to afford it, throught life circumstance or parhaps an early grad struggling to make ends meet. Doesn’t want any $, just the promise of going to the game and not selling the ticket. His approach… order tixs through PItt and transfer them via the mobile app.

Its gained some traction with others offering up unused tix, etc.

Very heartwarming and POV-like to see this going on.

—Transfer Marcus Minor graded the highest along the OL against VT.

—Coach Duzz mentioned Olineman Matt Altsman, from CC (Lastrow!), as a valuable member of the scout team. Talked about how the scout team units have a tough and crucial job – needing to learn a different opponent’s offense and defense every week…

—Eliot Donald was mentioned as scout team defensive player of the week…

—CB Mathis, from Florida, said he came to Pitt because he liked the aggressive approach to playing cornerback. Said his biggest adjustment was the cold weather – said it never got cold at home in Florida…

  28. Why I am worried about the Clemson game! Here is a headline from a Clemson blog: “Clemson football: With nothing to lose, it’s time to open up the playbook” Dabo is probably feeling the same way. 29. I look at Clemson and see a team desperate for a win against a good team. I look at Pitt and see a team talking Heisman and thinking ahead to ACC title. What could go wrong?

    Liked by 3 people

    1. A good coach would not have lit the Heisman torch – Duzz has to carry that for the rest of this season. The ACC title should be the focus and I believe was a goal of this team before the season started.

The key is “TEAM”. These guys need to be focused on one game and that is the one in front of them. No distractions, just heads done, humble attitudes until that coin flip at 3:30pm on Saturday. At that point the offense must be laser focused on executing their assignments, protect the ball and play like they have all season so far. The D needs to punch Clemson in the mouth and when they knock them down, return to your position and do it again and again and again.

No let up this Saturday. Clemson is a good football team. Their QB, Mr. Dr. Pepper hasn’t shown up yet. Let’s keep him in his bottle and show the CFB nation that Pitt FB is relevant again.

It’s one game. The most important game of the season to date. Maybe the most important game in the last 35 years, to date. Fans can be won over on Saturday, new fans can be made this weekend and Duzz can earn his salary with a win over Clemson.

The slow trek to Heinz Field begins today for many of us. There will be much fun to be had along the way and friends to see and share laughs with. Pitt football needs to be entertaining on Saturday – give us all you got and leave nothing on the field of play.

      H2P!

  30. The most frightening thing about Clemson is that they held Georgia to 10 points, a team that no one else has held to less than 30. Pitt is going to have to play their best game on offense and defense to win this one.

    1. To make matters even scarier, it was Georgia’s defense that scored the TD.

Coach Whip and Coach Bates need to be outstanding in their calls because Clemson will have the better overall players – but we should have an edge at QB because of KP’s experience…

      Go Pitt.

  31. Easy erie, easy!! Pitt is not currently relevant. We carry 35 years of non-relevance, to be considered relevant in week 7. This is almost like saying SMU was relevant a few years ago when they made a run….in one year. I like your enthusiasm for sure, but for me, I temper my own because we just aren’t “relevant”. Relevant gets you somewhere after several years of high performance (see cincy). It took them years of consistent football to break through. Holding back Pitt his year, is the perception and reality that the ACC is awful. Being the best of an awful crop gets you some props, but doesn’t mean you are relevant.

I have visions of Pitt v. Utah back a few years. We thought we were relevant and poof, once we played a really good team, realized our relevance was self-appointed and not long lasting. Okay, it lasted for about three minutes.

Pitt needs to get to their qb, Ugly ugly ola, and keep him uncomfortable. Get him early and he is done. LEt him get any confidence and we might struggle. Hoping the clempson d doesn’t contain our qb and make him go left. He has struggled that way….as do most right handers.

Always good to be optimistic, and I have never picked against pitt in any prediction thread since inception, despite the odds. Find a way to win.

    1. Agreed – relevant is too strong – how about “recognized” nationally as being pretty good right now (in this moment in time).

By the way, I’m excited about the game and what lies ahead if Pitt wins, but I’m not buying that we are actually as good as the media hype. It all sounds great, but we know better as Pitt fans…

  32. I like PITT this Saturday, I truly do. But if you look at the talent levels of both teams the advantage CLEMSON has is almost laughable. According to 247, CLEMSON has 10-5 stars and 40-4 stars on their roster this year. PITT has 0-5 stars and 12-4 stars on their roster. The division of wealth here is staggering. But PITT has Kenny Pickett who almost single handedly swings the Las Vegas scales in the Panther’s favor. Wow, you talk about the power of one. His play highlights and underscores the absolute need for great
QB play to be very successful in this game.

Here’s my Eeyore take: Pitt screws up early and stakes Clemson to 10-14 points set up by defense or special teams. By the second quarter, we start outplaying them, and keep it up the rest of the game only to fall short, losing 23-24. Kind of like the Wayne Adams game. Heartbreaking. Worse than being blown out. That close!

Or, we kick the crap out of them. Either way, HTP!
