POV’s Zoom Roundtable #2 on 01/13/22

Ready for the Zoom Roundtable discussion #2 my friends? Good!
Right now we have three attendees listed: Fran, Gordon and Dan72.  We need a few more to get the back and forth going.  We all really enjoyed the POV Zoom Roundtable #1 a few weeks ago…

It looks like there are no Pitt BB games or other distractions on Thursday, Jan 13th. We’ll go from 8:00 to 9:00 or 9:30 or so. Is this good?? Remember you can log on or leave the meeting at any time.

* Who will be (or is?)  new OC? and what type of offense should we see? – and what we will most probably see?

* Is ex-USC QB Kedon Slovis the real deal? Will he take us to the promised land or are we looking at Max Browne/Ricky Town/Jeff George, jr. all over again?

*  Will Mathis leaving hurt the team? Who else has left that will impact next season?

*  Are we winning or losing the Portal Game?

* How well will Patti play at QB if he wins the starting job in ’22?

* Can Pitt get back to rushing strength like we saw in 2018 with Ollison (1213 yards & 11 TDs) and Hall (1144 yards and 10 TDs)?  Can our returning OL make that happen?

* Is the 2021 season’s level of play the same as we will see in future FB seasons or was this a totally Pickett-Driven success?

* Some 2022 pre-season Top 25 listings have us as high as #11? Do you believe that? Why?

* What does Capel have to do this season to save his Job…is it in real jeopardy?

* If Capel plays decent ACC ball can he recruit better for next season?

*Do you think an extension is due to Capel if he does well this year?

* Based on overall Pitt sports success is Heather Lyke a real success? Will she stay or will she go?

    Pitt #11

    USC transfer Kedon Slovis steps in for Heisman finalist Kenny Pickett. He’ll get to throw to Biletnikoff winner Jordan Addison, Jared Wayne and Akron transfer Konata Mumpfield, a Freshman All-American.

    The Panthers’ top three rushers and entire O- line are coming back, too. Eight defensive starters should return, led by All-ACC DT Calijah Kancey, DL Habakkuk Baldonado, LB SirVocea Dennis and S Brandon Hill.

  3. Pitt ends the year at #13 in the AP polls.

    It would seem the voters placed a differnt weight on the Peach Bowl results than a few folks here.

    A nice way to end the year and certainly higher than where most/any of us would have predicted last summer.

  7. Pitt Football Earns Lofty National Rankings in Final Polls

    PITTSBURGH—The Pitt football team has earned its highest final national rankings in nearly four decades.

    Under the direction of Coach Pat Narduzzi, the Panthers—who won their first Atlantic Coast Conference championship and finished 11-3 overall—placed No. 13 in both the final Associated Press Poll and USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll.

    It marks Pitt’s highest final national rankings since 1982, when the Panthers finished No. 9 in the AP poll and No. 10 in the United Press International (coaches) poll.

    Overall, Pitt finished nationally ranked this year for the first time since Dave Wannstedt’s 2009 Panthers placed No. 15 in both polls.

    In addition to its lofty final rankings and ACC title, Pitt’s 2021 team had many other milestone achievements, including:

    · The Panthers won 11 games for the first time since 1981. Only five Pitt teams have won at least 11 games (1976, 1979, 1980, 1981 and 2021).

    · Pitt went 5-0 on the road this season. The Panthers last compiled an undefeated road mark in 1987 (4-0).

    · Pitt earned a No. 12 ranking in the final College Football Playoff ratings, its highest ever.

    · Individually, three Pitt players earned first-team All-America honors from NCAA-recognized selectors: wide receiver Jordan Addison (consensus), quarterback Kenny Pickett and long snapper Cal Adomitis. The Panthers last had three first team All-Americans in a season in 1982.

    · Addison is the Panthers’ 54th all-time consensus All-American, placing Pitt eighth among all Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools.

    · Addison won the 2021 Biletnikoff Award (nation’s outstanding receiver), Pickett won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award (nation’s top upperclassman quarterback) and Adomitis earned the Patrick Mannelly Award (nation’s top long snapper).

    · Pickett finished third in this year’s Heisman Trophy balloting, the highest finish by a Pitt player since wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald was the 2003 runner-up.

    With the return of 18 starters in 2022, Pitt is already garnering mention in early Top 25 listings, including The Athletic (No. 11), Athlon (No. 19), Pro Football Network (No. 19), Sporting News (No. 24) and Yahoo Sports (No. 24).

    Pitt ticket information for the 2022 season is now available online or by calling (800) 643-7488. The Panthers host seven home games this fall, including attractive non-conference matchups against historic “Backyard Brawl” rival West Virginia and Southeastern Conference foe Tennessee in the second edition of the Johnny Majors Classic. ACC opponents visiting Heinz Field in 2022 are Duke, Georgia Tech, Syracuse and Virginia Tech.

  11. WVU OC pay…

    Harrell will make $600,000 the first year signed with West Virginia University. The university then will increase Harrell’s pay to $800,000 and $850,000 by his third year.

    They are in the Pitt budget range. Tough going against the Alabama’s of the world.

  12. Adomitis – now he’s got a potential great gig in front of him.

    Long snapper in the NFL. Rather low chance of injury compared to other positions.
    (I think there are rules protecting the long snapper). Makes a squad and could potentially do that for 10 years.
    He could grow all of his hair back in that time and have a nice nest egg for his real job after football.

    Good for him!

  13. Here is some potential fodder for your roundtable tonight. Used to be a routine item of discussion on the POV for our horrendously low ranking:

    “ Pitt finished 10th in the LEARFIELD Director’s Cup standings, earning 83 points for a third-place finish in women’s volleyball, 73 points for a fifth-place finish in men’s soccer, 63 points for a 13th place finish in FBS football and 29 points for a 32nd place finish in men’s cross country.”
