ACC Championship Prediction Thread

Lets get the bad taste of basketball out of our mouths. Today is a day for savoring the season and anticipating the biggest football game of the last forty years. Two great offenses. A defense that has struggled against the RPO. A team that is on the cusp of achieving everything they’ve wanted. Who wants it more?

I will all come down to who plays a more complete game. Lets hope that Pitt plays their best one of the year.

  1. Everyone seems to be predicting a Pitt win – Panther-lair, POV, Las Vegas. I’m getting nervous. Going to work in the yard to distract myself.

  11. Pitt MUST win. Period. Will be there from PA with my daughter who lives in Charlotte (Pitt grad)—on her dime, no less. Pitt MUST win. Period.
    Pitt 52 Wake 41. (Wake’s last TD in garbage time with no starters for Pitt even on the field……..which makes some worry about how bad next year will be😱)

  13. Pitt 45 Wake 34 POV’ers complaining justifiably about STUPID ACC refs favoring the below-the-Mason-Dixon line team.

    Thank G-d we don’t have to be tortured by the totally one-sided ACC broadcast teams…..I was in radio advertising for 38 years and have been associated coast-to-coast with many stations that had fantastic
    highly professional sportscasters…..the ACC is about as bad as you can get I mean BAD!!!!

  16. Since I was up two hours last night upset over the BBall loss, I’d like to give a final thought.

    Major Major, John made an excellent point in a post today. He said, that of course the coaches know better and that Pitt inexperience just cost them the game. And he’s correct, a good 8th grade rec coach knows to call time out and set a play in that inbound play. But, here’s the thing…….

    That’s one of the reasons he was fired at OK State! He was constantly out-coached in critical situations on the floor. Also, when he was told
    he would be let go at the end of the season, he had zero recruits lined up for the following year.

    Capel’s job isn’t to just “know” how to handle situational basketball, it’s to execute it on the floor. He and his coaching staff cost Pitt that game!

    1. Another key point is Cap gets paid $3+ million a year to make sure his team is prepared to win the game when they have a 4 point lead with 10 seconds left to play. Sure he knows what the strategy should be and how his team should go about executing. The big difference is we all know a timeout should be called to remind his struggling team who just the other night lost a similar one point game – we get paid nothing for that knowledge, Cap gets millions.

      His recruiting is really bad, really, really bad.

    I agree with the initial comment on this thread. Everyone is picking Pitt .. and it bothers the heck out of me

    Even the local media cynics; even Packer. Durham and McLain, despite the fact the Wake AD was on their set just a short time earlier.

    Pitt is only a THREE point favorite— that’s it! A field goal — and Wake has the better FG kicker

    I’ve seen way too many times when all is picking one team, and the other team triumphs … whether it’s a sense of false security for one team or extra motivation for the other

    Pitt Staff for the anxious joy I feel today over tonight’s game. Is been since 1981 since I’ve felt this way and I wasn’t sure this ever would happen again.

  24. I would be surprised if it is a shootout. Too big of a game. I’m expecting 24-21. I see both teams playing conservatively. Punting often for field position. Safe throws or tuck and run. No idea who will win since they are so evenly matched. Cop out, I know. I hope Pitt wins and I hope the outcome is not determined by a key injury or questionable call. Can’t wait!

  31. Reporting LIVE from Charlotte…. Pitt fans have taken over this town. Great event last night organized by Jeff Ferruzza of Pitt Panthers Fanatics. Attended FanFest today where Pitt fans outnumbered Wake fans by 20-1. And you know that the spirit is alive when you see “I hate Penn State” and “13-9” shirts. This however was the best of the day…

  34. IKE, you say there may be more than just KP leaving this year. Obviously, Taysir, Shockey and Krull are all seniors. So, you might be talking about a transfer…probably a RB. I really hope that is not the case as Izzy and Rodney are a formidable pair to have moving forward.

  35. Baylor beat OK State with defense and turnovers. Great game that came down to 1st and goal at the 2 with OKST needing a TD to win. On 4th and inches, Baylor stopped the pokes RB at the 1 inch line.

  36. Been lurking on the sidelines for a long while…this one has brought me out.

    I now work weekends 7A to 7P – so have not seen many games the last few years … we did go to the Thursday Night Pitt- UNC game this year (50 Yard line East Club seats row A – Wife loved it!) so that is pretty much what I have for a scouting report.

    Kenny has truly grown into his shoes. The defense has improved a bit – still lack of coverage skills kills me – , but it was the balanced offense I saw that night (at least the 1st half) that impressed me. Running backs are capable. The O line is awesome.

    If that Pitt offense shows up it will be a blowout. However…I was not impressed at all with special teams – so if it comes down to their play Pitt maybe wins a squeaker.

    I’m going with the small blowout however, Pitt 31 WF 20 – WF scores a TD in garbage time to make it seem close.

    (And yes – I am a masochist – we still have BBall season tickets – Section 123 – can’t make any of the Saturday ACC games so if anyone is interested in 2 seats let me know. Gratis for POV’ers. The team stinks, but I have seen a lot of improvement since Game 1… too bad the one kid would rather hit cops then 3 pointers or the team – the team could be a lot better. BTW – the food in the Pete is terrible this year – every pretzel has been undercooked cold or stale, hot dogs and perogies were undercooked …is there still a Fan Experience Committee?)

  40. Interesting how our men’s soccer and women’s volleyball teams play schools that are two of Pitt’s most “hated” rivalries – notre dame and penn state. Yet our football team plays squeaky clean W_F who most fans say MEH.

    I’m hoping the players and coaches come ready to smash mouths and step on necks. Get your boots on and stomp some deacons. Win # 11 is huge and the ACC championship has NEVER been won by a Pitt FB team EVER.

I have a personal bone to pick with Wake – was an undergrad and went to my very first UNC BBall game in Carmicheal Auditorium in 1977 on my birthday, got courtside bleacher seats in the student section…and Wake upset the Heels by one on a buzzer beater from Rod Griffin – he was about 20 feet right in front of me. This was the Phil Ford led National Runner-up team that year, lost to Marquette in the F4…

      I’ve hated Wake with a passion ever since. So there is some fire in me tonight.

  49. Skip, I like your prediction, although I begrudge the opponent’s 3 points. I love a good blowout. Why oh why does Pitt make us pay for every win. My mirror neurons kick in and by halftime I’m ready for an IV and ice bath.

    I predict… and ANYONE who has been on POV or Pitt Blather knows I tend to have a pretty decent batting average when it comes to predicting BIG Games…

    Pitt does WIN. And why shouldn’t they. Clearly the BETTER team.

  59. Nice to hear that Pitt fans have taken over Charlotte and outnumber Wake fans. But remember that Wake students and a lot of their fans could leave home at 3 in the afternoon and still get parked in time for some tailgating.

    I’m happy as I have been since 76 that Pitt is where they are right now. I won’t jinx us all with a prediction.
