Back to being offensively challenged. Zone sucks, ball movement stinks, and nobody’s moving. Other than that we are fine.

The Pitt BB team looks lyke a wreak tonight.
The # 336 ranked BC three point shooters are believing they can beat Pitt.

The offense is totally stagnant. They just look horrible so far tonight. Needless fouls, poor ball movement, giving up way too many 3s. This is starting to look like more than just a slow start.

Well… to be down 5 after that garbage play and hot BC shooting is a win. Need to get it together in second half. X and trey playing as bad as we have seen all year.

Bonehead play costs Pitt a 5 pt turnaround. My coaches rules #7. Never go up in the air with the ball unless you have a wide open receiver and a purpose. Horrible turnover cuts our lead to 7

thats basic ball handling and no talking. he needs to expect the double team and his teammates need to let him know. 7th grade Dan? Need to learn to win!

You need to talk to each other…call the double teams. Typical of young basketball teams, when they get in trouble they panic and stop moving their feet. On both turnovers not one person was moving to the ball. I’ve run that inbound play 100 x. Someone needs to break long. If the inbounded gets in trouble he can fire it long. Even if you turn it over, you give them the ball in the back court and have time to set up a defense.

I went to a high school game last night, Dan. The fundamentals were WAY BETTER than what I saw tonight.

Same. Went to a high school game on Tuesday night and while there were no D1, or even D2 or whatever is below that, players on the court, the fundamentals were far better. Always moving. If a guard penetrated and the D collapsed on him, immediately looked for the kick out. Ball came into the post one way and the “big” man would look opposite for a cutting player or somebody open on the perimeter. The lack of fundamentals is really frustrating. But I’ll take a W.

No seniors (and 1 junior) on this team and no 5 star(and one 4 star) players and Pitt doesn’t get many breaks from the refs. So this is what you get. I’ll take the W and the 4-4 record in the ACC that goes with it. Pitt is now 13-6.

Back to FB, Safety Garner enters the transfer portal. That leaves Pitt with only 5 safeties on their roster which includes one freshman who just enrolled and another RS freshman. Hamlin and Ford better stay healthy and not be called for any head shots this coming season.

That was a very interesting game, it started with neither team being able to do anything, then Pitt stayed cold as ice with nothing dropping and BC got red hot from three land. Pitt wasn’t getting turnovers, foul shots or any easy baskets. Right before the half Champ took over and got us within 5.
I noticed before the game that for the first time in recent memory, we were the bigger team. Champ figured out we could make baskets inside, so in the second half he and Toney worked and Hamilton and Brown contributed, although rebounding was still spotty. Trey and X made some outrageous drives and Pitt took the lead. Pitt tried to give the game away at the end, but Murphy who had made some shots earlier saved the day with a buzzer beater after some good passes.
The team is getting something out of everyone, although I don’t think Drumgoole played and Coulibaly still looks a little lost out there, he played a few minutes with Hamilton and Brown in minor foul trouble.
Still too many mistakes, but when they get going it is something to see.
Shame on Pitt Fans last night, a late game, that was important to this team was very poorly attended, even by the Zoo. I guess Pitt has some serious students who have to get their beauty sleep.
BC had a very depressing flight home.

A few more things, Toney has been a real asset since coming back from injury, Champ is by far and away our best rebounder, has exceptional skills in that department as well as skills around the basket, should be on the ACC list for freshman of the year. Brown is a great shock blocker but is still under-performing in most other categories, especially rebounding, giving him few chances for second chance baskets. Hamilton is a fighter and also a great add to this team, too bad he is only here for a year.

Real sorry to see Garner go, understanding that he wants to be a starter somewhere. He started six games in 2017 and was real strong depth last year. The Portal cuts both ways. A Central Catholic guy.

Garner was the player that intercepted the YSU QB’s pass in overtime in his first game. I thought he had a bright future at PITT at the time.

BTW PittExpos, Murphy is called “Skippy out of affection and not so much meant as derogatory. He’s actually “Skippy #4. PITT was going after a sharpshooter and missed out on their first three choices when Murphy became available. Now some don’t really like the guy so they may be being sarcastic? I’m not surprised at what he has done recently, I knew he belong in the ACC.

Pitt might be on track for a surprise NCAA bid. Assuming of course they keep progressing and win 2 games in the ACC tourney. Their resume consists of some very good wins against ranked teams and some bad losses but its been a ‘down’ year in basketball across most conferences. I’d wager to bet that Pitt is one of the last 4 in. I wish football got me this excited.

I see you have drinking some KoolAid today Tx. I don’t think there is a snowballs chance in hell of Pitt getting selected to the NCAA tournament this year. Maybe next year if Hugley performs well in his freshman year and Pitt can actually find a point guard to run the show.

PITT football and basketball always leaves you shaking your head at the end of the season with the “What If’s) What is they would have won this, what if they had won that game? Recently it’s what if PITT would have beaten Wake and what if they would have held onto the lead against Louisville.

Only 7000 at the Pete so nearly 4000 empties or Pete at sub 70% capacity. Knowing it will be like this for the near future until Pitt gets ranked and starts going back to the tourney, why not give out free tickets to any high school senior who applied to Pitt and got accepted. This could influence their acceptance. A kid with multiple offers could be swayed by this act of generosity. Rich are you listening?

I think having no big man on the O side,no seniors, starting one junior and (1) 4-star speaks volumes…good to see the X-man improve in the assist category…that should improve the teams chances of winning-means he’s looking for the open shooter….learning not to be a “ball hog” is a good thing..if this trend continues I expect more good things to happen for these young Panthers.

Love to see the Panther BBallers win but I must admit that every time I see this team play I’m convinced they won’t win another game this season…
Happy to be wrong on that count…
I do think they take a leap forward when they get a big who can rebound and be trusted with handling the ball…
Go Pitt.

I used to love his dad, what a classic Center he was, talk about an “inside presence”! Too bad we couldn’t have gotten his son. USC hasn’t had much success in basketball in a long time, but maybe the Mobleys live out that way?

Just watched the replay of last nights game. Watched last night but missed the first few minutes & fell asleep before the end.
The announcers sounded familiar & they were who I thought they were.
Tim Brando doing the game. Always liked him doing either football or basketball.
The color man was Dan Bonner. He went to Avonworth. Can’t remember which of my two brothers went to school with him.

Capel needs to hire someone on his staff who knows how to teach zone defense. They are slow to react and seem to get mesmerized following the ball and not knowing where the opposition is in the zone that they are responsible for. It also helps to have the length underneath to intimidate and dissuade teams from driving into the heart of the zone.
Unless and until the next recruiting class with its 3 bigs can show what it can do, Pitt will have a hard time playing zone.
I am alternately thrilled and disappointed with ‘Penny. When he is “on” he gives this team a chance to win, but like most freshman he can also disappear or have the kind of game that makes you scratch your head.
Offensively a very good game, but defensively you can’t let BC or anyone score as easily as they allowed.
LikeLike
It has been suggested that the lack of an inside presence defensively has led to guards over-helping or caving into the paint when the ball goes to the post, leaving 3 point shooters wide open. I’m not sure how true this is, but I’d be curious about others’ opinions. I’d certainly rather take my chances with giving up a 2 inside rather than leaving shooters open for 3s.
