  1. Pitt missed 21 of 28 3-point attempts in their last game against FSU. The bookies don’t expect to see that happen again today. Also, Pitt didn’t play defense well in the last game. It was only a 7 point loss, it wasn’t like the WVU or Michigan blowouts. I expect to see Pitt beat the spread today…

  2. Pitt a 4.5 fave. Expect FSU to put their big men on our shooters today again. Pitt has to move the ball quickly.

  3. Pitt pretty sloppy with the ball….Cummings taking too many 3’s. he’s 1 for 5
and somebody needs to guard squirrelly Warley.

    1. certainly could be more but Burton needs to continue to grind and do what he’s been, he’s missed a few decent shots

and of course need to clean up the sloppy turnovers

oh yeah, can someone break one of Worley’s hands? shooting preferred 🙂

  4. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I think you can subscribe to ESPN+ and stream all of the ESPN channels, the ACC network, and ACC Extra for $10 per month, $100 per year. Then either a smart TV or get a Chromecast, Fire Stick, Roku or other device to cast the feed to your not so smart TV. You will be able to watch Pitt baseball, softball, volleyball, wrestling, soccer, basketball, football, etc. I recently watched Pitt women’s gymnastics vs West Virginia with my 8 year old granddaughter. Probably access to more than you would ever want.

Florida State gaining more and more confidence that their coach made the right game plan for today.

    1. They are also a poor team in the grand scheme of this season.

HC Capel needs to find a way out of this game. Cannot afford two losses to the same bad team.

  8. Pitt doing a bad job of blocking out under the FL State basket.

Missing bunnies on offense too, but the height of the Seminoles has something to do with that.

  16. A funny/strange note to the game….when Pitt was only up by 2 points and appeared teetering and before they brought Sibande back in…..i was gonna post this was similar to the first Pitt/FSU game where Sibande did little, only scored 4 points on 1 of 6 shooting.
Almost on cue, Sibande came in and LIT IT UP. Nike came in at the 7 minute mark Pitt up 58-56, immediately made two 3 pointers within 50 seconds. He totaled 10 points in 3 minutes.

  21. The biggest victory for the Pitt BB team this season IMO came from our hated rival WVC when they pulled their commitment from Federiko. The second biggest victory for the Pitt BB team this season IMO might just be the injury and problems from Hugely that sidelined him for the season. Anyone think our record would be the same if Hugely started at the center position all season long?

  22. H2P. Huge “not a loss” game for the NCAA resume. They have a real shot at the top 25 this week. Knocking on the door this past poll. Next week, someone may answer the door. Straighten out that tie, Jeff.

Yet, there are still some people who can’t enjoy it … All I have to say is that Capel is good right now … that’s all that matters.

  25. The logjam at the top of the ACC standings brings back memories of The Big East. On any given night it could be Pitt, UConn, Georgetown, Villanova or Syracuse taking center stage. Tough physical games with excellent coaches, packed arenas, and in my opinion the best college basketball played in the U.S. It is time for the fans to come back to The Pete. We have a team that could be very good by the end of the year…and a major factor next year (Top 10). This year is not over and there are potholes that could suddenly spring up, but I admit that I did not see us playing anywhere near the level we have reached…H2P!

      1. They are good, but not an Elite 8 team. If they manage to make it to the Sweet 16 it would be sensational. I am talking about returning Pitt back to the glory days and being ranked 22 would have been an insult. Pitt has some terrific pieces returning next year, some strong recruits entering the program and hopefully, the team will develop into (my favorite word )a juggernaut.

  28. Never the less Pitt controls its own destiny in ACC BB. All they have to do is win all their remaining ACC games to claim the 1st place title. Since Pitt beat Virginia Pitt would win the tie breaker for the title. However easier said than done with the Pitt last game at Miami being probably their biggest obstacles.

  29. I stand corrected. If Pitt and Va. go undefeated the rest of the way in the ACC they would both be tied for first place and both would be given a co Champion Trophy. Pitt would get the #1 seed for the ACC tourney by virtue of their win over Va.

  32. The beauty of this ream is when someone goes cold someone else picks them up and that spirit is behind their ability to close down games.

With the right players Capel can mold a team. He had too many individualists that played in competition with each other rather than in support of each other. Maturity helps and recruiting those who appreciate and will play for the team and want to win has been the formula.

  33. Reading the blog would be so much more interesting if the actual score was posted after each comment. From the ESPN game tracker Pitt took the lead at 12:15 in the second half and the closest FSU got was within one point at the 5:22 mark. From there Pitt seemed to open up the lead and hold it the rest of the way.

From the comments it is hard to tell Pitt was winning most of the game.

    1. JohnInSoCar,

You have to be patient with us – we have Pitt Losing Basketball Syndrome. This PLBS is caused by years of being subjected to bad Pitt basketball. One of the lingering symptoms of PLBS is an inability to see past the mistakes in a Pitt basketball game even when they are far outnumbered by the positives in the same game. So even though we were probably winning for 38.5 of the 40 minutes of game time, most of that time by more than one score, and put up 83 points, our PLBS does not let us enjoy the ride. Speaking for myself, my PLBS is rapidly improving and I believe this Pitt basketball team is leading me to a full recovery…H2P!

      1. I completely understand. I believe I am suffering from a very bad case of PLBS as I am very leery of watching Pitt basketball games and getting very frustrated. I may allow myself to slowly improve my condition by watching the replay of this past game.

For a long time, many of us had a very similar disease, PLFS. Pitt football has been pretty horrible from time to time as well.

    1. Can you imagine trying to call a game? How do they even get people to be referees? With the action being so fast, it seems like such a tough job…

I stopped worrying about refereeing a long time ago when I realized missed or wrong calls come with the game and are to be expected. Foul calls remind me of a “random-number-generator” — only fouls come from a secret “random-foul-generator” which is implanted in every referee’s brain…

      Go Pitt.

      1. while I appreciate that MM, sports is such big business in addition to entertainment and when done incorrectly at this highest level, it sucks and harms the entertainment part immensely

I don’t mind applying your concept to most early or mid game scenarios but when they happen to undoubtedly decide a game outcome, they’ve got to do better

on top of that video replay allows you to get very close to 100% right, there’s really no excuse I can tolerate for errors which happen often even when it is used(as I realize not every call is reviewable)

Questions on why may have entered here as the refs met to discuss and overturn the foul whistle. We are actually alone in first place as we beat VA. Will we be ranked? Depends on the media and coaches and their favorites.

  38. The ACC is the Rodney Dangerfied of college basketball…no respect. Pitt not ranked and most of the Conference overlooked…part of the reason is that to high degree there is parity and the schools are knocking each other off.on any given night. The biggest FAIL is Duke….It has been many, many years since Duke is not in the picture. ESPN is basically saying that the ACC is similar to the A!0. Bottom line—we have to win 4 out of next 5 games and at least get to the semi-finals of the ACC Tourney (a win would be a plus). Pitt would then probably get a 7 or 8 seed and 4 or 5 other ACC teams might get invites to the “Big Dance”.

I firmly believe that barring injuries we can do well in the NCAA’s stay tuned.

  39. Season summary to date from Chris Peak’s 1-2-3 column.

“The odds have been stacked against this team almost every step of the way.

Pitt was coming off an 11-win season and they needed a complete roster overhaul in the offseason. The roster that was assembled was picked to finish 14th in the ACC in the preseason. Star recruit, Dior Johnson, was suspended before the season even started. The returning leading scorer, John Hugley, has only played in eight games this year.

Not to mention, Pitt started the year 1-3 with two blowout losses to West Virginia and Michigan…and yet, Pitt is still right at the top of the conference standings in February.”

    Pitt’s BPI is # 55.

    https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/bpi

Read the lead in before the ranking. BPI is nothing but a “predictor of performance going forward”. Ignore ESPN this pseudo ranking.

  42. Pitt is a top 25 team. Pitt has not had a top 25 season. Both can be true. That 1-3 start plus the FSU game happened. Can’t erase them. The poll reflects the season not what the reality is at the moment. Yes, there are some biases. Pitt just has to to keep doing what they’re doing and the rest will take care of itself.

Now, the polls are one thing … the other thing is the selection committee actually does take into account the present and the journey and that is why Pitt is being given a respectable 8 seed in a lot of bracketology scenarios … and will likely only improve in the seeding.

Don’t stress the polls too much.
