  1. And the coach is still employed….. How Lyke is not being held accountable for an extension after a losing season is beyond me and for the hire itself.

They play relentlessly hard and are very court savy!

  3. Here is The Athletic magazine’s Top 25 CFB head coaches going into the 2022 season. There are two separate lists:

    Here is Stewart Mandel’s:

    https://theathletic.com/3165768/2022/03/08/stewart-mandel-ranks-the-top-25-college-football-head-coaches/?source=user_shared_article.

    Here is Bruce Feldman’s:

Narduzzi made the “just missed the cut” on Feldman’s.

Just think what that 12th win would have done for King Pat. # 25 at least!!

    Maybe they couldn’t spell Narduzzi?

BTW – It is quite a good CFB info publication

    1. Nearly any coach with a fifth year senior and three ? years under the same playbook and system, a near 24 year old man playing against 19-20 year old kids and the best QB since Marino would win ten games hands down.

Couple that with an easy schedule and a down year for clemson and you get 11 wins.

Let’s see what King Pat does with yet another washed up and overrated five star QB after his Heisman worthy QB leaves along with his QB whisperer. And a much tougher schedule with every ACC team with Pitt as a target.

Pitt’s $6 million dollar coach will go down in the annals of history as one of the most overpaid coaches and one that is a buffoon and arrogant jerk to boot.

    2. I have complained all season consistently about 3 things: Capel’s refusal to utilize timeouts, Femi Odukale’s lack of power 5 skills and refusal to value possession of the basketball, and the non existent offensive game (and lack of basketball IQ) of Will Jeffress. My wife is sick of hearing my same complaints over and over again.

Think about past history with head coach hires. Pitt leaves the search to some lawyer. Pitt leaves it up to a search firm. Pitt owes a favor to a godfather. Pitt does no due diligence. Pitt goes with the safe pick. Pitt goes with the cheap pick. Pitt goes with who the players want. Pitt goes with who will uphold the mission statement.

What a crock of hillbilly beans.

    Pitt has no new recruits.

Pitt will experience a mass exodus of players.

No elite transfers will walk into this mess and no amount of money will do the trick.

The Pete will be empty next season.

    And Pitt will lose money.

But the BOT will take no action.

Thank God this abortion of a team is finished!

Zero commits? Find me another school in the power 5 in the same state of affairs. May be wrong but doubt it exists. Capel may be a good guy, a family man, but he is failing miserably as the head coach of the MBB team.

  20. Made a late comment on the ND thread. Frustrated about the el foldo again at the end of the season. It isn’t Feltons fault that he is the coach!

You all know my thoughts on the AD as I was the first to call her out when she was brought to pitt. Very nice person. Not sure why anyone believed she would be an average to above average administrator based on her resume’.

Yes, we had a very very good football output last year, but need to understand time, place and circumstance. Covid is the main reason we won. The qb should not have been here. This won’t happen again. The great news for Pitt football is that the majority of the coastal, has new head coaches this year.

As far as mens bball is concerned, why did Capel get an extension again? Noone ever explained the rationale behind that. Originally, why did she let Hurley out her as a poor negotiator and closer? Hurley has done well. Hard to compare however because it is not an apples to apples comparison. I wish Hurley was in the ACC so we could compare hires. Felton was a good third option at the time, but the extension? Seriously?

Womens bball – Another very poor output, for years. How long should this be allowed to go on before someone looks at the AD as the big part of the problem.

  21. Most likely, Heather has some requirements in store for Capel as a condition for returning. They will have their post season meeting and the terms will be laid out. For the next 6 weeks, there better be nonstop recruiting from the portal. And then some staff changes.

And there needs to be a real examination of the end-of-season collapses. Look at Gueyes play as an example of energy and commitment. Apparently, one year wasn’t enough for Capel and staff to ruin his attitude. This isn’t all about the players, who won games over UNC and some others.

Look at the foul shooting over the 3 game win streak, and then over the past 5 games. Completely different team. Capel’s coaching style may be the problem, and that might not be fixable..

  23. If you’re going to demand changes from a coach you should just fire him. What’s the point of making Capel change his staff? I’ve always hated that argument. I’m sure Capel would rather be fired and get paid his buyout than fire his brother. Lol. C’mon. If you hire someone to run a program, you let them run the program. Or fire them. Meddling is the worst thing you can do. It won’t make anything better and all you do is sweep the problem under the rug. I’d dare her to fire me before I made a change I didn’t want to make.

Of course she won’t do anything. Its a waste of time and just for show … see, look over here, I did something. Lol. That is all demanding changes is for. It placates some of the vocal fans. But, in reality, does nothing.

Fire him. Or don’t and fire him next year when you think he’s more affordable.

But even keeping him under the guise of his buyout is too expensive is a cop out. Just pay the money and get out. Pitt can afford it.

Bryant’s coach Grasso might be an interesting candidate.

  24. All good points, but with a lot of players returning (hopefully) staff changes could wake things up. The old message could be stale. Also, some good recruits could serve to push the starters.

    1. If Capel stays, there will be no staff changes. Reason is simple: no assistant coach would join a head coach who, next year, will be a dead man walking. Capel will be gone after next year, if not before.

Capel was hired after she contacted (at least) Hurley, Oats and Crean (who’s about to be fired at UGA) … and who knows who else

When Capel was selected, we praised the hire not so much that he was a great candidate, but instead because he was much better than we could have imagined after none of the better candidates wanted to assume an 0-18 ACC team … and start from scratch

She didn’t pull a Barnes who interviewed one candidate when I guarantee there were plenty of viable who would have gladly taken over van NCAA team with a handful of starters returning

Having said that, the extension with such a large buyout is on Heather

  26. Pitt football did not win because of covid and the extra year players received. Every other team in college football was in the same boat. That is really looking hard to find something to complain about. Is Pitt football going to be the next Ohio State? Heck no, not until Pitt can triple their football budget. Last year was a fantastic year for Pitt football, give credit where credit is due. PN, his staff, the players and yes, Heather. If HL would have fired PN before last year like many wished, Pitt would not have won the ACC. Period.
You can complain about HL and use Capel, but not Pitt football.

    1. Not sure you can predict what would or would not have happened if player or coach was or wasn’t playing. If you can, you should be in Vegas. Not EVERY other team was in the same boat as you state. The same NFL draft occurred and players came out on time, early and some stayed extra because they were allowed to because of covid. If you want to say that Pitt would have won 11 games without K8, go for it. I won’t believe it, but you can type it.

This qb class is deemed to be quite weak (not my analysis). Don’t shoot the messenger. Stars aligned when one of the best of the weak class took advantage of extra time. Good for him! I never said it was a bad thing. In fact, I mentioned Pitt had a very good season. We actually have a very good chance to win the coastal this year due to most every coastal team having a new head coach. I do not think we will fare as well with the OOC and will either give credit or take that away based on results. Let’s see how we do! I will continue to predict a victory every week and somehow try to justify it thru words. Always have. Always will.

Pitt bball teams speak for themselves. I liked the original Capel hire because of recruiting. He didn’t bring that recruiting with him. Talent wins over strategy most days. We had neither. Portal Potty might bring some wins but it is not a solution. The players have all the power now so I expect them to start working on college dream teams to pair themselves up with coaches. We lack tradition and gameday experience now and each year leans into a lost generation.

  27. Most, including myself, thought Capel was a good hire. At least good enough to do better than Stallings. That is a really low bar. The extension was premature, it was a gamble and Pitt lost the bet.

By the way, I am surprised Trey McGowans isn’t putting up better numbers at Nebraska. I thought he would become very good.

    1. Trey has played in 16 games for Nebraska so far this season…6.8 points/g, 4.0 rbs, 1.6 assists.

As several others have pointed out here, the GREATER opportunity LOST for Pitt…is not having the chance to get his brother on the roster.
      Freshman Bryce McGowens is 6’7″… in 30 games… team leading 17.2 points/g, 5.3 rbs, 1.4 assists.

  29. Unfortunately there is no easy answer for Pitt basketball. Unless Capel keeps Hugely and finds three guys capable of competing in the ACC, Pitt will stink next year. Any new coach coming in probably loses Hugely, it is too late to recruit so again Pitt stinks again. This is a long term problem with no quick fix.

Any new coach will start with zero players and a lost year and must recruit an entire team of freshmen and portal players.

Most of us thought Capel could recruit ACC capable players, he hasn’t done it. Heather has to find someone that can. It won’t be easy and there are no guarantees. This year, next year it doesn’t matter all that much, we aren’t going to have a good team for many years if ever.

I believe that was the issue for both 17 year olds, Tray and Xavier. First, Tray has a 30 point game early in his freshmen year. Then, all of a sudden, there is all this talk (and print) that X will jump to the NBA after his sophomore year. Of course, none of us Pitt fans bought into this … but they must have.

Face it. Neither should have been starting for an ACC team at 17. But even though both showed promise, neither lived up to expectations — especially theirs

Nothing original. Just obsessive blabberingnmore than anything. We get it … You don’t like Duzz … You don’t like Heather … You didn’t like Dixon … You didn’t like Chryst … You don’t like Heinz … You don’t like the Pete … You don’t like balanced budgets … You don’t like the BOT … You don’t like the Chancellor … You don’t like steep hills … You don’t like bridges … You don’t like the uniforms … You don’t like sharing practice facilities with the Steelers … You don’t like visiting Pitt.

I gave Narduzzi 4 years. I felt that was fair. Still not really a big fan but he came through. Took longer than it should have but he did it. He gets credit. He has to go do it again, though … but, I’ll let the team play a few games and give him the benefit of the doubt until I have a reason not to.

Pitt not getting in preseason national rankings for next year has zero to do with a bowl game … A bowl game that moved MSU up one spot and Pitt down one spot in the overall rankings. That bowl game? The game that would have moved Pitt from #12 to #11? That one?

It has everything to do with Pitt not having Kenny Pickett back. Pitt has 75% of its production returning so Duzz won’t have any excuses … but all the national media sees is Kenny Pickett is not there. That is all it is.

Pitt, unlike most seasons, could quickly get into the top 25 with a win or two. They won’t have to “earn” a top 25 birth as much as they’ve had to in the past … but … but … but, they have to win a few to keep that recency bias … otherwise, nationally, SOP will come back with a quickness …

After the game in his post-presser he seemed disconnected and threw his team under the bus by saying Pitt needs better players. Jeff Capel is currently the HC and CEO of Pitt men’s basketball – he is the reason Pitt does not have better players, but he doesn’t know that to be the case nor is he acknowledging that fact.

If Heather gives Capel one more year, it might actually be better overall for the long term prospects, and maybe Miller then steps in. However, if Capel gets to .500 and just maybe to a NIT bid, then he gets a couple more years. But his recruiting must improve with some high school players so that there is a foundation for the future. I believe he has one 2023 recruit so far. No transfers worth a hoot are coming to a sinking ship. Jeff and staff are not capable of fixing this and his post-game comments warrant being given a pink slip.

I cannot wrap my head around blowouts in an empty Pete, which will make seven seasons and counting.

Heather is in a tough spot. Her job will be in jeopardy if Capel is back and he has a worse season in year five than the guy she fired after year two. I suggested Capel before Hurley said no and was happy about the hire – saw how he operated up close at VCU and have contacts in their Atheltic dept. He’s a good guy.

But he’s not getting it done and I wouldn’t bet any of your next paychecks that he will.

Im of the view that if he had the managerial courage to make staff changes, we would have seen that already. And we haven’t. Its not fun to fire people, but nobody bats 1.000 in hiring – even UPitt (and I bet Mark would acknowledge as much).

Thought it was telling they played the Hokies close in the home and home series and got blown out in the second game. And then followed that up with a 3 game win steak and a limp to the end of the season.

A really bad and desperate look to talk about the talent on his roster. The kids who stayed when all the crap was going down.

Narduzzi is probably a plus right now, but some minor sports such as ladies BB not so much. If she punts on Capel then she must get the next coach right, or it will be a significant stain on her career.

    1. Heather did not hire Narduzzi, Pat was part of a team that hired Ms. Lyke.

The softball hire was and continues to not be good as the program has taken a nosedive since the MAC coach took over.

Baseball is a mixed bag with Bell who was never a HC. His team looked good in the 1st half of last season, but dropped like 10 of 12 to end the season. Last night they were down 3-0 after 5 innings to Point Park on Cost Field.

The gymnastics coach seems to be winning and women’s lacrosse is competitive in their 1st season.

Both Basketball coaches seem to be really bad. That is being nice 😊.

Wrestling with Gavin is sort of a mixed bag. The team has a losing record in the ACC and finished this regular season with an overall 8-6 record (1-4 in the ACC). Individual wrestlers, he had 2 runner-ups for national championships last season that are trying to get back to that title match again in a few weeks. Recruiting hasn’t been great.

Did I leave any HC’s out? The men’s soccer coach was hired by Barnes. I’m not sure on the women’s side, but if it was a HL hire, they have yet to make the NCAA tournament.

Regarding men’s BB, I believe with the right HC, you can turn Pitt BB around fairly quickly.

      H2P!

  46. So based on what you write Erie Express, Heather is not doing a good or maybe even average job at the 2nd most important function of her job hiring coaches.
    Gymnastics: Good
    Women’s lacrosse: Good
    Baseball: Trending down
    Softball: Bad
    Women’s basketball: Bad
    Men’s basketball: Horrible

Of this list, men’s basketball counts at least 3x as much as the others.

No wonder Michigan State took a look then said no thanks.

    1. Right you are!

Now, someone (I believe TT) pointed out that HL extended the Duzz contract and that in his (TT’s) opinion Heather is responsible for the results of Pat going forward.

  47. Capel came to Pitt with the greatest endorsement – Coach K. Coach K sang and continues to sing his praises. That single endorsement blinded or was “good enough” for those that brought him to Pitt.
