Well, it happened.
And now the speculation is rampant…because you know, Pat Narduzzi.
First. Lets just talk about the state of the MSU program.
The lawsuit is messy…
With all that being said, Dantonio is about as much of a legend as there can be at MSU:
The good news (unless you’re part of the 30% off Pitt fans that don’t currently believe in Narduzzi) is that there is a coach at a non Power 5 school who is a better candidate than Pat.
My quick take: Fickell makes 2.3 Million at Cincinnati and will likely never have a shot at the CFP. Michigan State would clearly be step up in both pay and potential. But… Fickell at Cinci has got a shot to win his division every single year. In the Big 10 East, he’s at best fourth fiddle behind OSU, Penn State and Michigan. Still, money talks, and on top of a big raise, if Fickell takes the MSU job and can parley that into a string of 9 and 10 win seasons he’d have his pick of any college football head coaching job in the nation. If he stays put in Cincinnati he may not have as many options, even if he turns them into the next UCF.
But… Duz’ successful run as Dantonio’s DC combined with the perception (from many) that Michigan State is a step up from Pitt, means that Pat is always going to be in the conversation. At least until he isn’t.
I’d like to stop here and quote the Pete Thamel article, re: Pat Narduzzi… (emphasis added)
There’s an argument that he’s got a better job in Pittsburgh, as the Panthers play in the worst division in major college football. Slaying UNC, Duke and Georgia Tech is a lot easier than Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State. Another potential stumbling block here is Narduzzi’s buyout, which is substantial but not untenable.
And yet the sky is falling…kind of
Note that “Souf Oakland Life is a joke Twitter account…
but cooler heads are trying to prevail:
Meanwhile it’s business as usual on the Southside:
… at least until it isn’t.
Should be an interesting week or two.
Hail to Pitt

Please Dear God, MSU take Mr Hapless …Narduzzi. First time he has a chance 4th and 1 to beat Michigan and kicks a FG you will know what a game day idiot he is. Any good HS Coach can duplicate his record at Pitt. I love Fickell….I am the 30%!

First off, what a great article Mike. Thank you for the time it took you to put that all together.
Secondly, From the first day Narduzzi came to PITT, all I’ve read is that Narduzzi should be fired if he loses or he will leave if he wins. This is were the rubber meets the road. IMO, this is good, so we can all put the speculation to bed. I bet he stays and sorry about this……… for a very long time.

I am recovering from the broken ribs I got laughing over one of the funniest statements I’ve ever heard on the POV. That is he wouldn’t leave because of the team he has coming back. Ouch, they hurt just writing that. You mean the team that no one has even sniffing the top 25. The team that early looks have 4th out of the mighty Coastal. Hey, look on the bright side, when the bar is set so low it’s easy to chest thump when you finish 3rd, hey, you beat expectations. I could use some of that good stuff you’re using to ease my pain. Funny stuff, if they offered he’d be gone so quick he’d make Toddy blush, but it ain’t happening, and I guess I’m OK with that.

We could do better and we could do worse than Coach Narduzzi. I like the way he has steadily improved the staff.
The additions of Coaches Whipple and Beatty were smart moves to attract more offensive talent. Though I’d still like to see more changes…
And recruiting appears to be on the upswing (though I don’t think it’s realistic to expect us to out-recruit the southern teams…).
I don’t see Coach Duzzer going to Mich State, which is also a tough place to recruit to. But he’d do great at one of the football factories, IMHO.

I don’t think MSU will come after Narduzzi but it would be pretty devastating if he left.
Change at this point would be terrible for the overall health of the program. Finding a good coach to do his job in front of empty yellow seats would be next to impossible. Most important, Pitt wouldn’t pay for a good coach and we’d be left with another career assistant who has to learn on the job. We all have just sat through that and don’t want to do that again.

Pat Narduzzi, Pittsburgh coach: Another no-brainer for Michigan State fans who remember Narduzzi as Dantonio’s defensive coordinator from 2007-14. While Narduzzi’s results have been mixed at Pittsburgh (36-29), knowing the culture and recruiting at Michigan State would be a huge plus. From 2011-14, Narduzzi’s Michigan State defense was the only FBS unit to finish in the top 10 in total defense and rushing defense. At Pittsburgh, his defenses have gone from 100th in total D to 15th last season.

well, if Duzz does leave (and I don’t believe he will), at least he leaves the program in a better place
— when he arrived, we were begging for 8 win seasons, and he achieved that 3 times despite undeniably tough OOC schedules. Now, we are begging for 10 wins seasons
— the cupboard is not bare. He acquired a pretty good OL and RBs but very little everything else, Now he leaves with a pretty well stocked everything else (although there are also some pretty decent RBs IMO).
Also, Narduzzi was hired at about $1.8M; the new coach will make nearly twice that amount … so credit the AD who finally raised the level of the program to that of most of its peers (but not all), something that hasn’t happened in decades.
But of course. in this era of the transfer portal, a new regime may once again require a total rebuild. Hopefully not, but there are no guarantees. This staff has no real ties to Pitt and many likely would not hesitate to follow the HC to MSU for more $$ … at least the better recruiters as well as DC Bates who has a big B1G bio.

I don’t see Narduzzi leaving the boss he helped hire. Expectations are also lower among the Pitt fan base. But he might leave for $5 million and to stay one step ahead of the sheriff. The boosters at Pitt demand more than just participation trophies and crappy bowls. Their influence has not completely waned.
You won’t see me shedding a tear if he decides to go. I do see Narduzzi using this opportunity to squeeze heather for more money. He’s paid fairly right now. It would be a mistake to overpay for a 9 win ceiling coach.

Heather just might be stupid enough to extend him and pay him more money. Money that Pitt doesn’t have. Then I’d be stuck with Narduzzi for another 6 years since it would be far more difficult to remove a coach making guaranteed $4-$5 million dollar years. That’s why I say boosters won’t go for it since they’d be on the hook for any buyout.
But if heather thinks her man can break through and start having ten win seasons, she’ll stroke that check. It would be a huge mistake. I’d cancel my trip in for the Domer game this year if this hell played out. I’d probably say F Pitt football forever.

For those who pay attention to these numbers – this Pitt class has the following Rivals ratings:
5.8 —— 3
5.7 —— 3
5.6 —— 7
5.5 —— 3
5.4 —— 1 (Juco TE)
5.3 —— 1 (Kicker)
The average is 5.6. One-third of the class is 5.7 or higher.
With the QB Yellen and the TE from Florida, looking pretty good to me. Only disappointment is that there are only 2 Olinemen, and no one who looks like they might switch to OL…
Go Pitt.

33% rated 5.7 and above is decent. But Pitt still trails Miami, NC and Ga Tech in recruiting. And typically, Va Tech is very strong and out recruits Pitt. My standard has always been 40% or more is a good class. The elite schools are at 80% plus. In Narduzzi’s 5 years, he has averaged 25%. So 2020, was a better recruiting year for him than his baseline but recruiting is all relative. NC and Ga Tech had very good 2020 classes.

Pitt’s location is pretty decent as well. Theres always around 8-10 four star recruits (per state) from states within 500 miles of Pittsburgh – OH, MD, VA, NJ, PA
Pitt just has to land one per state (10% hit rate) and they’d have five 4 stars each year. Thats more than enough to win the Coastal unless you have poor coaching
I only expect Miami to significantly out- recruit Pitt.

If I recall correctly, Narduzzi was adamant that Pitt was his destination job, not a stepping stone. I believe him until things happen otherwise. As you all know about the coaching racket, it’s what you do vs what you say. I do think the time would not be right for PN to leave PITT for MSU. It’s a scandal ridden place and is not really going to make much progress with OST, PSU, and Mich in the way. It’s also probably not much of an upgrade in pay. PITT always pays what it needs to pay and right now is flush with ACC network $$$. So if more is needed, Heather will step up. As was said above he’s finally starting to make progress on the recruiting and developing a good pipeline. At MSU, starting all over again.
if I’m wrong, which I have been before, this is a better place to attract a new coach then what i was when PN started here. I don’t think we’d have a hard time coming up with a capable replacement.

Hey Ike, the Duzz would leave the team pretty much as he found it, strong on one side of the ball. You can go through the list of coaches who left a better team for another situation,ie bucks. I, as well as most POVers expect a really good year, but absolutely none of the national guys do, and I can see their reasoning. The line is a mess(ya, I know, all the returners, with one exception they stink) , no proven tight end, backs who are so so, and a qb who will be a senior and is wildly inconsistent.
That said, I’d bet he stays. But heck, just look at past Pitt coaches who have left for a worse team, Johnny and Jackie. Heck, you can go thru a list and most guys left a better team to go elsewhere for money. They wouldn’t be getting rid of a coach if they were all that, although there are the retirements etc. Johnny certainly didn’t come to Pitt because they were a powerhouse, and he left a much better team. Same with Jackie.
Enjoy the walk with Skippy, jr. lol, joke Ike!

and Pitt is closer to states like OH, MD, NJ and VA. All states where football is still strong and there are plenty of good D-1 recruits. I dont know why anyone would concede the recruiting battle to a school in a talent rich state. If you run an exciting offense, you’ll get super regional if not national recruits. Offense wins games in college and gets you to the pros.

Satirical Conspiracy Theory: Narduzzi is having an affair with Penny Graham who as we all know hates living in Pittsburgh. Nard called Todd years ago to ask him about Pitt before he took the job, Penny answered, and despite her advice, the rest is history. She thinks East Lansing, Michigan with it’s abandoned Oldsmobile factories is a step up from the Steel City. She is going to persuade Pat to really try to get this MSU job and by God, he gets it.
Pitt then feels embarrassed and decides it needs to make a splash hire. The top two choices are Johnny Majors Part III and Mike Haywood. Haywood just got let go from coaching FCS Texas Southern to back to back 2 and 9 seasons…but Haywood is full of character and a known discipline guy. The ACC Network is co-owned with ESPN, putting games people want to watch on there is essential to 1) get people to demand the channel and 2) keep people with the channel tuning in. Using Notre Dame is by far their biggest card to play to accomplish both things and since they don’t get to use it in football I’m almost surprised every ND basketball game is not on the ACC network. we always seemed to be on the ACCNX digital feed. They better get their act together and realize all ACC schools are equal. That is one reason MD left.

That reason is way down the list past the fact that they were financially hemorrhaging and wanted the bigger B10 money to stay afloat.

I think it’s a good sign Narduzzi quickly dismissed this rumor. He is a good guy at heart and far more loyal than average. Today is a positive development unless you are a “realist” aka Narduzzi hater.

The “realists” are in the back seat looking out the back window. If nothing else, a feeler was offered to Narduzzi to gauge any interest. He said NO, not interested! Please for the love of gosh……… Look forward.

Looks like NoDoz is staying. So get ready for another trip to a forgettable bowl game (we should be use to is by now). Especially the guys who weren’t even born when we actually went to legit big-time bowl games.
Pitt is a good gig, for the money. The BoT doesn’t expect much, and nor do most the fans, since they’ve
been numbed for 30+ years. Win a Pizza Bowl, once every 5 years or so and you’re good to go.

Well, that was anti-climatic. We barely had time to get the thread started.
