The last 2 home games should remind you how schizo this young team is. Against Wake, a weaker opponent, they jump out to a 16 point lead only to be outplayed the rest of the game. Against Louisville, a highly ranked team, they fall behind 16-0 but fight back and lose in OT.
You would think that after beating UNC on its home court just 2 weeks ago, Pitt should be in charge today … hopefully the team doesn’t feel the same way.
and something to look forward to … from a tweet from Chet Mason and retweeted by Dokish:
6’9 John Hugley with a career high 15 assists. “ I wanted to get my teammates involved” he didn’t take 1 shot attempt the entire game. Came into the game Averaging 24 points 15 rebounds 4 assists and he was the facilitator the whole night.
Note that Hugley plays on a team with sophomores and freshman. One of them is named Elmore James … seriously!
I am so tired of watching Roy William’s and his big pity party. Most teams go through tough times. Quit whining. Your team is still better than Pitt was under Stallings…

One concern, I think PITT is in a little foul trouble? Good news is that C-Penny hasn’t contributed much so far. Hope he doesn’t pick up that 3rd foul right off the bat second half.
I wasn’t stuttering. If Capel can keep this team together for next year I think they could be NCAA tourney bound. Maybe a chance at the NIT this year. They should have beat Wake and Louisville. They are new and improving.
Getting 9 points and some blocks from Brown and 13 from Murphy was big. Hamilton had as many points as Champ & McGowens. Won’t win many games with those two cold shooting. Nine guys saw playing time. Even Murphy & X’Man had blocked shots.

And what do you guys call him, Skippy….. only other Panther in double figures with 13, 2 & 3.
Hail to Pitt ! Beat the Tarholes twice in hoops and in football. haha
Good win for Pitt today. They need Champ to be a more consistent shooter. And Toney doesn’t seem as effective as last year. But Brown gave them a better game.
As soon as Champagne Life made a 3…the refs quickly put him on the bench, with some bs foul. Even though having a huge lead thru most of the game, the refs called 20 fouls on Pitt to the Holes 16.
Getting past the buffoon announcers, who should try calling the game and updating the stats instead of just running their mouths (but I digress), it appeared on TV that Pitt played pretty well, especially in the first half. They apparently tried to slow things down and milk the lead in the second half which could have proved fatal against another team capable of grabbing the momentum.
The box score tells the tale of how badly they need Capel’s incoming class of Bigs. Out rebounded by 11 total and 10 offensive. This won’t win against teams that can shoot 35-40% from 3 range and 40-45% overall. However, its a nice home win, sweep of the Tar-holes, and good showing on ESPN.
X deserves credit when its due, he won the game for them and picked up a bad day for ‘Penny. Toney played well too, and Murphy continues is “on again – off again” performances.
Hope the football recruits at the game enjoyed the show.
What did I LOVE about that game? We were out rebounded by 9!, McGowens & Champ (both good players) had bad games shooting, and we still won by 14! And if that wasn’t enough, we beat Carolina handily twice in the same year; I know they’re having a down year right now, but they are still loaded with highly rated players and its not easy to beat anybody twice in the same year in the ACC, especially NC with the ref-court-advantage they get.
I really think adding a serviceable big man or two, and another guard next year, will help this team immensely.
And finally, hats off to Toney, our leading rebounder again (7), plus chipped in 9 points at a good efficiency rating. I had about given up on him about 2 weeks into the season, thankfully I was way off the mark on him. Congratulations to Mr. Toney!
The announcers did make ONE decent comment. When a team misses as many shots as UNC does…………. they will get rebounds. But agreed, PITT needs to rebound better and Toney bailed them out…… . again.
Have t commented on the last couple of games as I couldn’t watch them, and I don’t think it’s fair to comment on a game I didn’t watch.
What struck me most was the defense. Really solid for the most part, little lazy in second half, but still impressive. Played enough guys that they didn’t have to go zone. Dumbledorf really looks lost. Cost them a quick five points. Poor decision making. Anyone else notice McGowens ignoring X when he was running the point?
Announcers didn’t really bother me, better today than usual. Takes a lot to get respect in the BoJangles league.
Skippy did just fine, he does well when it’s in the flow. X still learning, gives up dribble and gets trapped too often, but he’s not a point guard. Brown, well, I’m a little speechless, who was that masked man? For him it was a great game.
Finally, up, down, up, down, up down, up…………..
And that surprises you. It’s called human nature. Some trolls may come out. But really had pitt lost I don’t think you’d get many more comments. Second go around with this team. Unless something controversial happened or pitt got blown out, 60 comments is what you’re gonna get. Boring second half. Reminded me of pitt football. Fans are probably still sleeping.
Anon – your correct, out-rebounded by 9 overall, but by 10 on the offensive boards (21 vs 11) is just way too many. However, this is not a tall team and the height they have is not strong enough to dominate. Don’t buy the excuse about NC having missed shots, NC’s shooting % was only 5% worse overall than NC’s but NC’s had 91% more Off Reb than Pitt. Math doesn’t work.
When you double team both UNC big men, you are not going to rebound well.
Tomorrow in the Post Gazette, huge article about Penn State blowout of Ohio State….down in the lower corner a small article about Pitt playing decently vs UNC !
Who reads the paper newspapers these days anyways. I guess the over 50 crowd?
The Nitters can gloat all they want about beating a top 25 team. How they feel right now doesn’t concern me. It just adds fuel to their superiority complex and further strengthens the bonds of the cult in Creepy Valley.
Seriously, their fans are dog crap. Every Nitter I see I say to them Penn State sucks. Hail to Pitt. I don’t care if they think it’s rude and I’m an arse. Because I am.
No you don’t. You blow them out by 50. But Pitt almost blew this one. Inexperienced team doesn’t know to kick someone when they’re down and they don’t get up while you’re still around…you stay down. Does anyone know how to street fight these days?
Ok. Then maybe if pitt would have won by 25 then. They were leading by 20 at half. But didn’t some team like Purdue just beat another team like Michigan state by 40 the other day. You say potato and I say eggplant. Bygones.
Yeah, enjoy the win. There will be lots to complain about later, but enjoy this one. Really good to hear the Pete was full. That, my friends, may be the biggest win today.
Tex…
You’re hating/trolling…whatever it is just gets old. Look at where Stallings sunk this program. We beat Wake and Nicholls St(which were bad losses), but that happens with young teams sometimes, this team would be i the thick of the race in the ACC, and tourney bound. Still may get in on the bubble, but my God there is truly no pleasing you…
I said it would have been nice to really blow them out but this team is young and doesn’t have a killer instinct or know the first thing about street fighting. When did the truth become vinegar for you cats?
I did fall asleep in the second half. That’s true. That’s what happens when your offense goes cold.
Good win yes. NC is garbage though. Let’s not get too high or drunk on the Koolaid.
X man played under control. That will be the key going forward. I think his benching the other game ago worked. Kudos to Coach.
You think Capel is satisfied and happy with this win? You probably haven’t ever coached a team if you think the answer is yes.
Paps, if you don’t like what I say, just ignore my handle. I won’t be offended.
Tx you are negative on almost every post to the POV. I’d be willing to bet NC trotted out more stars on the BB court today by a wide margin over Pitt. So for you “star gazers” chew on that fact for a while and come up with an explanation for their down season with all that star talent.
Per the pg link above, the Centre County DA states no charges being filed in psuX hazing case…anyone surprised?
Also the comment section for the story is disabled…
I totally enjoyed the hoop win yesterday…silly me.
you may be right … but I think it all depends as to whether the plaintiff can get some credible witnesses to testify for him. If he can’t, then I assume the courts will side with the DA. Note that I am certainly no legal expert and I could be entirely off base here
Bingo fwwb. He’ll need a credible witness to have a chance at winning this lawsuit. Didn’t anybody see the hazing other than the hazers? Will they testify?
I wonder if his dad recording the call with Franklin? And, I wonder why psu investigated four months after the kid left campus? I’m guessing that the attorney is the anonymous tipster?
And, wasn’t the DE Barber suspended for a game the following season for breaking team rules?
Temple’s S&C head was an FCS 2 time all-American O-lineman for App State and was the head S&C coach at Northern Illinois for 17 years before coming to Temple.
The former O-lineman makes his resume move to the top of my Pitt wish list.
Again, no former assistant should be on the list of candidates. Pitt has a golden opportunity to make a run at a BIG season in 2020.
The missing pieces need to fit in without a long time table to adapt.
On a related note, I noticed that in both the broadcast and written articles following the game, Xavier is being praised for his performance yesterday. Think we could dial back the criticism of Xman a bit? Especially the mocking of talk of X going pro somewhere down the road.
As Pitt fans I think we should be hopeful that X does make it to the NBA. In fact I hope all of our players make it to the next level. I would rank the criteria for attracting elite 5 star recruits to your program as:
1. Bags of money
2. Putting players into the pros
3. Consistently getting to the NCAA Tourney
4. Relationship with the Head Coach or an Assistant
So for the sake of the University and the basketball program, the more players going pro, whether after one, two, three or four years, the better.
Obviously misheard attendance yesterday. It was 12.376 which seems inflated from what my eyeballs saw, but still good. Looked like many more than 100 vacant seats.
In any case the Pete was loud. I think the amazing thing about the two UNC wins was that the first was won with big games from McGowen and Champagnie, and this one by Johnson and Murphy. with the first two guys having poor offensive games. That is really positive. and so is having strong games from Brown and Toney, but everyone is contributing something. The combo of Brown and Hamilton much better than last year, as are the combined replacements for Wilson-Frame. Even Drumgoole getting a number of serviceable minutes.
Toney’s all around game appears to be much improved over last year.
Overall three point shooting while still running hot and cold is coming from more guys this year, while mostly from Wilson-Frame last year. More mid-range stuff is working as well. Brown excellent yesterday.
Noticed X playing more like a point guard yesterday with his head up, made a great pass to Brown, when really needed.
Fouls were really a factor, with Champ on the bench much of the game and fouling out, but UNC lost two of their best to fouls as well.
Tough one Wednesday night and at 9 pm which will dampen the crowd. It would be nice if BC returns our football gift of turnovers, which handed them a bowl game.
The team played great on a big stage. UNC is still UNC. They are down but they still have more raw talent on their roster than most teams on our schedule. Like others have said, we have moved a long way from where PITT BB was at before HCJC arrived.
OJ was able to hire the best lawyers which in turn recognized that playing the race card was the way to go, It gets down to $$$$ … and big college FB these days rakes in the dough.
And in a place like State College, many area businesses thrive on PSU Football. It was the reason for the original cover-up … and it became the rallying point for Nitter Nation that the NCAA would actually not impose sanctions because how much it would the area economically (I swear I’m not making this up)
Okay, I thought of what I hope will be a decent question to ponder. Maestro, if you would to repost this as a new thread it’s okay by me. So let’s play Let’s Make a Deal. Suppose the AD came to the HC and said she got the BoD to pony up $500K for the offensive side of the ball (double entendre intended). That includes the the money from the outgoing S&C Director. Do you A) spend it all on a top notch S&C coach who has been program head at a Power 5 program or B) hire an assistant from a quality program and use the savings to also hire a QB coach. I would opt for choice A) for the coming year as line play will be so crucial to how the offense performs. Thoughts.
Maybe the Astro’s guy brings some “tricks” with him… OT Warren suddenly has the most nimble feet in college football! Our receivers don’t drop even one pass all next season!
Tex, honestly I know your just passionate. My cousin is the same way, me and my dad always jab on him about it(he has wanted every Pitt football and basketball coach fired since we were kids in the early 80’s) I just try to be realistic, this is a struggling NC squad, that Roy may very well have lost, but considering where this program was under Stallings, I’ll take every win at this point, and NC is still a brand in college hoops. Basketball can reach the Final Four if Capel continues to build a program(not going to be overnight). Football which I am at every single home game and always catch a road game, has a ceiling of 8 or 9 wins, unless they catch lighting in a bottle. The WPIAL isn’t nearly as talented as it was, plus the Golden Domers and Pedos are gonna get their share of that talent. That’s why Duzz hitting Florida and Georgia is a good idea. But when you consistently have a half empty off campus stadium, you will never compete with the Alabama’s of the world. You just won’t….but all is good, and I apologize if I came off like a d*!k…Hail to Pitt!
I love Tex’s passion… wish more on the BoT had it…. maybe Gallagher can have him come to a board meeting and give a presentation when he comes back for a tailgate and game in the fall…
^^ I agree Bernie, I really do ( I like Tx) but even a so called koolaid drinker like I’m called can find, see, and talk about something negative every once in a while. If something bad happens, I acknowledge it, if something good happens …. it should be embraced.
^^ Mark, you have to go with A, after-all, Whipple was once Big Ben’s QB coach. Plus Narduzzi needs to get this done ASAP!
Sad news indeed BigB, now I don’t know how or why this happened but people need to start paying attention and stop with the staring at your cell phones when driving and walking. Especially when walking around a concrete jungle like Oakland. Again, I don’t know the circumstances though.
and like it or not … it is also the reason that parents would prefer their kids attend a college with an actual campus as opposed to Oakland, where you have to really pay attention before crossing any intersection
^^ I see what you did there Mike, we “crossed an intersection” between sports and agendas 🙂 Question though, when did PITT sports talk become not serious discussion territory? jus kidding .. …. sort of.
Back to football, hope this link works. 3* CJ Dippre visited PITT over the weekend. Looks like a man among boys and better than a 3*. Don’t let the video fool you, he’s just big and strong.
I don’t think we need $500K, Mark. I’m thinking that we could pull Richard Simmons out of retirement for $70 or $80K. As an added bonus, if our performance matches our spend rate, Tex and a few others should be happy.
one final tweet about this issue …. wonder how many campuses have avenues like Fifth and Forbes running right thru the heart of them. The Towers, Cathy and the Student Center are among the buildings surrounded by both avenues.
I worked in Oakland with an office right across Fifth from Montiefore, and could not believe the continuous flow of traffic throughout the day
It is sad that a bypass around Oakland wasn’t ever feasible. Even more sad that light rail was never developed.Heavy traffic is a part of life in Oakland, and probably always will be. I always thought that multiple pedestrian bridges would help.
ever since the bus lane was added back in the 80’s or was it the 70’s, 5th Ave has been exponentially more dangerous…I’ve warned my own kids/family every time we are on campus
I recall someone being killed that led to the railing being added at the towers
I know I was close to stepping out more than once during my 4 years there
I stepped onto Fifth Ave after a Chemistry class bc I was talking to a friend. She pulled me back by the hoodie just as a bus flew by. Closest I ever came to biting the dust.
Back to recruiting and the uniqueness of Pitt’s Campus, at Pitt you get much more than just the book learning and beer drinking. The opportunities for life learning are endless, including how to negotiate the traffic and other risks associated with city living.
So sorry for the child that was lost yesterday and the pain that his friends and family are going through.
By the way Maestro, I know that politics are out of bounds, but we have had great conversations about campus life, history, and stories of being a Pitt student. Are you setting new boundaries?
They are changing Bigelow Blvd to make it safer for students crossing but it falls a little short which brings up another question. The neighborhood and city balked at the idea of shutting it down altogether saying it’s a city owned street. So why is PITT footing the bill to revised if they don’t own it? Especially with the mayor of Pittsburgh on the BOT.
While I’m at it, how in the heck didn’t PITT buy the old Schenley high school and the Pittsburgh Athletic Club? PITT wants to sit on the billions of dollars for what reason?
-1. I believe Andrews left on his own – cause if Duzz asked him to leave don’t you think a replacement was already lined up? IKR
-2. Unless the replacement is employed by Green Bay, San Fran or KC, this search is taking too long and the S&C process is being interrupted on most fronts. Most 18 to 21 year olds are not self motivated to workout. Who is leading these guys right now?
-3. As I said before, no assistant should be hired – we need a head S&C guy. Go pluck one from a very successful lower tier college program, pay much more than they currently make and get the 2020 workout process started.
It is way to quiet – I’m available for free if Pitt wishes to use my services. I’ve revealed 2 of my top 5 already.
I agree Rick, unless the original candidates and PITT couldn’t come to an agreement? The fact that all the assistants left as well tells me that Narduzzi was unhappy.
K’wan Williams, another PITT D-Back that maybe wasn’t that maligned but I’m sure not much appreciated or thought of during his PITT days and certainly not of thought by many to be NFL caliber. Kind of in the line of an Aaron Berry. Also Lafayette Pitts among many more. Thus making it a PITT fan thing.
Williams fell victim to the coaching changes and would have thrived had Wannstedt been kept on board. The D-line would have stayed strong and Williams would have been joined by Hendricks, Pitts, and two kids who decommitted for the 2011 class and ended up at WVU and Virginia Tech, respectively.
“What really stood out to me about the visit was when they took us to the basketball game, it just seemed that everyone there was so into it,” said Wilson-Lamp. “That just tells me how passionate Pitt fans are for their sports and it was crazy to see how hyped everyone was.” Andrew Wilson-Lamp
Cole Anthony made the trip. It doesn’t mean he is playing, but this one might be a game-time decision. Hopefully he sits. Pitt needs to win this game.

UNC is an elite rebounding team. Roy emphasizes it more than Dixon even did.
Nothing to see here. Pitt is not a great rebounding team but this game is not an indictment on it.
By the way, rebounding totals are a terrible stat. Rebounding percentage is way more important.
UNC is 9th in the country. Pitt is 189th.
Pitt had no shot at out rebounding this team.
Not even worth looking at or getting upset over. It would be like Titans fans being upset that KC has more passing yards this weekend.

The former O-lineman makes his resume move to the top of my Pitt wish list.
Again, no former assistant should be on the list of candidates. Pitt has a golden opportunity to make a run at a BIG season in 2020.

LikeLiked by 2 people
Toney’s all around game appears to be much improved over last year.

Thoughts.

More thoughts on the S&C search:
