POV Login & Comment Info

Editor’s Note: There are changes taking place with WordPress. I don’t have a choice in accepting any of these changes. Regardless of what the company wants to happen I will say this; The Pitt POV is a non-profit blog and will not be ‘monetized’ in any way, shape or form. You will never have to pay a penny to read or comment on here. The only price you ever have to pay on here is adhering to respecting others and civility.

Hi, this Reed and Pauli Kohberger, doing tech support for the POV. We’ve been monitoring the comments/logins situation. Here is what we can best figure out. First – WordPress modified its blogging platform and that is when the “Anonymous” comments started showing up. Bottom line is that WordPress is doing this to force commenters to commit to a logged in status (where your name and avatar show every time after you’ve logged in) under WordPress. Same with having you login under a Facebook account. Why? Who knows?

So – here is the way forward and your options: When you comment on a post on the Pitt POV, the following box now shows up. From left to right, the upper buttons options are to log in with WordPress, log in with Facebook, or don’t log in at all but provide a name/email for your comment.

Option #1:

If you were to simply write a comment and hit “reply,” without choosing any of the three blue options, your comment would be listed under Anonymous. It may also take a few minutes to show up in the comment section (around 1-3 minutes) and will not have a name or avatar attached. You could add your name at the bottom of the actual comment text but again, you would have to do this for each comment you write.

Option #2:

If you click the WordPress icon to log in with WordPress, this appears:

By inputting your WordPress username or password, or connecting with Google or Apple (you may have to input your Google or Apple password for this), you can log in to post comments with your name and avatar showing from then on. If you don’t have Google or Apple you can start a WordPress account (it is free).

After doing one of the above you should only have to log in once, unless you’re using a public computer, an incognito window, or have cleared your browsing history and cookies (e.g. clearing your cookies from WordPress). If that happens you would have to log in again.

Logging in with Facebook is similar. Input your email/phone and Facebook password, and you will be able to log in with your name/avatar and have it show up on every comment you make from then on.

The third option is a bit unusual and very repetitious… If you click on the email button you get this:

For this, you can simply input your preferred name and email (and website, if wanted), and you can post a comment with this information. However, because this is not an actual login and has no authentication, it is possible to impersonate others, and provide false information. In addition, you will have to input your name every single time you comment, instead of it already being provided.

The choice is yours… I suggest that if you are a continual reader and/or commenter then log in using WordPress or the Facebook option and your comments will show as they always have done since 2016.

If you don’t want to do that you can either have “anonymous” show up or do the third button and input your email and name every time.

Choice is yours… But I say again that you will never have to pay a penny to read or comment on here.

HTP!

  1. Well, guess I’ll test it out and see what’s what. For what it’s worth, Mikey and my brother the Nitter both can’t handle me telling them how good the Nits are this year. It’s like they’re afraid to admit it. But I promise you, if they are somehow left out they’ll say they’re the 75 Stillers. Love twisting their tails.

  3. Pitt News photos from Cincy game (click on photo)

The text to one photo reads:

Junior Tight End Gavin Bartholomew (86) celebrates with teammates following a successful play during Saturday night’s game against the Cincinnati Bearcats at Acrisure Stadium.

Not a TD but hyping a “successful” play. Boy, that sums the offense up…

    1. Same here WLAT. My only issue is that it never refreshes the comments. I have to go out to the original posting, go back in, select comments and scroll (at times) through hundreds of comments.

Anyone know how to fix that?!

It’s always a good idea to copy your comment as you type in each thought and especially at the end before sending it along.

I’ve always try and leave my signature at the bottom for this very reason.

  6. My comment on the mess that masqueraded as a Pitt football game last Saturday is: can we stop playing teams from Ohio and Michigan. So many of these games have ended badly over the last few years. Maybe we can play one of those Bay Area teams instead. Also, just checking to see if my log in words. (Thanks for the cheat sheet Reed and Pauli. And thanks for holding to a high standard of integrity. I’m sure you’ve had plenty of chances to cash in.)

  7. Reed, thanks for your efforts (with your daughter) to make Word Mess a usable site.
I know that if there was a viable alternative we would all be using it.

The news for my JETS is absolutely horrible…JETS Nation has been hoping that Rodgers injury would not be so serious as to have him miss the season at 39 years of age (40 next season). It will be a real slog in rehab…I believe the team has a solid coach and an excellent defense and maybe, just maybe they will find a way with QB X to make the playoffs,,,,between Pitt and the Jets I can only hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

    3. Sorry isnore99 but right now I’d be more worried about all the draft choices the Jets gave up to get Rodgers. As a consolation prize it looks like they will only have to give up a 2nd round choice in 24 as opposed to the 1st rounder if Rodgers played 65% of the plays this year.

      1. If you are in the #1 market in the U.S. with an owner that has mega mega bucks and your team is the Pittsburgh Pirates of football change and taking risks makes sense. The Jets have turned over their off-field and on-field leadership and despite the PARADE of losing season the fans (I am not alone) have remained loyal. The hiring of a coach and GM who really “get it” and the MUCH IMPROVED draft choices have placed the team in a position to be contenders,// REAL CONTENDERS to make the playoffs (See THE PIRATES FAILURES). The chance to get one of the VERY BEST QBs who still had gas left in his tank was in my opinion and the opinion of the overwhelming majority of JETS fans was the right move. The football GODS amazingly continue to look down unfavorably on the fate of NOO YAWK’s version of the lowly Detroit LIONS (note their improvement this year). If you want to continue to be a bottom feeder then that is your choice…so, if the Stillers CRASH FOR 10 YEARS HOW ARE YOU GOING TO FEEL? HUH!

Unless they see it as a huge money making operation, which it certainly could be.

But then how could it be considered College football anymore and would it then generate enough money to support the other sports?

It could create a more level playing field and generate a lot more national interest.

    1. The Pitt OL is not capable of generating a solid run game from what I saw of them the first two games. Carter is probably Pitt’s best runner only because he’s able to power himself forward for some additional yards when met at the line of scrimmage. So I’m afraid Pitt will have to reply on Jurovec’s passing in the WVU game. Unless the Pitt gets several key turnovers I’m afraid WVU will win this game going away. Take the points if your a betting man.

Phil was bad 80% of the time and no excuse for the degree and frequency of the inaccuracy and absolutely no excuse for the fumbles – BOOO!!!!! to the clearly not even average grown ass QB who IF had at least played average, we win the game

Cig brought Phil here so deserves the other half of the blame for the loss

one Pitt receiver is just that – **receiver* rather than a playmaker that fights for the ball, any guesses who? HE should’ve caught a few even though Phil’s inaccuracy makes it extremely tough, but unfortunately Phil’s inaccuracy should make every WR understand that every catch will be an adventure

but that doesn’t apply to Reynolds and Konata

as decent as our D did in the the 2nd half, I thought the LB crew was weak and the DB’s played soft in coverage, and the line didn’t do much better than OK

weak tackling but especially #23 who seemed to make sure he was blocked and didn’t make any plays

two other points that need mentioned are 1 the “sit down” on the late interception, WHY?!?!?!? and then the other “sit down” by Phil on the late scramble/run up the middle that earned a 1st down but looked like could’ve gone for another 5-10 yards closer to striking range

all that and frankly while it was tough “watching” the game on the ESPN gamecast, it looked like a much more winnable game seeing the video and would’ve been even more frustrating to witness live

yet that makes me hopeful for WVU, and of course everything will likely hinge on Phil’s accuracy and of course Pitt’s D tackling better and not letting Donaldson and others run all over the field

hopefully Phil really does show he likes playing away, otherwise I think the season hangs in the balance and no way my preseason bet on over 6.5 wins will not have a chance

If he plays poorly, he must come back to a home game with UNC with increased Pitt fan scrutiny. No question, Jurk has made it harder on himself, and let’s hope the season is not the casualty..

  19. As far as the Big Poutine, I have been excited since he transferred ( then again I was/ kinda maybe still am a Phil backer, lol.) He moves real well, has a very nice arm, and can process quickly. He does, however, have issue with touch. Sometimes that big arm gets the better of him and he tries to throw it through a wall.
I’d rather play Phil and have him do well at Hoopie-Ville but looking at the schedule there may not be a good stop to put CV in until later in the season. As Mike White said, PJ looks slower and not as athletic as in HS, and 35 added lbs ( think most added in his head) will do that. I think we’re kinda stuck with Phil and Cig for the rest of the year. Oh boy!

    1. I just watched the spring game again yesterday. To me he looks bigger than most college QBs and yes, he has put on even more weight.

If you go back and look at the ND and BC rosters when he was there you can see that he went from 204 his first year at ND to his now Pitt roster weight of 236.

Plus it looks like he wears a rib/chest protection vest that weighs 3-5 lbs. If that isn’t a protective vest then he’s even bigger.

I don’t think he’s 6’5″ either. One Pro Day at Pitt I used their measuring stanchion and it showed me at 6′ 7”. I was 6’6″ at the time.

He looks 6’3″ or at most 6’4″ to me.

  21. The problem with trying CV is that apparently it takes 10 years to learn Cig’s offense.

Now the new Cincy Coach being able to install his offense in one spring/summer, with new players, is a downright miracle – apparently…

IMHO, Duzz made a couple poor offensive coach/personnel decisions that are going to haunt him. Instead of continuing to trend upward, our OC/QB combos are going to erase any Pickett-era momentum, IMHO…

    2. Unfortunately, I think Pickett is going to erase the pickett momentum. I really want to be wrong about this, but I think he will have very good games and very bad games. That is not a recipe for longevity in the league. Health, smarts, and consistency is.

Whitehead is on pace for 54 interceptions this year! You go kid!!

The cincy game was really really bad. Many holes to fill. QB appears to be a mess. I give our current qb the next two starts. If he improves, great. If he struggles, we need to start looking at next year and give CV some real game snaps. Next years schedule lines up for a special season and I wouldn’t want to start that year with a rookie under center. Look at the schedule and tell me differently. Spoiler alert for Reed – if you want a tough schedule don’t look. It’s cupcake city and will be ranked from top to bottom as one of the easiest schedules in the ncaa in my opinion.

Note about Phil. I will defend him a bit here. I know, I know. How dare I ever try to say something positive or be a realist. So here comes the reality statement. All the bad tosses are not on Phil. Crazy thing about pro offenses. The best pro offenses only work when each “pro” gives 100% effort on every play. Pitt’s non-targeted receivers do not go 100% each play when they are not the target of the play. Watch for that. You will see that some of our receivers don’t seem to be expecting a ball come their way and are just not ready for it. No excuse. Those players need to learn to be pro’s. So not 100 on Phil. But who am I, I’ve been making bad decisions since 1968. PS-that’s not my born on date. That’s just when I started thinking i was smarter than my parents! 🙂

How could the throws be so off target? Fundamentals matter. That’s footwork and stepping into the throw like in practice.

I understand that there are now good players rushing at them and there is a tendency, if not a need, to rush but come on…especially for Jurk, let’s plan to throw quickly to the first read then dump it off or throw it away if not there.

Get some rhythm going then work things a bit further down the field. I’m thinking it improves over confidence for the O-Line as well.

For whatever reason he is nowhere near the QB he was in HS, ND and BC.

    2. Dan, I can ID your posts even without seeing your name above them.

As to the next game. Who knows what will happen? If every game was determined by the way a team played the week before 50% of the teams would be undefeated at season’s end and 50% wouldn’t have a win.

We’ll get a prediction thread up soon but I wouldn’t be surprised all that much if we squeak out a win.

Probably on a 4th quarter WVU turnover or something like that…but it ain’t a lock that we lose.

Odds as of this evening are Pitt giving away one point. If I was going to bet though I’d throw a dollar bill down on the home team.

WVU lost to what might be a very very good PSU squad. Better than Cincy I think, so if they take us down it should not come as a shock.

      Reed, who’s predictions suck.

  29. I think some of you are coming down on Jurk pretty hard. Admittedly he was pretty bad, but one game isn’t enough to judge a college QB. He needs more time to get comfortable with his receivers and get the timing down. The receivers as a group didn’t do their part and the OL is not playing well. The poor play calling didn’t help.

  30. Even good QBs have bad games but what worries me about Phil — the same that did with Slovis — is that he seemed to lack touch most of the time and maybe more importantly, hardly ever led his receivers. Even HS QBs (good ones anyway) know you have to throw to space when your WR is on the run, not try to hit him in the chest. At least 4-5 of his throws to Means were where Means ‘was’, not where he ‘was going to’. That’s a bad sign — too robotic and not showing on-the-fly estimation ability.

Maybe he just truly sucked last week and will turn it around, but I will keep a close eye on the placement of throws to space, not the man. I give him a full first half and if we don’t see clear improvement from last week, he has to sit, at least for the rest of the WVU game.

He did his best, and while it clearly wasn’t very good, (though neither was the line play nor all of the receiver play,) he isn’t the one who put himself and left himself in the game.

    That falls on the coach(es)

Think about it.. you’re a kid doing your best because someone else put you in that position. It’s not your fault if your best isn’t good enough and you’re still asked to keep on playing..
    Just my 3 cents.

    2. That’s why I think the “boos” were really for Coach Cignetti and not so much for Phil.

I didn’t boo, but I wanted to boo Coach Cignetti for the awful job he did…

      Go Pitt.

  32. My thoughts on the Pitt-WVU Backyard Brawl:

I’ll first say that I have worked with several folks who live in Morgantown and, without exception, they are great people. But their fan base has some of the nastiest, foul-mouthed embarrassments I have seen anywhere. I have been to numerous Pitt-WVU games in Morgantown, football and basketball. I have personalized license plates on my car that identify me as a Pitt fan and the first thing I do when I park in the lot is to remove my plate and place it out of sight in my car. Wouldn’t want to lose my plate or have my car trashed while at the game.

Second, if there are any Pitt fans reading this blog who will be going to both Morgantown and to South Bend, I would like to hear their opinions on the contrast between the two environments. At the end of the night in Morgantown, the tailgate lots will look like third world trash heaps. Why? I tip my hat to all those attending our tailgates in Red 5A. During and after our tailgates, that area is spotless. All of our trash is properly placed in trash bags, tied up, and ready for pickup by the maintenance crews. This isn’t hard!

Finally, all of my West Virginia acquaintances detest the hillbilly image that outside folks constantly assign to them. Well, I can assure you that several times during Saturday night’s game, the stadium sound system will play a song called Cotton Eye Joe by a group named Rednex. No matter where you are in that stadium, there will be some bearded clown with no shirt and wearing bib overalls doing some spastic hopping thing in the aisle during that song. Hey, if you want to lose that backwoods, hillbilly persona, you can start by telling the PA system person to not play that song! Otherwise, you have earned that reputation.

    1. I worked with a lot of West Virginians in the mining industry. They were some of the finest people I’ve ever come across.

And then, at the other end of the spectrum, there’s that segment of Eer’s football fans…

I think I ran into that lead singer at the Stones Concert a few years ago.

  34. On the QB issue put it this way:

In their best seasons Voytik had a 140 QB rating and Jurkovec a 138… (Slovis was 127 for us in ’22). This season PJ is at 133 for us and that is only because of Wofford.

PJ wasn’t that great of a ‘get’ in the portal…just seemed that way as he was so hyped by the staff. That is only because he’s following on the heels of another blah QB in Slovis so they had to sway media and fans right off the bat with PJ.

But Pitt fans will do what they did with Slovis and point to stats to justify PJ. Those three TD passes against Cincy were just that individual passes into the end zone and caught by a receiver.

PJ didn’t take command and push the scoring drives downfield on his great play aside from one long pass. Cincy helped greatly on two of those drives with pass interference flags.

Stat numbers do tell a factual story but is not all that accurate when describing what actually went one out on the field.

I know that I use stats a lot but I also try to fill in other details when doing so…

  36. I’ve watched a lot of college football over the years, and high school, youth, etc. and frankly think that’s about the worst QB performance I’ve ever seen EVER

and Cig, evidenced by his statement that they have been through tough games before, knew who Jurk was and brought him to Pitt

mechanics? footwork? couldn’t get in rhythm? smdh

the Hoopies are salivating through their gums 🙂

    1. forgot to mention intramurals

I was QB on a pretty good team and I think/know I’d have been able to throw better and far more accurate footballs than PJ Saturday

      and not fumbled

and ran for that extra 10 yards or so

not kidding and if Christian isn’t head and shoulders better and we all know Yarnell is

      we’re in trouble

  37. I think I’m so PO’d because after “watching” the game on the ESPN gamecast I just figured we were beaten by a better team and maybe we were lucky to keep it close but now after actually seeing the performance(twice now) I think this coaching staff really didn’t do their jobs including many different ways that would’ve made a difference

less PJ, more running, less Bub, and far more

I rarely if ever have felt a game was called completely wrong but this game needed at least the 4th quarter done differently

maybe Morgantown will make everyone focus better but the one that matters most is Phil and if he starts the first series or 2 poorly, Christian or Nate need to be brought in

damn, I’ll be pissed Saturday night if we lose and in fact am going to golf a charity event with my Hoopie neighbor tomorrow and of course I’ve got nothing to make me feel I can take the chance of talking crap 😦

losing to PSU is bad enough(ever) but in a year where the WVU football team isn’t supposed to be all that good, I NEED THIS WIN and can’t seem to find any hope going in

      1. I agree .. and interestingly, many publications referred to that game as a “blowout”. I didn’t see any of it so my comments may be crap but, without the late PSU TD to beat the spread, the score, et al, seemed fairly close.

  39. Just finished re-watching the Cinci game. Question for everyone: how did Sam Hartman play against us in the 2021 Championship game 2nd half after getting his a$$ kicked in by Pitt’s defense? Not too good I think you will have to agree. And it’s not because he stinks. It’s because getting your a$$ kicked affects the quality of a QB’s play.

Also, there were some plays that Phil made. Both running and passing. Some of his passes had mustard on them. Am I saying Phil played well. No. He stunk. But how much was that on him and how much on the offensive line, the RB and WR blocking and WR route running? Or Cignetti’s play calling?

BTW, for those that say that Pitt’s comeback was fueled by Cinci’s penalties, do you guys ever play sports? The rules provide for a penalty because the defender interfered with the offensive player’s ability to make a play or otherwise advantaged the defense. The penalty call is not ivy tower philosophy in action. At least it’s not supposed to be and for most part the penalties called did interfere with Pitt’s offense ability to make a play.

    1. Maybe Jurk is a 6th year SR., but it is his first season working with Pitt’s WR group. There were too many drops (Bub) and poorly run routes to place it all on Jurk’s shoulders. Pitt’s receivers can’t seem to catch the ball in traffic.

    1. MajorMajors this is a repeat of the movie from last season when Narduzzi and Cig never replaced Slovis. You will not see Jurkovec replaced unless he’s injured. Losses to WVU and NC won’t make a difference IMO even when the Jurk’s stats comtinue to look similar to what they looked like last week.

  42. Still no answer as to where all the offensive linemen have gone. If there is so much depth why are they starting a true Freshman instead of a back up with at least some experience. We all know how tough it is to learn the OL positions. Makes no sense..

  43. Pitt WVB not looking good against Oregon right now. They are down 2-0 the second set went badly as they seem to forcing their play looking for something to work on offense. Oregon perfectly placed on D and making impressive digs. That isn’t happening with Pitts D. Can they turn it around?
