2022 WTE Production Lost – Georgia Tech

In 2019, Geoff Collins took over the unenviable task of replacing Paul Johnson and his triple option offense at Georgia Tech.

Like Pitt, GT is located in a pro town. BC and Miami are also in a pro town but are not carrying the additional burden of a close by large and nationally relevant state university. IMO, Collins promised a rapid changeover in personnel leading to wins. He was able to upgrade the recruiting and used the TP, but the wins never came.

By the end of the 2021 season, the Yellow Jackets were 9-25 (7-18 conf). Collins was on the hot seat. Four games into the 2022 season, GT was 1-3 and Collins was fired.

Enter Brent Key as interim coach. He was a four-year starter as a player for GT (1987-90). He was hired by Collins in 2019 as the OLine coach.

In his first game, he pulled out a shocker. His second game as HC turned out to be another upset. He ended up leading the Jackets to a 5-7 season by going 4-4. He was announced as the full time HC three days after the season ended.
