  1. Fede supposedly coming off the bench to play some according to Capel. I’m skeptical of just how many minutes he may get even if he does come off the bench.

    1. Depends how twin #1 does – if we dominate the game then Fede gets another day to heal.

      I can see that happening.

Knowing Fede can play some today is a bonus.

Bottom line is our veterans need to outplay their veterans. This is a senior ladened game.

      Go Pitt!

if the reffing WINS it for Pitt, I will feel slightly less thrilled….

    ….but THRILLED!

  4. Let’s Go Pitt! Hoping to see some back door plays when Iowa State stretches the D to take away the three. Also think Burton’s mid-range game around the free throw line will be critical to counter. Fingers crossed!

    2. should’ve had that 2nd one too

2 weak passes by Pitt but everyone loving it so far

ISU will need to change but we need to remain patient on offense until they do

    1. I think that was just a knee test. Capel doesn’t want to use DG for 38 minutes though. If we win there’s a game Sunday.

      1. I actually found it. Pitt was the first D-1 team in 25 years (0-348 before them) to win when scoring 60 or fewer points, shooting 35% or less on two-point shots, shooting 60% or worse on free throws, and getting outrebounded by 20 or more.

When Iowa St got the momentum for while Pitt shut it down with help from atrocious shooting but still very solid play in the second half.

I expect Hinson to come out of his funk and hopefully Fede is a bit better…the twins got experience today playing high level basketball that will be an enormous plus going into next year.

Playing against Miller’s Xavier will not be easy, but I (please isnore no jinx) really believe that we can top them!!

Both San Diego State and Alabama started their games yesterday around the 3:15 mark. SDSU plays in the first game tomorrow. Alabama plays in the last game tomorrow. So no rhyme or reason that I can see. Must be assigned game times based on assumed fan interest and TV ratings?

An 18 point win is always a morale booster in these tournies…so the team should be heading into Sunday with more then a bit of confidence, one could expect they may score 80+ against The X-Men.

  36. From The NY Times:

The First Four was no problem for Pittsburgh. Neither was the first round.

No. 11-seeded Pitt on Friday became the 11th team relegated to the play-in games of the men’s N.C.A.A. tournament to win its next contest, with a thorough dismantling of Iowa State.

On Tuesday, Pitt played a close First Four game against fellow No. 11 seed Mississippi State, trading leads in the last minute. But in Friday’s first round, the Panthers raced out to a 22-2 lead en route to the 59-41 win. Pitt held the Cyclones to just 23.3 percent shooting, including 2 of 21 on 3-point attempts.

In the second round, Pitt will face No. 3 seed Xavier, which narrowly avoided an upset against No. 14 Kennesaw State.

Could the Panthers have an even deeper run in store? They have a few role models in the recent history of First Four teams.

Of the 10 previous First Four teams that went on to first-round wins since the field expanded in 2011, five won their games in the round of 32 as well. And two of those teams made it to the Final Four, both as No. 11 seeds: Virginia Commonwealth in 2011, which fell to the eighth-seeded Butler, and U.C.L.A. in 2021, which lost to No. 1 seed Gonzaga. — Sara Ziegler

  40. One thing stands out to me about this team that previous Capel teams lacked; they execute plays. Be it breaking a full court press, inbounding the ball, running an offense set; this team executes. One of the most frustrating things about Capel teams in previous years were that they could not do the simplest of things such as just inbounding the ball right after a timeout. I would end up talking to the television and finally quit watching them because of that.

Being seated at 11 was not so bad as I and others stated before the ACC tournament. We now face Xavier which while formidable is very much beatable. No matter the outcome of next game, this team has been a pleasure to watch just due to their tenacity!

    1. yes, I said it when Capel first subbed in Fede that he shouldn’t have at that early time

better passer, better shooter, slightly better hands, equal length to block shots, equal lateral quickness, similar ability to run the floor

less strong with the ball, gets ball taken away more, fast and stronger on the hedge

I think they should share minutes more equally when Fede is 100% and hopefully that is the case against X

      Like

      1. sorry ^^^ Fede faster and stronger on the hedge but so far twin does it just as well with no fouls!!!

and you don’t need to be strong hedging but must get there quickly and into position stopping feet, the fact that the twin might get crushed could get the charge call more easily 🙂

  41. I would say yes, but Xavier’s big guy looks like a lumber jack and plays hard and efficient. We need our twigs, I mean twins to continue to hustle and play smart basketball.

The three point shot will be open and the twins should have the green light IMO – they seemed hesitant at times yesterday.

I’d take the 5 points Vegas is giving and feel Pitt wins a close 2 point game.

Pitt has beaten in this order for the tournament:

    SEC – Miss St
    Big 12 – Iowa St

Next up is the Big East – Xavier

If we beat Xavier, the bracket gives us either Big Joke – psuX or Big 12/SEC bound Texass

One game at a time – grind out a win verse Sean Miller and be a program everyone begins to talk about.

Win and move on to the Sweet 16.

    Go Pitt!

  42. This is amazing from the box score. Burton, Hinson and Elliot combined for 3-20 FGs and 19-21 FTs, which is how the game was won.

    Overall the team went 14-41 FTs, 6-19, 3’s and 25-29 FT’s.

Free throw percentage is what makes this team special.

Nellie Cummings has elevated his game in the tourney and Sibande has been super solid.

Ran into him last Tuesday when Grandson’s Citadel baseball team played the Spartans. Citadel lost 25-10. Asked the nearest guy where the ticket office was? He said it was free and introduced himself as the AD. We chatted for 5 minutes or so. When he asked what I did, I said I was retired and spent time writing for the POV. Then my daughter and son in law joined us and we found a seat.

Good thing that Fede, Guillermo and Hinson have made him a non-factor in Pitt’s future.
Love to see Capel get a solid power forward. I think that and a capable guard or two would maintain the upward trend.

This year proves how valuable senior experience and leadership is to a team like Pitt. They will never get the high caliber freshmen like Duke, but can win with a combo of transfers and recruits that are coachable.

    1. My transfer preference would be a sharp shooting 3 point specialist or two. Kills me to say it but imagine PSU’s Andrew Funk on our team. He averages 42% from the three and 45% overall. He was 8 of 10 from the three against A&M and scored 27 points. He can’t do that every game but you are likely to beat any opponent when he does. If you can’t get the one and dones, I’ll take that 3 point stake to the heart like Hinson’s at the end of the MSU game.

    1. That was me, tvax. I swear the ESPN box score said 5 when I checked it during the game. A foul was called against Pitt just before going to a commercial break and I never heard the announcers say who was charged with the foul. Blake had collided with the ISU player with the ball and went straight to the bench and I’m pretty sure never returned to the floor. And when I checked the box, I’m pretty sure it said 5. Who knows? Either I read it wrong (a very good possibility) or it was updated later.

      1. re: announcers

along with my overboard hatred of bad reffing, I hate as much the mouthpiece announcers who either just say stuff of what must be a list of cliche’s they have printed up for each team or game

or the announcers who support the refs incorrectly with nonsense that makes no sense as it applies to the play in question

I’m sure my internal bias causes me to read it wrong but there are many examples of this in support of the B1G teams with the announcers inconsistently supporting that league against their opponents,,,,, not 100% but far too often to be coincidence

      2. Agree that was confusing when I heard the announcer say Hinson had four fouls then he appeared to get another one and was taken out of the game. Then the announcer said he went to the bench with four, very confusing. Also he did not return to the game which was a little odd although he wasn’t needed and not one of the better foul shooters.

  48. Dan would understand this much better than I. It seems to me that the adjustment Pitt made to take on Miss St has really helped the D.
Crowding up the inside has made it easier for the twins not to be pushed around and has more guys to get rebounds. They have also gotten steals when teams try to pass through the maze. It seems like in hockey when they pack down in front of the goal.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Very observant KMan! What Pitt is doing is lining up man to man with what appears to be their regular half court pressing defense. Then when the ball goes inside it all collapses into the paint. Pitt can do that because neither team was a 3 point threat.

Farleigh Dickinson did that to horrible outside shooting Purdue, in fact they never went out on Purdues shooters, letting them have wide open threes. They made 2 out of 20+ attempts.

Xavier will be a different story. They are a good outside shooting team. Pitt will have to play honest defense to win. H2P

      Like

    2. Pitt packed the inside because, like Pitt teams of old, Iowa St. couldn’t make outside shots. They dared them to shoot. They made their 1st half run taking it to the hoop. Capel made a great adjustment there.

  49. The announcers have been fine. If they said 4 when he had 5, that’s on the production team. They feed them with the info. The “it’s getting hot in here” line after the Nelly hoop was fantastic and perfectly timed. Avery Johnson is fantastic, too. If you can get past his voice, he knows his stuff. His partner, who does Philly games, is dry but I love Avery’s basketball IQ.

Paul Zeise has a good write up on the Panthers, and I tend to agree with him. After watching our defense crumble the last few weeks, giving us a couple of offensively challenged teams to start is resetting some confidence.

We’ve won two games without Hinson and Burton doing much … the next two games, is the two game we need them to step up.

Looks like all of the Fed2 missed action (fouls/injury) is starting to pay off as the twins are rounding into shape at the perfect time.

Everything happens for a reason … Let’s go take down Sean-y boy.

  52. Xavier has one player that I fear, Jack Nunge a 7ft 240lb+ monster who can do it all. Nunge has a strong 3 point shot and obviously is a force inside the paint. If Fede is still limited in playing time (I expect him to still be somewhat sidelined) our twins could run into difficulty
trying to defend him. My concern is running into foul trouble. If ever there was a game where we have to have our 3 point cannons on target it will be this one against the less than perfect role model Coach Miller.

Okay, the timing of the time-outs still doesn’t meet the POV standard…

I’d really like to see a proven high-level BB strategist on our sideline – who wouldn’t – but somehow this team is 24 and 11.

    1. Funny….you can tell they really bought into this Big12 “is the best conference EVER” non-sense that was being carried out there by the media.
It wasn’t like this team was 30-2 or something. And wasn’t use to losing.
They lost quite regularly since the end of January. Like 9 losses & only 4 wins.
When I looked over their roster, I could tell almost immediately it was a roster of
retreads of not highly recruited players.
2 of their best players were at St Bonaventure and this is not the Bonnies of Bob Lanier.

2 years ago they went 2-22 and 0-18. So last year, lightning struck, making it to the Sweet 16. They should be thankful they rebounded from 2 years ago, so quickly.

        1. Yes I thought about that when I was typing out that description of their roster. Since you could call all of these transfers….retreads if you like.

However I kept it in, as imo Pitt’s transfers were of a higher caliber and were from more legit programs…….unlike theirs from places like Eastern Kentucky, Denver, Wash State and St. Bonaventure. Other than F2 and he had been recruited by several big-time programs.

So hope that clarifies that !

  55. I’m not liking what I’m seeing on the Xavier intel report.

So we can be like the Brit Generals in charge of Operation Market Garden in WW2.

We can just ignore the intel and just ‘hope’ for the best. And be arrogant about it,
    at the same time.

This could be a ‘Round Too Far ‘.

  56. Intel? They’re terrible on defense. We’ve eaten up on teams terrible defensive teams. We’ll drop 80+.

Interesting comments on the uniforms. I love the classic look but I totally can get behind this mentality … Whatever works … and whatever leads to wins … ride it.

“Honestly, we picked black because we think about it as we’re coming out here to take over something,” he said in the Pitt locker room Friday after the 59-41 victory against Iowa State. “Majority of the time, when you see a team that’s taking over something or a bank robbery … they got on all black, right? We came in with all black. That’s what we own.

“We’re not robbing a bank or nothing, but we’re out here trying to come in and take something. Because everybody said we weren’t supposed to be here. So, we’re going to continue to take wins.”

Told that Pitt is 5-0 in the black uniforms — Syracuse, Georgia Tech and Florida State during the regular season, plus two in the tournament — he had a quick answer.

    “Let’s keep wearing ‘em.”

Pitt, the No. 11 seed in the Midwest Region, will play No. 3 Xavier in the second round Sunday. When Jamarius Burton was asked if the Panthers will wear black again, he made their choice clear.

“If we’re the lower seed, of course,” he said.

But if it helps their minds focus on winning, I’m liking the uniforms.

      Go Pitt!

  57. Just to add one more piece of information to the confusion over Hinson’s number of fouls, the play-by-play shown on ESPN lists 5 separate entries of fouls on him, including the technical for the flop. The fifth foul is shown with 9:31 left in the second half. After those foul shots, Pitt’s lead was 10 points. Question, with so much confusion or disagreement on the number of fouls on Hinson, what would have happened if our coaches had put him back in? Would that not be a technical on the coach? It’s hard to believe that Coach Capel would have left him in the game if he knew that the T was his fourth. The whole thing just seemed weird to me.

  58. Sheyer is a good HC – he’ll make adjustments at the half and get the dookies back on track.

  59. hard to make adjustments to being punched in the face, gut, body, etc.

Filipowski looked scared after getting his face blasted and Tennessee had enough bodies to keep blasting

if we get defended and it’s allowed like that tomorrow by X, we will be in huge trouble imo

funny seeing the well coached Dookies not be able to get the ball inbounds, must be a Dookie guard/coach problem

Dook missed FT’s early and 3’s way too often to climb back in it

that along with getting Roach in foul trouble, they really crumbled

  65. I remember when Pitt was a strong defensive team when they got to the dance the refs always called it closer than the old big east. Now they let Tennessee mug Duke. I’m not a Duke fan just making an observation. Coach K would have been going nuts on those refs. Maybe it was payback for all those years of intimidation.

  75. On this day back in 2011, I went to the Verizon Center in DC as a guest of The Hartford … mid court seats and the CBS cameras were right above my head. I could touch them! I will never forget the unadulterated glee my hosts displayed at seeing an underdog win. All I could do was grit my teeth:

    From this morning’s Richmond Time-Dispatch:

2011 — Butler upsets top-seeded Pittsburgh, 71-70, in one of the wackiest finishes in NCAA tournament history. After Butler’s Andrew Smith gives Butler the lead with 2.2 seconds to go, Shelvin Mack inexplicably runs into Pitt’s Gilbert Brown as Brown tries a half-court desperation heave. Brown makes the first free throw to tie the score at 70 but misses the second, and Howard grabs the rebound only to be fouled even more inexplicably by Nasir Robinson with 0.8 seconds left.

Butler players, from left, Khyle Marshall, Matt Howard and Shawn Vanzant walk off the court after the Southeast Regional third-round NCAA tournament college basketball game against Pittsburgh, Saturday, March 19, 2011, at the Verizon Center in Washington. Butler defeated Pittsburgh 71-70.

  77. Xavier starters have a size advantage on Pitt and were a very good three point shooting team this season with 40% of their scoring coming from beyond the arc. That was not the case 2 days ago in round 1 of the tourney where Xavier was 2-12 for 3’s.

The size advantage starts with their PG and leading scorer who is 3” taller than Nelly.

From there, each position player for Xavier is 1 to 2” taller than their Pitt counter man.

Keys to Pitt winning today (IMO) are:

    (1) continue playing tough & relentless D
    (2) find an offensive rhythm and get an early lead
    (3) play the hot hands regardless of who they are
    (4) rotate the bigs for fresh legs unless that big is playing lights out
    (5) hack the lumber jack (X’s big Nunge) where needed – we have at least 15 fouls between the twins and Fede

Go Pitt – I DON’T HAVE BAIL MONEY!
