The Title Game: Pitt at Miami Basketball Thread

Raise your hand if you thought Pitt would be playing for the ACC regular season title?

Nope. My hand wasn’t up either. Let’s see what they can do…

As far as the game goes I always think Pitt will win until they dont…so I’m upbeat at present.

  3. I think JB and Elliott lose their guys often on D

Nellie of course it limited on D and does a bit too much reach in stuff

that said, MIX IN SOME ZONE, like VOR and others have said!

we are far more at risk in a game of extra fouls called

  7. Pitt simply can’t match Miamis intensity. They’ve gotten every loose ball and all but 1 O rebound.

  8. Wooga Booga from Philly killin Pitt. 9 points all on 3’s.

Pitt needs to go zone, don’t have the legs to compete with Miami …with Man to Man.

Need to save whatever energy they have to score offensively.

  9. Elliot again ice cold. 0-3 on 3’s. I hope he has a good 2nd half. We’re lucky Wong has only 4 point. Miami has 22 points off their bench and are playing 8 guys.

  15. Pitt seems afraid to shoot a 3. First Cummings and then Jorge. They can’t keep trading 2s for 3s. Where is the team that was hitting 12 – 14 3s per game? Only Hinson is hitting them.

  16. Fouls are 11 for Miami, 10 for Pitt. A few more foul shots for them. Bot teams shooting 49-50%. Difference is rebounds and points off rebounds.

  17. I think we have this game if we keep going to the hoop. Most aggressive team goes to the free throw line more often than the opponent, which equates to free points.

Turned this on when we were down 9. Not much difference in talent here. I do think miami has a better point guard from what i have seen this far. Rebounding a concern in this game.

  38. Burton got his points but doesn’t seem like the same player he was earlier in the season. He seems frustrated and takes bad fouls. He rarely shoots a 3, and tries to force it inside against bigger guys with more weight.

And Elliot seems like a head case at this point, not looking to score from behind the arc and with no inside game. Pitt was best when everyone was a scoring threat.

  39. Pitt played Miami much better than I expected but close doesn’t count in BB and hence they are the #5 seed. They play the winner of GT and FSU gamr on Wednesday at 2:30. For what its worth I don’t like the possibility of having to play GT right now. They are probably playing their best BB of the season currently.

  41. A great and most unexpected year produced by Capel and his men.
Miami has far more talent made more free throws and dominated the boards
and Pitt still nearly got the upset.
This team will be better than half the NCAA tournament teams picked and on any given night can beat anyone. If they don’t get picked it will be a travesty.

    1. Pitt just has to take care of business on Wednesday and they are in. With another loss, if Pitt falls to the 11-11 play-in game in Dayton that would still be more then alright for me and be considered a successful season.

  42. Moving forward, Burton and Sibande will be hard to replace. Cummings and Elliot both were plusses this year but shouldn’t be missed next year. Hinson, if he wants to can be an ACC first teamer next year. An off season should work wonders for Fede and the twins. If Dior is as advertised and Capel lands a couple strong transfers to make threes and play defense the team will be a contender. That without counting on Hugley, Jeffress, Santos or freshmen to make a difference, which of course someone(s) will step up.

  43. Burton has to be the most improved player in the ACC. Watching him last year I never would have guessed he would have been this consistently strong this year. My only criticism is at times he tries to do to much and should pass instead of forcing shots, but he does make many of them so…
It was great to have a big physical guard who could stand up to anyone in the conference.

  44. While Fede seems to have hit the wall a little in the last two games, he was up against some very physical guys. His improvement has been remarkable and made as much difference as anyone this year. Also the play of Guillermo from beginning to end of season is remarkable.
I look for huge things in their Pitt careers as they continue to grow from boys to men.

  45. Folks – Some folks here have made reference to Coach Dan’s pre-season analysis in the past couple weeks. I went back to the October archives and re-read it. If anyone else is interested in reading it, I will save you the trouble of finding it:

    https://pittpov.com/2022/10/12/coach-dan72s-outlook-for-pitt-bb-2022/

    Prescient!

And if one read through the comments, he or she will also be treated to Coach’s thoughts on how a basketball game can be fixed.

A few mentioned in the comments that they doubted Capel’s ability to coach and one regularly reads that in the game threads. But it is fair to give him credit for weaving together the right group of players to play a rather selfless style of basketball.

Also looks like credit – in addition to the Benjamins – should go to oft-maligned Jason Capel deserves credit for finding a few of the kids and cultivating relationships… at least according to Tim O’Toole.

While expectations may have changed as the season progressed, if Pitt does not get a bid to the big dance and settles for the NIT, it will be right in line with the pre-season prognostications.

Capel – and his legion of former HC assistants – will be back next year…apparently much to the chagrin of a couple people here. The odds of him actually remaining through the end of his current contract are more likely today than when Dan penned his analysis last fall. Count me among the pleasantly surprised.

Its a fun team to watch play, warts and all. Hope they make a strong pitch for the big tourney this week.

  47. Another reason for Capel being coach of the year is that he had to adjust first to losing his projected star point guard and then losing his leading rebounder and starting center. Both major reasons for the slow start and early losses. I discount the loss of Jeffress since he was the weakest link last year and probably would not been much of a factor this year but who knows?

In any case a great job of coaching when you consider that Pitt was picked 14 in the ACC before the losses of key players.

  48. I respect Dan’s basketball knowledge and because he is human, he is not always 100% correct, however, he hits the bull’s eye quite often. I would bet that less than 3% of the POV’ers would have predicted during the pre-season that the Panthers would be in consideration for a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
When we take a look back there are several ink blots on our recruiting resume…the decommits of Jalen Hood-Schifino and Judah Mintz. Two talented guards who have found life outside of the 412. Coach Capel has done a fantastic job of filling the gaps through transfers and the portal. I have no reason to think that we will suddenly crash next year.
Will DJ stay inbounds for the 2023-2024 season?? My guess is YES!! Will FF and the twins continue to develop my guess is YESS! Will Hinson be a star next year?..A HUGE YESS!
I also believe that our incoming recruiting class will be very strong contributors next year.
The transfer season and portal opens in mid-march and based on our showing this year I have to believe that we will have some excellent talent looking to move into the Burg.

Obviously, there are still question marks….Jeffress ??? Santos//shows talent, but will he develop in Pittsburgh or transfer??? Hugley ???

I am very satisfied with our performance this year despite running on fumes at seasons end…NDU loss terrible but being topped by a STRONG Miami team on their home court was not a surprise.

Think positive…we have a strong future (possibly this year and almost definitely in 2023-2034.

  49. OK… thank you for the kudos on my preseason predictions. Icall Em as I see em. A huge loss was Dior as he would have spelled both Nelly and Burton.

I painfully rewatched the entire game this morning and as mad as I was with Sibande in that final play
driving up the floor w 9 seconds left, it appears he thought Pitt had a time out! When he glanced at the sidelines while dribbling, he cost Pitt at least 2 seconds and his clock awareness was non existent! His proper play would have been to dribble into Wong and take the three off the dribble. . If he misses, he might get fouled and he had players under the boards for a rebound. When he again hesitated and threw a pass to off balance Hinson, there was .05 on the clock.

This was not the ending I wanted to see for Pitt but I give them total credit for the intensity and never quitting. But, this was Not the “ending” ! That is yet to come.

He had a triple double and was the second best player on the floor. The best, their point guard, is going to Maryland.
Eight others on the floor all have scholies to major college teams.

One win then a loss for us will not impress the selection committee one bit since the first win will be against an inferior opponent.

An NIT bid would at least get Pitt a few more games to play and maybe a look at Dior. I doubt very much that Capel will play him at all in the Big Dance. but he might in the NIT.

Dan’s pre-game talk (and it has to be) for florida state (not duke), is like the Herb Brooks speech at the 1980 winter olympics! Create your own destiny. Really ???

How about trying some new wrinkles in either the offense or defense, as these teams
know exactly how Pitt plays, their strengths & weaknesses. Neither team is exactly
baffled by Pitt’s defense or it’s an ability to beat their Man to Man, straight up.

And to be honest both GT & FSU present some matchup problems for this Pitt team.
Both of those teams while not great are more athletic than Pitt.
Especially when it comes to Elliot & Cummings.

So I’m not exactly confident that this team, playing the way it is now, won’t be a one

One final game with Lefty’s team facing Dean Smith and UNC the fouls were 19 on MD and 3 for UNC. I actually do a pretty good Lefty sideline imitation as he hitched up his pants during stressful times

What I’m getting at is that Pitt will have the worst officiating of the year on Wednesday. It will be blatant and obvious and Pitt will have to overcome that and GA Tech or FSU. Somehow Pitt must win the game. As fans, just be prepared. .

    1. Do you remember a few years back when Pitt beat the Tarholes at Greensboro… the refs tried to cal it for UNC…the announcers sounded disappointed with the outcome….and the look on the faces of all those folks who took the short ride down I-40…

      Bless their hearts.

    2. Remember that pretty clearly, Maryland won their first 2 ACC tourny games, after finishing 2nd in the conference. Played the Tarholes in the Finals and got totally jobbed.
Ending up losing and not even making the NCAA’s even being 27 & 5 as ONLY conference champions made the Dance back then. I think they went to the NiT (when it was still a very good tournament) and won it. Maryland’s star player was lefthander Tom McMillan of Mansfield, Pennsylvania and he was the number one HS player in America coming out.
Len Elmore, long time NBA player was also on that team. Lefty Driesell always wore those plaid sport coats…which were the rage back then. Norm Sloan & Wimp Sanderson & Bobby Knight most always wore them too ! I had a few too ! lol

    3. Maybe a bit early for you, but I clearly remember watching The ACC War in 74. IMHO that game was the Defacto National Title Game, despite all the whoopla over State’s ending Wooden’s Bill Walton led UCLA beast.

And yeah, it was obvious even to that teenaged Tarheel fan that the Ref’s ALWAYS screwed Lefty. Always. He was a Rodney Dangerfield joke come to life. The Ham Burger the Ref’s ate for lunch 268 out of 271 times. But the man could coach a team of frogs into Princes.

Again, IMO, he was always given too much blame over Len’s tragic death. He was a hard passionate competitor, and a good caring teacher for the young men he mentored.

    1. Finishing 5th in the conference standings, losing 3 of their last 5.

Cannot make it losers of 4 of their last 6 on Wednesday.

I’ll bet all 4 men would trade the ACC awards for W’s instead of L’s.

  67. Saw a PSN article where they threw out some possible names for Pitt’s next women’s BB Coach. Here they are:

—Caroline McCombs, in her 40s; GW head coach; StoneyBrook head coach, Pitt assistant under Agnus Berenato (last time Pitt was any good).
—Tory Verdi, 40s, UMass head coach, 24-5 in A10 this year; he was at E. Mich with HL; took them from 8 to 24 wins in 3 years.
—Megan Griffith, mid 30s, Columbia HC; 20+ wins last 2 years – first time since 80s…
—Bridget Mitchell, 35ish, former Pitt ass’t under LW; HC at Northeastern; played at Duke.
—Joanne McCallie, 57, Duke HC for 13 years, with 10 NCAA tourneys; resigned when Duke would not extend; was at Mich. St for 7 years.
—Melanie Balcomb, 60 and hasn’t been HC since 2015; Xavier and Vandy HC; supposedly has expressed interest in Pitt job…

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s none of these, but it’s quite a range of coaches. Dan-the-BB-Man has said on here that he thinks Pitt should go for a young up-and-comer woman HC. I agree (though McCallie sounds intriguing depending on why Duke wouldn’t extend her…).

Hoping Heather hits a real homer on this one…
    Go Pitt.

    1. Agnes Berenato was a friend. I sent her three prospects from Maryland …. None stuck.
My HS AAU Point guard, Vicki Brick went on to start for Maryland for four years. You can look it up. Agnes was at Georgia Tech when she played. That’s how we met. At a MD /Tech game.

It was talking to Agnes and Vicki many times that I came to understand how difficult it is to recruit women basketball players to Pitt.

Lance White was known as the best recruiter in Florida for years. Pitt hired him ….. and fired him because he couldn’t recruit!

Agnes was very sick with cancer and coaching at a small college. She was a great coach and a better person. No idea if she’s still with us.

We need a coach who can create a buzz and pull this program up by the bootstraps. No idea who that is but they’d be wise to start with a tall center. Women’s College Basketball teams are built from the inside out. H2P

      Sent same to Heather.

  68. The more I think about these last two losses, the more frustrated I am. It’s great that Burton, Hinson, and Sibande are getting these plaudits. By and large, they deserve it. But there have been some serious failures of leadership and confidence these last two games, particularly in the Miami game.

For example, in the Miami game: Cummings repeatedly passing up open jumpers, Sibande panicking at the end of the game and giving up the ball to a man behind him rather than taking the ball to the hoop, and Burton costing the team 2 possessions with charging fouls, just trucking over defenders (and not even when driving to the hoop!). There are just too many moments where these experienced players make poor decisions, and if they don’t fix it tomorrow, they’ll be NIT bound.

I hate to be negative after such a great season and finally having something to cheer for. But these players set a bar and some expectations, and I’m hoping — but am not entirely confident — that they can live up to them.

    1. I wanted Nike to shoot the 3. No guts, no glory…he could have been a legend at Pitt for decades if he shot and made that.

    2. Also, I think a significant part of the collapse is legs. It’s been a long season and some of the players simply hit the wall.

Hoping a few days ret and the magnitude of the moment helps the men climb over it and keep charging on.

  69. Dan, seems Agnus Berenato is alive and well as a motivational speaker.
Last coached in 2021 at Kennesaw State.
Agree she is a nice lady.
You can find her on LinkedIn.

      1. My Agnes B. story:

I took one of my at the time high school exchange daughters from Germany (who btw represented Char Valley HS at that years State Track Tournament) to an evening ‘Youth Camp’ Charity Event at the Pete Event Agnes and Pitt Athletics hosted for the fans. It was a great experience for Jana as she got real ‘on the court 1 on 1’ coaching from Agnes for a play, participated in team drills and a half court scrimmage run by Agnes and the staff, and afterwards got to meet some of the the players, tour the locker room and get her photo taken with me in the Press Room…it was a wonderful fund raising and educational event for the kids – an Agnes specialty.

For the adults at the event they held several fund raisers including a Chinese Auction type event, where IIRC 75% of the prizes were bottles of prime alcohol in some form or another. I put all our tickets on a bottle of Scotch – didn’t win. Well, damn if Agnes didn’t out right win two of the bottles…and proceeded to buy some of the other prizes from the other winners! She did enjoy herself.

( I actually did win the 50/50 – but immediately and publicly donated the $150 dollars to the Cancer Charity the event was being run for. Best cheer I ever received.)

I do miss Agnes. We were season ticket holders for most of her tenure here – missed her first year or two. Her post game speeches to the crowd could be Epic, and often were. Her Chalk Talks were ‘Events’ all by themselves. She knew how to work a crowd.

Attending in those years was a lot of fun. We rarely missed a game. The ‘Pink The Pete’ UConn Game was awesome. We took about 30 high school exchange students to the Game as a group and they got the royal treatment from the folks at the Pete and had a blast.

Anyway, long post but Agnes deserves more then some recognition.

  71. I have scheduled an ACC Tournament Round 1 Thread for 1:30PM.

    You can discuss anything.

I am in Columbia as my grandson’s Citadel baseball team is taking on the South Carolina Gamecocks. Saw Citadel play Winthrop last Thursday in Rock Hill, SC. He saw action in the game by warming up the pitcher while starting catcher put on his gear.

I expect a U of SC win as the Bulldogs have some pitching but can’t hit.

  72. I have been saying all along that this team makes mistakes that are uncharacteristic of such an experienced team. I can see why Capel saves a time out for these last second plays. They have improved on the number of turnovers lately, but there are still too many. In some cases when Fede comes out he actually slows down the ball movement and leaves no one underneath for an offensive rebound. They just seem out of sync right now, and they are afraid to shoot the 3 so there is endless movement until the clock runs down and they force a shot.

  73. Everyone knows that Fede will not put the ball on the floor or shoot it from near the arc, so they can double the player with the ball and cause a turnover or a bad shot.
