THIS is the most important game that remains in the season as it could affect massively our weak ranking numbers if we lose

  5. Not Pitt’s best first half. Cuse playing much better than last two games. Pitt struggling against Cuse Screens big time. Capel not switching hoping to shut down their long range shooters.

The Notre Dame game is going to be a lot tougher than people think with it being Mike Brey’s last home game. Hope Capel drills it into his team not to overlook them!

This game is gonna be an instant classic in Pitt BBall lore for a lot of reasons…taking over 1st Place in the ACC in late February with only 2 games to go (Hey ACC writers, 14th??? Really?) … putting up huge numbers (99)vs Jim B & his Orange … a sellout at the Pete and the biggest most intense & loudest crowd in the last 10 years … the cries of ‘Traitor’ coming from a revitalized and energetic Zoo whenever Jonah touched the ball … and to cap it all off the 99th point being made by the walk-on Senior Adam Frisch on a thrilling left handed layup! Did I mention Pitt is now Your First Place ACC Men’s basketball team?

……even and especially in bouts that made it to the 2nd period where he was up 12-4 at the time he pinned his opponent 🙂 😦

(and btw, Will was only scored upon once during the regular season his senior year with a takedown and then 2 other times at States during the semifinals match which had the first period end up down 5-2, the only time he trailed at the end of a period that year)

      .

Nellie did have some errant passes but without thinking about it at the end of the game I’d have never guessed he ended with 13 assists

Gotta give a well deserved plug to Hemingways. That place was absolutely packed and yet they kept our drinks filled, food orders on time and checks processed quickly enough to make it to the game with plenty of time to spare. I don’t know how they do it. But they had us well prepared for what we were about to experience at the Pete.

As Dino71 said, it was a day, a game, an experience that made renewing your season tickets a no brainer.

  27. Last night’s box score was incredible. Rebounds and turnovers made the difference. 62 second half points. Syracuse shot over 50% from the 3 line but wasn’t nearly good enough. Kind of funny listening to the announcers gushing over the greatness of the Syracuse players who were getting trounced in the second half.
Watching the bald guys before the game touting Miami and Virginia even Clemson but saying very little about Pitt….Talking more about how UNC may claw their way into the tournament.
I guess the awful loss vs FLST doesn’t look as awful now that they beat Miami in Miami.

The ACC overall is much tougher than the Pundits are giving them credit for. They just can’t stand it that Duke, UNC, Syracuse and Louisville aren’t on top of the basketball world.

How dare Pitt have a good team. It has been a long time since a Pitt coach was able to pull his seniors at the end of senior night to thunderous applause, they turned Pitt’s fortunes around, none of them will play in the NBA, but as a group are very special. They beat a lot of very good teams to put this record together and hopefully have a lot more to prove.

  28. Last night wasn’t all about the seniors of course, Hinson may be the most important cog in this wheel of fortune, when he is hot Pitt is hard to beat. Pitt however would be nowhere without the most improved and still improving Federiko Federiko, who has been doing a marvelous job offensively and defensively vs much more experienced and highly touted guys.
Also GDG is showing great improvement at both ends of the court, he is going to be a force next year. He is really running the court much more effectively and no longer looks lost at times. Credit to the coaches for the progress of these big men.

  29. There should be a couple transfer guards that can shoot threes, play staunch defense and make free throws that would love to replace a couple of the graduates next year. If Capel has learned anything it is that upper class experience and leadership has made the most difference this year. Far more important than raw talent. Also the unselfishness exhibited by these guys is what really makes a team.

Also not to be overlooked is the passing and catching skills of these guys another skill that has been sorely lacking for a while.

  30. I was out of town with Mrs. Erie visiting friends, so I missed baseball and of course the Boeheim Classic.

We had an early dinner after play golf in a simulator for the first time and sat down to eat just sat the game started. The first score I saw was tied at 23. Then it was 30-30 with 2 minutes to halftime. It just so happened the Miami vs FL State game was on one of the tv screens – lost interest when the noles were down 25. As we got up to leave I glanced at the score and FL State just hit a three to pull within 3. Was pleased they pulled off the upset.

On the way back to our friends house I peaked at the Pitt score and we had built a ten point lead midway thru the 2nd half. Looked quickly at the UNC score and smiled at their big lead and shut down my phone until all three games had concludes with THREE PITT VICTORIES.

First place in the ACC on February 25th with 2 games to play. Regardless of how the week unfolds, on Saturday, March 4th our Pitt Panthers will be playing for the ACC regular season title.

Thank you Jeff Capel for putting together a group of high character, fine young men who play good basketball together and thank for you post game presentation of the game ball to SR Aiden Fisch (sp). I have become an admirer of the painting you have created. Coaches aren’t perfect, none of us are and I have been critical of some of your in game decisions – I will attempt to be less critical.

OT: golf in a simulator is different in a good way for my game – chunk shots go further (no ground to chunk) and the wind conditions were minimal where we played. I shot 39-39 (78) -best score ever by 2 strokes and with my handicap I netted 33-33 (66).

Back to the topic at hand – how was the Zoo with Boeheim – did they really print money with the nose picker mug?

    Liked by 6 people

  31. Regarding the reception for Boeheim at the Pete last night, there was one unique event that put it into perspective for me. Since early in the Coach Capel era, the announcer stopped introducing the coaches as part of the starting player introductions. I don’t know why but I could easily speculate.

Last night at the end of the Cuse starting player intros, the announcer introduced “the coach of the Syracuse Orange, Jim Boeheim”. And the Zoo and crowd gave a deafening, “BOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!”

What surprised me even more was that Coach Capel was still not introduced at the end of the Pitt starting players. That has to be a preference of Coach Capel as he has definitely earned a great reception from the fans at the Pete and would have gotten one. I have to say that kind of disappointed me. The man deserves the praise.

  32. Pirr moved up 2 places in the NCAA NET rankings (54’th to 52’nd) after the QAD 3 home win over Syracuse.

The big mover in ACC NET rankings was Clemson’s (74’th to 58’th) after their QAD 1 away win over NC State.

Miami only dropped six spots (28’to 34’th) with their home loss to QAD 4 FSU. Miam’s loss also took away one QAD 1 home win from Pitt. When Pitt home lost to QAD 4 FSU. Pitt dropped from 50’th to 65’th. One month later Pitt is still struggling in NET.

There is a lot of moving parts to NET rankings, and I have only figured out some of them.

For me, I always like to beat ND and Miami in any sport. I can guarantee you this Pitt basketball team wants to win out – they are competitors with a capital C – they have been discounted as pretenders most of 2023 (borderline disrespected) – they are playing for each other (teammates, coaches, fans and the university they are growing to love) – and finally they are playing with a chip on their shoulders and doing it with maturity and respect for the game.

  37. I posed the question earlier this year, was this team better off without DJ and Hugley? Hind sight 20/20 but yeah it turns out they were. Hopefully moving forward that won’t be the case, but don’t think you would have seen the development of FF and GDG if Hugley was healthy and hard to understand what the rotation of guards would have been with DJ. In any case great to see these seniors have their last hurrah season. Everyone contributed greatly to the success which would not have happened if they didn’t have the opportunity (minutes).

  41. One thing that really stood out for me last night was the speed and crispness of the passes, the accuracy and ‘deceptiveness’ of the touch passes and the astoundingly quick shot release on 3’s after a good pass…especially by Nike and Blake.

Those two shooters obviously have Capel’s green light anytime they touch the ball, rightly so IMO. They do miss a few, but because they are taking (mostly) open looks the numbers are in the shooters’ favor, so far. It was fascinating to watch thenm in the second half – they caught and shot so quickly it was like watching kids shoot at a basket in an arcade. No fake passes, no lining up the shot – just fire and forget and get back on D.

I’ll single out CDG, he has made the touch pass into a brilliant offensive weapon. The guards are especially good at it, and if I may say so, I believe that their are several set plays that depend on quick and deceptive touch passes to work…and last night work they did.

Kudos to the coaching staff for focusing on these technical aspects of the game this year in practice – the hard work has been noticed and it has paid off big time.

    1. Coach Capel had an interesting take on shooting – and Blake’s shooting – in his post-game remarks. Coach said he’s fine with guys shooting as long as they are taking good shots. That’s whether the shots are going in or not – keep shooting good shots.

When asked whether his definition of a “good shot” was the same as Blake’s, Coach smiled and said that yes, sometimes he does have to tell Blake to “slow down”…

What impresses me about Blake’s shot, besides the vertical jump and quick release, is how often his 3s are nothing but net – even when from downtown…

      Go Pitt.

  42. Thinking of Barnes has my blood boiling again but Pederson was just as bad. His ego lost the battle of script Pitt vs Pittsburgh but the damage each of them (plus Chancellor) caused lives on today.

Anyone miss football paper programs? Or paper tickets? I spent 48 years in the printing business and the story of the loss of both could fill a book. It had to do with cronyism with the BOT and the ADs never considering the unintended consequences of changing printers and overthinking expense vs ticket holder satisfaction.

Last but not least, it was under Pederson’s first stint that the decision was made to fire the in-house Pitt Ticket Group and hire (farm out) to an offsite ticket firm. I wonder how the cost of eliminating Pitt ticket direct employees salaries vs customer satisfaction with an outside firm that cares nothing about Pitt has worked out.

I’ll be anxious to hear how we all deal with the complete elimination of paper tickets this year?? I’ll be standing in a long line to get into the stadium right next to you! What could possibly go wrong with that!

  44. Apparently MOV or Margin of Victory weighs pretty heavily in these NET ranking.

An example of this MOV in action……Clemson was bumped up 26 spots in NET to No. 58 after
their thumping of Syracuse, 2 games ago, by 18 points. And they won huge against yesterday against NC State, by 25 points.

Pitt is currently No. 52 in NET, don’t know if yesterday’s blowout win is factored into that, as
the NET chart says Pitt is only Up 2 from previous week. And we beat Syracuse by almost
as many points (17) as Clemson did. Although the slim MOV against GT (8 points) could
have negated the move we should have got with Syracuse blowout.

Could maybe possibly explain Pitt’s low NET ranking as we’ve won a lot of close games by 1, 2 & 3 points. UNC twice, Cuse (1st game), Wake, UVA, Miami, FSU & GT by 8.
(hopefully this gets posted, as I did another researched post about Pitt Road wins which disappeared into sinkhole, lol)

Our players try hard but tough going against taller and/or better players. Today we had 33 rebounds; our opponent 44. We had 6 offensive boards; our opponent had 12. They got to take 5 more shots than us and beat us by 5 points. It was an away game.

Strangely enough, in this the final regular season game, Coach White shortened the bench and only played 8 players. Pitt stayed in the game but couldn’t overcome the rebounding deficit…

    Go Pitt.

  46. Funny:
I remember when consistently winning close games was clutch!
Always remembered and respected any person or team that got better when game was tight.
Shooting 3’s up 15 with 3 minutes left is easy. Hitting them consistently when tied or down a couple a lot harder!

    1. When it goes wrong, is there a way to resolve it at the entry gate to the stadium?

I ask because it is tough to travel with Mrs. Erie’s health issues – smooth entry to the stadium early before the crowd surge is critical.

      Thanks for the feedback…

      1. Erie – the only time I had any problem with the electronic tickets was when I forgot to move my tickets to my iPhone “Wallet” until I was already at the stadium. Make sure you put the next game tickets in your “Wallet” at least a day or two before the game. When I’ve done that, I’ve had no problems…

  48. I was speaking of technology in general. I’ve never had a problem at the stadium or the Pete. Plus tickets are easy to transfer once you know how, and I’m 72 and not a techie.

  49. A psu player – Lundy maybe – shot 1 for 16 today. But he was only 0 for 11 from three. He normally averages 14 points per game. Psu led for most of the game before losing…

Maybe he has a tough exam tomorrow…

Or, if I didn’t know better, I might suspect someone had a bet on the game… 🤔

    Go Pitt.
