  1. BC is playing well on both ends of floor. Pitt looks like their head is not in the game…..shooting like junior high school players…..but, I believe the cream will rise to the top.

How could this team not be ready to play tonight – at home!

6 turnovers in the first 10 minutes.

  3. seems they tried to do some different things with FF offense working v Post underneath and Hinson some back to the basket stuff

it looked different enough to be not just random but trying to expand FF’s game which would then only open up more space if they need to defend more underneath

BC was trying to be very physical which is now being dialed back by the refs,,,, should help Pitt along with Hinson hitting his 3’s

nice that Hinson really seems to be working hard on his defense underneath to help FF, really using his size defending and rebounding with intensity

  4. Could Hugely = Wally Pipp next year? He better hope he gets to play the 4 next year…the sky’s the limit for FF.

    1. Yep. Coming off the bench is his only option because no way FF or Hinson lose their starting spots. Even if Blake lost weight and looked like a small forward, I don’t know if he is quick enough to defend outside from the three spot.

What a great problem to have.

  7. I must admit that when Pitt was last looking for a new basketball coach, I was hoping they would hire an up a coming young black coach. Earl Grant, the BC Coach now, was the guy I had in mind. But I didn’t think he’d be interested in coming north…

I guess he ended up taking a job even tougher, and even farther north, than the Pitt job. I wonder if Pitt contacted him…

    Right now, I’ll take Coach Capel… 😊

    Go Pitt.

  8. It probably didn’t get shown on TV but the halftime contest was a jaw dropper.

For a free 12 month lease on a luxury appartment, the contestant must make a basket from the 3 pt line and then turn and make a basket at the other end from the same spot.

A kid from the zoo comes out to give it a try. First shot, nothing but net. Just lucky, right? He turns and heaves it to the other and of the court, SWOOSH! Score. The crowd roared. Had to be a one in a million shot.

  9. Our next game may be our toughest contest of the regular season (VT).

The Hokies looked good beating UVA two weeks ago – granted that is their hated rival. Pitt needs to be ready to play tough D for 40 minutes. If that is the main game plan, the scoring will happen.

I wish I could be in the arena for this game – March Madness is coming back to Pitt fans for the first time in a long time and I like it.

    1. EE I agree. The Hokies are a yo yo team with an up and down record…they have played well against good teams and lousy against some bad teams. Note: Tech has an 11-3 record in games played at home. Pitt has been shooting lights out, but I expect a much more difficult game than we had against BC. NO LET DOWN FOR OUR PANTHERS,,,we must keep the motor running and add this road win to our resume.

Last night was like an old Big East game with BC trying to out physical Pitt. Didn’t work so well.

Federiko seemingly reaching another level of play, no longer being pushed around. Gaining confidence every gameThe Seniors and Hinson tough as nails.

Picked to finish 14th in conference play, Pitt playing with a large chip on it’s shoulder.

  11. Angels in the Paint!

Some of us older guys may remember the 1951 movie “Angels in the Outfield.” The film is cool because it was shot at Forbes Field, it had a couple neat shots of the Cathedral, and my high-school baseball coach played second base for the Pirates.

In a nutshell, the Pirates open the season playing terribly and losing consistently. Then as a result of some prayers from a little orphan girl who’s a Pirates’ fan, an angel visits the Pirates’ manager. The angel tells the manager that if he stops swearing and losing his temper, perhaps the Pirates will win some games. The manager starts behaving and the Pirates do start winning games.

Okay, now the same scenario is unfolding only a Fran-drive away from Forbes Field — at the Pete. Pitt loses 3 in a row and looks terrible — dead in the water. Then inexplicably the Panthers starts winning games – and winning big games.

So what was Coach Capel’s conversation with the angel? Cause surely, right now, we have Angels in the Paint, Angels at the 3-point line, Angel-to-Man Defense, Angels on the Bench – you name it.

Oh, and the movie has a happy ending. The manager marries the reporter covering the big turnaround and they adopt the little girl. Will the Panthers season have a happy Hollywood ending….

And whose prayers worked? (I’m guessing Annie’s…). And maybe Scooter is the Angel. Nah!!

    Go Pitt.

I think I even said something critical of him during one of those Zoom meetups Reed had last year or so,,,, but as I recall, Reed forgot to hit the record button so fortunately it’s only my word against anyone else’s that I made THAT error

    2. I advocated the hiring of Capel when they were going after Hurley, having had some exposure down to him here in Central VA. My contacts at VCU thought – and still think -very highly of him and his Mrs. I was excited when they hired him.

For the past couple years, I was a bit red-faced while the program continued to struggle.
So, I am glad he is having a good year. He deserves all the credit for assembling this roster. Good for him and good for Heather for having patience to stay the course. Looks like they both gotten on the same page when things aren’t going so well either. Fingers crossed there is more good stuff to come.

Heather has done well enough that she will be a candidate for higher profile jobs. Not bad for an in-over-her-head compliance person, huh? The job at Pitt is a much better one than the one she took back in 2017.

    3. While I wasn’t as hard on Capel as many, if you weren’t questioning the future of Pitt Basketball after last season you just were not paying attention. The turn-a-round he and his staff have engineered is nothing short of miraculous. Remember Pitt was picked to finish 14th in the ACC by the experts and no one could question that, in fact after West VA and Michigan they looked pretty right on.

That is why this season is so special, no matter what happens and Capel deserves every accolade that he receives. That being said, I don’t think that anyone that was critical has much to apologize for, it comes with the territory.

  19. I’ve heard from old HS basketball AAU friends all wanting to know why Pitt isn’t ranked….why is their RPI 57??? One commented Pitt looks like a pro team vs Highschoolers!!

To me, that is Pitt’s biggest advantage…. Pitt actually runs an NBA Offense which breaks down their opposition on a one on one basis. With our older experienced players, I don’t think they fear any other team out there. I know I don’t. Kudos to Capel and staff. I think Pitt is a 5 seed in the NCAAs!!! But, one injury, one unlucky ref call etc.

Enjoy the ride fellow fans. I sure am!!

    1. Dan – I’m enjoying the ride too.

To answer your question as to why Pitt is not ranked, I think you have to look at the fact that 9 of Pitt’s wins are from Quad 4 and we have a Quad 4 loss.

That is the only explanation I can come up with.

If they keep winning one game at a time, who cares about the rankings. If they happen to stay hot through the ACC regular season, they have a high probability of being the #1 seed for the ACC tournament.

We should be ranked then but I’m not counting on it. Let’s take our lightning to the big dance snd see what happens – win out and no one can debate the ranking at that point. I know, I’m dreaming…with a smile to boot!

      Go Pitt!

      1. i like your thinking but man, our feelings sure aren’t in line with the so called experts. i’ve seen 2 brackets that both show us as the AQ for the ACC. One (espn) has us a #9 seed and the other (USA today) has us as a #7. Forget all that Quad BS .. how can the winner of the ACC tourney (and most likely a top 4 finish reg season) be no higher than a #7 ? Especially considering that if we win the ACC tourney, we probably will have to beat either UVa or Miami again. Both which still get higher seeds. Crazy stuff. H2P !

        1. not sure if we will win the ACC tourney but we certainly are in the driver’s seat for a Top 4 finish and a double bye to start off. in order not to be 1-4, we basically need to lose 3 of our remaining 5 and UVA, Miami, Clemson, Duke and Syracuse need to win out from here. Possible, but seems like a very low probability. H2P !

        2. I’ll take the 7th seed if you give it to me now. That path plays well for a team like Pitt.

An 8 or 9th seed is tough because if you win the first game you play a #1 seed.

          1. i don’t mind the 7 spot either but … even though lots of things can change between now and selection sunday, i’m concerned that this late in the season, the “expert” bracketologists have us at 7 or 9 and that’s after getting the ACC’s AQ. where would they put us if we don’t win the tourney ?

  20. For those who don’t know or understand the NET (Ncaa Evaluaton Tool) here is an article explaining it.

    https://www.ncaa.com/news/basketball-men/article/2022-12-05/college-basketballs-net-rankings-explained

Two of the most important things I learned was that “NET” values an early season loss/win the same as a late season loss/win. The second is that Quad loss/win is dependent on where the game is played.

I think NET rankings are updated nightly. I am not sure if a loss/win is in the non-com section of the schedule is “frozen” or changes as the season progresses.

Maybe someone(s) can give a better, simpler explanation.

Another FLST type game is always possible hot vs cold shooting, balls bouncing the wrong way, foul trouble etc. can raise their ugly head at any time.

I am enjoying the ride but always ready for the other shoe to drop, too much Pitt history to overcome to really believe the best will happen, maybe it already has, we will see.

Lady Panthers play lacrosse today against a not so strong SUNY Binghamton. We are a work in progress and it could easily take a few more years before we are competitive with the powerhouse ACC women’s teams. For instance, if OSU gets anywhere near .500 they will figure out a way to get them in. I already saw them rated about 20 spots higher than us in one of these bogus “computer” rankings even though they have a losing record.

They will argue that the B1G is way better than the ACC (poor TV ratings schools) even though we beat them head to head in the Challenge.

OT – Paris Johnson OSU (remember the outrage when he was recruited and his dad landed a 1 yr job with Pitt?)
          IOL – Peter Skoronski Northwestern
          OT – Broderick Jones Georgia

          DL – Bryan Bresee Clemson
(there is zero chance Jalen Carter will be available at 17)
They can wait until the 32nd pick and take any one of these guys – Ika Baylor, Tuipulotu USC and wait for it…. Calijah Kancey Pitt. Despite what some here are saying, he’s moving up a lot of boards.

I would wait on CB at 17 – there are a lot of good choices and one should be available at 32. Kelee Ringo Georgia, Witherspoon Illinois and Cam Smith from South Carolina… if any of them dropped, they’d be good gets and hard to pass up.

ILB – I’d wait until round three. Kinda thin there this year and I’d rather get a big palooka up front or a shutdown CB with the early picks. There are some interesting guys projected in round 3-5. Sirvocea would be a decent choice in the later rounds.

Really important that whoever they pick should be an impact guy in rookie year. With all of the QBs and EDGE guys with high rankings, a couple of those guys above could be available at 17, which is why I would drop down a few spots and pick up an extra pick.

Kancey, Baldonado and Dennis – won’t be surprised at all if 2 of them get regular playing time this fall.

Pitt did win 75-64. They have now won three out of their last four. But don’t take this to mean they have turned some corner. Pitt is still in the ACC cellar and the 3 teams they’ve beaten are just ahead of them in the standings. The combined ACC record of those 3 teams is 12 – 34.

My fear is that Heather will portray this as progress. While I don’t know any “inside basketball,” I’d have to say that this team is just too inconsistent and too up-and-down to be considered “well-coached.” And the recruiting speaks for itself – poor Liatu King, at 6-foot tall, has to go against a taller post player every game.

You can teach all the x’s and o’s that can help a team to win, but you need players to execute the plan. BC was a very weak team with one outstanding player….the supporting cast plays hard but lacks talent. Coach White seems like a decent person, but for some reason he is unable to attract players to play in the ACC, in a great venue at a school that offers an ABOVE average education….and oh yeah, the City of Pittsburgh has many positives to talk about. Narduzzi has figured out how to bring in mostly second tier guys with great potential, The portal has been Capel’s salvation, with a few solid freshmen, the soccer coach has brought in foreign players, the volleyball coaches reputation for winning has attracted great players. I don’t know details but wrestling and women’s soccer bringing in quality individuals. Different strokes for different folks, but the bottom line is results, you can’t win without enough competitive players.

And the last time Pitt had a sellout at the Pete was in February 2019 and that was also for a game against Syracuse. A sellout at the Pete is 12,508 and it sounds like we could see that once again next week. A win against VT on Saturday should make that game electric with resultant crowd noise heard throughout Oakland.

        1. I could maybe stretch it to half full. All you see on TV are the two sections behind the announcers. Let’s not forget that most students were in middle school the last time Pitt basketball was relevant. Fan momentum will take a little time.

The rest of the crowd was lighter than I expected but I attribute that to a late night weekday game against a ho-hum opponent. Keep winning and that too will change.

  31. Okay, I watched Coach White’s post-game yesterday and he gave a hint to his thinking on his 5-in-5-out strategy.

Against BC, his starting 5 played about 2.5 minutes and then the alternate 5 came in. He switches them in and out as units throughout the game. The “starters” started again in the second half but were pulled after 3 horrible possessions.

BTW, Pitt scored 75 points yesterday, way above their average, but the “bench” scored 51 of them.

In the postgame, Coach mentioned the defense of the first group. Pitt’s main scoring threats, Harris and King, come in off the bench.

So here’s the only thing that makes any sense to me — Coach is putting his better defensive players out first to try to undermine the confidence of the opponent in shooting the ball. You know how some players, if they miss their first shot can be affected – I’m thinking that’s what the goal may be. That is, to play super high-energy defense for a few minutes – then bring in your real starters…

Could be a crazy take on my part. Any other ideas?

    Go Pitt.

  35. Winning on the road is hard. Even against bad teams. Pitt shouldn’t lack motivation but VT -5 I kind of get.

  36. VT will be highly motivated at home to knock Pitt off the top of the ACC pedestal. I have faith in Capel and the maturity of our players to not take the Hokies lightly. This is exactly the kind of trap game that can catch a good team off guard. The Las Vegas line numbers being quoted tell you what the so-called “smart money” is thinking>>>I hope we prove them very wrong late this afternoon.

  37. Pitt baseball losing 2-1 in the 2nd inning – our new lefty starter has given up 2 HR’s after facing only ten batters.

    Ouch!

  38. Line up to 6 now in Vegas. Several of my degenerate gambling friends betting their mortgage on Pitt.
Remember, the line is set not to favor Tech but where the oddsmakers think the money will even out. This line s either incredibly arrogant or someone knows something. Fede hurt maybe? I hope Pitt blows Em out!!

  39. Pitt baseball getting hammered by Maine 9-2 through 5 innings.

Pitt’s #1 starter was rocked yesterday by Maine and Pitt hung on to win 11-10 after entering the 9th inning up 11-7.

Today, our #2 starter couldn’t get out of the 3rd inning against Maine.

Our HC was a former pitching coach.

  40. Once again UVA lucks out at the end. They just escaped a ND win when ND missed a shot at the end. They are saying UVA with 21 wins is a 3 seed. That stinks and time is running out for someone to beat them..

I’m hoping Capel & his coaches have the team ready to play.

All said it is a great day to help support Pitt and whichever area float$ your boat – from the Library fund, the Band & Cheerleaders/Dance/Roc, athletes in all programs including clubs, to General and Athletic scholarships, Academic schools and funds, and community & student organizations.

Lots of bonus challenge funds are available too – including for those who are former grads, athletes, or employees of Pitt.

    1. Meant to add the wife and I gave lots of small $25 donations and spread them out over several sports and groups, it’s great day to make those $5 to $50 contributions add up.

Yes, even $5 will make a difference to a deserving students. Make a Difference in a youth’s life today.

      1. Tommymac– Nice comments but you need to post on the Pitt- Virginia Tech game thread article. Probably no one else saw them.

Since, I wrote this article (Pitt-Boston College game thread), I get notified of any comment made. That’s how I saw your comments.

Michaelangelo has a new thread going up at either 6 or 6:30 for today’s game at 7.
