Are you Not Entertained

Editor’s Note: For those of you who are not aware, there is a free AI-powered tool that can do lots of things. It’s called Chat GPT. Since I am short on time, I asked it to write an article about the unexpected success of the University of Pittsburgh Basketball Team in the style of Gladiator. The result is below. A little short on details, but very long on rah-rah. Lets enjoy this moment folks, it’s been a long time coming.

In the world of basketball, there are those who rise to greatness, and those who fall to defeat. But in the arena of collegiate basketball, the University of Pittsburgh Panthers have proven themselves to be true gladiators, fighting their way to the top with unexpected success.

For years, the Panthers were thought to be just another average team (below average really), struggling to find their place in the competitive landscape of college basketball. But they were determined to prove their doubters wrong. The players trained harder, pushing their limits and honing their skills. They focused their minds, refusing to let any obstacle stand in their way.

And when the time came to take the court, the Panthers were ready. Despite a few early-season mishaps, they played with ferocity, their eyes blazing with the fire of true champions. And with each game, they grew stronger, their confidence rising as they took down one opponent after another.

The Panthers’ success was not just the result of their physical prowess, however. It was their unyielding spirit, their unwavering determination, that truly set them apart. No matter the score, no matter the odds, they fought on, always believing in themselves and their ability to triumph.

And triumph they did. Against all odds, the Panthers fought their way to the top, defeating even the toughest of opponents and earning the respect of fans, coaches and fellow players alike (with the exception of *ahem* Jim Boheim…) They are now known as one of the strongest and most feared teams in the ACC, a true force to be reckoned with.

The success of the University of Pittsburgh basketball team is a testament to the power of the human spirit. It shows what can be achieved when we dare to dream, when we dare to believe in ourselves, and when we dare to fight like gladiators. And as they take the court once more, the Panthers continue to inspire others to reach for the stars and follow their own path to greatness.

    1. When I read your intro, I immediately thought I should dust off my old idea of starting a blog called a ” Yinzer in the Semi-Rural South”.

Then I actually read the article and said nope. No charts. No data. Besides what does a computer know about statistics combined with over explanations and a poor writing style?

          1. I forgot about droppin’ the “G” in “ing”. I was bad at talkin’ that way. One of my English teachers at Sewickley Academy tried to break me of that habit.

I wonder if Chat GPT can take an Excel spreadsheet and make heads or tails out of it.

To tell the truth, I don’t remember much about Sewickley or Edgeworth. I think the area you are talking about is to the left off Beaver past the Edgeworth Country Club. Used to have to run from the gym to the Academy sports complex down Beaver about a mile. I sucked at baseball and still hate soccer.

You triggered many memories of the Academy. Still have mixed feelings about my youth there but have attended every 5’th year anniversary for the last 5 reunions.

Come to think of it there are quite a few above-average writers on the POV (Pitt education ?) who when challenged to contribute a story rise to the occasion with flying colors ..BLUE and GOLD!! H2P!

  5. Very timely piece. One thing that AI may never achieve is the emotion experienced by fans who attended the big games this year. The wins vs UNC, VA and Miami were why we attend sporting events. The most improbable comeback vs Miami gave us a feeling you cannot experience in almost any other way. Maybe the first time you realize a girlfriend feels the same way about you as you feel about her or when your first child is born. A little over the top, sure but you get the point.

For the first time in a long time I was proud to ask the bartender at an out of town sports bar to turn on the Pitt game. Others at the bar didn’t laugh.

No matter what happens this has been a great season, let’s hope these feelings continue. It is awesome to see all of us that questioned Capel’s future get behind him and this unexpected success. What a turnaround.

    1. We can (and should) get behind this success. It doesn’t absolve the past years under his leadership and shouldn’t anoint him as a great coach.

I hope he keeps this going! Finish strong, get to the dance, do well, ring it again next season.

    2. Capel has done a fantastic job this season but let’s not forget he has got a big job ahead of him post season to replace the production he will lose come seasons end. Add to that will the same closeness exit on the team next season. He’s seems to have a good starting point with the 3 bigs returning but can he replace the 3 point production to go along with the 3 bigs.

  7. That write up is so generic that, other than MM’s two inserts, it could be applied to any team with a better than .500 record. The only thing missing is the gratuitous reference to this team being a “family”, which apparently is now the case for every team in every sport, to the point of making the reader/listener nauseous. But maybe that is better than the old “going to war with my brothers” tripe.

  8. I have to get back to last night’s game. No need to rehash all the positives because the performance of our players was almost beyond belief. We all know that The Ville is a mess right now, but given the school’s history they will be back. There was one statistic that stood out (yeah, shooting % were spectacular), but the # of assists at a skyhigh 23 was something not often seen in a P5 game……23 assists. TEAM BASKETBALL.

Also, the development of our “bigs” is something to watch as we get into the money games of the season. It was fun to see the twins playing together and FF has obviously become a force for other teams to contend with. One more year of experience and weight and strength conditioning for our front court plus hopefully a healthy Hugley and NCAA Elite 8 here we come in 2024! Ah, we can dream of The Final 4!

Kinda like the ending of the movie Flight of The Phoenix.

I imagine there are more then one or two coaches out there who do not want to see players wearing a Pitt jersey sitting on the other bench in this years NCAA Big Dance.

This season has been so much fun to experience. Let’s put on another pot of coffee, get out the Jamison and enjoy watching this years stretch run, no matter the outcome. The journey alone has been worth every $ I’ve donated to Pitt this season.

  15. On the Pitt women’s volleyball arena, Onye Ofoegbu, the UC Irvine middle blocker that visited Pitt on the weekend of 1/28/2023 committed to the University of Oregon. Another swing and a miss for Pitt on recruiting a high caliber middle blocker for next season.

We continue to wait for Coach Fisher to name a female assistant coach as well. I, personally, am getting a little impatient with where we stand on both issues. I guess I just need to trust Coach Fisher has everything under control.

    Like

    1. I saw that too and have the same concerns. What is he waiting for? Maybe he will elevate Kamalani Akeo to Asst coach, but this is taking a long time and I am getting worried that we will be out in the cold next year. Of course there is the portal opening later on, but to me, by then what you get are the players who got recruited over or beat out of their position, instead of getting top players looking for a new home.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Maybe Cat Flood is being trained to be a middle although she is small for the position? Given our incoming freshman OHs, I do not think Cat will see much of the court other than as a serving specialist.

I agree with you on not having much to choose from later in the transfer portal cycle.

  16. Tough game Saturday at FSU IMO. I think this is actually a better Pitt BB today then when it lost to FSU at the Pete. From where I’m sitting I think the Bigs are playing much better than they did a couple of weeks back. Never the less any ACC road game is never easy and FSU should feel pretty good about beating us at the Pete going into the game.

    1. FSU has a couple of bigs who will be a big challenge for our skinny bigs, including the 7-4 guy…. Foul trouble is obviously a concern.

But the first game they shot 10 for 20 on 3- pointers – with most of them from the 6-5 guard Green. Maybe they don’t hit those “Pitt-like” numbers this time…

Girard was red hot for the Orange and Mintz had a terrific second half after being stymied early in the game. The Seminoles are very beatable and hopefully their shooting will stay in the refrigerator when we play on Saturday. Based on what I saw I would favor zone D against the Noles.

  21. Tossing, great find on the Sports Illustrated article on Heather Lyke! Thank you for posting. I absolutely enjoyed it. Should be mandatory reading for all Pitt fans!

Heather naysayers here have pooh poohed her accomplishments, noting that she did not hire Jay Vidovich for men’s soccer or Dan Fisher for volleyball. I maintain that retaining good coaches is as important and as difficult as hiring winning coaches in the first place. And the easiest part of that is paying a competitive or better salary. The hard part is fighting for the facilities, staff, and ancillary needs of those coaches before the Chancellor and Board of Directors. How much input do you think Coach Fisher is being given right now on the layout and technology requirements (video, conditioning, nutrition, etc.) for the new Victory Heights building for volleyball and other sports? It’s providing the time and attention of her staff to roll out the red carpet for every recruit and their family brought on a visit by those coaches.

I sure hope that we can keep Heather for a long, long time. These are some of the best days to be a Panther fan.

Hail to Heather! Hail to Pitt!

  23. OOOF The news of Paul Martha’s passing hits me in the gut,,,,I am Class of 1963 and he was our hero. Pitt had a 9-1 season and did not go to a bowl because TV money did not rule and the 297 bowls that now exist did not come until decades later. The one loss was to a great Navy team led by Roger Staubach.

Martha was (how do I describe him?) a true gamer. He was a star on and off the field and became a very successful attorney and businessman. A Pitt man who will always be remembered very fondly by me and the VERY LARGE number of alumni who had the opportunity to see him play. RIP

Like isnore, I thought they’d lose by 20 tonight, but the women ended up giving ND a game. Pitt even led briefly early in the 4th quarter. Unfortunately ND scored at least 10 points in the final quarter on easy, open layups when they drove and dished to their bigs…

My brother-in-law who also is a Pitt grad frequented Conley Resort’s Bar on Route 8. He became friends with 2 guys who also frequented the bar. He found out that one guy was Paul Martha and the other was his driver/ caretaker. I hope I’m not miss-speaking but my brother-in-law thinks Paul suffered from dementia. He said that his driver always answered for him and Paul was unresponsive.

I use to work for U S Steel (when it was U S Steel) and I told my brother-in-law to ask Paul that you heard that he married Edwin Gott’s (former U S Steel Chairman) daughter.

Isnore, it got the first meaningful reaction, eye contact and conversation with Paul. This bar friendship went on for many years. RIP John Paul Martha.

As many know here, Im a longtime season tickholder for UR Spider BB. Seen a lot of great games… dramatic wins in the last mnte over teams like VCU, Dayton and so on. A couple weeks back, we had a rather amazing comeback from a 22 point deficit against my other alma mater, Duquesne. Pretty exciting stuff…the A-10 feels like big-time BB.

BUT… I was at that Pitt-Miami win a couple weeks ago and the environment was simply another level. I’ve only been to the Pete a few times before and nothing matched what I experienced that Saturday afternoon. I can only imagine what it was once like – and can be again – when/if Pitt gets fully established as an ACC power. To borrow from Hugh Grant – it was like basketball heroin. My Mrs. and I discussed the possibility of getting a mini-package when I hang up my chaps and spurs. It was that exciting.

It reasonable to expect Pitt will finish the season strong and shall make a respectable showing in the ACC tourney and the NCAA dance. They will likely bow out at some point, but boy… what a hockey stick-like turn in the program. Enjoy the moment folks!

And don’t let us down today, Panthers!

  45. It is funny how much is riding on the outcome of today’s game. With all of the solid wins against good teams, because of the sluggish start and the previous loss to today’s opponent, a loss would really hurt Pitt’s chances of making the dance.

It will be interesting to see how their fans show up for a noon game in Tallahassee with the sunshine beckoning and hangovers echoing.

The last game was shocking and you had to be there to witness how hot FLST was and how absolutely cold Pitt was. They couldn’t miss and we couldn’t get anything to drop. It really was an anomaly in Pitt’s climb to respectability.

Let’s hope that Pitt’s experience keeps our guys from jumping out of their skins today and they play the kind of game we know they can. FLST record notwithstanding is a bad matchup for Pitt because they have multiple big guys and guards that can shoot.

It sure is great to be playing consequential basketball this late in February.

  46. I was going to post that a key today is for Federicko to stay out of foul trouble against the FSU bigs, but I don’t want to jinx Federicko, so I’m not going to post that…. 👍

    Go Pitt.
