Bring home a winner guys. Every time I turn on a game Pitt is winning- then they quickly start slumping and their opponent starts catching up. I must be a jinx so I turn it off and just check back every once in a while. Vs Louisville Pitt was up by 10 then ‘ville knocked it down to 6 or 4- I turned it off and Pitt came back big. This happened during 2 other games too. I’ll take one for the team and just check in every now and then. H2P!
Other than Burton…FSU is more athletic than Pitt, busting our Man to Man D.
Capel needs to SWITCH Defenses more, especially against a young in-experienced team
like FSU.
That crosscourt pass of his was horrendous and they got a 3 pointer from that.
Why he picked up his dribble, also a factor….plus where were Pitt’s Guards ???
We got what amounts to at least 3 guards on the floor and Hinson is bringing the ball up court.
For better or for worse, Capel is the kind of coach who doesn’t make moves during a game. He lets his team try to play through and out of slumps. But when you do that sometimes the hole is just too deep!
Live by the 3, as in the last game, die by the 3….as in today.
Shot 41% from 3 against L-ville…..so far 16% from 3…today.
Cummings & Sibande & Hinson a combined 2 for 16 FG’s.
1) I don’t understand why Capel refuses to call TOs. Calling one early in the game when FSU started that run could have gone a long way.
2) Cummings misses too many easy shots and is taking too many 3s, particularly early in the shot clock.
3) Too much 1 v 1. Run the offense and move the ball quickly. When they do that, guys get shots in rhythm and the opponent starts making defensive errors.
4) FSU is extending their D so far out and I honestly don’t think I’ve seen a Pitt player make a single backdoor cut!!
They’ve shown that they come back from deficits, but it’s going to require some better game management and guys hitting shots. This would be a bad loss.
P. S. If I hear that Pizza Hut commercial one more time I’m going to break something!
I don’t agree, Hinson got us back in the game with a barrage of threes, when everyone else was cold as ice. Burton’s twos could not keep up with the 3’s.
Absolutely. They only play one way…..what’s hysterical they only use 1 ball screen, when trying to get Burton some room. Even FSU with Hamilton uses multiple ball screens and I don’t consider Leonard Hamilton anywhere near a great coach. Capel & his clown staff is terrible.
Nelly Cummings should NEVER be taking 12 shots. He’s your worst 3 point shooter but he took eight 3’s. Come on, he went to Colgate for a reason.
Cause he’s not that good. And against athletes like FSU it comes forth.
It really wouldn’t matter that much(i use to think it would), would Dior be any better or that much better than Burton off the dribble or in finishing at the rim. You’d have to move Burton to the 2…and he’s a better mid-range, or finisher than 3 point shooter. Even with Dior right now, Pitt has no inside game to speak of, other than Burton going to the hoop.
And we have no idea if Dior is a 3 point shooter, I’m thinkin not (as of now). it would just give us another body, at the Guard spot…which would be up to 5 Guards.
Needless to say, ultra disappointed. FSU’s BPi was a low 150, below such hoop powerhouses as Longwood, UNC-Greensboro, Purdue-Fort Wayne, Akron, Utah Valley, Southern Utah (?), U-Mass-Lowell. And another couple dozen basketball unknowns. This was just a terrible loss….even worse at Home.
Predict Joe Lunardi has dropped Pitt from his predictions.
The crowd was a little disappointing, about the same as Clemson with a larger Zoo.
Look FLST shot lights out 50% from the three point line to our 27%. We missed too many open shots and they didn’t. They also made some great mid range jumpers. They are a young team that is getting better and we may have reached our peak, let’s hope not. We also had too many unforced errors, bad passes and Elliott’s bad foul on that last three point shot was the dagger.
Cummings and Sibande did not have good games. FLST played pretty good defense and ours was sporadic. FLST was too tall and athletic for Cummings. They in no way looked as bad as their record.
haha…..it’s just hard to believe with 4 HC’s(one current & 3 former) on the bench, and so many experienced Pitt players (the announcers say it over and over and show the graphs on how experienced Pitt is) that Pitt plays no defense other than a Man to Man. You have a red hot team(with better athletes)….and you just try to break their rhythm by tossing a Zone at them…see how they react. Could turn the game….but if you don’t even try. Pitt finally presses with 26 seconds in the game……why not earlier, again it can throw FSU off their rhythm, maybe you get a turnover and an easy basket. FSU was pressing us nearly the whole game. They did get some easy baskets out it. Additionally their press took seconds off of Pitt’s shot clock offensively and made Burton work harder. They say teams that press don’t like to be pressed themselves. Has Capel EVER HEARD OF THAT !!! It’s just incredulous watching him coach or better…non-coach.
Capel is who he is as a coach. Same at Oklahoma. Never a mid game adjustment. Never a time out to stem runs. One motion offense with no set plays. Let’s his team work their way out of trouble. Didn’t work today.
Cummings can’t be the PG….because the ball has to be in Burton’s hands, as the offense runs thru him. Burton is basically the only player we have who can consistently take it to the rim. (Sibande on occasion too, but he settles too much on jump shots) So Burton is really the PG. Cummings is in the 2G role. However he’s not a real good shooter(below 40% after tonite), especially from 3 (30% & dropping), since at only 6’0″ kinda short for a 2 Guard. So they are in a pickle, since they have no inside threats. Hinson has no inside game, cause he can’t elevate. Freddy is a work in progress. Burton is the INSIDE Game.
Our three guards Cummins, Elliot and Nike were 3-14 from 3 point land yesterday. Santos played 5 minutes and never took a shot. One change for the future is get him minutes and shots – with his height he can at least launch his threes differently than the smaller guards.
Who wins consistently with players that are not consistently better than the other guy’s? So every win is an upset for the coach that wins with less talented players than the other guy? Not sure how some see this as purely a coaching loss. This was an all around crap show. My take on why we lost: Our coaches did nothing to stop simple pick and roll plays that resulted in at least 10 easy points for FSU. Two of our guys that are shooting 40% for the year (including todays numbers) shot 17% today. One of their guys played out of his mind.
Is it the coaches that didn’t stop the pick and rolls or is it the inexperience of our big men?
Those plays did hurt. Especially near the end of the game.
Two plays that really hurt at the end were the non call when Hinson was pushed out of bounds that preceded Elliott fouling on the three point shot that had zero chance of going in.
I didn’t get a chance to watch the entire game but saw the last four minutes. With a little over three minutes left, we were trailing by 5 and somebody hit a 3 pointer and we began rushing around trying to call a timeout, which we did. I am not sure why capel did that as we just hit a big shot, were within one possession and the crowd was going crazy.
I wasn’t there so I am not sure if he called timeout to make a defensive substitution, or whether he lost track of time place and circumstance, thinking we needed to stop the clock to set-up pressure. Just not sure as I wasn’t in flow of game. Would be interested in thoughts from the brain trust.
The short answer was that time outs were poorly used throughout the game by Pitt coaching. That is a common theme for Capel’s run of years at Pitt.
At one point in the first half Pitt was blowing a good size lead to start the game and a time out was desperately needed to change the momentum of the game and my screams were ignored (ikr).
At the end of the game, a time out was called by Pitt that killed our “good” momentum. That would have been a great post-game question for a reporter to ask our HC.
It’s good basketball IQ (to know when and when not to call a time out) and we have a HC with 3 assistants who were former HC’s. Emphasize “former”.
The missing Hugely Ingredient—simply put the real lack of any offensive threat from the Pitt center position allows any opposition to concentrate on defending the 3 point line and force Pitt to beat them on the inside. And right now Pitt can’t count on any decent production from the center position. FSU was very athletic and was able most times to keep in front of our 3 point shooters to force some difficult shots.
This is not brain surgery! When a team is overplaying our guards, bring your big man to the foul line and lob the ball to him. That immediately breaks down the half court press coverage. Run your offense thru the high post. There ….done!
They do that now….when the Big comes out to set a ball screen….sometimes
they throw the ball to the Big….who then generally hands the ball back off to a Guard.
And then the Big tries to set another ball screen. It’s all an attempt, as you know, to
get a mismatch for Burton and/or to get him a rub off the screen.
I only watched the first half and a few minutes of the 2nd but saw a ton of missed open shots and long athletic FSU kids making our generally below average passing more difficult
way to much reliance on iso play after the first several minutes of playing fast in transition and creating offense there but then once FSU hit a few and we MISSED some good open shots, they continued to feed the best player on the court and we had no one able to step up
I wrote it upthread that Nellie needs to narrow what he does while remaining an occasional threat to shoot outside and Hinson needs to just spread the court by positioning and then crash to add rebound help
how exactly you defend a pro like Green and do better at defending overall, I’ll leave to all the coach critics here to explain
and yes, Capel needed to call a TO during that run early but at what point, not sure but yes
Our big men are very inexperienced and will get better but that just does not happen easily.
This may sound a bit stupid but, there is a shot that has been missing in basketball for a number of years….the once all-important hook shot. Gonzaga had a center who was a good hook shooter…very difficult to defend without fouling. Growing up in NY almost every guard
was able to control the dribble and drive to the basket…..today we see missed shots because of poor ball handling. The young kids all want to be Steph Curry and make shots from left field…Green at Fla State can shoot, but how many Green’s are there?
Taking shots from the corners is not easy because the backboard is not your friend…a good corner shooter is worth gold because it is easier to spring him open…but he has to make the shot… Have you noticed how many of our shots from a corner hit the front of the rim instead of missing in the middle? Bill Bradley from Princeton and the Knicks made a career out of scoring from corners (yeah, he was also a 90% foul shooter). I bring up these points because many of today’s players lack the basic skills that make a decent player into a very good player.
The Wake and Miami games will determine our season…stay tuned,
Someone lauded Jamie’s win over Kansas yesterday but he lost to WV the game before.
In today’s basketball it is hard to overcome the 3 point buzzsaw. Especially when your hotshots are cold as ice. Pitt had two nice runs to start both halves but could not sustain them.
Could Capel make a difference, maybe but FLST along with making shots played strong defense for much of the game while Pitt did less so. Add to that the number of unforced errors, passing was not sharp and you end up with a loss.
I go back to Cummings and Sibande who had extremely poor afternoons. Pitt just won’t win when that happens.
None of Pitt’s players appeared tired at the end at all. These young guys, like I could back then, can play all day. Plus with all the more additional TV timeouts and what not, that is generally not a factor at all in today’s game. FSU played mostly 8 players( 5 minutes plus).
Pitt played 8 players (5 minutes plus). Their bench just scored more, since Sibande played limited minutes.
The fact Sibande only played 14 minutes was perplexing, considering their height on the wings(FSU Guard/Wings were 6’7″, 6’5″, 6’5 & 6’6″)
which created matchup problems for Cummings/Elliot…..and the fact Cummings/Elliot were somewhat over-matched, that Sibande at 6’4″ was a better matchup, just size wise. Sibande is also, other than Burton, the only player Pitt has who can take a defender off the dribble and to the rack. Elliott is purely a mostly catch & shoot, shooter and Cummings
is not a good outside shooter(30%) or for that matter good shooter period (39%).
So did any of these ACE journalists ask why Nike only played 14 minutes, when Cummings was struggling and Elliott as well to a lesser degree with FSU’s Guard/Wing length ??
They better get to work quick on those new schemes, as the next 3 games are gonna be brutal.
Wake Forest is good, they just beat FSU by 15 points, handed Clemson their first loss in the ACC by 10 points & also beat Duke by 11. They have pretty good sized Wing players and 3 big Bigs (6’10”, 7’1″ & 6’10”) , who all hit the boards pretty well. Plus they have a real PG.
Miami is next up and they always give Pitt trouble. Miami has won 9 of the last 11 against
Pitt, including a 21 point beatdown last year. Complete opposite of Wake, Miami plays with 4 Guards, no Center.
And then UNC, down there….who is gonna be looking for some payback. Additionally the Tarholes are 10-0 at home. Some Southern Cooking…..if you will 🙂
Mr Capel’s 4 Loser…could you please post using your real Word Press name. I have no major problems with what you are saying, however, I really detest people who hide out in the witness protection program on a simple sports thread. STOP HIDING!!!!!!
“Ever since the win at Syracuse in which he hit six of 11 three-point attempts; Cummings has made just six of his 33 three-point attempts (18%). When Cummings is shooting the ball well, the offense feels complete. If Pitt wants to bounce back from this loss, it will certainly want Cummings’ cold streak to come to an end.”
Yes….bench him for Nike and let Burton play PG. Bring Cummings in late for FT’s. He nothing more than a bench player.
Please note my entry at 8:55AM. I do not claim to come remotely close the basketball knowledge of Dan, however, I do know that we both favor solid basics in basketball skills from coaches and players. The hook shot is NOT EASY to master, however, it is lost in the land of everybody looking for 3 pointers. Guillermo is 6ft 11″ and weighs 2 lbs, so it is difficult for him despite his height to muscle the tall elephants under or near the basket. The player who can effectively use the hook shot may miss on his attempt, but in order to stop a hook shot artist it is common to draw a foul. So, if you want to get the opposition in foul trouble and hopefully score points it is a way of changing a game and can drive opponents KRAZEE.
Our Canary Island brothers…long arms and no muscle should be learning how to use this lost
art…but, who is going to be able to teach them the proper technique…and it requires lots of practice…but, oh boy can it be a killer!
Pitt has four ex head coaches sitting on the bench. Any one of them could teach a hook shot. Unfortunately Capel Brothers seem to be running the show.
The rest seem to be silent advisors.
Most important in teaching the hook shot is that you want your. Shooter finishing with weight toward the basket. So easy to fade away when taking that shot putting the player out of rebounding position.
I fear the Pitt ladies may have checked out, or just slammed into a wall of frustration. I mean today they made 12 field goals and missed 64 shots the field. 64! Good gracious!
Three starters did not make a bucket.
I feel bad for Coach White, but he put these ingredients together.
Leo Durocher the tough baseball manager said, “Nice guys finish last”. Coach White as far as I know is a “nice guy”. Heather may have to find a coach who is not so “Nice”. WBB is at a low point for Pitt athletics.
I am a bit confused on the hook shot. Are we talking Lew Alcindor’s hook shot which took years to perfect, or are we talking about the jump hook. The jump hook is more teachable with these athletes. There is much more flexibility in movement with the jump hook.
Many have commented on Nike’s poor game offensively. I would kindly submit that his poor game offensively was a direct result of his lackluster defense. After re-watching, he was very average on the defense with limited energy. When players (and there were several) disappear from a game, they need to come out. How did our coaches miss the players energy. All of our player’s are not good enough to play the entire game with limited energy.
Coaches like Capel who want their players on the floor to work their way out of trouble. Refuse to call time outs, make adjustments only at halftime and do not micromanage the game. They believe that will help the team come tourney time. No set plays ever!!
Then there is the coach who will call TO at first time of trouble, switch defenses on a dime and open every game with set plays and use those set plays to augment his motion offense. This was my style when I coached! And that was HS not college. Sometimes it worked and sometimes not.
The other coach uses a combination of the above. Think Dixon.
All in all, no matter what style is used, the best team usually wins! FLA State was much the best team yesterday !
Don’t disagree with the type of coaches. For coach style number one mentioned above, the coach needs to understand his players as well as the time place and circumstance of the game. If that coach leaves it up to his players to figure it out and they fail to work things out successfully each time, the coach would be the problem because he doesn’t understand his team. I don’t think the Pitt team as currently constructed has played their way through and garnered the trust of the coach.
I really didn’t understand his timeout after we hit a big three to pull within two points with about 3:20 left in the game. Killed our momentum, the crowd and allowed fsu to re-group. Candidly, I think he lost track of time place and circumstance and panicked just a bit.
I was hoping our women had a chance for a big comeback today, but they got waxed, actually doubled them up. Uggh!
Moving forward Cummings needs to be smarter when it is not going well, he needs to distribute the ball and take fewer shots when they are not going in. He should have enough experience to know these things. Coach also should have recognized this and played Sibande more since he is taller and a better defender, even though he was having an off night as well.
It is too bad that FLST got hot on Saturday, they probably won’t get that hot again this year.
It makes things a lot tougher for Pitt. If they have any chance to get to the dance they need to play them one at a time and figure out how to stop those long droughts in offense that keep happening along with the lapses in defense. Coach needs to help with time outs and they need to keep working for better shots. I do agree that a little bit of zone or full court defense could be used to stop the momentum.
Maybe a coincidence but since Fede didn’t get the customary 2 fouls in the first half he played more and Graham played less. The bench needs to be used more for physical and mental preparedness. Too many open shots tells me our guys were not getting there in time. The last bad foul by Elliott was because he got there late.
It’s one game in a long seasons folks! We lose the next two or win the next two and our prospects will change dramatically. Every team now has a ton of tape on Pitt and Capel. Open shots for Burton, Cummings, Hinson and Elliot are over! Get used to it.
Dan, they had plenty of open shots on Saturday, they just didn’t make many of them and only Burton made the contested shots. I do agree that anything is possible but it is going to get tougher.
You can pick on any coaches in – game actions (or none) and say he got out-coached when the team loses. Even when he wins he seems out coached be cause of his lack of adjustments …..ever.
Defensive specialist, Logan Mosley, is the new commit for Pitt’s volleyball team. Logan is coming to us from Virginia Tech who was 4-14 in ACC play last season.
Call me less than impressed not with Logan but with the fact we desperately need a middle blocker and Logan is not one! Petrone better get his butt in gear on this small detail. Hopefully something is going on behind the scenes otherwise why waste a spot on the team for another defensive specialist? We already have two.
John, We do need 3 defensive specialists- 1 libero, a DS, and an extra to sub if one of the other 2 is not playing well. However, I agree that MB is a priority. Perhaps we whiffed on getting one of the top ones out of the portal, or maybe hoping to grab one after spring ball. We have had great success elevating good players from mediocre programs. Hopefully, we’ll have success soon.
One loss in the 2024 Women’s Volleyball commitment list is Orian Drore, a libero who trained with the USA national team late last year is no longer committed to Pitt as of Jan. 5, 2023. We have another libero in the class so that is not a problem, but Drore was the better of the two. As of today, Drore is not committed to any college. Only speculation, but this could be due to one of Pitt’s assistants leaving to be the head coach at Oregon State.
Not very interesting news: Another space filler of a piece from PSN….player X names Pitt in the Top 10….so what? Slow news day. Top 10, Top 8, Top 4. Top 375?
Hi guys. I’ve been reading/writing on the POV for years and I recently started my own twitter profile where I am showing off very strange pieces of sports memorabilia I’ve collected over the years. Many of them are Pitt related. Today I have a game worn Ryan Luther jersey displayed. I am not trying to sell anyone anything, just wanting to share my collection with the world and think many of you may enjoy seeing it.
I would be honored if you follow me @pittpanther44.
I’ve often thought about passing when I see Pitt “running” a fast break this year. Too many times the ball handler has trailers and takes it to the hoop to miss or be blocked or charge. I don’t think I’ve seen a pass to a trailer yet this year. This could be a difference in tight games.
I don’t have a twitter account, but I read Chris Peak and Chris Dokish every day on my phone.
\Just Google or Bing or whatever search engine you use “Twitter @pittpanther44”. Just looked at his account. First twit I saw was a Bubby Brister Minnesota Viking jersey. Second was the Ryan Luther jersey.
Just saw on Pitt official GameDay website for tomorrow’s game and celebration of Jerome Lane breaking the glass backboard dunk.
The site said it was a “2 handed tomahawk dunk”..who writes this crap?
Who fact checks it?
I was there with Scooter and will never forget that moment.
the delicate balance between being the HEAD coach and making them great(or at least as good as they can be) at basketball versus hanging out and talking with them about “life” might just be Capel’s big shortcoming and undoing
…..and on any given night…..with about 2 minutes left in the game Green has 5 points!
I would never have guessed that the player I saw demolish Pitt would have such an off night.
Miami was energized and hustling on D. The canes were contesting the threes all game.
Someone said during the Pitt vs FL State game that our guys were reading their press clippings – there was a lack of energy by our Panthers in that game and the coaches missed opportunities to change the momentum with time outs and mixing up schemes.
Obviously much of that is true. Miami had to play great D to get that result, but three for 22 is awful shooting.
At our game I saw no lack of energy just many missed shots, and red hot shooting by FLST.
Maybe some time outs and changes in strategy might have helped, but the poor games by Cummings and Sibande would have been hard to overcome no matter what.
The three point shot has dramatically changed basketball, it is the main reason that Pitt is more competitive this year, but when they are not dropping…
With so many bodies at defensive tackle, I wonder if we seed Dorien Ford move to guard? The three super seniors plus Jules, Donald and Fitszimmons would mean little to no snaps for Ford.
Not that everyone thinks that Mel Kiper is all that but he just put out his top list of NFL prospects and has Calijah Kancey as his number 2 defensive tackle and rated number 11 overall.
Apparently he reviewed his 2022 tape and was very impressed. Says he is a tick below Aaron Donald.
Always nice to see our Pitt guys getting some good recognition and press.
His on-air persona aside, his analyses are better than most (imo).
That is the highest Ive seen Kancey so far… will be interesting to see how that develops over the next few months.
I am seriously confused by this story. Why was he cancelled and not the rap artist thar wrote the lyrics? I don’t understand the double standard. When my son was a teen I heard many teens of all races rapping along with music that had horrible language in it and contained the word in question. So they all should be cancelled for being fans of and supporting this genre of music?
I’m 72 years old. If you don’t guard me, I can still make 5 out of 10 from the three point arc! Pitt was very lazy getting out on the FL St long range shooters. If a guy makes an. NBA Three, you still have to get out and guard him next time down the floor!
You old guys remember Dick DeVenzio from Ambridge? He’d take one step over the half court line and swish a shot. And he’d do it again and again if you didn’t get out and guard him.
Pitt seemed to think Greens NBA threes were a fluke and left him open all game.
My high school football coach always drilled our safety’s “don’t ever think the opposing QB can’t throw if that far!”
Dan, I believe you could make 5 out of 10 three pointers if going against the Pitt D that we see sometimes. The question for you is whether they would be the two handed set shot variety, or the granny shot? I do believe you my friend.
No joke, I actually learned the granny foul shot from my dad who played at UC and also from one of my summer league coaches who played at Baldwin, then, Clemson, then ABA(?). Anyway, he was coached by Press Maravich while at Baldwin. Bill Warren was his name and he did have a running hook shot. So many lessons learned.
Wake runs a fast paced offense which is a disaster for a team like Pitt that seems to take time off from playing defense. Capel MUST switch defenses and stop trying to play man to man all game. Upsetting Wake’s rhythm with the fuul court press should be used and how about calling time outs AT THE RIGHT TIME. Pitt went on a run against the Seminoles and Capel called a TO and broke up our momentum ….WHY ???
Here early watching warm ups

It really wouldn’t matter that much(i use to think it would), would Dior be any better or that much better than Burton off the dribble or in finishing at the rim. You’d have to move Burton to the 2…and he’s a better mid-range, or finisher than 3 point shooter. Even with Dior right now, Pitt has no inside game to speak of, other than Burton going to the hoop.
And we have no idea if Dior is a 3 point shooter, I’m thinkin not (as of now). it would just give us another body, at the Guard spot…which would be up to 5 Guards.

LikeLike

FSU was very athletic and was able most times to keep in front of our 3 point shooters to force some difficult shots.

get a mismatch for Burton and/or to get him a rub off the screen.

LikeLike

They need to read the POV to get the good questions.
Pitt sits in a 6 way tie for 3rd place with their next 2 opponents. Clemson is in 1st with 1 loss and UVA is in 2nd with 2 losses.
If Capel and his 3 HC’s can make the necessary adjustments, we could stay in 3rd place or if Clemson and UVA stumble we are sitting in a prime spot.
I say the bench needs more minutes and we need one or 2 different schemes on offense and defense when the obvious is not working.
H2P!

Most important in teaching the hook shot is that you want your. Shooter finishing with weight toward the basket. So easy to fade away when taking that shot putting the player out of rebounding position.

So your saying we have a chance Dan!

Huff, there are three kinds of coaches;

Pitt will not beat Wake. Horrible matchup for Pitt. Wake guards completely overmatch Pitt’s guards. I say Wake by 8.

Thanks,
AJ

I’ve often thought about passing when I see Pitt “running” a fast break this year. Too many times the ball handler has trailers and takes it to the hoop to miss or be blocked or charge. I don’t think I’ve seen a pass to a trailer yet this year. This could be a difference in tight games.

LikeLike

H2P!

Pitt in a world of hurt tonight vs Wake Forest.
