Who Didn’t Rank Pitt

PSN posted a nice little article about James Franklin this morning. I figured I’d give you all a chance to riff on that.

Here is the final ballot all coaches, courtesy of Reddit CFB https://twitter.com/RedditCFB:

Here’s my take on coaches not ranking Pitt:

  • Dave Doeren – NC State – “Why would I want an ACC team with a better record than mine to be ranked?”
  • Lance Leopold – Kansas – “I used to live in Buffalo, no way I’m ranking those guys”
  • Sonny Dykes – TCU – “<drains whisky glass> Ugh. First Georgia now this damn survey? Hey intern…get your butt over here.”
  • Mel Tucker – Michigan State “Should they be ranked? Not until they beat us in a bare-knuckled tunnel brawl.”
  • Pat Fitzgerald – Northwestern “Beat Narduzzi in the Pinstripe Bowl. Pass.”
  • James Franklin – “Other then me being a pus-filled sack of dog excrement, I think I’m a pretty solid human being”
  • Kyle Wittingham – Utah “Pitt let Kedon Slovis go to BYU…So the friend of my enemy is my… enemy?”
  • Nick Saban – Alabama “He comes from my coaching tree, Terminator 1 must destroy all other Terminators”
  • Stan Drayton – Temple <Looking through old recruiting files> “Wait… Kenny Pickett was committed to Temple?”
  • Willie Fritz – Tulane “Down here in the Big Easy we don’t care much for y’all northern folk”
  • Mike MacIntyre – FIU “HEY CHARLIE PARTRIDGE STOP STEALING MY THREE STARS”
  • Sonny Cumbie – Louisiana Tech – See Willie Fritz, Tulane
  • Dana Dimel – UTEP – “I mean yeah, they came down here and won the Sun Bowl. But heck I couldn’t even get the basketball coach to flip any of their walk-ons.”
  • Chuck Martin – Miami (OH) – “Coaches Ballot? Oh I haven’t touched that all year”
  • Tim Albin – Ohio “All Ohio MAC Schools stand in solidarity against Pitt”
  • Troy Calhoun – Air Force “Well in fairness, I didn’t put UCLA in either”
  • Danny Gonzales – New Mexico “Pitt? Who is this Pitt?”
  • Brady Hoke – San Diego State – “Further study will reveal there are exactly four teams from the eastern time zone in my top 25. Surfs Up!”
  • Jamey Chadwell – Coastal Carolina (now HC at Liberty): <Checks notes> “Hmm Jordan Bass, Virginia HS POY, committed to Pitt. <check notes again> Hmmm Liberty University, Lynchburg Virginia… Ummm Nope.”

  1. Honestly it’s a bit like the AP polls. We complain at the beginning of the year that Pitt is not ranked, Pitt is not inside the top 20, 15…And somehow Pitt ends the year with 7 wins. 8 wins, etc. They just know Pitt. The best thing Pitt can do is put their head down, keep grinding and keep winning. The fact that they are in the company they are with back to back rankings and wins is phenomenal in its own right. Build on it! I might be more excited by the 2023 potential with the transfer portal players and returning players they have.

    Consistency.

    H2P!

  6. If you closely study the selections of the coaches, the biases are apparent.

But quite simply, Pitt beat UCLA in a bowl game where we were missing 8-10 starters. Both teams finished 9-4. I saw more than a few Coaches who ranked UCLA higher than Pitt. It nonsensical.

The Biggest Losers in this are Nick Saban and Dave Doeren. Both have UCLA ranked 19, but have Pitt unranked. Silly.

  7. Regarding the Duke basketball game, I thought the officials did affect the outcome. Not because they were biased. But because they called the game so tightly. When we get into a contest of benches with a Duke, we are in trouble. While they don’t have a Zion, they are deep.

When we beat UNC a couple of weeks ago, only Hinson ended up with 4 fouls. And he picked up the last two in the final two and a half minutes. Same with UNC. R.J.Davis picked up his 4th with 28 seconds to go in the game. No one else in foul trouble for either team.

Contrast that to the game last night. Late in the first half, fouls were assessed to Graham, Cummings, and Burton in a span of 40 seconds. Graham eventually fouled out and Federiko, Burton, and Cummings all played with 4 fouls. I maintain that a player with 4 fouls is almost worthless. He plays matador defense and doesn’t dare drive to the basket. Add that to a long stretch of cold shooting and we are toast.

Yet, as MajorMajors noted, we had one of our best three point shooters taking an open three with 21 seconds to go with a chance to cut it to a 1 point game in front of the Cameron Crazies.

I don’t like losses but I enjoy competitive games. Congrats to Coach Capel on putting together a pretty good team.

    1. Me and MrsBigB watched most of the game….it was extremely interesting in the 1st half when PITT surged to the big lead in spite of some bad turnovers and a couple of really, really stupid penalities…2nd half I watched Duke get multiple shots at the basket, at one time they got off 4 or maybe 5 shots in one possession…the ball bounced their way and they controlled the “O” board. PITT doesn’t seem to follow their shots…quite a few times I would witness an errant long 2 or 3 point attempt and only see one PITT player under the bucket while the other defenders were moving back on D. Anyway, Duke seemed to crash the “O” board getting multiple chances to score and kept chipping away at our big lead…Duke also got tougher on the D side in the 2nd half shutting the outside game down.

I highly recommend putting a BB game at Cameron Indoor Stadium on your bucket list…a great experience and a very tough place to win…thought we had’em last night!!!

      1. Footnote: JeanieB played basketball in nursing school and averaged nearly 30 pts a game (her older brother who was our HS’s all-time leading scorer would take to the play-ground BB couts near her home when she was a very young girl)- I watched her score 35 in a game against their hated rival….She knows old school BB…. she becomes very animated and vocal watching today’s style/game-kinda like having Annie and Scooter all rolled up into one…She couldn’t stomach the Panthers2nd half play, got pissed and retired for the evening. Maybe that’s the reason I don’t watch a lot of b-ball..hmmmm. Good to seeing everyone having more fun…seem to be getting more posts at least for the Duke game…winning and being competitive against quality opponents will do that…..

I just hate BAD refereeingand that was an easy one to see

last night wasn’t all bad and maybe relatively balanced but good point about Duke having better quality after needing to sit one then another and the 4 foul point is where the issue begins especially if early

  8. Lack of respect for Pitt football is a longstanding tradition. Even back to the 1963 team that got snubbed at 9-1 by the major bowls. In 76, who believes that Pitt would have even sniffed a #1 ranking if Michigan had not lost a game in November.?

The remedy is winning so that there are no excuses.

    1. I remember that both Michigan & USC were whining that the winner of their Rose Bowl game should have been the NC. Fact is Pitt dominated Georgia so bad that they had to give it to us. I think Georgia only crossed the 50 yard line once the whole game for their FG.

I still remember the cover of Sports Illustrated. Pitt is It!

  9. You are 100% right. The 2022 season should have been the year that Pitt reached for the stars. Losing to GTech and Louisville completely destroyed us in the minds of many. Pitt seems to find ways to blow winnable games and self-inflict serious wounds. We are not a team that will go 12-0 or 11-1, but 10-2 is more than enough with a decent schedule to rank us in the top 10. Win Baby Win!

  11. I think that Pitt players not following their shots is by design. The opponent’s front court is too big and there would be many on the back fouls when the other team blocks out. As Farmers mentioned, Pitt doesn’t have the bench to compete when the starters foul out. Our only big inside gets manhandled by other teams’ centers.

A team like Pitt must get more defensive boards and score a bit on transition. So 24 offensive rebounds by Duke was a total killer. When an opponent scores the resulting end line inbounds takes away the transition opportunity and forces Pitt into a half court game that is often limited to just one shot. These problems are mostly caused by Pitt having no front court presence.

  12. Regarding Franklin, it’s most unfortunate, but it’s looking like the expansion to more playoff teams, combined with his excellent recruiting, is going to position his team well going forward.

Franklin is a total jerk who would sell his soul for a win against Akron. He’s so paranoid that he thinks any good thing for Pitt will cost him a single 3* HS recruit who will languish on his bench for 5 years.

Also if head-to-head isn’t the best measuring stick for the better team (therefore the higher ranked team) than why the heck is it ALWAYS the very first tie-breaker in playoff rankings.

It’s a total joke and indication of the stupidity of coaches in general to rank the losing team with a worse or same record ahead of the team that beat them in a game.

  16. Forgive me if this was mentioned but Hugley did not even make the trip to Duke.

Listened to the Panther Lair guy last night and today and agree with him that Duke in second half put their big guys on Pitt’s shooters who then couldn’t get a shot off.
His solution…. Pitt should run some sets (practiced set plays). But the next one Pitt runs will be their first. All they run is an outer motion offense trying to set up guards.
Shire completely outcoached Capel w his second half adjustments. Pitt better find some sets because it won’t be the last time they see it.

We’ve all said this over and over. Get the big men involved!!!

    1. No, instead of finding some sets, Pitt better find another HC who knows just a wee bit about what to do on offense.

        1. But some commenters on this site think the 2nd half plunge had nothing to do with the coaching these athletes were subject to.

I saw a vastly under-coached team. We scored 9 points in a twelve minute stretch to start the 2nd half. Ok, halftime adjustments weren’t working at the 5 minute mark – draw up something else instead of doing the same thing.

I get that the coaches can’t go in the game and rebound or take a shot, but adjust the schemes you are running and make something different for the opponent to react to.

Our coaches made the game plan in the 2nd half easy for Duke to get the W.

Before the season I had posted that the Steelers had the worst roster in the Division and would only win one division game. So I was wrong – maybe half wrong – I still think they have big-time holes on their roster…

Regardless, it will be fascinating to follow Kenny Pickett’s journey in the NFL…

    1. Ive already gone on the simulator in http://www.mockdraftdatabase.com to see what will be available when the Steelers pick.

In order to get either of the two top OTs, they will have to move up a few spots, maybe 9 or 10. Otherwise, Broderick Jones from UGA was there.

The CB from Georgia Kelee Ringo will be gone even if they trade up to 9-10. Will be too expensive to get him. Joey Porter Jr might be there if they sit still.

Addison may or may not be available if they trade up. Wouldnt that be something? At least he doesnt have the dropsies and run backwards like Dionte Johnson.

No impressive DL available in the first round unless they trade up.

So, if they feel really good about somebody, they will need to pay. but otherwise looks like they could move down a couple spots and pick up a 3rd rounder.

      I know…. geek.

  20. Pitt’s biggest problem is no John Hugley. None of the remaining bigs can post up. Hard to believe Pitt can’t teach three tall players some basic post moves. How about a baby hook shot, some pivot moves, etc. The only way Feddy and the twins can score is getting fed the ball by a driving guard or rebound when they are not guarded. No threat to post someone up. If you take away Pitt’s outside shot, they can’t just feed it to their big men to post up one on one. This was also pointed out by the announcers during the Duke game.

  23. Are voting coaches confused because they think Pitt is a different team from Pittsburgh? Maybe they think Pitt is the Steelers. I was one who thought Chryst was a bad hire at Pitt with no HC-ing experience. Moose made some good cash while he was a HC. He has God-father Barry to thank for that –

The portal closes in a few days and there are only a few WR’s remaining to snag.

Pitt does have (4) FR WR’s coming to camp along with (2) FR athletes that played both WR & D in HS. So there is that, but none of the 2022 FR WR even saw the field last season.

Does being ranked now help the possibility of being ranked pre-season 2023? I think so because there is a reference point to look at that has Pitt’s name on it for the voters.

I agree it is a mystery, but if he is not coming back why is he on the bench and why announce why he didn’t make the trip.

  28. I just looked at the current roster for the WR position and wow are we thin at that position. Be thankful we have Mumpfield and Means. I do think FR Addison Copeland III @ 6’2” 180lbs out of Buffalo, NY area will develop similar to Jared Wayne – he probably won’t be SR Wayne in 2023 but you need an opportunity to show your talent and if Pitt whiffs on the portal WR talent grab we need a 3rd starter.

    Oy vey!

Hey, while looking at the WR’s I couldn’t help noticing how depleted the LB-er group is – maybe the two 412 transfers are candidates to fill the void but the FLA guys is talked of as a safety and the LSU Davis is pegged at RB. We do have a LB-er on the roster who is a 3 star FR that is 5’10” 195lbs who joined Pitt with last year’s class. Kyle Louis from NJ – heard good things about him…

Looks like Charlie lost his depth at DE with Hayes, N.Johnson and the 4 star FR Sam Okunlola as the legit impact guys (IMO). Disappointing that we went from 3 deep at DE to 3 guys, burgers and fries.

There are still 4 or 5 days to pluck players from the portal.

and the DE room could use some help – wait, I already said that…

Agree that we need help at bth positions and a pass rusher would help as well.

Morgan must have got serious cash to leave. He had a great year.

    1. A team can sign a player that is in the TP at any time. A new signee can enroll in his new school up to the school’s late enrolment date. If not, he has to wait until the next enrollment period.

I’m not sure but some players may want to wait at their old school until they graduate (classes of 2018, 2019) or wait until best offer is received. I believe a scholarship is for a full year. The player just loses the benefits an athletic scholarship offers.

Stroud at OSU may not be turning pro. There are a couple of days left to declare, but OSU NIL is putting together a deal to keep him one more year. 34. Addison got hurt but his numbers were comparable pre-injury. He did not hurt his draft stock at all. He’ll be a top 3 Wr coming out. He’s small in stature. That did not change and that will have the biggest impact on whether he’s the first WR drafted or not. WR’s his size are not generally #1’s in the NFL. Whether at Pitt or USC that does not change. Likely, he’s a great #2 WR. Think Calvin Ridley. That’s the template for Addison. Addison is known for his work ethic so NFL teams won’t have to worry about drive.

Because if we gave up the consequences would be dire for our families and our future.

Unfortunately, I have experienced depression within my family and yes it was well treated, but not something to take lightly. Hugely might not have depression, it could be something else, but whatever it is “toughing it out is not always the answer.

          1. Some are assuming that it is an off the court issue, you think maybe depression. My thoughts were the relationship between the injury and the mental health since that is how he phrases it. Rehabbing from an injury is hard work and depressing at times. That is why I mentioned toughing it out. That apparently hasn’t worked. If they are seperate issues that is whole different story. However injuries are a part of every athletes life and how an athlete plays with them and recovers from them makes them what they are.
