Also started with the RB running right past his blocking pick-up.

Well, then again our back-up and 3rd stringer are better than our starter.

  29. So what I gather from the POV gameday thread is that PITT did nothing right today. Even in a win.

    What I saw:

PITTs running game was in plowing the field mode. Backs looked good and the line moved the defensive line out of the way all day.

Defense looked good against one of the best backs in the league.

    The pass rush came alive.

Frank Cignetti.. ah oh, wrong category. He had some awful calls. No imagination except ill-timed dumb calls. He truly is a tough coach to overcome on gamedays.

PITTs other receivers, gosh they can’t get open down the field. Bart not so great either. I know the pass routes and the play calls hinder these players, but Wayne gets open.

    1. Ike – we missed you at the tailgate yesterday – best entertainment of the day except for the Deslin Alexander sack for a safety to secure the win.

The game itself was a very ugly win. Both teams played bad FB.

Pitt stats of note: 2 INT’s with zero TD’s. While the Pitt RB’s looked like the winning combo, they averaged 3.4 ypc. We also had 2 fumbles, a 2 yard punt and 3 capable back-up QB’s standing on the sidelines.

We are 1-0 this week and should beat UVA next week with our ground attack and revitalized Dline. Six sacks were the winning statistic by far vs the cuse back-up QB.

Pitt did just enough to win – if the cuse back-up QB who struggled to hit a barn door.

Clemson and ND did physical and mental damage to Syracuse the same way WV and Tennessee did it to us this year. We had a choice and did it to ourselves. Syracuse was done in by the ACC schedulers.

Hard running by Hammond and Flemister.

  34. Back from game. Some thoughts:
    1) Game set offensive football back 50 years.
    2) Starting qb missing always hurts more than star rb ( See Peach bowl last year)
    3) What got ya more riled, the TO after 1 play or the terrible decisions by our qb, or , well, just raise your hand if you thought it was a good idea to throw back to a WR and then have him throw deep into a 30mph wind.
    4) We did our very, very best to keep an undermanned team in the game. Run right, run left, run up middle. If they were dominating the LOS they sure didn’t turn it into scores, did they.
    5) I’m really glad we went to Australia to get a punter. I’ll be there in March and I guarantee you I’ll bring back a kangaroo who is better.
    6) I’m really, really glad we won. BUT, how did we go from the most entertaining team in the country last year to this hot mess? In one year? You know the answer to this quiz, don’t ya?

  36. Lot of similarity to the 2018 season, mostly running but KP threw for 14 TDs, Slovis with 5 so far. There won’t be 2 1000 yd guys since we have 4 guys running the ball, but the total may be exceeded. Seven wins that year, so still a lot of work to do. All winnable games, but easily lost as well.

It was nice seeing our guys putting pressure on that QB, but like Slovis he held the ball much too long.

  37. I do agree that a win is better than a loss. I predicted 17-14 Pitt. You can learn as much from a win as you can from a loss and what should have been learned is that being cute doesn’t play well when you are beating a team just running the ball straight ahead. The interception kept syracuse in the game that they had no business being in. They are bad and we played equally as bad for a majority of the game.

Hammond is a very good all around back. He gets you what the play is designed to get. Syracuse had a good record because of easy scheduling, not because of talent. They started a qb that had zero starts before today’s game. Of course you would expect an experienced defense to have their way with him. They had zero players that I thought were better individual players than our guys, yet they were in it all the way. What does that say about coaching? Can anyone pick a syracuse player as being a gamechanger or better than a pitt player? Did anyone stand out?

The SEC has 4-5 top 10 teams. Big10 has two teams, OSU and Michigan, worth of any consideration. The rest of the big10 is awful. I don’t think osu or michigan would go through the sec undefeated or with one loss. OSU and Mich really only need to play a sharp game once or twice a year. If they do cfp. They couldn’t do that in the sec. Every week is a grind. Pac12 is really bad, as is the big8.

Glad you all got together for a good time. Our crowds in the stadium are light. Would be great to capitalize on steeler and penguin struggles…yet we pick this year to zero entertainment.

This was certainly the best of D line looked this year and thank goodness for that.— The D will have to play an even better game next week because VA QB Armstrong will eat us alive given additional time in the pocket. With no hope in our O putting up 30 points or more it has be be all on the D to win the game.

Other than taking a big risk in the first quarter, how did Kedon play?
NARDUZZI: Besides that big risk — he got hit as he threw it, and I think he was throwing it away is what he told me. He didn’t get it far enough out of the end zone. But I thought he played solid. We’ll go back and look at the tape, but I think it was good. He played good enough to win the football game.

Did you consider a quarterback change after the early Slovis interception?
NARDUZZI: No, not even close, no.

Comment -> I have a strong feeling Prince Slovis will return next season and King Pat will welcome him with open arms, anointing Kedan as the starter in 2023.

  42. Great to see Pitt win. Cuse missing Schroeder was huge but oh well. It’s not like Pitt has a passing game.

Happy to see Hammond and Flemister grinding out yards. All four backs will see carries in these final three games as that is what Narduzzi is willing to ride with in 2022. I don’t think the line played all that great. Three straight three and outs to start the fourth quarter? You mean the line wasn’t wearing down the Orange? That was puzzling.

It’s obvious to me the receivers are not getting open. I wonder those at the game see it differently. Slovis holding onto the ball has to be due to no one open. What a lost year for Barden. The portal will bring in two receivers. It has to.

I hope the BoT appreciates a kid like Alexandre and his contributions off the field. Great to see him ball out along with the rest of the defense.

But in the end Pitt won and I had a good time sitting with my uncle in club seats and then attending two world famous tailgate parties. That’s what truly made it all good. 44. What is most dumbfounding is that there was supposed to be this big contest between Patti and Slovis for the job, but now that Slovis has pretty much proven he is not all that, Patti doesn’t deserve as much of a chance as the wildcat.

Seriously a team that can use 3 punters can’t work in a few plays for Patti, what are they afraid of. I seem to remember some red zone plays where Patti scored touchdowns with his legs.

Maybe he is still hurt but that injury was in the second game of the year.

Again, if Minchey gets a better offer the future looks pretty bad.

Kenny Pickett threw for 14 TD’s in 2018 when Ollison and Hall each ran for over 1000 yds.

I detest Brian Kelly but give the Devil his due. Big win for the Tigers with a gutsy call in OT.
Kelly has a very strong staff of WELL PAID assistant coaches…Pitt is headed for a complete disaster next year no matter how this season ends. Slovis at QB, OLine will be totally untested, Defense will lose tremendous talent (not easily replaced in one or two years), our ability to put points on the board will suffer from transfers, punting (we used 3 punters in one game>>in my more than 65 years of watching football I never heard of anything like it), Cignetti will NOT BE FIRED and on and on and on it goes. Dave Hart here we come for a 2023 season where we will finish with a 2-10 or if I am optimistic a 3-9 season. Hey, but no problems Duzzi gets his $8 million unearned buckaroos.

    1. I think losing some of these O-linemen will be a good thing.

I have a hunch we will see some of these senior defensive players coming back in 2023. Two defensive tackles, Morgan or Haba, Simon and Marquise Williams come to mind. Anyone who thinks Hill is leaving early for the NFL shouldn’t quit their day jobs.

Cignetti will be back, along with Slovis, but my guy tells me the portal is hit for two O-linemen and two receivers who can actually play.

Next year’s record shouldn’t mean much to a large portion of Pitt fans who pound the table for hard schedules. Enjoy Cincy, WVU, ND, FSU, Louisville and North Carolina. Heinz should be rocking since Pitt fans back up their talk of course. The money from ticket sales will be much needed for the program.

      1. I appreciate your optimism, however, the brutal combination of Slovis/Cignetti does not bode well for the future. The portal is obviously the way Pitt will attempt to reconstruct the team for 2023, but it is a crapshoot on obtaining high quality players who can make a difference. The schedule is absolutely insane and very much to the disadvantage of a poorly coached and quality player challenged team.

  46. One of the things I didn’t like was going to the wildcat on 3rd and three. This just announces to the defense that we’re going to run the ball. And then we run right up the middle where two guys who no one even attempted to block were waiting.

If they put Patti in in that situation, I would like it. Now the pass is still an option and Patti runs well enough if you just want to call a run.

Slovis’ inability to escape from any pressure puts this team at a huge disadvantage against every QB we play…

Slovis did make some excellent throws to Wayne…

In the third set Coach Fisher decided to let his front-line starters contemplate their less-than-ideal play in that set. For the last 5-6 points Pitt had Sabrina Starks playing the right side and Cam Ennis playing the left side. All Pitt players except for Posada played in the match.

In the fourth set, Coach Fisher started and stayed with his A team. They took care of business in convincing fashion 25-15. Pitt goes undefeated in the round robin part of the ACC schedule.

Pitt now plays four teams for the second time: Syracuse, Louisville, Georgia Tech, and Boston College. Only the Louisville match is away. Pitt needs to win all four to host both weekend of the NCAA tournament. They need to win three of the four to share first place of the ACC with Louisville, if Louisville is the loss.

Louisville’s repeat teams are Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Pitt, and Notre Dame. Pitt is the only home match. Anna DeBeer, probably Louisville’s best player when she is healthy, has started playing again. She is only played in the back row the last two matches.

  62. Something odd I noticed yesterday:

After Devonshire missed getting an interception on a ball that went just off his fingertips, I noticed that as Devonshire came off the field, fellow cornerback Williams ran out to meet him. They seemed to be talking as Williams led Devonshire to a spot on the sidelines. Once there, Devonshire got down and did 20 pushups -presumably his consequences for not catching that ball…

I guess 20 push-ups is nothing for a football player – but during the game??

    Go Pitt.

    1. You will remember several years ago when one of our defenders missed an interception, the offending player dropped for pushups on the field and was immediately penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct. I think it may have cost us that game……

  63. Pitt men’s soccer loses 1-nil to UVA. Pitt was the aggressor in the 1st half with nothing to show on the scoreboard.

In the second half UVA did a nice job of playing keep-away and Pitt seemed lethargic if not gassed. Pretty boring 2nd half with very little threat by Pitt.

The stat sheet will show Pitt outshot UVA but never really mounted much of a threat.

Several weeks to rest now before the NCAA tournament.

  64. New rankings came out. Pitt did not receive any AP media votes but they were ranked number 38 in the coaches poll receiving 4 votes.

I know narduzzi voted for himself but who were the other three coaches. I have trouble seeing Pitt as a top 40 team.

The next three games will be a good test. None are very good but none are all that bad either. Very similar to Pitt.

    1. It is a strange year with more parity in college football it would seem. I could see a ranking of 38 for Pitt, but I don’t think there is much separation between #35-50.

  66. Come to think of it, the zone of mediocrity is probably between a ranking of 30 and 50. All these schools have a destiny tied to a lousy bowl in a lousy city playing a lousy team. The Fates can be cruel.

  67. So if the D-line does the same thing to Armstrong maybe the switch has been turned on, but I think a lot of the success was due to a second string QB that was slow to react. When it was really needed they couldn’t pressure Mayes or Cunningham. Clemson and ND had also abused both of Syracuse’s lines so we got them after they had been beat up. Much like GT got us after physical games vs. Tennessee and WV.

It was great to see them abuse a ranked team though, it would have been nicer if Slovis could have lead a couple more scoring drives in the fourth quarter, and the coaches not called the unneeded trick play. Has one worked all year?

  68. I hate to be a doom and gloom guy but with so many linemen graduating, below the line QB play and a ridiculously difficult schedule I see the distinct possibility of a 3 win season.

Hard to predict a win vs WV, Cinci, ND, FLST, UNC or Louisville, with all the others being toss up games with the exception of a possible cupcake things have not looked this dire in quite a few years.

I don’t see the portal being a net positive this year, nobody worth poaching except maybe Izzy and Hammond. Big NIL money poised to grab up all the good ones.

    1. Which one of the “really good ones” would consider coming to Pitt after this year? If Pitt had followed up the ACC Championship with at least another appearance in the game, maybe we would be more of a destination. Not now – major step back.

    2. Exactly the way I see it….Duzzi’s luck will completely run out, but he as a mega contract that will save him from being fired.

  69. O.K. let’s face it Pitt is no better than a junk bowl team at the end of the year. Next year as the narrative goes, WE WILL BE REBUILDING! So, I am turning my 4 eyes toward basketball as we open the season tonight against a team we should definitely beat, U.T. Martin. Parker Stewart transferred back to U.T. Martin, and he has proven to be a good player at a high level
IiNDIANA). Stewart bailed out after Stallings was dumped and 6 other young Panthers joined him. One man on a team like U.T. Martin cannot carry the school to a victory. I believe that we will not see a repeat of losing to a team like the Citadel, however, in the not too distant future we face the Hoopies and Michigan ……Big John Hugely will be BADLY needed. I agree with Dan this team will be much better than last year even without the sad conduct of Johnson…..I am hoping for a chance to play in the NIT////a major upgrade from previous pathetic years.

    1. Forget WVU and Mich, big test tonight. You just know UT Martin will shoot lights-out. It’s the norm for early Pitt opponents these days…

      Go Pitt.
