Pitt vs VT: Game Thread

Whistle blows in an hour. I’ll list previous predictions in a comment below.

This is a big game for the Panthers. GT and VT should be the weaker ACC teams we face going forward, maybe throw Virginia in there with them. But if Pitt doesn’t beat VT handily we may have a rocky road ahead.

HTP!

  2. Re: Dior Johnson suspension. Pitt does not, and should not wait for a legal outcome to his case.

Remember Jeff Knox (beat up a Chatam female student)? Pitt didn’t wait for a guilty verdict of assult to cut him loose. They did that right after the accusations.

Same with Jason Douglas (DUI hit & run) and many others.

Again, the university has its own rules regard proper behavior and they apply that as they see fit.

Again, does anyone think that after what happened with Dior Johnson that he shouldn’t have been suspended? PITT will dump him based on police and hospital reports, not on a legal finding of guilt. IMO that is how it should be.

In any event I’ll bet a dollar he never sees the BB court at Pitt.

  3. Izzy announced as a starter. Who know? WR’s depleted badly with Mumpfield and Barden out. Announced starters on O at WR Wayne, Bradley and Means with Bart at TE. Not sure who will come in if one of the named WR’s are injured. Yikes!

  4. Johnson played BB at nine (9!) different high schools in four years. Capel knew exactly what he was getting. Nobody jumps around that much of his own volition.

    Revising my game prediction:

42-17 VT because there is sadness in the athletic depth.

  5. Off on a tangent but a stronger AD would most certainly approve roster moves. She either did and was naive or she did and was negligent. Not a good look either way. And no she is not strong. Very passive. And that’s not mysonginist. That’s reality.

  7. I’ve said every game from Game #1 the #25 is consistently the worst player on the field on both sides of the ball. He proves me right every game. Our DB depth must be terrible. If you are here live, watch him. Constantly burned, turned around in circles, bad hips and bad instincts. I am very sad that is the best Duzz did in recruiting.

All that….plus the obligatory Cignetti is an idiot to get things started. Take that back ….. Cignetti has sucked for a long time but Narduzzi likes him because he makes him look smart.

Haven’t heard “Meatball Brains” yet this year, but let me get that started with his defense.

Here we go again. Game 6. .

I am having fewer problems today with what Cig’s trying to implement. And hopefully he’s catching on to the fact that IA is not an every-down back; he’s explosive — we just saw that a couple possessions ago — but he really struggles when asked to carry the ball 30+ times a game.

I hope Cigs keeps it that way because neither he, or Davis, are Rodney Hammond Jr.

There is some attempt, it seems, to throw the ball today.

Great for Izzy – and even better when the opposing team knew you we were all we had!

Offensive line should be commended. Great run and pass blocking. Slovis had time much of the game – and tons of time a lot. Receivers aren’t great, but if you watched live you know they were open plenty. My buddy said the TV announcers were rightfully tough and accurate on how bad Slovis is. See below.

The defense is terrible across the Board. No pressure, bad LBs and even worse DBs. There is no bright spot here. Pathetic. Never seen a cockier bunch of celebrators who accomplish nothing. That’s on the coaches.

Slovis is horrible. Slow of foot, slow of mind, can’t see the field. Thankfully we played a horrible team today. Slovis will never be the answer, he is too old to “learn” and Cignetti has nothing to “teach” him. Make a change.

A win is a win and thank God for Izzy. Beyond the O Line there is nothing else to celebrate.

As others have said, this was a horrible team we played today.

  48. I have a dumb observation. Why do opposing coaches not take the penalty when their opponent is punting from the 50 yard line or closer? In the old days, it was to reduce the angle for the punter who typically angled the kick out of bounds. Nowadays, the punters kick the ball straight down the middle with back spin, so to me, it makes no sense to decline any more? I see this in the pro game and the college game and i shake my head.

We must realize this effort came against a very poor team. Good win. Not a great win.

Why is because I don’t believe he’s learned anything. Anything! It’s true I am Mr. Hyperbole lately! But this team cannot greet every contest this way. And the coaches are at the helm.

I noticed some effort by Cig to adjust and not panic in instances over the course of three Qtrs. However it’s too little, too late, IMO. Because again, once more, it’s game 6, man, it’s game 6!!

This game wasn’t decided till after the start of the 4th. I think folks forget this was a one possession game through 3.

And the coaches got away with it today. indeed I guessed the kids had family and friends in attendance for a homecoming, because they came through in spite of the coaches.

It’s very different from 2021. And I’m not happy with Narduzzi’s hiring Cig — HE’S BEEN HERE BEFORE 8 it wasn’t pretty and a hell of a bore to watch!

        I get crazed! by it:

See, watch, hear Pitt fans this week get their hopes Up that things’ll be better from here on out!
In response, all I can say is Sun Bowl or any game we played against Big Ten a decade ago. (Iowa; Michigan State games come to mind as well as suffocating Bill Stull and making SLOVIS look equally bad.)

        I’ve seen this game before.

We have good players. There’s some talent here. It can be coached. And Narduzzi needs to take Blame for a bad hire.

  56. I don’t post during games because I get too involved in the game. Like all of you, I get frustrated by lots of things—play calls, missed blocks, missed tackles, dropped passes, etc. etc. But I try to not behave like the stock market where one event occurs and everyone panics or everyone rejoices based on that one event. Case in point, I know I moaned to myself several times today when a run into the middle of the line was called……….and the end result was another Izzy touchdown. My bad, I guess.

But I love this school and I love this team and I live and die with what happens. I even love this blog. I also know I couldn’t do any better than any of the coaches or players (or blog writers). And I realize that our dumb coaches know so much more about the players than we do. We aren’t Alabama or Georgia or (thank goodness) PSux. I feel bad that the students don’t support the school any better than they do. But I can’t change that.

We lost 2 great catalyst players this year in Pickett and Addison and I expected a drop off. And, coupled with our many injuries, it seems like that’s what we will have. Only 1 team each year can be ACC champions. Last year was our year. It may never again happen in my lifetime. And that’s ok. We don’t buy players. We don’t have the reputation of “winning every year” so that a bad game or a bad year shocks the football world and infuriates all the fans. We don’t have our players charged with felonies (now, I’m not necessarily including men’s BBall here).
The ACC announcers today were so much more upbeat about Pitt than I had expected. You’d never have known that Pitt was as bad as 90% of our comments today would have lead you to believe.
Bottom line, I guess I’d rather be rooting for a team where, if I couldn’t watch a game, I would have to ask, “Did we win today?” rather than “How much did we win by today?” That allows me some extra joy when we unexpectedly win (the eternal 13-9, beating Miami and knocking them out if the playoff, etc.).

Ok, I’ll stop. Great win over a sub-par team. Time to heal some injuries and be ready for a game in Loo-Ville!!
    Hail to Pitt!!

I am so grateful that we Pitt fans (with some exceptions, of course) are not the over-the-wall nutsos that you find at PSU, Hokie-land, virtually all of the SEC, etc.

I have a friend who went to OSU. So, I am cool with him being an OSU fan. However, if they play a bad quarter or don’t win as easily as he thinks that they should, he turns off the TV and says “I’m done.” He does not watch any more games that season. A fan, yes. Nuts, yes.

    Barely pedestrian😎 😂

  60. So happy Pitt won and head into a much-needed bye week. The GTech loss still stings but the Jackets won again today. Time to get healthy and hopefully make some adjustments in all three phases.

Getting Hammond back will be huge. I know today was Izzy’s day, but swapping those guys as a change up will be refreshing.

The receivers are a huge issue. It can’t be all Slovis. These dudes cannot get open. Safe to say Marion was a huge loss.

What happened to this defense, mainly the front four? Does Tech have a good O-line? It is tough watching corners on an island with no help. If the safeties are in run support, why the gashing in the run game up the middle?

I don’t get Carter not getting some carries, especially in short yardage. It’s like the coaches don’t want to use all of its weapons. Frustrating.

    1. Nate: Not sure if you were at the game, where the perspective is different than on TV. From my seat at the game, there were LOTS of open receivers missed by Slovis on Saturday. Of course, none of these guys are Addison, and we do miss him. But I’ve been to all of the home games, and I can definitely say this: There is blame to go around regarding the anemic passing game, but Slovis has been the number 1 problem.

Wayne hung his head and slumped back to the huddle 4 times that I noticed (and I certainly missed some) after being wide open and Slovis not seeing it or not throwing it.

The kid doesn’t have the physical or mental tangibles or the leadership intangibles to be an effective P5 QB – he just doesn’t and it is glaring.

I noticed Simon (ND transfer) was playing the middle once the game was mid-4th qtr.

For our D captain and probably best player to not come out after haftime in a 1 point game seems like a serious injury.

We’ll need SirD for the Louisville game. The cards also won yesterday and will be ready to knock off the ACC champs at their nest.

There will be no easy games the rest of the way.

I’m buying Duzz a pair of steel toed boots and sending pictures to illustrate their use.

At one point yesterday, Pitt had a 15 point lead early in the 4th qtr. Cig & Duzz reverted to conservative play calling and the next thing you know VT is lining up for a 2 point conversion to tie it with 10 minutes left in the game.

    Thank goodness for Izzy.

  67. Still great room for improvement but I actually though the O-line was giving Slovis more time on some plays and he was improving as well. Yes he did miss some open guys, make the wrong decisions and throw some errant passes, but he also completed 15 for 170 yards with quite a few near misses. I think too many guys are trying to hold him up to last years standard set by KP. No he isn’t KP and he doesn’t have Addison to catch everything thrown his way.

He was also put in the position to thrown on third and long too often making it really tough. He did hit Means in the hands on that long one. We need Means and others to come down with those contested balls. He also did not have Mumpfield yesterday and I thought Bradley did pretty well unlike many here. He also doesn’t have two go to tight ends Bart is swell but Krull is missed.

  68. The other huge adjustment for the fans is heavy run vs heavy pass. Many runs hit the wall and go no where, it is going to happen often and is much more frustrating than an incomplete pass. Also draws boos which incomplete passes don’t. Requires much more patience which many don’t have. Izzy doesn’t have six TD’s and set the individual running record without hitting that wall multiple times.

Funny how people are critical of Cig when he hits that wall but Cig gets zero credit when he makes those spectacular runs. I don’t know how well it shows on TV, but Izzy’s acceleration is a thing to behold, no one came close to catching him when he broke the line.

Defensive play was frustrating to watch yesterday, the lack of pressure allowed VT the time to complete passes. Lucky they dropped more than us yesterday. The D did get a couple of three and outs which did turn the tide and also the huge hit and fumble which probably turned the tide again and probably saved the game. Holding VT to three one time and pushing them from the redzone to the fifty was also very sweet.

It’s football not a work of art.

He ever even looked at them. In addition he could have run for 1st down on 2 occasions. He plays like he’s still injured and doesn’t want to get hit. He just can’t be that bad a QB!

    1. I agree with you 100%. Slovis is gun shy. Yes, I did note that he was trying to stay in the pocket, but when his protection breaks down he has very limited ability to scramble out of trouble. I believe the concussion that he suffered has caused him to be indecisive in many situations…he is hesitant and for whatever reason he is missing chances to throw to open receivers. Watching a game on TV is not the same as seeing it in person because no matter how good the camera work is the field of view is limited .

  72. if I’m betting on it, I’d bet Izzy doesn’t have any significant NFL career or even a small future there, certainly not long and successful

I doubt he gets drafted and fully expect him back next year

    fast, YES
ability to make someone miss, virtually none and that is required in the NFL
durability, none , will never make it to a second contract and I question first obviously

    anyone think differently?
    .

Slowvis getting a ton of criticism and appearing to deserve some but face it, nobody here knows the route assignments on each play, there appear to be both mistakes there by receivers knowing AND physical abilities

one thing imo clearly apparent about Slowvis is his inability to operate off schedule both because he can’t run well when needed and he doesn’t appear to SEE the field and be able to keep his eyes up as required

think about it, IF receivers run their proper routes both on their own AND don’t get knocked off their timing/positioning by the defender, KS needs to process at least primary, then secondary and then whatever potential 3rd option is available

anyone thinking the Pitt passing game is on the verge of all that coming together?
Cig? Slowv? receiving crew? o-line? RB’s picking up blitzes(far better yesterday)?

those that assign blame to ONE part? don’t take another USC qb? c’mon man

    .

and related, watched a bunch of other CFB qb’s yesterday, the WSU kid is very good so let’s pursue HIM through transfer and NIL offer

there were many others and EVERYONE I saw seemed to be able to move with pocket awareness and run ability outside it

    1. Did you ever watch a PSUX game with Saquon Barkley in the backfield especially against a good run defense team. And let me be clear, Barkley, was an amazing college RB. As fast as Izzy is I have my doubts that he is faster than Barkley who ran a 4.41 NFL Combine 40. And he is 20 lbs bigger than Izzy. But if you did watch Barkley at PSUX in a tough game he often was stopped near the line of scrimmage. That’s just the way it is. But yes you are right, Izzy does have his limitations just like Barkley or almost any back has. You will not have to wait until 2024 to find out if he will be drafted because I expect he will be gone after this year if his 2022 season continues on its current track. I hope I’m wrong.

Barkley was amazing and fast, Izzy probably very similar in 40 but Barkley could change direction and jump cut which Izzy nearly can’t at all

When a running back is being called on time after time, after time the chances for serious injury obviously increase. Breaking TD’s amazing record is truly an achievement, however, if we had a solid passing game this never would have happened. What will Pitt do if Izzy has to sit out 2 or 3 games during the next part of our schedule when we will be playing the better ACC teams? Change from running the ball with a great back who is on the medical sidelines to Slovis and receivers with the dropsy pass syndrome?

and…..on another front I am not impressed with our Aussie. The Hokies punter was terrible, however, we do not have THE BIG FOOT needed to save our butts when the offense breaks down.

Last but not least, the bye week comes at a time when it is very badly needed. But, we can all count on one thing, Narduzzi will say that we will be making the needed “adjustments” to get us on a strong winning path Hey , coming from Brooklyn I can sell ya da Brooklyn Bridge.

Couldn’t agree more on the punter. Just not good and like the kicker it’s going to cost us one.
Our replacement left tackle is going to be a monster.
Bigger overall problem the remainder of the season and into ZT year is the balance of the line – especially the slow starts and QB. I have no clue what is really up w Slowvis – no one here does, but is is a liability. Is the RS freshman the answer moving forward? Don’t know that either.

On one of his few runs he stepped out of bounds to avoid getting hit. Nard doesn’t talk about injuries so we just don’t know.

Cignetti took what he was given by the VT defense, hence six touchdowns and a win.

Slovis might not be a liability but unfortunately from where I’m sitting I think he will be returning to Pitt next season because IMO he doesn’t have a snow balls chance in hell of being drafted in the NFL if he continues to play at his current level at Pitt. Grade C minus at best and gives Pitt almost no run option at the position.

We haven’t played anyone good, other than Tenn which was a decent performance, but not exceptional. Results remind me of Darrin Hall. Bigger backs (both about 6 ft. 215), great breakaway speed, great kid, coachable. Field vision and one cut max are the downsides. I like Izzy alot. I think Hammond’s skill sets transfer more to the league.

So then the run-heavy Cignetti calls started to make more sense. I think, with Mumpfield out, this became one of those “let’s get out of here with a win however we can” games. After the GT disappointment, I was figuring we needed to go on a win streak through to the miami game and play the canes with 2 losses. If we do that, we should be ranked again. Some think if we win the next two games we’ll be ranked. Not in my book, nor does history in the last 40 years back that line of thinking.

As it turned out, Pitt beat the spread so would have lost that bet.
But then, who knew Izzy would go to the Hizzy so often.

Noted in the pre-game post & discussion that following the GT loss, there was some pointing out the optimism of some folks with respect to predicting a 10-2 or 11-1 season. I predicted 9-3 without knowing how Slovis would actually do vs his potential, along with injuries. We’ve been hit hard in the injury area and its impacted our defense’s ability to get to the QB.

Still believe 9-3 is possible but need to get most back to health and will need some breaks. Miami (and Van Dyke) not looking as good as projected in the pre-season, while UNC looks to be taking their place.

well, not really a question, more a gimme 😦

how about, will our punter average yardage be greater than total points? that is a tough one (THEIR punter was maybe(?) worse, but ours gave up the points)

how about will the winning team score more points than our punter’s shortest punt? (in doubt for a while)

and there will certainly be player celebration skits galore, I KNOW they are being rehearsed right now (frankly there was somewhat LESS of this 🙂 )

    can’t wait 😦 😦

    1. Thanks JoeL. As you suspected it is behind a pay wall. And I wanted to be among the first to thank you for paying the required fee for all of us cheap POVers!

  102. Pitt volleyball moves up one spot to #8 in this week’s AVCA poll. Georgia Tech drops down one to #11. Louisville remains at #2.

Other teams of note in the poll has San Diego remaining at #4 and Towson remaining outside the top 25 at #27. Those are Pitt’s two loses. Towson will probably be undefeated going into the NCAA tournament. If Pitt and Penn State host in the first round, Townson would be in the Penn State group as it now stands.

It was good to see all the posting done during the Pitt vs. Georgia Tech match on Sunday. I watched the replay. Here are some things of note:
    1. Lexis Akeo did not play after the first two sets. Pitt went to a 5-1 off and on in the last two sets. Cam Ennis came in as the second setter when we went back to a 6-2 and did quite well.
    2. Starks had an off night which prompted Coach Fisher to put Rachel Fairbanks on the front line.
    3. As was mentioned, the match was the first time Georgia Tech played in the basketball arena. The attendance was 3,418 which is almost three times what their volleyball venue holds. The crowd was very passionate. Last time Pitt played at Georgia Tech an older fan was thrown out of the arena by the referees. On his way out he offered the up referee his glasses.
    4. Pitt was definitely the better team on the court although Julia Bergmann of Georgia Tech was the best player on the court. She was last year’s ACC player of the year and will repeat again this year.
    5. Buzzerio was the diamond of this year’s transfers. She held her own with Bergmann at the net. If we did not have her, we would be hurting. After this year we are losing a lot: Gray, Buzzerio, Starks, and Ennis. Ennis was a great pickup as well as she is equal to a less than healthy Akeo presently.
