The FrankCan Cup Golf has been scheduled for 2:00 pm. September 2, 2022 at Willowbrook CC.
Thanks to PittFan1 for securing the Tee Times.

The price per golfer is $75 which should cover golf and some prizes. Cash Bar and Food afterwards.
Anyone that wants to sponsor additional prizes is welcome to do so.

Since Fran will have his hands full with his famous tailgate the night before, I have agreed to coordinate the event.

This event has been great fun and all are welcome including non-golfers who want to hang out with fellow POVers. Willowbrook is a Country Club so please dress and act accordingly.

  5. If more Pitt fans had his passion, Pitt would have the fanbase and cred needed to become Power Two and to eventually get a lucrative invite to the super league.

    But most Pitt alums rarely attended a game as students. Most alums don’t donate to athletics. Most alums just don’t care. I blame the culture created by a Nitter BOT back in the 80’s.

    In two years, Pitt will be playing central Florida, east Carolina, UConn and Elon in football. Pitts football budget will be slashed since no network is gonna want to broadcast these games and no fan is going to buy a ticket to watch this trash.

    Yet narduzzi affectionately known as King Pat is locked in at $8million with an escalation clause. Way to go Heather.

  6. Ike, I’ll be at OBX in august. In Corolla. Chances I see heather there when Clemson and FSU bolt to the SEC and Virginia and North Carolina accept a Big Ten invite. I think 90 percent. Should I set the odds higher? Should I thank her for HCPN’s albatross contract after all this? If I do meet her, I’ll of course compliment her on the yellow bathing suit and I’ll personally offer my services to rework her resume for an AD position at Indiana. How does that sound? 😎

    1. GC, totally agree. Most OLmen take 2-3 years to develop. I really like Kradel, probably will land in the NFL. My biggest concern on the OL is Drexel Owens,,seems a bit undersized and got handled/bad snaps in a few games including the Wake game..he is the weak-link coming off of last year but hopefully, in the off-season he upped his game.

  8. If Pitt had a BOT that prioritized athletics, Pitt would be top 2. You can complain about Heather and Duzz all you want but the buck starts and ends with the BOT. Need their investment to make a leap in status. Otherwise, Heather and Duzz are doing it the right way with what they have. Just reality.

    I’m old enough top remember when some people here chased Jamie Dixon out of town. The reason that failed is not because Jamie Dixon was a savant coach … it was because Pitt did not have the infrastructure to be better. That comes from the top. Wanny left because he did not have the infrastructure needed to keep building a program. The SI article was the catalyst to cutting ties with him but the reason he did not get along with SP was money from Pitt.

    Boosters and all that will come from Pitt investing in them … Pitt is where they choose to be. Turn on the spigot and Pitt will have donors lining up …

    You spend too much time focusing on middle management, Tex. Duzz is building a fine program with what he’s given. Heather is doing fine with what she has, too.

    I understand wanting more and expecting more and not settling … but Pitt has limitations. And it’s not boosters and donors and alumni and attendance and viewership … it’s the BOT’s reluctance to invest more in Pitt athletics.

    Nothing more. Nothing less. Everything else is just noise and you spend way too much time complaining about the noise.

    We have 30 years of data showing that every Pitt football coach has the same ceiling and floor. It’s not the coaches. It’s the school. Athletic directors come and go. Football coaches come and go. Same exact thing happens every single time.

    Heather, Duzz have zero affect on NCAAF. Zero. If Pitt wants to be in the P2 … they will be. They have the money to make it happen. If they don’t, they won’t.

    W’s and L’s won’t matter. Boosters won’t matter.

    School investment will. That’s it.

  9. Alea iacta est (The die is cast) >>Yeah, I took Latin. It is too late to change Pitt’s fortunes in the scheme of what is transpiring in search of much greater media money. The bottom line is that Pittsburgh is not a huge TV market, Pitt’s fanbase is MUCH MUCH smaller than PSUX”S and there are other very viable options for the new MEGA conference to choose.. The only way (outside chance) that we have is for Pitt to somehow have a miracle football season (losing no more than 1 game) and winning a major bowl. The focus would shift to those who would say, “Pitt is a football power and must be included in the new conference (It ain’t gonna happen). Let’s all get off our preconceived opinions about the BOT, Duzzi and Miss Fanta because there are other schools with so, so athletic records, coaches, AD’s, academics and inept BOT’s that will be included in the $$$ Conference. As I have said before (I was in national broadcast advertising for more than 35 years) this all about counting eyeballs to view advertising on the networks that win the soon to be decided
    media contracts>>>>>and that’s all it will ever be!!!

  10. Great story on the Lair about Daniels calling Narduzzi early on Saturday to inform him of his intention to commit to Minnesota. During the call or just there after he changed his mind and decided to commit to Pitt. A great sales job by Narduzzi that I’m sure Tex is now prepared to give our head coach great credit for.

  12. I would expect the acc to either add big 12 schools or combine with the big 12 to form a super conference. Yes it will get unwieldy and scheduling and logistics will become nightmares. But it’s survival first.

    So today the acc stands at 14 football members. The domers are another 0.5 since they play 5-6 acc schools every year.

    I can see the acc losing at least four current members to either the big ten or sec. So let’s say ten acc schools are left. A conference needs at least 16 but I say let’s go for twenty and two divisions.

    So what ten schools make the invite list? I’ll tell you.

    2. Your prediction is not too far off. Sports Illustrated has a detailed study of the future of college football and Pitt, Syracuse, and BC are outside looking in. ND will jump to the Big/10/15/20 because it makes sense for them on many levels and the NBC contract will be negotiated…….money talks and the Domers are in the driver’s seat. The ACC is in HUGE trouble and Pitt sadly has almost NO LEVERAGE to convince any new startup conference to include Western Pa already covered by PSUX.

      1. That’s why the acc needs to begin poaching the big 12 before the big 12 poaches the pac ten or even some acc schools. I’d be proactive on this and extend immediate offers to all the major Texas schools except smu. That’s four more schools making the acc stand at 18. I’d then offer WVU and Cincy.

          A pod of Pitt, Syracuse, BC, WVU and either Cincy or Louisville would be pretty cool.

          Also, will we see a conference semifinal game played between two pods with the winner facing the champ from the other pods game?

          This can get exciting or be awful if Pitt is left out in the cold.

    2. I think it is pure speculation that is no more clairvoyant than your or my thoughts at this point. My thoughts: I think there will be at least three conferences (four works best for playoffs). If there are only two, as this SI article states, they will both be coast to coast. They will not be two parts of the same league. They will be competitors for the all mighty TV dollar. That being the case, I don’t see it likely that the SEC decides to simply concede the fifth most populous state to the big. The SEC will have a PA team and it will be Pitt…Unless the Big 10 makes a preemptive move and snags Pitt before the SEC can. Speculation is easy!

  17. Pitt fans will support any conference and any schedule. Pitt fans are one of the most loyal fan bases since most schools would have been emotionally crushed after what the Killer Bs and J Dennis did to Pitt back in the mid 80’s to early 90’s. I witnessed that first hand.

    Pitt will just have a near zero chance at any future playoff or hopes for a national title.

    I’m fine with that as long as Pitt can become consistently good. Meaning 8-9 win seasons and the occasional conference title or new years bowl assuming bowls continue to be played.

    And if Pitt can still get some players into the NFL that become stars.

    And there’s always a chance when this super league forms down the road. If the concept of promotion and relegation exists like it does in the premier league, Pitt can play itself in by earning it.

    Temple gets me more excited than playing duke or wake forest.

  18. The only leverage Pitt has is to go 11-0 or 10-1 and be in the picture for a National Championship which I believe is possible this year.

    This conference consolidation has been coming for years. NIL JUST fueled the fire. This is why Pitt needs a 5/10/20 year plan and a committee on unintended consequences! (See Pitt Stadium removal)

  20. danh72 you have clear vision. Pitt has to win ’em all or 10-1 as I previously said. Our fanbase does not attend most games with more than 35-40,000 and our alumni support for athletics is way below many other schools.
    Pittsburgh is NOT a MJOR TV MARKET! Advertisers count eyeballs for TV and ears for radio– the story of my professional advertising career (national radio) THE TRUTH HURTS!!

  23. No offense to anyone here, but I believe NCAA FB is far too fluid for any long term plans. But yes to short-term contingencies

    Having said all that … if ND decides to stay independent, then I don’t see any reason for any panic. The reasons that SEC took in Tex and Okla and B10 took in USC and UCLA was for TV market and recruiting expansion. Tex and Cali are two of the best recruiting areas

    Conversely, Clemson and FSU are already in the SEC footprint. Not sure if teams like Zona, Sanford or Oregon wouldn’t be more appealing

  25. Not worried about the future or the past, what is important to me is the now. Pitt football just had its best season in years and the prospects for this year and the next couple years looks pretty good.

    Capel looks to be rising like the Phoenix from the ashes of despair which was totally unexpected. Will these guys jell into a competitive group, who knows but that is about as far into the future that I am interested in.

Given Pitts long standing mediocrity, incompetent athletic leadership through the years, deemphasizing football every time Pitt is on the cusp of greatness, some bad luck, and really poor decisions made by the BOT, I’m truly amazed Pitt can get even 35,000 fans to half way fill up Heinz. To me in a pro sports town, that’s loyalty or we’ve all got some serious psychological issues.

  28. Zeiss on the FAN this morning says for Pitt not to panic. There eventually will be 4 divisions in college football with 60 teams. Pitt, he says, has the 45th largest college tv market (really?) and will be included.

    1. It actually has the 47th. Roughly 1.1 million fans. All depends on the source and methodology. But Pitt is most definitely outside the top 40. And frankly Zeise should be worried as well as every Pitt fan. If the acc loses 4-6 schools to other conferences, espn will tear up the contract and it’s highly doubtful that any other network will come to the rescue. Either the acc needs to poach the big 12 now or Pitt should apply for membership in the big 12. This GOR is meaningless if a conference dissolves and has no TV suitor or a vastly finished contract.

  31. The acc needs this kind of mentality and this kind of leader. The big 12 is more preferred over the pac 10. Let’s merge the two conferences and settle on the best 24 schools now. Don’t delay.

  38. Thinking outside the box. What could convince notre dame. For some reason they have historically spurned the big ten. They are an acc school with the exception for football and seem to like the acc. Many of their alumni live along the eastern seaboard.

    What if the acc went after penn state. That gets penn state out of Ohio states shadow. Would adding those power schools be enough to convince Clemson and Florida state to stay.

    At the same time I’d make overtures to Rutgers and Maryland.

    Adding Cincy, WVU and CFU if necessary.

    And then of course, the tv payout should be based on performance and tv ratings. That means unequal sharing. But I think that’s only fair.

  41. Since 2015, 13 schools have appeared in the College Football Playoffs. Of those, only 6 have appeared more than once and two of those only twice. These are, essentially, the teams that matter. The rest will be added to fill schedules (cannon fodder). Which teams and how many are in the conferences and pods will depend solely on how much content the broadcasters need. The usual suspects (with one or two cinderellas for good human interest stories) will be in the playoffs every year. As isnore said, this is about eyeballs not footballs.

  43. ND will go to the Big10 and it will be one of the easiest choices they’ve ever made. It will cost them but be worth it.

    The Big 10 and SEC are on a collision course to create their own playoff. 8 teams. 4 from each conference. That will be the impetus to ND joining.

    If the ACC and the 12’s were smart they would create a third conference. Create a 12 team playoff with that Big 10 and SEC with each conference getting 4 schools in.

    Big 10 should try to add ND, FSU, Stanford and Virginia. That would make them a 20 team super conference.

    SEC should try for UNC, Clemson, Miami and Oregon to get them to 20.

    ACC and the 12’s plus should form the following alliance with the remaining schools …

    Pac-12 contribution: Washington, Arizona, Utah and Colorado
    Big 12 contribution: BYU, Cincinnati, UCF, Houston, Baylor, WVU, OKST, TCU, Iowa State
    ACC contribution: Louisville, Pitt, VT, Duke, NCST
    Randoms: JMU, East Carolina

    The ACC and the 12’s membership factors in potential more than recent contributions. I don’t see a case for BC for Cuse. Cuse being the most difficult cut from the ACC.

      I think the acc can offer them a better deal with favorable revenue sharing to their liking

      If the acc can hold together, I would think the acc with notre dame and penn state is worth more than the big ten. And if I were the acc I’d expand to twenty and bring in the next four largest markets. That may include Washington, Oregon, TCU and Houston.

  47. Pitt to some extent is cursed by geography. Cursed by a population decline. Cursed by some very bad decisions made by so called leadership back in the 80’s and 90’s. Cursed by being a regional brand with limited national appeal. Cursed by being mediocre across most sports in most years. Cursed by being in a pro sports town.

    Only a voodoo witch from new Orleans can lift the curse. But she’s gonna want $10 million and Pitt couldn’t even afford Addison for three.

  48. If penn state and notre dame were to join the acc, the total fanbase would stand at 38 million

    The big ten with recent additions of usc and ucla would stand at 43 million.

    Acc at 16 schools. Big ten at 14.

    So the big ten payout per school would still be higher unless the acc forgoes equal revenue sharing and that may be enough to convince notre dame.

    Notre dame is the only school with true national appeal so I would think they would receive a special premium above and beyond their sheer fanbase figures.

    The big ten could sweeten the pot by adding Washington and Oregon or by raiding the acc and trapping Virginia and North Carolina.

    The acc is in a position of weakness.

    1. As indicated before the announcement, the big10 will NOT add oregon and washington to the league. There is no benefit to the Big to make that move. NONE! Zero. The crazy thing, is that oregon and washington have no idea why they bring no benefit to inclusion. Pitt brings no benefit either, Sorry. Pitt doesn’t know why either and hasn’t known for years. It isn’t because of State Penn. Could Pitt have a chance if they made some massive changes, a resounding yes, but it is probably too late.

      I am no longer in the free advice space since our AD would not give credence to the POV suggestion box that Reed sent Borghetti. I can tell you with high confidence that what you are seeing and reading is much different than what is actually being talked about in Big leadership offices (Pres and ADs offices). I will gladly say I got it wrong if Oregon, Washington or Pitt gets invited.

  55. About 25-30 minutes but captures the realistic state of college football pretty well. Obviously just one set of opinions.

    For those that have highlighted the deficiencies of Pitt’s leadership over the years, this appears to be the inevitable outcome. I would say it looks to be too late to be in the upper side of the new balance of power. Too bad but not surprising.

  56. A lot of conference realignment is led by Disney through ESPN. The media, which used to be on the verge of bankruptcy in the 80s, is now a billion dollar industry.

    The major media networks have been using sensationalism to drive emotions with the news they present in order to attract more viewers for more advertising.

    One way for the ACC to circumnavigate what ESPN wants is for the ACC to go after teams themselves, as many have suggested.

    If I were them, I would send out invites to Texas A&M (who seemed displeased with Texas joining the sec,) Psu, Wvu, Kansas and Kansas St. (Good for bbal/football) and Oklahoma St.
    Then I would let Notre Dame know about it.
    After that, talk to the Pac12, remaining big12 teams, and whoever else is around, and see about forming a West Coast/Midwest conference to be paired with an East Coast conference.

  57. IMO Pitt’s fate comes down to this. Many are predicting (such as Herbstreet) that CFB will end up with 2 major conferences … SEC and B10. If so, Pitt is likely screwed

    If not, Pitt will likely be included in any set up that would include 3 or 4 conferences.

    You can continue the name blame but it all comes down to major things: Location and enrollment (or in other words, booster $$)

  58. I believe the bottom line is that Fox and ESPN are looking at a model similar to the NFL (or at least trying to get closer to that) where the likelihood of meaningful games is much higher than today. For sure too many match-ups that are not exciting.

    As such, too many options would dilute the product and hence the total number of targeted schools will remain limited. That’s why just the 2 super leagues seems to be the outcome.

    That puts a lot of pretty good schools, probably Pitt, on the outside looking in.

    I would argue that overall Pitt is a better football school then some already in the Big but for sure does not add to the overall revenue. That’s pretty much what WBB pointed out.

  60. Rutgers certainly hasn’t earned a slot, and it’s possible that I suppose that it’s get shoved out,.. especially if it’s determined that it is not an influencer in the NY/NJ market

    Which leads to why the Northeast will likely have only one or two teams … it’s made up of a bunch of NFL cities that can care less about CFB. I’m pretty sure that the fave CFB team in NYC is ND and certainly not Rutgers. He has, I’m not so sure LA is crazy about CFB, but it’s a great recruiting area as is Texas

    PSU is about Northeast, more so than Pitt.

    Best case is to somehow create a 3rd super conference.

      Only way domers join is if they get huge time scheduling flexibility and the lions share of revenues. Clemson would immediately call the sec if that was offered. Conference would be toast.

      The acc is going the route of the dinosaur and Pitt still thinks they are T-Rex with a brain.

  73. As acc commissioner for a day, here’s what I’d do. I’d merge with the big 12 and add gold domers, nitters and Rutgers and Maryland. I’d give the domers four free games they can schedule. Most likely usc, navy, Michigan and some rotating non conference school. I’d also give the domers a larger cut of the revenues based on performance and tv ratings.

    This would be a 32 school conference with 8 divisions. Coast to coast.

    Calling the B1G or the SEC? For all we know, they are, but we all know that’s going nowhere. Should they ask for membership in the Big 12? I just don’t think that would be a smart move for a multitude of reasons. #1 The ACC is intact at this point. #2 There is the GoR. #3 What would that gain us?

    The Big 12 is not gonna be part of the club no matter how many they add. If a couple of teams get poached from the ACC, I guess that leaves the ACC in the same position as the Big 12. There are many other teams out there that could be included.

    In addition to this, what about non -revenue sports? This almost seems like the beginning of the end to them. I’d rather Pitt play regionally and be able to hold onto other sports. If the argument is that making more football money would allow non-revenue teams to travel further, well, maybe. But I think NIL is gonna demand more and more money. Flying a volleyball team across the country is gonna be eliminated.

    Just my two cents… and please let me know if my reasoning has failed me.

    2. The Law School’s ratings have been sinking and are disgraceful when compared with Pitt’s other graduate schools. I would be suprised to see the massive donation go entirely to law. Pitt needs academic support in many areas and a massive sports donation would be nice, but our football problems will not be resolved with money, sadly we are stuck in a state dominated by one major power and that power in cow country IS NOT OUR FRIEND!!

  85. It’s surprising that so many in this space are predicting the demise of the ACC. Of course, if the entire sports conference concept falls apart then the ACC would collapse as well. But if cooler heads prevail in college sports, there will be an understanding that the conference setup is best for basketball and the minor sports.

    Aside from a few colleges who are crazy football nuts, the university presidents will not preside over the destruction of minor sports that are an important constituency of college life. State schools will hear from their state legislatures if they even think about eliminating minor sports so that schools like Rutgers can play UCLA in football. And I don’t think that Clemson or FSU want to be another Pedo, which is a good football program that never wins anything.

    What is the point of increasing football revenue by huge amounts if the minor sports are gone? The ACC has hidden strengths in its people who support basketball and the minor college sports, and I predict they will get ND to join, whatever it takes, and then add another team for balance. Likewise, other conferences will feel the political pressure to remain intact. If I am Pitt, and some alum offers $100 million to the university if it will agree to eliminate minor sports, the answer would obviously be no because the broadbased mission includes offering athletic opportunities to its student body.

I would have no problems being in a conference of 2nd tier schools who have (high) academic standards for student athletes, and play similar schools within a geographical area that allows fans to travel. I feel bad for the Hoopie fans…they have no away game that would take less than 4 days to reach on a John Deere.

  92. Under the FWIW category, Phil Steele seems pretty high on the Panthers. While he doesn’t think they will be nearly as explosive, he does like Slovis. He also thinks they have the best OL in the ACC. He also likes Mumpford and Wayne as well as the RBs. And he also rates the DL is one of the best in the nation

    He thinks they have a real good chance for the Coastal along with Miami

  93. One thing some are forgetting is that this Big Ten vs SEC realignment is really Fox Sports vs ESPN. Its their money so they are the true puppet masters and everyone else is their pawns. Neither league is doing anything of note without getting the nod from their network. So thinking a bit ahead, if ESPN allows the SEC to breakup the ACC by taking Clemson, FSU, Miami, GT, what will this force Notre Dame to do? ND will relunctantly move to the Big Ten to have a path to the National Football Championship and a league for all their other sports. That’s 2-3 ND football games a year for ESPN plus ND’s other sports which because of the name, draws eyeballs to the screen,

    Likewise, ESPN will lose the ACC Network which makes money for them even after paying the ACC. The conference reported $397,411,225 in television revenue for this fiscal year, up 20 percent from last year. Keep in mind since ESPN owns both the ACC and the SEC, the incremental increase in TV revenue generated for the SEC by the defection of some ACC schools won’t nearly cover this. Similarly, all other schools that move to the BIG Ten is lost revenue for ESPN and increased revenue for their competitor Fox Sports. This is what is really in play here. Not school culture, not lost rivalries, not travel costs. So the real Anekin-becoming-Darth Vader is our Alliance partner, the Big Ten. They will try to breakup the ACC in order to get their coveted prize of Notre Dame since offering to add Stanford was not enough. Meanwhile, ESPN will try to keep the ACC afloat without overpaying too much.

  101. Maybe Pitt should go back to being an Independent like in the 50s and 60s. Think about it. If enough colleges did that they could put together a pretty good schedule and sell games to the other networks. Pitt could play ND, WVU, and some schools like Cal, BC, ASU, Navy, ‘Cuse with some Big 12 and PAC 12 schools thrown in. Round it out with a Mac and some Northeast cupcakes and you have a pretty good national schedule

  107. kman, my assumption is that some of the better programs in the country will end up in lesser conferences. They could also decide to go independent. If a network such as ABC, or some streaming network, wants to show college games without signing a 10 year contract with a conference such as ACC that could become watered down, they could put together a nice package of games with teams that could possibly end up in a 12 team playoff format. The teams themselves would control their TV exposure.

  108. Don’t forget basketball. The NCAA still controls it, and can use it to pressure teams to comply with its mandates. The conferences will continue to exist for BB and for the minor sports. Clemson could slide back once the current coach retires or leaves. FSU was never the same. ND has already proven that it doesn’t need a conference for football if it can play BB and the minor sports in the ACC. Kelly left because he felt he couldn’t win a championship with one loss. Some of these colleges will develop the Pedo syndrome, where they are fairly good but never win anything in a strong conference. The grass is always greener…

  114. Domers can wait for at least two years. They like a national schedule with historic rivals. The flexibility. They want a chair at the playoff table. They have the third largest fanbase and probably largest fanbase of haters.

    Clemson wants an easy path. The sec won’t be easy. Their fit is either acc or sec. But they are big fish in small pond now. They like that.

    And Pitt just doesn’t have a good hand. Bluffing will do them no good. Plus they have an easy tell.
