PSA: For any Veterans Who Live in Maryland

PSA – This is the production company that I acted with four years ago – it is great and everything is done by veterans, from start to finish… and FREE with any Military ID.

The OLIVE BRANCH AND LAUREL CROWN ENSEMBLE exists within the ranks of the Chesapeake Shakespeare Company Resident Artists. It was born from classes sponsored by and in partnership with VetArts Connect, finding ways for health and wellness through the arts. 1. Sounds like a great program, Reed.

Watched Toney play the final minutes in the win over the Zags. And isn’t Xman inches sweet 16 with Indiana? Hard to argue that guys who have portaled out made bad choices.

Question is why could Capel not produce with that kind of potential talent. Does he not know how to develop these guys? Or does he just not know how to utilize the talent?

Either way, the word is out. I will be amazed if he can bring anybody of ACC caliber into into his program for next year. And then it will be over.

Appreciate your points, but the one thing you’re failing to mention is Capel coming in with the reputation as an “Ace” Recruiter… similar to Narduzzi and his reputation coming in as a Defensive Guru.

I think it’s pretty safe to say Capel needed Sy and preferred to have him. Problem was and is, it doesn’t seem like any other Basketball Schools had him as a priority.

This should have put Capel in position to land him.

Sure there can always be an unknown factor.

But as some point Capel is going to have to meet or better yet EXCEED expectations being the ACE Recruiter is he is rumored to be.

  4. kind of sad looking forward to another wasted year with Capel

    Pitt should do better

and let’s face it, with how things are now, making the tournament is the bar and the second weekend frankly should make everyone here happy if even from a lower seed position

what we had with Dixon was nirvana that with the changes right now will never be approached at Pitt unless some seismic shift occurs and Heather appears to NOT be that shaker even though she is working on the penalties for Pat

wonder if she is out on the recruiting trail for Jeff? or reviewing tape on the 800 transfers he’s offered, or just the sorry few players who have no other options than JC and Pitt

  7. A Duke-Carolina National Champ game would have been epic! Unfortunately, this year’s brackets would have them meeting in the Final Four. That would still be quite the national spectacle. But UNC would have to win two upsets in a row for that matchup to happen.

If somehow that were to happen, I can’t imagine the winner being able to get ready emotionally for the National Champ game two days later.

  10. Good stuff there Reed. Thanks for giving us another glimpse of you away from the POV.

As far as zags go, R Ken Sauce was a terrible matchup for them. The hogs are not big but are very long and athletic and always pressured the ball. Toney played well, nothing different then how he played for us in my opinion.

Candidly, I am not sure how the games a reffed. There is body contact (sometimes alot), on every drive. Some are called, some are not. I shook my head a few times but figured it out that there could be a call on every possession (like offensive and defensive holding in football). The players aren’t smart enough to figure out when they are more apt to get away with something or not. Refs are in a tough position and are very inconsistent, at best, which is bad for the sport, in my opinion. It’s not just a northern bias as many suggest.

I will also say that all the bounces seemed to go R Ken Sauce’s way. Zags were horrible shooting. It almost looked like the rim angles were slightly off because several balls reacted weird off the rim…..

Again, no comment on recruiting from me……

    1. it’s amusing when the game announcers call on their rules expert whose name always evades me because I knew a Serratore family growing up and he has a certain way he “sees” it,,,, and then ruling goes the other way, whoops, sorry Gene S”t”eratore 🙂

basketball judgement like charging and blocking have to be THE most difficult

the fact that contact fouls on shots can occur everywhere from the grazing touches near the shooting hand on the ball EVEN AFTER RELEASE or even the off hand all the way down to contact to the body or leg or foot and deciding if those latter 3 were enough to call or initiated by the shooter in the case of the leg, foot touch fouls

then you have the inadvertent v intentional flagrants that must be decided as to whether the offender was performing a “basketball move” that led to the foul/contact

they get a lot right but a lot wrong and in basketball OFTEN change the outcome of the games IMO

BTW, my brackets fell apart yesterday with Zags and TTech losses, couple hundreds of dollars gone that I would’ve just spent on more Balcones, so I just went and bought a couple bottles more anyway 🙂

Easy way to jump start Pitt basketball is recruiting some guys from South America, the Baltic’s and the balkans. All those regions produce technically sound players who play tough and can shoot.

I never thought Cronin was any genius at Cinncy but tonight he should be fired for utter incompetence! His UCLA team played their asses off but Cronin allowed Love for UNC to go off for 27 points in the second half. Most of them NBA threes. He never double teamed Love nor did he switch defenders til 3 minutes to go! On 90% of Loves 3s he was wide open with not a hand in his face. It was Capel-like coaching malpractice! Knew the refs would let calls go under the name of technical defense. Knew how to exploit matchups despite having less talent. But could not make it in the ACC. So don’t blame him for leaving for another opportunity and fresh start. Pitt is just not a good fit in the ACC. As AD, I’d be reaching out to the Big Ten. BC , Syracuse, WVU, Louisville and Cincy would all be fine cohorts. Tobacco Road can get cancer.

    Big 12 – one (Kansas)
    SEC – one (Arkansas)
ACC – THREE from what the media has called the weakest P6 men’s BB conference this season. (Duke, Miami and UNC)

        1. Kenny single handily won at least two games this season and elevated the play of others around him. Slovis must learn new playbook, new system, new teammates, new coaches, new city. Same girlfriend though. And remember other ACC Coastal schools got better and return starting QB’s. Will be tough to win more than 7 this year. Tougher schedule as well.

The depth chart looks hardy and we’re hoping an underclassman doesn’t make the decision to leave because of it. How can this be? I don’t have to remind anyone of the bashing Narduzzi took from the realists and impatient fans.

  20. Kenny Pickett according to pure numbers is the MOST productive Pitt Quarterback ever.

    OK, it took FIVE years.

And that’s the point. What Pitt football Head Coach has ever had the benefit of a FIVE year Starter?

To suggest that Narduzzi can now be counted upon to produce winning season after winning season without a Kenny Pickett is like saying James Conner is not a Running Back.

    LOL

  22. No knock on Kenny, but he did have a Biletnikoff winner, a couple other very good receivers, two excellent tight ends a decent O-line and OK running backs. Almost all who are returning. Not to mention a pretty strong defense at times. Slovis and/or Patti inherit all of this.

Plus the combination of O and D lines will be the best since the 80’s, and the team will not rely as heavily on it’s QB because of this and a running game.

Kenny’s great season was as much because of Addison’s great plays as it was to his stellar performance, one doesn’t happen without the other.

    1. I think you greatly underestimate QB play. Does the QB make the receiver or the receiver the QB?

      Timeless question.

Kenny is hands down the best Pitt QB ever. Yes, granted he was a near 24 year old Fifth Year senior in a three year system, but he’s far superior to even Marino’s college stats. And frankly leadership abilities.

Without Kenny, Pitt would have been playing in another cold bowl in Detroit against a MAC school.

      1. I think everyone remembers Larry Fitz, does anyone outside of Pitt remember who threw to him at Pitt?

KP was a pretty average QB till last year. An extra Covid year, a once in a lifetime event. Absolutely no comparison with Slovis freshman year vs. Kenny’s. Does it mean Slovis will have the same success, of course not, the stars aligned for Kenny and Pitt, but I do think Pitt will be good this year.

      2. Was Kenny hands down, or hands stretched?

Can’t compare best ever, ever. Different times. Is the qb good, the wr good, the ol good, or the DB bad, DL bad or opponent bad. I would unfortunately have to answer yes to all of the preceding!!

The double unprovable is the statement that without K8, Pitt would have played in a digiorno pizza bowl classic. Heck if K9 didn’t play, we may not have lost a game all year…..or lost them all. The argument is void of fact and uses some rather inept incongruent assumptions.

  23. One and done tournaments are about matchups so this talk of conference wins and losses provides good fodder, and i enjoy reading it. Let’s switch sports for a comparison. Where are all the top golfers in the WGC 1 on1 competition? All about matchups and execution in a round. Top golfers got taken out because the course may not fit them as well as others, left to right strength versus right to left, etc.

Same with basketball. The zags had a terrible draw with arc in sauce because the hogs were all fast, play in your face defense and all super athletic. Zags are not. The match up favored the hogs. Doesn’t mean they are the best team. They had the better matchup in my opinion. Another reason why Pitt bball has been so bad. Pitt doesn’t know what Pitt is. Are we athletic like arc in sauce, or slower and plugging away like zags, or defensive juggernauts. What are we? We have no identity and that is on the coaches. You can’t recruit to something you don’t even recognize. Capelli and company can’t plan for recruiting because they don’t know who they are or even who they want to be. Some say, coach to your strength but pitt does not have an identifiable strength. Zags tried to match the sauces guard play but couldn’t. They became hurried and lost that match up.

I don’t get excited about conference records in tourney time. Teams got in on their merits throughout the entire season. No other team deserved to be in the dance from the ACC. Once in, it’s all matchups. In the matchups, guard play usually determines winners and losers. that is why you have so many perceived upsets.

Just for giggles and to jog some old people’s memories on here….i patterned 100% of my hoops game (if you would call it that) off of ernie degregorio!

They knew they weren’t a team that could lose to a low talented team like Pitt, let alone get blown out. They’ve been pretty good ever since.
