2022 ACC Transfer Portal Activity

As we all know, the Transfer Portal (TP) is now ingrained in the fabric of college football recruiting. Not only are coaches making sales pitches to 16, 17, and 18 year old’s but have added the wooing of college age kids, including the players on their team, to their repertoire. All in the hopes of keeping or improving their employers standing in the sport of college football.

The recruiting site 24/7 now includes TP activities along with their “old school” team  recruiting results.

New rankings product released by 247Sports: Introducing the Transfer Team Rankings and Overall Team Rankings

Below is the 24/7 ACC “Recruit Team Ranking” for 2022. Pitt is last of the fourteen team ACC and comes in with a national rank of #73.

2022 Recruit ACC Football Team Rankings (247sports.com)

The “Transfer Team Ranking” includes only transfer recruits. Pitt currently has four and comes in with a national rank of #47.

The “Overall Team Ranking” is a combination of the two links above. Including the four transfers, Pitt moves up to #63 in the national ranking and eleventh in the ACC.

2022 Overall ACC Football Team Rankings (247sports.com)

As I was writing the ACC Recruiting article, 24/7 published an article on their updated TP reporting. It includes totals for each P5 team on players entering the portal or they recruited from the portal.

Stock watch: Examining the Power Five’s Transfer Portal transactions (247sports.com)

At the bottom of the above link are the winners and losers of the TP by conference. Here is the ACC’s.

In and out: The ACC’s biggest winners and losers in the Transfer Portal (247sports.com)

I use this 24/7 site to gather my TP activity. Below is the link I use.

2022 College Football Transfer Portal (247sports.com)

Like most data it my not be the end all, be all for completeness. For an example, 24/7 still has ex-Pitt players Leslie Smith and Noah Palmer as not having new homes. I know Palmer is going to Duquesne and recorded that info. I heard Smith has a new home but not the name. So, my data does not reflect his decision.

If anyone has a link to the Rivals Transfer Portal site, please provide the link in a comment. Always good to have a second source of information to confirm. I just cannot find the Rivals TP site on PantherLair. It could be   behind a pay wall. As to 24/7, If Pitt’s is incomplete more are incomplete.

I will not be doing an ACC team by team listing of players. That is for another day. Instead, it is a summary of year to date activity and since the TP became institutionalized in 2018 for the 2019 season.

The  24/7 article (starts with “Stock watch”), that I linked above, is for TP activity through 2/20/2022. My article includes data after that date. Another reason they may not matchup is that 24/7 includes unranked walk-ons in their data. Mine does not but I include their name(s) in a  comment section on my spreadsheet.

After all that, here is the ACC summary TP activity by team. Any ranking data used comes from Rivals and is the players “high school” rating. I forgot to mention that 24/7 re ranks a TP entry based on his college play. That is why Kedon Slovis had a 24/7 HS rating of 0.8683 3-star and is now a 24/7 0.9100 4-star.

Since it takes me days just to draft an article, I usually cut of my charts at a certain point before I end writing. So, there are cutoff issues. For example, John Vardzel TP entry is not included in this data. Pitt actually has twelve entries not the eleven as it shows in the charts. Other schools (2) have a cutoff issue.

2022 ACC Transfer Portal Activity

Three items I find interesting.

First, the number of TP entries from Virginia (19). Virginia, like Duke, Miami, and Virginia Tech, hired new head coaches for the 2022 season. Usually, the TP does not light-up until the new coach finishes his first season. Players and new coaches access roles and either stay or leave. Unlike past teams, Virginia players bailed without giving the new coach a chance. Mendenhall was obviously will regarded by his players.

The second interesting item  is the number of 2021 class recruits who are looking for new homes. I just find it fascinating those players who signed with a team gave it only a season. It is not a new HC causing the problem. Virginia had three. The other three ACC teams with new HC’s had none. Only three of the twenty-one were transfers to ACC teams.

Lastly, is the number of players from Division 1 FCS teams who are transferring into ACC teams (9). Florida State hauled in a defensive end from Albany who 24/7 re-ranked as a 0.9400 4-star. He was unranked out of high school. I wonder if Todd Sibley (Pitt) and A.J. Beatty (North Carolina) is considered a fair trade.

The next chart is a 4 year history of TP activity by school. The top chart is for those who transferred “out.” I highlighted those teams who had 40+ transfers in the three and a half years. I also highlighted the two teams with the fewest. You can see Virginia transfer losses are an anomaly with the hiring of a new HC.

The second chart are for transfers “in.” It also includes a net gain/loss of players.

Reading into the numbers, Clemson and North Carolina are only using the TP to fill immediate needs. Clemson picked up their first portal acquisition this year to fill a QB depth issue. UNC is selectively patching holes. Make what you wish of the net outflow but remember the 85 man roster requirement and it effect of the TP.

Here is a link to the FAQ about TP eligibility and requirements.

OneTime_Transfer.pdf (ncaa.org)

Not covered in that NCAA FAQ link is a new rule. In order to help teams with roster management, the NCAA has put in timelines. The new NCAA rule establishes a May first deadline for players to enter the TP to have immediate eligibilty for the upcoming  season. There is a July first waiver for the upcoming 2022 season.

That wraps up the TP review.

  1. Richard – Wow. You’ve been busy! Thanks for your work.

What jumps out at me is – where are all the “outs” ending up? Looks like some might be out in the cold…

In one chart, GT had 15 players leave and only 2 are listed under “Other School.”

And 337 more players left the ACC than transferred in…

Pitt looks pretty good in these numbers, but alas, we still don’t rank up with the big boys…

    Go Pitt.

    1. If we beat the 2 Michigan teams last season, we’d be ranked with the big boys where it really matters.

OT: Pitt baseball and softball with disappointing losses today. Our 6’8” hard throwing pitcher Billy Corcoran had a stellar outing – the bats were silent and the relief let Billy down in a loss to Bradley.

The softball team lost 10-7 to Tennessee Tech after beating them the day before 6-0 behind a complete game from FR pitcher Drogemuller. Instead of starting Drogemuller, the HC started another pitcher who lasted 1.1 innings in the loss.

    2. John – as to the outs. You are probably right about some might be out in the cold. But it’s definitely lower than the reported numbers. Just look at Pitt and the two players that 24/7 says are currently cold and shivering. But they are not. Instead, their sitting around a fireplace sipping a hot chocolate or toddy as age requires basking in the warmth of a new home.

I think tracking were a player ends up is not high on 24/7 priority list. Especially when a player goes to a lower FBS team (UConn, UMass, and a host of G5 teams), FCS teams, JUCO and even true division 2 teams.

  2. OT – remember when we were told that AD Scott Barnes was a basketball guy? Course he proved that to be completely false while at Pitt.

Today I noticed that his Oregon State Beavers lost to UCLA 94-55. That was their 14th loss in a row after a 10-game losing streak earlier this season. They are now 3 and 24.

    Couldn’t have happened to a nicer AD…

    Go Pitt.

Sanborn looks like he is in really poor health and had to be helped off the stage. I saw Johnny Winter in one of his last performances have to be helped on and off the stage. Hoping Sanborn has more time to make great music.

Some will say not true but I have heard from a blues expert and he said BB had lots of trouble with singing at the same time as playing.

Another fun fact: I was diagnosed as a youngster of having undetected polio. Idiot quack. Question. What part of my body have I NOT had trouble with in my lifetime?

    1. I think Bartholomew is faster than Krull. I think he would be fine as a traditional TE, but he was so effective as an H-back type hybrid that I’d hate to see them move him.

I hope they can find a ready-to-play portal TE who can be at least as productive as Krull – and leave GB where he is where his size and speed makes him a match-up nightmare for LBs and safeties…

  9. On the Pitt LB situation, PSN had a good article this past week on Narduzzi and Manelac visiting incoming freshman Pope on the Martin Luther King holiday and I guess convincing him to enroll early at Pitt. One week later he pack his bags and decided to do so. Looks like Pitt has him practicing at the Star LB slot. My conclusion is both coaches recognize our lack of depth at LB and are happy to get him early in hopes he may be able to contribute for us this season.

  10. The middle LB position has changed more than any with heavy pass offenses. The days of big physical guys like Singetary, Kirkland are long gone. I read that NFL coaches say that it now calls for the best athlete on D. Big enough to stop the run, fast enough to cover.

Pitt’s Dennis is a perfect example. Kids like Petrishen, a step slow at DB, that can add weight will continue to shift to LB.

  11. Rich. The reason I haven’t yet praised your latest effort is that I’m still trying to digest all the info presented. But what is apparent is that college sports have become extremely complex with the transfer portal and NIL. The two conclusions IMO are (1) you cannot judge incoming commitment classes based on any one area, it is a cumulative effort, and (2) the rich will continue to get richer (especially with NIL)

While Pope certainly looks like a promising LB prospect, don’t overlook the NJ athlete Louis. Much of his highlight film is him playing LB, and is very impressive

Of course, it helps to have B10 money to throw around. Based on these past 2 seasons, PSU’s Franklin(stein) didn’t exactly merit a large raise or a long extension… yet he received both — a 10 year extension which starts at approx $7.5M per

  14. Rich, you continue to exceed all expectations with your fine work on recruiting analysis! One thing I’ve often wondered about is what the effect of coaching continuity has on whether or not recruiting classes succeed. Narduzzi has taken a string of modest recruiting classes and with some ingesting of TP guys (and keeping guys) has won the ACC. Someone like Pickett would have transferred and we would never know what could have been if another coach had been hired.

Coaching philosophies differ from coach to coach, and, for example, recruiting classes that emphasize certain strategies and skills (such as CBs on an island) might not work for a coach who mostly uses cover 2 defenses. So changing coaches can produce or encourage transfers, and can reduce the effect of previous good recruiting classes. Maybe a retention factor should be factored in to the recruiting classes to see who stayed and developed vs. left the program (recruiting 3 top QBs in one class may improve class ranking, but could be wasting 2 scholarships).

On the other side of the coin is a complete dolt like Franklin who has achieved this continuity, and is consistently bringing in good classes, but stinks as a coach and never realizes the benefit of his good recruiting. So were the classes actually bad, or will clowns like Franklin ruin these classes?

    2. VoR – What do 4 of these 5 teams have in common – Clemson, NC State, Syracuse, Wake & Pitt? All have coaches that are now entering at least their 6’th year as HC. All had at least 9 wins last year except Syracuse. It takes time for a new HC to put his vision of what he wants in action. IMO, Narduzzi was lucky taking over a team that just needed a QB to buy him time even after the 5-7 year.

BC (2020), FSU (2018,2020), L’Ville (2019), GT (2019) Miami (2019, 2022), UNC (2019) all had HC changes for the season in (..). Look at the transfer numbers out in the years following those changes. It takes time to build a program.

Yes, there are exceptions. Satterfield at Louisville and Brown at UNC had good seasons since their hire, but both were blessed with inheriting talented players who stayed. All were gone to the pro’s, TP or eligibility the next year.

I’m tired after a long day of winning. I’m going to bed.

      1. Nardy also enjoyed the covid bonus year for players. He benefitted because of the key player needing an extra year to understand the offense. As with all D1 coaches, Nardy needs to re-balance the scholarship board pretty quickly. Will be interesting to see who gets the “it’s in the best interest of both player and team if you move on speech” in a couple of weeks.

  23. Not uncommon for safeties to move to LB and corners to move to safety as they get physically stronger while lifting the first year or so on campus. Many LB’ers turn into rush ends as well. Same thing with TE’s with good feet and hands become larger and move to the OL. Only ones that don’t typically move are the nose guards. Short and stocky rules the day. No place for them at the next position unless they eat too much and turn into refrigerators!

    1. Forgot to mention that defenses get faster as you move cornerbacks to safeties, safeties to linebackers and linebackers to rush DL. The thought is that the athletes are recruited originally at a position and have very good speed for their position, so they would hpe to keep most of that speed as they muscle up a bit. Speed, speed, speed!

    1. Calling a timeout here. I think the timeline is a bit off. Nardy got taken care of a couple of years ago, big time. There was NO, ZERO, mention of the assistants getting taken care of first at that time. So, there is a pecking order and for anyone to think that Nard put his guys first, should look at the history….not the PR.

Not saying your guarantee is incorrect NRS and candidly, believe it is probably true…Now. What I am saying is that it was a bit too late. Only after he got taken care of, did he care about assistants. No need to worry though as he is not alone. I wish I could say more, but can’t.

Nard and all other head coaches are salespeople first. Not saying that’s a bad thing, but in the industry there are operational standards that athletic departments think they are smarter than others. They aren’t. Most higher ed execs let them believe it to help their ego’s, but they just aren’t. That is why faculty typically won’t support athletics…..shenannigans!

  29. Hopefully Narduzzi and Cignetti can convince Patti to stay if he comes in second in the competition. It would be harder to go for Slovis if he comes in second. He would have to sit out a year. Plus Slovis could go pro after a great season or gets injured or falters during the year.

@Pitt ATHLETICS set a record with:
    2,997 donors
    $842,592.76 money raised

THANK YOU! We appreciate all of your support and
the impact your gifts will have on our student-athletes.”

BTW, overall, Pitt had 11,000 donors and raised just under $3 million…

    Hail to Pitt!

    1. Was the ACC championship a key factor in the athletic donations? We will never know.

  33. Last chance tonight to meet Fran and company at Hemingway’s before the game. We’ll be in the back room starting around 5 pm. Anyone wanting to join us, I’ll be the one in the mask that looks like a glass of draft beer. We will probably head up to the Pete around 7:15 to be in our seats for the tribute to Coach K at 7:45.
