2022 ACC Recruiting and More

The 2022 recruiting season is basically over. There are still two unsigned 5-stars. There are no unsigned 4-stars in the Rivals 250.

For the last 4 or 5 years I have been gathering recruiting data for the 65 P5 teams. I use Rivals data. Yes, there are some other sites (24/7, 24/7 composite, ESPN, and On3) but to be consistent and because I consider Rivals the easiest to understand & duplicate, I use Rivals.

For those of you who are not steeped in the intricacies of Rivals ranking here is this explanation from Rivals: https://n.rivals.com/news/rivals-com-football-team-recruiting-rankings-formula

The chart (Pitt’s) below shows the basic Rivals formula at work. All the key points are covered – Stars (5 thru 2), Rivals Rating ( 6.1 thru 5.2), Points awarded (150 to 15). The only thing missing are Rivals bonus points awarded for a recruit listed in their top 250. Unlike the 2021 class, both of Pitt’s 4 stars were not in the top 250.

For those interested in the math behind the chart, here is a simple explanation:

  1. Avg Star Ranking – Multiply your total number of 5-stars by five, your total number of 4-stars by 4 and do the same for the 3 and 2-stars. Sum those numbers and divide by the total number of recruits. Pitt’s cumulative stars are 37. Divided by 12 gives a 3.08 average star ranking. Rivals includes all committed recruits in this ranking be it 29 (Texas A&M, Georgia) or seven (Kansas).
  2. Rival Points Ranking (20 or less commits) – Multiply the number of recruits in the assigned Rivals “Rating” (6.1 down to 5.2) by the assigned “Points” for that “Rating”( 150 down to 15). (Example: Pitt’s two 4-stars have a rating of 5.8.  Multiply the assigned “Points” (105)  by two (recruits) for a total of 210.) Sum the individual Ratings and you have the basis for how Rivals ranks team except for:
  3. Rivals Points Ranking (21 or more commits) – Rivals only uses a team’s 20 top rated commits in calculating a team’s points. Calculation is the same as above bullet point #2 but includes only the top 20 commits.
  4. In addition, Rivals awards bonus points for commits in the Rivals 250. These points are awarded in addition to the calculated points in bullet points 2 or 3. The points awarded range from 100 for the number one recruit down to 3 points for numbers 246 thru 250.
  5. Numerical Rivals Ranking (NRR) – This is my attempt at judging the overall quality of a team’s commits. It uses Rivals Ratings (61 thru 5.2) as the basis. It sums the value of each rating and divides by the total commits. In Pitt’s case, the value is 5.608.

I’m sorry for the long winded explanation. In the future (if I’m still doing a recruiting recap), I will just throw in a link to this article.

Did you notice I used the word “commit(s)” in all those bullet points? Unlike 24/7 and On3, Rivals in their data, includes a recruit that commits but is not signed (Verbal). I know the grandparents of one recruit who received an offer and committed to a FBS team but then ran afoul of the law. He will not sign with that team. Others, not signed, could be over eager recruits who verbally committed but had no chance of receiving a real offer or have grade problems.

I was always under the impression that the majority of college football teams used walk-on’s as their punters or placekickers (a ‘K” on most recruiting sites) and then later placed on scholarship. I thought Pitt did both (Alex Kessman was a walk-on) but has trended to offering scholarships. That and the fact Clemson signed two “K’s” in the 2022 class got me to wondering if ACC teams used walk-ons or scholarships. Including the 2018 class (five classes), eight ACC  teams have signed two scholarship K’s. The other six teams have signed one (Louisville, UNC, and Virginia Tech), three (Wake Forest and Miami). Clemson signed four.

I like to color code my charts to point out what I consider interesting items. I will be  highlighting ”K’s” in yellow and unsigned commits in pink. Georgia Tech is in brownish orange as they are both in same 5.5 3-star rating.

The chart shows the 2022 ACC recruiting ranking sorted by Rivals rankings.

Pitt comes in as Rivals 71’st ( 13’th ACC) ranked recruiting class (out of 100). That is mainly due to the small class size (12). Our new Aussie 5.2  2-star punter (I wonder if he knows my Aussie cousins) doesn’t help our 9’th place finish in the ACC for star ranking. Using NRR, Pitt comes in 7’th in the ACC.

Clemson signed nine player with a rating of 5.6 or lower. The highest number for Clemson since I began tracking recruiting data in 2016. But they also signed the overall #3 recruit in QB Cade Klubnic. Will he follow the 2018 overall #1 recruit Trevor Lawrence? Lawrence sat on the bench for three games before starting. Clemson needs at least average QB play to reclaim the Atlantic.

I am done with ACC recruiting but I promised “More” in the heading. On to the Rivals top 100 rankings concentrating on the P5 teams. In the 2021 class, only one team (Oregon State ) did not make the Rivals top 100. This year, there were two (Arizona State and Kansas). In the 21 class, the lowest ranked P5 teams that made the top 100 were tied for #78 (Texas Tech and South Carolina). This class had Washington come in at #96.

The chart below shows the number of P5 recruits by stars since 2013.

The transfer portal continues to have an impact on recruiting. The 2022 class was also impacted by the return to the 85 man scholarship limit combined with the additional covid year. Overall, recruits are down 316 from its 2014 peak. Class size decreased while average stars increased. Besides the signing of 2-stars, the lower rated 3-star are suffering.

On to the tidbits.

Pitt’s twelve recruits are tied for the fifth lowest number in the Rivals 100 (plus two). Kansas (7), Southern Cal (8), Washington and Arizona State (9) have fewer. Pitt is tied with UCLA, South Florida, and Southern Methodist at twelve. Sothern Cal class, while small in size, come in at # 6 in Star Ranking’s (3.75).

The highest rated non-P5 team is Cincinnati at #41 – nineteen recruits, two 4-stars, and a 3.05 star rating.

In the 2021 class, Jackson State was the first division 1-FCS team to make the Rivals top 100 list. Head Coach “Neon” Deion Sanders did not reel in a ranked class this year but did sign the overall #1 recruit (5-star) in the 2022 class. He also reeled in the 50’th rated player a 4-star. He may be shifting to the transfer portal for recruits as he has sighed two from Florida State and a former 5-star from Miami. Since Jackson State is in Mississippi, it wouldn’t surprise me that Sanders picked up way more from the SEC.

But the FCS was not shut out. To my surprise and delight, out of the Big South Conference (the FCS conference that Robert Morris joined for football) are the 80’th ranked Campbell Fighting Camels. The Fighting Camels reeled in one 4-star (# 185). Campbell is located in Buies Creek, NC.

I am not delighted at the Fighting Camels as a football team but from the memories the mention of Campbell and nickname (Fighting Camels) dredges up. Back in my 20’s and 30’s, there was a freight line called Campbell 66 Express headquartered in Springfield, Missouri. They had a service area that stretched from Missouri to North Carolina. What always made me smile was seeing their logo (a Camel) but more importantly to my juvenile mind was their motto.

campbell’s 66 express logo – Search (bing.com)

I have been waiting for years to work this into an article or comment. I am sorry if you find it a tad blue.

A nice article by ESPN on the Campbell Fighting Camels and their recruiting prowess. This ESPN article was written 2/23 about a week after I finished this article.

How Campbell, a small FCS school in North Carolina, is competing with Deion Sanders and FBS teams (espn.com)

I will be doing an ACC Transfer Portal article. I was planning to include it in this article, but this piece is already too long.

  1. Rich, thanks for your input and effort. I always learn something new when I read your articles. Go Camels

When it comes to recruiting, I am always interested in geographical distribution. While I’m old enough to remember when Western Pa / Eastern Oh took a backseat to nobody when it came to FB recruiting, I think the reason that the national champs in 15 of the last 16 years came from the Southeast is no coincidence. Heck, many of Pitt’s best players in the last 2 decades were Florida 3-stars

Yes, schools like OSU, PSU, ND, etc recruit nationally (Bama ‘s current Heisman QB is from CA), it certainly helps to have good recruits on your backyard.

  2. Excellent job, Rich! You really do a great job of explaining how these recruiting services come up with their rankings. I’m thinking with the large number of variables such as quantity, quality, transfers, positions of need, etc. it is really hard to rank recruiting classes. Maybe Narduzzi has been bringing in top classes all these years and we didn’t know!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks – I believe you are correct on the variables. The NRR is just my attempt to add another method to rank classes for comparison.

I thought about removing “K”s from NRR, but impact was minimal. Pitt’s NNR went from 5.608 to 5.645. Still have an average class of 5.6ers,

Pitt isn’t bringing in top classes. Just doing a better job of identifying, developing and more importantly keeping those developing recruits.

  3. Richard – what a wealth of info you’ve compiled. Thank you.

Interesting that the two teams that played in the ACC Championship are at the bottom of the ACC recruiting rankings.

Pitt can’t expect to compete, star-wise, with teams like Miami, Florida State, UNC, etc. – those teams have too much of a location advantage on us, aside from our half-full stadium…

Seems to me that since portal additions and subtractions also impact everyone’s roster, they need to somehow be incorporated into the rankings…

    Go Pitt.

    1. John – Thanks. 24/7 does include TP additions in their school ranking. More on that in TP article.

Pitt and Wake should have a recruiting bump in the 2023 class but don’t expect Clemson, FSU, Miami or UNC type numbers, Syracuse didn’t have a bump after their 10-3 season. Somehow, 3 of the 4 teams above keep rolling in the recruits with bad to average records. It’s location. It’s coaching. It’s the brand.

    1. I don’t understand a $10mm drop despite all those years remaining. A deal should be cut for $8.5mm for Capel to leave so he can move back to North Carolina and not endure another awful season.

He must want one more year as a head coach as no one is hiring a guy with what will be eight consecutive losing seasons as a coach.

  4. At least make Coach Capel hire a new staff. He needs some young, up-and-comer guys who can teach sound fundamentals but who insist that mistakes be minimized…

    1. Not going to happen. Capel and his brother will go down with the ship next year if HL cuts him loose after next season. I’m not sure he will have to work after he walks away with whatever he gets if he is fired by Heather. Has Stallings ever had a job after he was fired as Pitt’s BB coach?

      Like

      1. Stallings hasn’t had a BB job since he left Pitt and he wasn’t hire-worthy since he left Vandy. Yet Pitt found a way to give the guy a golden parachute.

        Amazing!

In other news: Duzz & family were big supporters of the Pitt Day of Giving. Any reports regarding the Capel family and their support other than 20 + turnovers at the Pete in the loss to Miami?

        1. Stallings was hit with a show cause penalty and was not allowed to be hired for 3 years …

The NCAA announced a three-year show-cause penalty for former Pittsburgh basketball coach Kevin Stallings on Thursday as part of a negotiated settlement with the university following an NCAA investigation into alleged rules violations by the school’s men’s basketball and football programs.

      2. Waiting a year will be better anyways. Pitt will have a better idea of where the basketball landscape is moving. Terrible time to replace a coach right now.

    2. Of course to make that happen Lyke would actually have to put in a day’s work. The fact that she hasn’t made those demands after the second losing seasons is dereliction of duty on her part. What a lazy AD.

  5. Clemson, which is below Pitt in ACC rankings, beat Wake last night. Wake has 21 wins this year so far.

Again, I am fine with firing Capel. Just want to point out that head scratching losses are much more commonplace than one who only follows one team realizes.

  7. At this point, changes to Capel’s staff won’t help the team. He has to transform the team this off season through the portal. I don’t see him pulling it off.

    1. Not sure why any assistant coach would want to come and coach at Pitt with Capel next year. If danh72 is right, Capel’s buy out goes from 15 million this year to 5 million next year. That would make Capel a dead man walking all next year.

      Liked by 1 person

  8. The Capel buyout numbers of $15mil this year and $5 mill next year were published this morning by Mike Vucovan in the Beaver County Times, PGH Now section.

    1. Louisville is always a nightmare for the Pitt women. I remember games where we struggled to get the ball over half-court against them. Pitt actually gave them a bit of a game tonight.

Pitt can’t win with their poor shooting percentages and their high turnover rate. We missed over 40 shots tonight…and had 20 turnovers.

Our “shooters” are struggling this season. Good chance for Aislin Malcolm next season – she’s a local incoming recruit who can shoot it — at least in HS…

      Go Pitt.

“Why he’s No. 5: Marino is regarded as arguably the best pure passer in league history. He led the NFL in passing yards five times and in touchdown passes on three occasions, doing so during an era where receivers and quarterbacks were not as protected by league rules. While he never won a Super Bowl, Marino guided the Dolphins to 10 postseason appearances and 147 regular season wins.”

  11. Speaking of stats – this one is amazing to me: during Kenny Pickett’s 5 years at Pitt, he attempted 1674 passes! Talk about valuable experience for a QB…

What led me to look that up was I was wondering how Slovis compares, experience-wise, with KP.

Slovis made 953 pass attempts over his career at USC. So he has valuable experience that practice just can’t replicate.

BTW, before this past season, KP had made 1177 pass attempts for our pass-happy Panthers…

    Thank goodness for spring football!

    Go Pitt.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. BTW, I’m a Nick Patti fan, but in his Pitt career, Nick has made 67 pass attempts.

Quite a gap with Mr. Slovis’ numbers…

      Go Pitt.

  12. That’s what Slovis has over Patti experience on the field. Also I really don’t think Patti will be at full strength for the spring drills. So it really is the Slovis job to lose at QB for Pitt. How will Patti respond after spring practice is still a big question in my mind for Pitt going forward. Having Beville and Yellen as the Pitt backup QB’s doesn’t give me any good vibes from where I’m sitting.

  14. I wonder how much attention recruiters pay to ratings? I think they spend most of their time looking at film, going to games and seeing these kids in person. Since Narduzzi found early on that he couldn’t close the best kids, he (his team) has got really good at evaluating the 3 stars and predicting their future potential.

Hopefully an ACC Championship will result in an uptick in talent level, but don’t make the mistake that kids being recruited by the top ten are going to consider Pitt.

Narduzzi took advantage of the extra year of eligibility, better than most. Two reasons, his players obviously like playing for him, and secondly, most were not good enough for the NFL.

Hopefully he can get a couple more last minute difference makers from the portal.

    1. Some really good points. Just add camps to the list. Pitt’s camp for rising juniors, seniors. Before Covid Pitt attended or co-sponsored camps in the south. I don’t have a clue if Pitt attends the recruiting site camps.

The “bump” will occur if Pitt has a good or very competitive 2022 season. A 7-5 or less season won’t do it. Syracuse had no bump after their 10-3 season as they reverted to their non-bowl norm.

I think you should also add Pitt (as a University), the Athletic Department, and the Life Skills program as reasons why Pitt doesn’t have the players heading to the TP.

  15. Great job Richard and thanks for taking the time.

Love how each star is broken down into sub-stars thus showing the difference inside ae 3* players. Although the lack of knowledge on a lot of players make up for it. IMO, a 5.5 3* equals a small town lightly known player.

Basketball?? I do not have enough time to waste on the hoop boys this year. Which is a shame on all counts.

You may remember that Pitt would get many commits immediately after these sessions were held. In fact, a defensive end prospect from Erie was offered by Chryst after the 2012 camp

Not sure if these camps will be reinstated

  20. I heard Zeise, who I highly respect, say yesterday that Pitt should give Capel another year…. All he needs is a point guard and shooting guard.

While that’s no small ask, what Pitt current player would actually start for any other ACC Team?? I’ll wait….

    Like

    1. If all we need is a point guard and a shooting guard, PZ must have been referring to the women’s team.

The men need a point guard and a couple forwards, don’t they? Besides better players at any position, that is…

      Go Pitt.

        1. In my opinion, Pitt will need at a minimum, these 3 pieces: a true PG, a forward/center type guy to replace Mo (& give Hugley rest), and a SF or 2G that can shoot/score (since neither Jeffress nor Santos panned out). I am not sure the order of priority, I guess I’d say a PG would be #1.

That said, although I think Capel will get another year, I don’t think he should get it if we have the money to buy him out.

  21. One more year for Capel is one last chance to mine the transfer portal and turn things around. Miami did it via the portal, and if Capel really is an ace recruiter he deserves one last shot to get it right. Another year like this year and the party’s over.

He was close to getting it back this year and used a couple portal players to get him over the hump. Pitt and Capel are not in that position and Felton in particular has never had that success on the court like 11 out of 13 years with 20 wins!

It’s fair to say that HCPN has made the best of coaching up his 3*s utilizing the years of experience that come with that ranking as these are not typically the players leaving after 3 years.

I may be off-base but I think Slovis is a shoe-in if he’s healthy as Patti has limited years remaining and his experience to date has been stunted by KP8. The key to Pitt’s 2022 season will be a successful running game and significant improvement in the back 7 on defense.

I’m particularly concerned about the CBs, I don’t see anyone with shutdown ability.

Even though Patti is a part-time QB he certainly isn’t good enough to be a ‘lock as Pitt’s QB1 in the 2022 season.

On the flip side Slovis IS experienced but sometimes when a starter has a decline in play enough to be unseated by a true FR the problem is above the shoulders, being mostly self confidence.
