  1. FSU is currently getting screwed by the officials at Duke. Somehow they are still in the game after about 3 bad calls in a row.

Rinse and replay next year again with Capel’s bad news bears.

The offense has no movement nor flow tonight.

And… it all starts a Femi! He’s being used and abused. Hope Capel gets us a real point guard next year.

This game was the first defeat of a P5 school this season for Pitt. All 4 losses are to P5 teams.

It’s also why I don’t trust Pickett to be a NFL QB. Until this year, when he was 2 years older than everyone, he was an average inconsistent QB.

  15. That was painful, our guards looked tired and got out hustled all night. Couldn’t guard, couldn’t shoot, turned the ball over. Burton had nothing, Femi looked lost and Horton is a one trick pony. Maybe the worst defensive effort all year.

    Like

  16. There was no energy tonight until the last 4 minutes. This team is certainly not good enough to win with half an effort. Sloppy ball handling. And you would think they would shoot better at home. Burton and Horton must shoot better if they are to have a chance.

Totally different look at UConn than Pitt regarding their hire of 4 years ago.

Capel has a sub .300 win percentage in league play. On top of all that, he is producing that record in what may be the weakest 4 year stretch the ACC has experienced in the past 50 years.

    1. UConn will do whatever it takes to win, including the school looking the other way. Also, smart people take care of the program whereas at Pitt it is a history of bad decision making or hiding behind academics.

There were successful coaches out there after Dixon left and Stallings was fired. The respective ADs performed terrible coaching searches. Heather is 0-2 with her men’s and women’s hires. Worst case should be a split, but this is Pitt.

Same school when hoops was successful the chancellor thought it would continue to roll just because so no need to further invest.

    1. Like I thought during the game, our guards looked lethargic, especially Burton, while their guards had energy and were flying all over the place. They were driving past them with ease and getting to the basket. A shame since Gueye was outstanding. They also put strong pressure on our guards who had no answer with poor shooting and turnovers.

  20. If there was ever a game that showed this staff stinks and won’t accomplish anything at Pitt, mark this Tech game as all the proof needed. I’m so glad that Capel, a former college guard, can’t recruit one or two who can actually put the ball in the hole.

The starting theee guards shot 4-25 last night and Femi still is prone to turnovers and bad decision making. Capel admitting the team was lethargic was a slap in the face to the fans.

  21. 17 fast break points for Tech last night! Most on Femi and Burton turnovers. Tech zone made Pitt “think” according to Capel. If you think on the basketball court you’re dead! But…. What else does that say about Pitt??

“They got back late Thursday night and we’re not ready to play. “ JC.

That’s the coaches job Mr 3 million $$$ Coach!!

Last but not least…. So you’re struggling on offense… that still gives you NO EXCUSE to totally abandon your defense!

    What a shame!

  22. No excuses for last night. It is the job of a coach to motivate and prepare a team to play each game to the best of its ability. Obviously, we were someplace else mentally. It was almost like we were playing The Citadel in game #1 (NOT FUNNY). The defense, did not exist in most of the game. Fundamental basketball WHAT IS THAT?? Shooting beyond DISGRACEFUL. Ball handling /turnovers a comedy of errors. Like most of us on this website, I am willing to bet that we had extremely high hopes for a solid Panther victory against a weak opponent (Tech is lousy). Weak opponent– WE WERE THE WEAK OPPONENT! I bleed PItt colors, however, after the debacle last night I really don’t care what happens the rest of the season. WE are going to need a miracle to find transfers like Mo for next year. Speaking of Mo his loss is going to put a sinkhole through the team… HL faces a huge $$$ buyout to say goodbye to Coach Capel///it ain’t gonna happen. 2022-2023 Season a Stallings disaster is coming SAD!

  23. This was a rare one I didn’t see, but from the comments above, what sticks out is a lack of movement on offense (which is what transformed us the last 2 games) and a lack of effort, both of which are related and tell the story for me. Obviously, an emotional letdown after the NC game, as was wisely pointed out above, but I agree, you’re getting paid $3M+, figure it out. You’re at home. Tired of excuses.

  24. It looked to me like our guards were worn out, not surprising after their mental and physical output at UNC.
Sometimes coaching can not overcome this, but guys that don’t like Capel are going to take their shots.

I remember a game when Villanova got run out of Fitzgerald but went on to win the NC. Rollie benched his first team, Capel doesn’t have that luxury. Funny guards going 4-25 is somehow due to Capel’s poor coaching and Capel’s honesty is somehow a slap in the face to fans. Give me a break.

      Let’s not overlook that fact.

  25. I am not putting all the blame on Capel, however, he certainly is responsible for not being able to recruit a talented team. We have an almost non-existant bench that can’t give our starters some time off the floor..
Gordon Conn I agree with you MOST of the time, but the handwriting is on the wall. Rollie had some fantastic teams and yes, they did lose some games, however, he was able to recruit talent a factor not
    existing at the Pete.

        1. Agreed, except, Hugley’s and Horton’s stupidity, Champ going Pro, Sibande’s injury and maybe Toney leaving. But overall recruiting has been underwhelming, and definitely not good enough.

  26. My argument wasn’t about talent it was about physical and mental exhaustion. While certainly not on the level of these guys I have experienced that when you have tired legs you don’t shoot very well. Athletes all have better and worse days. Tiger Woods didn’t always have his “A” game.
I have seen Femi and Burton play with much more energy than they had last night. All of the guards were struggling offensively and defensively. Coaching can only do so much.

  36. Dan, I am going to disagree with your earlier post today where you indicated that if you think in bball, you’re dead. The key is thinking first at what you are seeing and then knowing automatically what to do to beat a particular zone, man to man, without thinking.

I do end up where you started but started from a different perspective. That’s my point guard mentality. Recognition of what I am up against and then execution without thinking to beat what comes my way. Maybe part of the problem is recognition. The second part is in execution.

The third part is about self-pride. You have to wil yourself to be better than like talented opponents. Do i expect victory when you go into a gun battle with a squirt gun, no! When that happens, it is on your coach to get better weapons to equip you for victory. Looks like we have neither!

    1. You just defined what I truly meant. I was speaking as a coach who had my team well prepared for a 1-3-1 morphing zone. I would expect you, as my point guard not to hesitate, ( what I meant by thinking) as I had you well prepared. Capel ran basically his useless Flex offense against the Tech Zone. Players move a lot but the ball moves little. I always preferred Tom Davis’s Iowa Zone motion offense. It creates overloads and moves the ball quickly. I’m still pissed over last night!!

      1. You are the man, Dan! We see the same thing but from different lenses. Coach versus player. I don’t have the patience like you to coach! You would think by now that there is nothing new to prepare for as a collegiate coach. Can’t say that I have seen any innovation with offenses or defenses in quite some time on the basketball court, which leads me to my next point.

Why doesn’t Pitt apply full court pressure from the start of some games when it just isn’t expected? Rotate man to man, to 1-3-1, to 2-1-2, to man, etc.

I do hope there’s a package of plays for whoever the backup is. Seems to me that would work best with Patti coming in – like for inside the ten plays – adding more of a run threat…

But it would be great to have two pretty decent looking QBs available.

          Go Pitt.

  39. Ike, thanks.

As far as transfer QBs doing well for us I’d say we are 1 for 4. Peterman rocked, but Brown, George, jr and Ricky Town were not much good at all.

Remember this from PN when Town quit the team?…

Pat Narduzzi announced today that Ricky Town had left the team due issues stemming from the wildfires. News from Narduzzi: Backup QB Ricky Town, whose family had issues with the wild fires in California, has left the team. …”

Have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you if you are interested!

I’m hoping Patti can get the QB1 job and do well.

    1. George and Town were brought in for camp arms only, never threats to compete for the job.

They were better options for worst-case if injuries hit and only walk-ons were available.

The QB room needed something after Moosehead’s abysmal recruiting at the position and Narduzzi’s whiff on the Ohio kid.

  42. I’m shocked at how thin Pitt’s bench is. After seeing the statistics on bench scoring for the ACC, it is pretty clear that Capel missed on some players or they just haven’t developed. Also, it is hard to accept that the one constant Capel relies on, his team’s hard work and fighting spirit, disappeared against GT, when they should have been excited about extending the win streak to 4. In the back of my mind is whether or not there is more unreported conflict in the locker room.

    Like

    1. Yes, you have the starting 5, then you have Jeffress, EZ and Collier. No doubt they suffered a major letdown and GT beat them with their own medicine, suffocating defense, high energy and physical play.
They did turn it up but way to late. We seem to forget that four games earlier we were at the bottom.

I don’t think there is any conflict in the locker room or they wouldn’t have won two on the road in difficult places to win.

Pitt can only win when their guards play well. It will be interesting to see how they bounce back tonight against a much tougher team.

  43. Will Patti be able to compete in Spring practice? Is Slovis fully healed from his injuries? I guess we’ll find out soon. I don’t think our previous west coast guys have anything at all to do with how well Slovis performs. He has a much stronger body of work. I think Patti would be crazy to leave if he doesn’t win the job. Injuries happen as he well knows and he would be one hit away from playing. Most QB’s aren’t as tough as KP and he missed a few games during his career.

  44. Capel does not develop his bench at all. Every year he does the same thing. Shortens the bench to about six guys hurting the team. I call BS that Collier, Santos, etc. can’t give this team a few minutes here and there to rest the main scorers. Plus it develops them for the future. Capel is clueless on how to use his bench.

But on the other hand I remember scratching my head over Oladapo and Payton. (And you’d think Amadasun would be able to at least play 5 minutes by now…)

So we hit on Mo and Burton in the portal, we missed on Payton and Oladapo. We probably need to add at least 2 good players (a point guard and a forward or two) and that’s if we don’t lose any starters. I don’t like our chances…

Lots of talk about the congrats line post BBall games. I haven’t coached in 15 years but I’ve always thought it was about good sportsmanship, a lost art. Agree with Izzo’s rant today! We’ve cow-towed to D1 players in every way today. Is it too much to ask them to put their egos aside and pretend not to be selfish idiots for the post game line? Coach’s also?
I regularly listen to Stan Savron who is battling cancer and he was out yesterday. In his place was some A-hole named Wes Euler. His third sentence was “we won’t pay any attention to that school on Oakland Property.” Said in very Derogatory manor. He didn’t finish that sentence before I turned him off! Is he another WVUCC Alum like the guy who subs for MM?
