Because the old basketball thread is getting old.

Not a lot of news right now. Aaron Donald dominated last night as expected. James Conner scored the only Cardinals touchdown. So good for those two Pitt Men.

Are we going to get official word on the Offense Coordinator this week? The hubbub around Frank Cignetti seems to have come and gone…Someone has updated his Wikipedia page though, so it must mean that its happening. And then there is still the vacant WR coach position to fill…

Coaches ostensibly are on the recruiting trail. “Late” signing day is Feb 2nd, which is two weeks from tomorrow.

The men’s basketball team (7-10) faces a 10-7 UVA team tomorrow night, and the Cavs are 4-3 in conference. So maybe another chance for a win? Sure would be nice to see some momentum. https://pittsburghpanthers.com/sports/mens-basketball/schedule

Pitt Wrestling upset #6 Arizona state last week. They are 5-3 and host the ‘Hoos on Friday night. https://pittsburghpanthers.com/sports/wrestling/schedule

Despite a poor conference record of 1-5, the Women’s basketball team sports a 10-7 record and beat Wake Forest recently. They head to Blacksburg to take on Virginia Tech on Thursday.

And to wrap up our tour of Pitt Winter Sports, the Gymnastics team lost to Maryland 192.900 – 192.925 last Saturday. I don’t know anything about Gymnastics scoring but that seems like a close one. The Pitt Squad is 1-1 on the season. https://pittsburghpanthers.com/sports/womens-gymnastics/schedule

  1. Thanks Maestro..lots of subjects to BS. Just looked at the 15 finalists for the NFL HoF. Is Reuben Brown still eligible ? He was not one of the 15.

  2. News flush from the pottie portal. Henry Parrish, a one time Pitt commit, who signed with I think Ole Miss or Miss St., transferred to Miami. We will get to see him this coming year.

Pitt punter Andy Lee was right up there with player of the game honors for the Cardinals last night. Very impressive leg. Averaged over 48 yards per punt. Field flipper!

  4. Conner has really had a hard time staying healthy. Saw the rib pads last night.

Know a couple people who went through Hodgkin’s and both have had bone related issues as they got older. Wonder how much of his injuries come from his style of play and how much come from his overall health.

    1. his physique and style of running certainly has been altered, I’m sure some puposefully if not all

and of course many people get bone issues as they get older 😉 ,,,, I still am trying to continue getting older, maybe just a lot slower would be preferred 🙂

  5. Agree JoeL on frailty of bone structures after radiation. I think he runs a bit too upright which exposes the rib area and more direct blows to the knees. He did rush well for the 4 times he touched the ball. Thought he got dinged on his td run. AD had a good game, not great. Andy Lee played better than the other Pitt guys if I am being honest in my appraisal. He actually touched the ball 5 times, Conner 5 times and Donald had an assist on his 1/2 sack. Advantage, Lee.

I was really not impressed with the AZ qb. He played scared all game and jittery. Fired a screen pass off Conner for an Interception. That was the first nfl game I got to watch mostly in its entirety because I don’t like the messages. AS an example, the Rams had Be Love on their helmets, yet when the rams running back delivered a blow and the defender was in obvious discomfort (probably knocked out), the rb walked passed him and taunted him, delivering the “go to sleep” sign. That ain’t “be love” folks. I get that football is an emotional game, so maybe they should just stop with the messaging. It’s not congruent.

Way off topic – Najee Harris should not have been picked by the Stillers during first round. Nice player but the NFL game is built on vision, patience, quickness, speed and power. Power being the last because every player is strong.

  6. I will try this one more time.
It’s been a long time since I posted, a very complicated time, but watching (and reading) the Pitt situation has allowed me, I believe, to comment with a deeper appreciation of what has occurred the past couple of months, so here goes:
    1) I didn’t see much if any of the UVa or Wake games, as I said, complicated, so I don’t feel I can comment too much. From reading the posts I see both types of fans, those who get into a negative vibe, and those who puff there chests out when we win. Seems like a lot of knee jerk reactions on both sides, neither were right or wrong, but certainly getting tribal.Shows me we all need to be a little more understanding of others positions.
    2) Pitt athletics took a backseat for awhile, it allowed me to reflect and then appreciate what this year meant. I’m as happy as anyone to have been wrong, as the Duzz finally broke the 5 loss threshold. The criticism following WMU game was justified, as was the joy of winning the ACC. Quite the journey.
    3) What little I saw leads me to believe Comcast was right not wanting the ACC network, man it’s bad on so very many levels.
    4) I read some heavy duty criticism of announcers on the Peach Bowl. From what I saw they were fair, giving us props early, then gushing over MSU when the tide turned. I didn’t like it, but heck, they have to give the other guys credit too, and hyperbole is good for the ratings, so I was OK with it.
    5) I’ll disagree with Reed and some others here. I think this season shows the importance of a softer OOC schedule. Heck, we’re gonna drop a game there anyhow, but let’s not get beat up and lose 2 or more. This isn’t like when we were independent, taking on all comers. Winning generates buzz. I can’t tell you how many strangers saw me wearing my Pitt cap and just said H2P, or good luck, or asked what I thought about the game or players. I was stunned. And not a Nitter to be found. I thought, this is what it must be like in SEC country. Really good feeling. So getting off to a good start without getting beat up is crucial in my opinion.
    6) As far as the bowl game, the better team lost. If either qb plays the full game it’s a pretty easy win, and anyone who is unbiased saw that. I did not have a problem with KPs decision, although I’d have much rather seen him one more time. The scary injury by the Miss qb should remind everyone how quickly it could end. Personally, I’m grateful for the time he gave us, pretty much responsible for lifting a program up. ( well, that’s my take anyhow).
    7) I wrote this in my lost post earlier but I felt Beville and the OC were not up to the task next year. One is gone, and I wouldn’t be shocked if the other left following spring ball.
    8) Next year is crucial, any team can get lucky one year, but to change national perc for both recruits and media as well as public you need to string a few years together. Getting the right pieces put in the right places . Let’s see how it shapes up. One thing, the good old boys that cover the ACC will not, I repeat, not, give us preseason props. Just won’t happen.
    9) On a personal note, thanks to,all who write and comment on this site, it made a tough time easier. Sincerely.

Perhaps you already know this but if you go to YouTube, you can watch either the complete or condensed UVA and WF games. Both worth watching.

      4) Regarding your comment about the announcing – I just think some of the folks who do our games aren’t that good, no matter who they may favor. Some just try too hard. RGIII for instance would be a lot better if he cut back on some of the over the top stuff and explain what he is seeing on the field – and he has some good insight there.

Been a lot of turnover at ESPN since they went through some serious restructuring a few years back and the folks that are replacing the talent that was let go or left just isn’t at the same level – but hey, Im sure Disney/ABC/ESPN is saving money. And the games where the play by play and color guys are WFH is noticeably different. Its better when they are in person and together.

      8) Excellent points!

      1. See … I know football. I don’t need someone telling me what I see. I prefer announcers who don’t even talk about the game or just have fun calling the game. Here are some of his NFL combine notes:

Great size with the demeanor for the game.
    Runs decisively and with urgency.
    Rarely fumbles.
Able to gather and cut on short notice.
Downhill wiggle to slalom around bodies.
    Change of direction is crisp.
Has tools to handle inside/outside duties.
Follows and bursts to daylight off of lead blocks.
Plus balance to keep run on track through first contact.
Talent as route runner and pass catcher was on full display in 2020.
Soft hands with above-average ball skills.
Willing and able in pass protection.

Pretty sure NFL scouts know more than anyone on the POV.

    2. Steeler scouts passed on Dan Marino when they knew Bradshaw was washed up and instead drafted a Mexican lineman with a drinking problem.

They also drafted Terrell Edmunds in the 1st round when every draft magazine had him listed as a 4th -5th round selection. They also gave Mason Rudolph a 1st round grade. Need I go on?

      1. Time out. Pointing out that Gabe Rivera was Hispanic/Mexican is of what relevance Jackagain? While ignoring his ethnicity, I’ll note that he was a consensus All American and Southwestern Conference Defensive POY. Meanwhile, Marino had a reported substance issue and had a subpar Senior year. And the Steelers have had far more hits than misses as evidenced by their having 3 losing seasons in 30 years. Ask the Browns or Bengals if they’d sign up for the Steelers personnel decisions during that time period.

          1. Anthony Munoz is widely regarded as one of the best lineman of all time, perhaps the best. Tony Gonzalez? Maybe the best tight end ever. Your ignorance and prejudice is appalling. Not to mention that it is irresponsible to say Gabe Rivera had a drinking problem. He clearly made a terrible mistake by getting behind the wheel on a rainy night after having too many beers. To me, that is evidence of a judgment problem. I’m not sure we know the extent of any drinking problem he did or did not have.

          2. Pittsburgh had a QB, Bradshaw. How was he washed up after tying for the league lead with 17 TD passes in 1982? He went and had elbow surgery unbeknownst to the Steelers in the off-season then threw 500 passes at minicamp and permanently damaged his elbow.

Marino stunk his senior year and that was on him. Not Foge, his teammates.

The Steelers came close to still drafting Marino but why would they when Terry was playing 3-4 more seasons?

            Like

      2. The Steelers had already drafted Mark Malone with a #1 pick in 1980. At the time Marino was available, Malone’s prospects were still a bit bright.

As for your description of Gabe Rivera, it’s tone deaf at best.

    3. I would disagree with the last sentence, just sayin. I don’t disagree with the scouting notes necessarily. His position didn’t help the Steelers this year in my opinion and won’t going forward. I didn’t say he is a bad player.

My opinion he was not a first rounder. He will get yards, great. He is not a game changer and a 1st rounder should have been used differently. We were not a running back away from super bowl. Steelers did not belong in playoff as qb couldn’t throw the ball 40 yards and was very slow, line was awful and defense is very average except for Heyward, Watt and Fitzpatrick.

Najee is good as I said. His body took three years of hits this year and that will haunt him in a couple years when he is on his second contract. Running backs are just not a priority in the pro game.

  9. JoeKnew … great write up … and I hope everything is okay, or at least improving

I didn’t get any of the negative vibes from the broadcasters on the Pitt – MSU game. I thought they were fine. Absolutely agree with the easier OOC schedule. Anything contrary to that is just setting Pitt up to fail. Pitt has to put themselves in a position to succeed. If we start winning 11/12 games consistently then you can add higher profile opponents … the focus should be on consistency not strength of schedule.

The sport is shifting and it’s happening rapidly. It’s imperative that Pitt stays in tune with how the landscape is changing. Don’t make things harder than they have to be. I love the emphasis on the portal. The portal is changing recruiting and it’s happening pretty quickly. Why take a kid you have to develop and integrate into the program when you can take a more mature and experienced kid?

    1. Totally agree Tossing on the necessity of an easier OCC schedule. Playing WVU, Tenn, ND, and Cincy in the coming years is a big mistake for our overall record, national ranking, fan interest, and bowl positioning.

I’m 37 years old so I was not alive during the glory years of 80, 81, and 82, but after consulting with Wikipeidia, the schedules don’t look that hard. I know we were an independent then, but whoever booked the schedules knew what they were doing…manageable, not too easy, not hard…a set up for success.

In 1980, we only played three ranked teams and had some easy opponents like Louisville, Kansas, and Temple.

In 1981, we only played two ranked teams in the regular season and had doormats of the 80’s like Cincy, Rutgers, Temple, and Army. Easy…no wonder we were 11 and 1.

In 1982, we played four ranked teams in the regular season which is high, but again Temple, Rutgers, Louisville, and Army.

In the ACC depending on the year, Miami, VA Tech, UVA, UNC, and our cross over opponent may be ranked. A soft non-con schedule helps keep the record high and healthy.

Wrote Steve P about this as well. Pitt athletic department can be its worst enemy and it is when you schedule difficult OOC. Talked to a D1 head coach this afternoon for awhile and we talked about the importance of an easy OOC schedule to gain experience, more practice, gelling lines, coaches, players and student life. Refreshing. Worried about new Constitution.

          1. No. Only one game in OOC should be scheduled against like competition or a stretch game. Minimum 3-1 each year. The year you go 4-0 OOC should put you in the discussion of top 10-15 with a 6-2 ACC record. Go 7-1 in ACC and you are looking at ACC Championship and with a win, should make the playoff conversation at 12-1.

        1. Got it. It is an interesting debate and I see your point for sure. The AD’s I know believe 3 wins against inferior competition and one game against the same type of team or a stretch game. At minimum, Pitt should be 4-4 in ACC play, especially with Duke and Syracuse each year. It is a standard practice to support the team through the schedule practice. Only Pitt AD’s feel they are smarter until this last year…but…we go back to a more difficult schedule next year.

If everyone comes back who is eligible, then I think he has only one available scholarship. If a top high school player falls into his lap fine, but it makes sense to play out this year and see what his most dire need is, and then hit the portal for a player to fill that need.

I don’t think there is a concerted effort to push out chests here just like no one shouted from the mountains how great Narduzzi is or like the few who love to tell us all how lousy Narduzzi is and how he had zero chance of ever having a ten win season forced upon us. For me it was all about continuity from a coach that showed enough promise to take a chance on.

Izzy could be PITTs next great running back

  20. Well, a “better team” would have had the new QB1 and QB2 ready to fill in when the Real QB1 decides to bag out on his team.

Look, there is no limit on numbers of practices a team can have before a bowl game so in the 24 days between WF and MSU…and a full two weeks after Pickett quit the team… Pitt could have gotten both kids more ready.

How many snaps do you think Belvill had during that time period? Minimum probably…

    I wish Pitt fans would:

Quit saying the better team lost the bowl game. A ‘better team’s’ talent goes past the first string kids folks.

Doing that is pure excuse making. If you want to lay blame for the loss with that way of thinking then lay it right at Pickett’s feet.

Counting how many losses we have had in the past when losing by a TD or less (more often a FG or less). Do we really believe that doesn’t happen to other teams also?

Blaming the Refs for anything that happens, especially saying the Refs are “crooked”. If you truly believe that then why in hell do you watch any football games at all? Seriously, why? Again, ultimate excuse making.

Hopefully, he’s okay. But, again, you probably miss the senior bowl. Both injuries also put you at risk for the combine and pro days. It’s absurd to ask someone to risk it all for an exhibition game that has no bearing on the outcome of the season.

Paul Ziese used to openly laugh at the commenters on his blog about getting the backup QB playing time. He’ll get playing time when he gets playing time. Lol. Kids get better reps in practice against their own defense than going into blowouts.

I find it amusing that some people just can’t enjoy the great season that Pitt had … that Kenny Pickett had. If people want to hold grudges … I guess that’s their choice. I can’t wrap my head around it but I guess enjoy.

Pitt moved from 12 to 13 and Michigan State went from 10 to 9. Such an important game. The ramification and stakes were so high. Kenny should have definitely put his NFL career on the line to go from 12 to 11 in the rankings. What a jerk.

    1. Can’t agree on one of your points…Final Rankings do matter…The higher you finish in the rankings, the better your chances are of getting a decent preseason ranking the next year. The higher you start in the rankings at the beginning of a season, the better chance you have of competing for a playoff spot if you have a successful season.

      1. Pitt’s preseason ranking is not affected by this season’s finish. Pickett leaving was going to factor into it regardless. The rankings don’t matter until the first playoff ranking in late October. What you’re ranked in August has no affect. Even then, you still have to win your conference… unless you’re in the SEC.

  22. Richard – I had a heart catheterization but it was over 10 years ago after a heart attack. Had to have open-heart bypass surgery but over 10 years later here I am still ticking. (And that allowed me to live long enough to enjoy this past Pitt football season! 😊)

I guess the stent procedures are much better now in the event you do have any issues. Hoping for the best for you.

  23. It appears that the rumors of Frank Cignetti becoming Pitt’s new O.C. were a tad premature. I am starting to believe the rumors were about as true as Dan Fisher becoming the new Penn State Women’s Volleyball coach. I wonder who really is going to be the next O.C. Anyone want to start a new rumor?
