  3. Hey – I think Pickett is a great player and did very well for us. I’m sure he’s a decent kid with good intentions. I just disagree with his decision…and will change my opinion of him totally if he bags on the bowl game but plays in the Senior Bowl.

That then would a sharp stick in the eyes of his teammates IMO.

That said I hope he finds love, peace and happiness in his future…because Karma sometimes can be a bitch.

Go Pitt BB and Panthers But please wait until the season is over before you Opt Out on Pitt and Coach Capel. Because and let’s be honest, you probably won’t be starters on any other team…

    1. Kenny’s initial decision was to play in the bowl game (which is more or less a high profile exhibition game). Then his “agent” and his parents and probably his coach, all had him consider what the risks were. Those risks probably amounted to $5-10 million dollars should he suffer a major injury.
The solution would be for the college to underwrite a short term insurance policy that would cover a certain amount of dollars should that injury occur.

Also, I’m not sure how opting out of one game at the end of 5 years is any worse than leaving college after two years to go to the NFL (as in Larry Fitzgerald, one of the best human being ever to son a football uniform, IMO.

I can’t comment on todays game or any player because I really haven’t watched.

The great St. John’s coach, Joe Lapchick visited my high school gym many times and tried to recruit our super star player, Billy Cunningham (older POV’ers will know him well). Louie Carnesecca (the sweater) was also a great Johnnies coach and watching Pitt play the school from Queens in the Garden in fantastic Big East games was basketball heaven!!

The Panthers hung in against a weakened St. John’s team minus Champagnie, but they didn’t fold!!
Pitt turnovers and ball-handling drive ME KRAZEE, but a win is a win is a win especially when it happens in the GREAT Madison Square Garden…..boy oh boy do I miss the Big East!

Players talk about him being THE Leader in the locker-room. If true, wish we would see that translate to a more TAKE-CHARGE attitude on the floor with a notch or two higher on the “Sense of Urgency” scale.

I agree that your #2 ranking in Pennsylvania basketball HS has not transferred to ACC basketball YET. But You are not an idiot. Your 4.0 GPA Erie McDowell HS and high SAT score earned you offers to Stanford and Vanderbilt which were as much academic as basketball offers.

I hope your mother, who is a Yale Medical School educated obstetrician doesn’t read these slanders on her son’s intelligence.

    1. Did you read the word “maybe” in my comment?

Jeffries has made two egregious mistakes an 8th grade rec player wouldn’t make. One cost Pitt the UVA game and today he committed a three point foul on a Johnnie’s player with 1 second on the clock in a tie game with time running out. It could have cost Pitt another game.

Sorry you took it so personally. Mine was not the only comment.

        1. I’ll back basketball Dan on this one. Jeffress made a couple of mistakes. First, he had a distinct height and reach advantage over the offensive player and should have known that. Second he left his feet jumping towards the offensive player. Third he didn’t understand the meaning of verticality. Had he been in proper position and jumped straight up, the St. John’s player cannot draw a 3 point foul by jumping into him due to the rule of defensive verticality. Call him an idiot or call him stupid or call him maybe an idiot or maybe stupid, doesn’t necessarily mean he is not book smart. Basketball smart is another thing altogether. I hope I explained the difference in a manner that is acceptable to those here. That’s my interpretation of the exchange as I saw it. No harm, no foul.

Some very smart book people have zero common sense. And some very dumb people book wise, do very well outside of academia. Some are in the middle. Feel free to call me names, i’m 40. lol.

Luckily, their guy didn’t make all the freebies or we would have been in deep trouble. Double lucky that their coach was an idiot by not pressuring Burton and allowing him to get the inbounds pass and dribble the entire length of the floor for a pull up fake and make deuce. Everyone knows Burton is taking the shot, even the savant indicated same before it happened. Look, he had the hot hand and played in control most of the game. He was our only option. Gotta call em like you see em. Guru Dan scored! I really wish there was a dislike button for my comments!!

    1. Pitt only signed 12 players, but the quality is there. Two good O-linemen, two strong defensive ends, Fitzsimmons at defensive tackle. Several of the signees won state championships. Narduzzi thinks the WR, Copeland, is going to play as a true freshman. Some speed at RB from Tampa and the WR from Texas.

I’m still hoping Pitt can flip Jackson Brown from Cal.

  35. Just finished reading “Recruiting Experts” post of Saturday. A lot of interesting thoughts.

It made me think back to almost a year ago – when KP had no bowl game or Sr Bowl invite to consider. He was considering the NFL,, and as I recall he was “projected” to be the 6th QB chosen in the draft. And so he began consulting.

Although I wasn’t privy to all conversation, I never heard that Peyton (or anyone else, for that matter) advised him to come back to win a championship; or to win the Peach Bowl. It was all about The Benjamin’s- risks be damned.

And so, here we are 1 year later, and nothing has changed – it’s still about The Benjamin’s. (He is consistant!)

    “moNEY, not we”!

  38. One of the most important pieces of going to a bowl game is the added practices and development. No bowl, less time to practice. I don’t believe any athlete takes to the field not wanting to win Not going to buy that argument at all. From rec league, to beer league, to pro sports. You lace up the shoes, you want to win.

LAtest example, tiger woods. Tiger and son playing in an exhibition match where it was supposed to be fun. Tiger had fun. Tiger competed and so did tiger jr. They were grinding to the point that Tiger risked great injury as he amped up his game to try to win. Exhibition, yes, kind of. Competitors compete. We know no other way.

  40. Pitt women basketballers got stomped by No. 21 ND this afternoon at ND. Think it was like 85-59.

Pitt has two big problems. First is turnovers. Pitt had 27 to ND’s 12. Way too many possessions given away.

Second problem are offensive dry spells. They can go 4 or 5 minutes struggling to score and just let the game get away from them.

Course these two things are related.

Interesting that ND’s two best players appear to be freshman. How’s this for the ND freshman PG’s line:
    8-15 shooting
    3-7 from three
    6 rebounds
    11 assists
    6 steals
    1 turnover

And frankly, some of us (myself included) do not know the details of what happened to Horton. Yes, he was drunk and punched someone and should be held accountable, but was the officer in uniform? Did he realize he was punching an officer of the law? If so, then I don’t want him back, period. But this is more than about just basketball, and I’d like to see Horton get another chance even if its elsewhere, especially if this is a first offense. I’m not sure how much it matters to Capel at this point, heck he has not brought in a single recruit for next year, which makes one wonder, eh?

    1. It is a rumor, but a strong one at that from the folk I know close to the program. Slovis is also from the state of Arizona and rumored to Arizona or Arizona State. So there is much competition in the rumor mill.

On a side note, former USC OC Graham Harrell is looking for a job and in the similar rumor mills, Slovis is projected to go where Harrell lands.

So, logic has me thinking, since Duzz told us the OC won’t be announced until January, and Slovis is to announce in the next day or two…wait their is no logic to these rumors that make sense.

Watch his film – he’d throw a nice ball to Addison, Wayne and Blue Mountain Bart.

They couldn’t shoot either, much like recent Pitt bball editions. (must be a Pitt thing)

They did play the 2-1-2 trap though and Carlton Neverson and Sammy Ellis were pretty good on the wings, while Sam Clancy was a rebounding machine, man-child. Who, while never playing football at Pitt, became an all-pro DE for the Seahawks in the NFL.

Last couple years of the old Eastern 8 and some great Eastern 8 tourney games at the Civic Arena.
Of which Pitt won, one year and advanced to the Big Dance.

    2. I loved going to the Field House for Pitt hoops. As soon as you walked you were engulfed by the intense popcorn smell and paint.

  52. Oh the one guy who could shoot…who came a little later…..was Clyde Vaughan, you’re Clyde. Had he played with the 3 point rule, he would have probably avg’d 5-10 pts per game higher. As it was, he became Pitt’s all-time leading scorer and still is #2, only eclipsed by Charles Smith by 12 points. Vaughan also led the BigEast in scoring in Pitt’s 1st or 2nd year in the conf.

Just a great perimeter shooter, especially compared to the bricklayers of today.

    1. I was planning to re-watch the entire season on YouTube TV over the holidays but Friday night all the games vanished.

      1. You Tube opted-out on Pitt Football.

Try the MAC Network to catch a rerun of the WMU game. We play them at their home field next season without KP8, by the way.

Do any other P5 teams play away games with the MAC?
