Combo Game Day Thread – Pitt Women’s Volleyball and Men’s Basketball

In a rematch. it is #1 Louisville vs. #3 Pitt. The game is scheduled for 5:00 PM on the ACC network.

At 8;00 PM, Pitt’s men’s basketball takes on Vanderbilt. This game is also on the ACC network.

    LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., (Nov. 24, 2021) – From childhood, University of Pittsburgh wide receiver Tre Tipton had it rough, growing up amid financial instability, food insecurity and family tragedies, which often left him depressed.

    But, thanks to a tenacious spirit, Tifton managed to pull himself out of “the darkness’’ and is now a vocal mental health advocate, earning him the prestigious 2021 Disney Spirit Award, given annually to the most inspiring figure in college football.

    “It is a humbling honor to be this year’s recipient of the Disney Spirit Award,” Tipton said. “This recognition has been given to so many incredible people over the years, including my former Pitt teammate James Conner. I believe the challenges I’ve faced have come for reasons greater than myself. It’s my goal to use those experiences to help others who are enduring the same difficulties. You don’t need to go through it alone. Working together, we can change lives and save lives.”

    Tipton will be presented with the coveted Disney Spirit Award by Disney Sports Vice President Faron Kelley at The Home Depot College Football Awards on Dec. 9. The two-hour show is hosted by Rece Davis along with analysts Dusty Dvoracek and Desmond Howard, and reporter Jen Lada.

    The show will be a stark contrast to Tipton’s surroundings more than a decade ago, when growing up outside Pittsburgh. There, his living conditions were unstable and he struggled to deal with one family tragedy after another, as well as four season-ending injuries at Pitt. That eventually led to multiple suicide attempts and turned a traditional four-year college football experience for him into what is now his seventh year.

    But displaying the kind of internal fortitude that earned him this year’s Disney Spirit Award, Tipton eventually committed to seeking the help that he needed for his mental wellness as well as his physical health. And he’s helping to rescue others fighting similar demons with L.O.V.E. — Living Out Victoriously Everyday, a nonprofit organization he launched with a classmate aimed at providing mental health support for fellow students on campus and beyond. Tipton also does motivational speaking about mental health around campus, at his old high school and the surrounding community.

    “We created the Disney Spirit Award to honor and recognize precisely the kind of indomitable spirit that Tre has shown in turning back from the dark places in the human mind,’’ Kelley said, “and his passion around helping others struggling with similar mental health issues is inspiring and likely helping to save lives too. We couldn’t think of a more deserving honoree this year.’’

    Tipton is one of 26 winners of the award which was first given in 1996 to Rossville High School’s Daniel Huffman. Since then, prominent college football figures such as Tim Tebow (University of Florida) and Mark Herzlich (Boston College) have received the coveted award. He is the second Pitt player to receive the award, joining former Pitt running back James Conner (2016).

  7. Louisville has no weaknesses that I can see. And they are taller than we are. Our girls are battling them though. Will be good for getting us ready for the tourney.

    Btw, I have 4 soccer players behind me. Cute and funny. Too bad I don’t speak French

  8. Louisville wins 3-1 and remains unbeaten while Pitt suffers it’s 3rd loss of the season.

    Many service errors by Pitt and a really bad call by the line judge that was reviewed and still called wrong.

    1. Pitt’s freshman Rachel Fairbanks played very well in the portion of the match she played. She is definitely going to be are 2nd 6 rotation player next year along with Vazquez Gomez. Fairbanks both served and was scoring kills when she was at the net. We also had another freshman, Emmy Klika, playing libero in the 3rd and 4th set for additional defense. It is good to see we have some talent in the freshman!

      Pitt needs to get two players healthy if we are going to make a run. Kayla Lund and Jordan Lockwood are desperately needed for any matches past the first round of the tournament. Kayla’s injury, with all that wrapping around her waist, does not bode well for a quick recovery. Jordan came in the match briefly in the fourth set.

      As Annie pointed out, Louisville is really, really good. Hopefully they will be on the other side of the bracket from Pitt. Pitt may not get a regional seed now. It will be up to the committee’s whims. The loss should not hurt in our RPI rating. We may lose a place in the rankings. The NCAA tournament selection show will be on ESPNU at 8:30 PM on Sunday, Nov. 28th.

      the line official that called it is wasn’t looking at the ball whatsoever when you watch the replays, NEVER looked down at the line or ball and as EE says, definitely out and the replay idiot gets it wrong and doesn’t overturn

    1. Some of our veteran vb players seem to be in slumps lately. I hope they snap out of it soon!

      Rachel Fairbanks did play great tonight. She is actually a setter, so having her be able to hit AND set is a big advantage. She can hit from the front line and set from the back.

  10. Wishful thinking is all that I can say about anyone who thinks Pitt BB has a good chance to win any game this year. Will they actually be favored in any ACC game this season?
