  3. You might be a Mountaineer if you’re about to watch your team throttle lowly Pitt by 40 points.
Oh, how far we have fallen.
Remember when we won most of our games?
Remember when we were the Splash at the Big East Tournament?
Remember when not only was The Big Dance a given each year, but we complained how we were always screwed by the seeding committee?
Now we lose to the likes of the Citadel and St. Francis, and no high school kids want to play for us.
Heather, can you hear me in your bunker?

  6. Watch the end of the Bob Huggins Pitt preview press conference. They are talking transfers and the portal.

Paraphrasing Huggins…the little white kid that Pitt had that knocked down shots against us called me and ask to come here, I said to him, come on man. Five schools in five years, is that a good education, how’s that kid going to graduate?

Pitt doing a good job switching defenses 2-3 zone to man. Playing with guards is suicide for Pitt. Femi with that high dribble already with 3 turnovers. Yes Pitt will get mugged all night. WVCC getting clean looks Pitt contested on every shot.

  9. Since Pitt will not win many games, I’m going to concentrate on fundamentals. For our guard to dribble up floor and then stop, turn his back, head down breaks about every rule ever taught.

    1. lol dan, what I saw made me almost hurl, not hurley. The scenario was the same as you described…. but when he turned, he didn’t protect the ball with his body and the dribble could have been an easy steal. Fundamentals of ball protection whilst dribbling. Always enjoy me some good analytics!

Doesn’t look like Jeffress built up or out his body this offseason. Hugley looks hugely. The portal center pick-up, Manute Bol Gueye looks to be about 6’9″ 165 pounds. He had some nice moves and appears to be able to handle the ball a bit. So are we going for strength…..or conditioning?

  13. Pitt women’s volleyball had a tougher than expected match with the Orange. Pitt wins in 5 sets. Coach Fisher tried to rest Kylee Levers, one of our starting setters. Unfortunately she had to play in the 5th set. Lexis Akeo, our other usual setter, had some problems with the refs being called several times for double hits on her sets. Pitt women’s volleyball is off the rest of the weekend. Next weekend they travel to Georgia Tech on Friday and then to Clemson on Sunday.

    1. John, the passing was not very good, hence the setting was not either. I told my hubby I thought coach wanted to see how his 2 setters for next year would do. He thought I was crazy and said maybe she was hurt. When I saw Kylee playing set 5 I was glad to see her not hurt, but man that was just too close.

I did a google search of Pitt vb commitments for 2022 and 1 name came up- Dillyn Griffin from Orange Count, Calif. She’s a libero. While I realize that we have a couple freshmen redshirts, I thought we would have added a couple hitters. Knowing we are losing Ndee and Lund scares me. Based on my limited knowledge of the roster capabilities (any transfers??), I’m expecting next year will be a rebuilding year. We need to get some players with height. We always seem undersized.

I watched the Louisville-Georgia Tech match tonight. If we play like we did tonight against them, I expect another 2 losses. Not the way to end the season heading into the NCAAs. I hope we clean up our serving. It is frustrating watching them make so many unforced errors.

      1. I agree that Coach Fisher wanted to see next year’s setters in ACC action. Unfortunately Syracuse finally started playing up to their potential in the 3rd and 4th sets.

Thanks for the info on the libero, Dillyn Griffin. I wonder why Pitt’s social media has not acknowledged her signing yet?

I think we can beat Georgia Tech next Friday. Hopefully Jordan Lockwood will be available and 100%. She did not play yesterday after playing against American. Hopefully that was just due to an abundance of caution.

Next year Vazquez Gomez will replace Lund in the lineup. She will be one of the 6 rotation players. Member-Meneh has been the 2nd 6 rotation player this year but it looks like Cat Flood is the only bench player who has the potential to do that next year. Guewe Diouf, an all Big 12 player in her freshman year at Oklahoma (2020), originally was going to transfer to Pitt. She is a 5′ 11″ OH from France. She got hurt at the end of her freshman year. Instead of coming to Pitt she went back to France and is playing for her club team. I am hoping she will recommit to Pitt. She decided to go back to France after Serena Gray transferred. This would indicate to me that Serena took her spot. If we get Diouf then we may be better than you think next year.

  17. OT – Pitt women’s BB team won tonight, but not without a scare. Lafayette made 9 of 22 three pointers which brought them back from being way down. Late in the 4th Q they had the ball with a shot to take the lead. Pitt went on to hold them scoreless over the last 2+ minutes and won by 8 or so.

Lafayette had a freshman playing in her first college game and she went 5 of 6 from 3. Pretty impressive.

Rita, Pitt’s 6-4 Junior center, is coming along. Tonight she was 11 for 15 with 13 boards. Jayla Everett was 9 for 17, but 1-5 from 3. Pitt overall was only 3 for 15 from 3.

Amber Brown had a poor shooting night at 1-7, but she contributed with 10 rebounds and 5 assists.

A good game to learn from. They likely lose this game last season…

    Go Pitt.

  18. I would not be reserving those final four tickets quite yet if I were a hoopie fan…Pitt had a higher shooting percentage, including from 3, more FT attempts and a higher FT percentage, more rebounds, and an equal number of assists…The obvious major flaw in Pitt’s game tonight was turnovers. When you lose 32 possessions to TOs it’s not going to be a good day at the arena. That was hard to watch. Also, I don’t think it’s possible to be competitive in today’s NCAA taking just 6 three-point shots in a game.

  19. I read an article in the Tribune Review this morning that said next Saturday, Nov 20th, is the Pittsburgh Christmas Light Up Night, beginning at 4 PM. I have never attended this event. Does anyone have a feel for whether Light Up Night is likely to impact traffic and parking for the Pitt-UVA game?

    Like

  20. Let’s hope they don’t make the VA game a night game. Although it would look good on TV.
A 3:30 game would be very cool on National TV. A night game could affect attendance negatively.
Light up night is a big deal and will affect traffic and parking, also hotel availability and pricing.
I think this is the first time it will be Saturday, traditionally on Friday. So no rush hour traffic, anyway.

  21. Is 32 turnovers some kind of record? Other than that they didn’t play badly, lol
It is something that can be corrected to some extent since they haven’t played together
for very long. X was a turnover machine and didn’t get better. Hopefully Femi lowers that dribble.

  22. Very weird watching a completely different group of players from one year to the next. Well, besides Femi. College basketball is forever ruined with the transfer free for all.

    Today’s positive spin…😀

Hugley is going to be very good.
Jeffress will eventually be a double double guy. He’s just so young it will take time.
Dan Oladapo was a nice surprise. Amazing he could score inside at 6’7” more easily than Terrell Brown ever could. He isn’t ideal for tons of minutes but to spell Hugley here and there and he will actually get some buckets.
Capel needs to keep emptying his bench. Throw it all at the wall and see what sticks. Collier, Santos, Payton.

  25. Pitt Coach Pat Narduzzi Postgame Transcript (North Carolina)
    November 11, 2021

COACH NARDUZZI: What a ball game, huh? You guys sleeping in here or what? I’m so happy for those guys in that locker room. Veterans Day. Great win. Want to thank all the veterans out there across the country. Everybody that protects this country and fights for us, you know. Our kids fought hard just like they have fought and appreciate all the efforts today.

What do you say? I talked to our defense today. We had a 30-minute meeting over in the Duratz (facility). And after (defensive coordinator Randy) Bates got done I said, ‘Everybody’s talking about offense. You win championships with defense.’ That was a championship effort today by our defense. Three fourth-down stops. We turned the ball over late. Forced them to a field goal.

There was talk about letting them score and we would go down and score. I was, like, I can’t do that. We’re going to stop them here, but when they got it down to, I think, the 1.

Just incredible efforts by a bunch of guys. M.J. Devonshire with the finishing touch, and I think Cam puts the pressure on the quarterback at that time. Our kids were fresh. That was part of the plan.

We didn’t practice much this week. We had to keep them fresh and I got that from Coach Tomlin. I appreciate Coach Tomlin and how they deal with it in the NFL. It’s nice to have neighbors like that.

We took it easy. We had a Sunday jog through. We had a Monday walk through, which is a Tuesday and Wednesday practice. And then we played fast on Tuesday which was our perfect Thursday practice. I thought our kids’ legs were fresh. To me that was critical to winning the game today.

Our kids played — I don’t think they want to practice anymore. I think they just want to walk through, jog through and get ready to go.

    Q. What was the big change in the second half when your offense had trouble?

COACH NARDUZZI: You know what, I don’t know. I don’t know what it was. We’ll watch the tape and find out. I didn’t see any adjustments out of them defensively. They played a lot of different coverages, trying to confuse people. We’ll look at the tape and find out.

But they did a nice job in the second half and that happens sometimes. Great teams find ways to win it in a different way. That’s what our kids did today.

    Q. Was it frustrating that you couldn’t run the ball?

COACH NARDUZZI: They couldn’t run the ball either. I don’t know what we rushed for. Hey, that sometimes happens. You can’t get frustrated. You give them credit. They’ve got a bunch of good football players over there, too. They’ve got a bunch of four- and five-star guys, top-10 recruiting classes. And it just didn’t look like it today, the way Pitt played.

    Q. You had some key stops on fourth down.

COACH NARDUZZI: I think we’re number one fourth-down defense in the country. I think people should probably just punt or do something else. Our kids, again, give the defense credit. Give our players credit, our coaches credit. They’ve done a great job all year long. And they did it again today.

Those are some huge stops. And, again, they played lights out in the first half. I counted four or five three-and-outs early, maybe out of the first six or seven series. They did some stuff in the second half offensively. Started moving the tight end around. Couldn’t get a bead where the tight end was at. I don’t know if that’s something they made adjustments at halftime or not. But they certainly were moving around because we had them bound up pretty good early.

    Q. Devonshire, you touched on it, coming in hasn’t had the impact as he would like to have. How big is it for that moment, the walk-off interception there?

COACH NARDUZZI: It’s big time. I think he’s sitting in the (waiting) room right there. Everybody gets their opportunity. When you get an opportunity you take advantage of it. That’s great for his confidence, he’s been playing well of late. He’s been playing good all year.

You’ve got Damarri who falls down early. Looked like me out there. But he played well. With A.J. Woods out, and I expect him to be back this week, M.J. took over as a third corner and got some quality reps today. I’m happy for him. And he’s an Aliquippa boy. Good to see the Quips get it done today.

    Q. Krull had an initial drop and then came back and caught the touchdown to win it.

COACH NARDUZZI: You’ve got to rebound. That’s how you — you have to have a short memory. And he made a couple of big plays early.

But as soon as I saw him go low, we saw the coverages they were in, we hadn’t really shown him that play. He was running a slant and I thought, ‘Oh, it’s going to be a touchdown here.’ And there it was.

And I told — after our offense scored I told the defense and Whipple, I said, ‘They will not score a touchdown. There’s no way.’ I was just glad we didn’t have to kick a field goal there. But I knew there was no way they were going to score on our defense. Had a lot of faith in how our kids were playing.

    Q. SirVocea Dennis had a really big night.

COACH NARDUZZI: He was outstanding. He’s taken over that Mike position. And he makes a lot of plays in there, too. He makes them wherever he is. And I was happy with the effort he put out there today.

    Q. What did they do to protect the quarterback in the second half?

    COACH NARDUZZI: Say that again?

    Q. What did North Carolina do to protect the quarterback?

COACH NARDUZZI: I don’t know. We’ll have to look at it. I think they did some different slide protections away from the back, just different stuff that, I could probably do an hour dissertation for you. But we’ll see.

I didn’t think we blitzed well in the second half. I thought there were times where we could have bull rushed the tailback and knocked him into the quarterback. We let him scramble out of there. So, there’s some things we gotta fix. It’s a little bit what they did, but it’s a lot of what we did.

    Q. What are some things that M.J. Devonshire has provided in practice and things we don’t see?

COACH NARDUZZI: M.J. is just a steady guy. He just does his job. He’s trying to get better. He played safety all spring, and we moved him to corner probably at the end of the summer, just thought that was going to be the position for him. And, again, he’s a steady guy. Again, he’s got a lot of confidence now. So he played well for us today.

    Q. Maybe you needed to get the run game going a little more than you did?

COACH NARDUZZI: You try to get it, you gain one yard. Kradel was out of there. I don’t think that helped a whole bunch. Houy didn’t play today, probably could have. We were able to save him.

Ryan Jacoby got his waiver too. Transfer from Ohio State. We may need him as the season goes on. We’re excited. Got the news Friday — yesterday was Friday, but it was a Wednesday.

    Q. You have to keep the offense focused, how do you keep focused after that interception so late in the game, kind of turned things around?

COACH NARDUZZI: I didn’t have to do anything. I don’t have to keep them focused. Kenny comes back and does what he does. That’s Kenny Pickett. Nobody’s perfect. That tells you what kind of competitor he is. He made a mistake, it was a screen, and we’ll look at the tape see what happened there. But they made a play, we didn’t. Maybe trying to force the ball in there and be the hero. But Kenny Pickett comes right back and does what he does.

    Q. What does that tell you about the group?

COACH NARDUZZI: We’ve got a great football team. I think we’ve got a championship football team in that locker room. When you talk about the explosive offense we have and have had all year. And again our defense keeps getting better every week, I think. It says a lot about those guys in there. They work hard. And we’ve got a good football team in that locker room.

    Q. What can you say about the fans staying through the rain?

COACH NARDUZZI: Love that question. Panther Pitt were outstanding. They were loud. I told Cal (Adomitis), at the coin toss, I don’t know if we’ll win the coin toss. But we like to play defense. If we’re not, we’ll be right down in the end zone with the students.

My hat goes off to them. They were great. And hats off to Heather (Lyke) for getting those guys cranked up in the end zone, whatever those things were. She comes up with something new every week. So thank you, Heather. You’ve got one more next weekend, so get it done.

    Q. You mentioned earlier this week they were going to throw some design runs at you. How do you feel you guys defended that?

COACH NARDUZZI: We did a great job. He ran a quarterback draw early and we stuck him. When you talk about pure quarterback runs, I think we handled them better than anybody did. He got us on some scrambles, I think it was poor pressure, just angles and letting them get out of the pocket. That’s where he got his yards at least in the second half on scrambles where we didn’t have good ratio as far as our pressure goes and just keeping him — we just didn’t do a good job pressuring.

There’s times our guys should have had sacks. We’ll look at the tape see. We bottled him up pretty good and again it wasn’t designed quarterbacks. Phil Campbell had one hell of a — excuse my language — hit on fourth down and one. Him and Deslin (Alexandre). I think Deslin had his feet, and Phil Campbell came in. That was a big-time play down about our 30-yard line going in.

  26. PITT FOOTBALL POSTGAME NOTES

Pitt 30, North Carolina 23 (OT)
    Nov. 11, 2021

    TEAM

With tonight’s 30-23 win over North Carolina in overtime, Pitt improves to 8-2 overall and 5-1 in the ACC.
It is the Panthers’ best overall mark through 10 games since the 2009 team opened 9-1.
Pitt now has an all-time record of 10-10 in overtime, with a 7-2 mark at Heinz Field and 3-2 in the ACC.
This is the second consecutive game Pitt has defeated North Carolina in overtime after a UNC comeback. In the last meeting on Nov. 14, 2019, the Panthers won, 34-27, in OT at Heinz Field.
Pitt is now 5-10 all-time against North Carolina, with a 2-6 record in ACC play.
This is the first time since the series began in 1974 that Pitt has won consecutive games over UNC.

    OFFENSE

Kenny Pickett threw for 346 yards to become the Panthers’ all-time career passing yards leader. He now has 11,501, surpassing Alex Van Pelt, who threw for 11,267 yards from 1989-92.
Pickett now has 3,517 passing yards on the year, which ranks second on Pitt’s single-season list. The school season record is 3,679 set by Rod Rutherford in 2003.
Pickett achieved his 15th career game with more than 300 passing yards, the most in Pitt history. He surpassed Alex Van Pelt, who had 14 from 1989-92.
With three touchdown passes this evening, Pickett now has 32 on the year, the second most at Pitt in a season. Pitt’s record is 37 TD passes, set by Dan Marino in 1981 and tied by Rod Rutherford in 2003.
Pickett now has 71 career TD passes, second at Pitt only to Dan Marino, who threw 79 from 1979-82.
Pickett is the first Pitt quarterback to pass for multiple TDs in each of the first 10 games of a season.
Lucas Krull was responsible for the game-winning score, catching an 11-yard pass from Kenny Pickett on the initial possession of overtime. Krull now has six touchdown catches on the season, the most by a Pitt tight end since Dorin Dickerson had 10 in 2009.
Jordan Addison had 84 receiving yards (on six catches), giving him 1,070 on the season. He is Pitt’s first 1,000-yard receiver since Tyler Boyd compiled 1,261 in 2014.
Matt Goncalves made his second start of the season at right tackle (New Hampshire). He now has five starting assignments for his career, having made three starts at left tackle in 2020.

    DEFENSE

Corner M.J. Devonshire sealed Pitt’s win with an overtime interception. It was the first INT of his career.
Pitt compiled five sacks against the Tar Heels, led by defensive end Habakkuk Baldonado’s 1.5. The Panthers are 19-1 in games in which they collect at least five sacks under Pat Narduzzi.
Pitt limited North Carolina to 88 rushing yards on 38 carries. Under Narduzzi, the Panthers have held 32 teams under 100 yards rushing and are 25-7 in such games, including a 4-1 mark this season.
Pitt collected a season-high 11 tackles for loss for the second consecutive game. The Panthers also compiled that total at Duke last week.
Tyler Bentley made his second start of the season at defensive tackle (Clemson). He now has five career starts, including three last season.

  41. Some Heinz observations: (I haven’t been back since the last UNC overtime game 2019.)

when did Pitt Fan polite clapping turn into fans standing for kickoffs, big plays, cheering at loud levels and going crazy all game long? Haven’t seen this kind of enthusiasm since 82.
I was stunned at the vocal participation from the student section which stayed to the rainy end! Much appreciated enthusiasm.
the Pitt dance team was phenomenal. Band was ok.
Things that irritate me.. late first quarter arrivals and folks getting in and out of seats over and over, were even worse. Not enough ticket takers caused all the fans that stayed to watch the band march in barely got into the stands by second quarter. This was the first time I’ve been to a Pitt game where beer was served thus fans in my section 135 were getting up many times. Getting beer seemed the priority, not watching the game! The good news, beer lines were so long, mens room lines were non existent. My crowd estimate 44,000
Piped in music was toned down a lot. Much appreciated! Someone actually listened to us alums.
not many sang the StarSpangled Banner or the Pitt Alma Mater. As a singer and music director I noticed!
Also, the Pitt Band was sloppy as hell. When they used two directors, they were out of sync with each other often. Maybe it was the beer!
Pitt Band UNis still look hokey and right out of the Music Man. Caps are utterly stupid with white tops!
Still could barely hear the band when they were seated and I’m only 2 sections away.
so sorry I missed everyone at 5A!
last butt not least (sorry Annie) the coed uniform of the day was black clinging/form exposing long pants that left 0 to the imagination!
I may be old, but I’m not dead!

If Coach Whip had called that play he would be crucified on here – and he should be. I always consider fade patterns to be “throw-it-and-hope” plays. Stupid-football in my book unless you have a WR with great hands and a significant height advantage…

Florida capped a week of upheaval on Saturday by snapping a three-game losing streak with a record-setting 70-52 win over Samford. 58. UVA didn’t show Pitt much last night. The Cav’s are coming off a two game losing streak – both very physical contests that caused their star QB to sit last night with “bruised ribs”.

The one thing I noticed was the UVA D was better than I thought. Hopefully Whip and Duzz are watching tape after church this morning to figure out how to attack that D that held ND to 28 points. It appeared HC Kelly took the foot off the gas.

W_F has a monumental game next week as well vs Clemson to potentially decide the Atlantic division crown. A Deacon win and they are in the ACC championship, same with Pitt.

Mrs. Erie has expressed interest in going to Charlotte. A rematch with Clemson does not interest me much.

Next week’s game plan should include a heavy dose of LBer blitzing and hard hits on the QB when appropriate – in other words, avoid the penalty. I believe the run game will be successful verse the Cavs if Whipple can stomach that option.

    Go Pitt!

    Liked by 2 people

  59. Kelly did substitute liberally early in the second half.
But I don’t think you can take much from the game, ND on a totally different level
    And VA without their QB.
It does appear that both of their QB’s are banged up.
This time of year injuries are always a factor.
Let’s hope that ND put some of VA’s linemen in the training room this week.
I did think the Wake game was much more physical, and their QB appeared banged up as well.

I will still be totally amazed if Whipple relies on the run at all. VA’s D-backs looked really good, ND’s receivers were just that much better.

As always it comes down to line play, VA’s were no match for ND’s.

If VA’s QB’s cannot run because of injury, that is a big weapon lost. If they do run, Pitt needs to make them pay.

    Can’t wait.

In the past 15 years, only four other Power 5/BCS QBs posted a 3,500/35 line with less than five picks through 10 games. All four finished in the top four in Heisman voting, and two won it.
