  1. I just imagined Duke fumbled…..and then I just imagined these Refs didn’t call it.

And the ACCN announcers imagined it too !

  2. Fumble not called. ACC refs at work already. Pitt sieve D hard at work. 7 straight completions. Camp hurt.
What a great start for Pitt!

    1. No way to slice it….this defense is slow, unathletic and poorly coached.

Even the vaunted D line has disappeared the last 2 games.

Embarrassing performance from the defensive guru!

Just like every week, receivers running wide open all over the field. Difference again is no pressure up front and high school D backs won’t even work against Duke.

The second fumble, the duke runners elbow was on the ground.

    The third fumble, we recovered…..shewww

Teams are banged up and tired this time of the year. What a crime making them play on a Thursday. ESPN cannot force it, so shame on the ACC. Or can they?

Thursday will come down to a fluky defensive play to win it. I have to admit, not feeling great about this defense one bit. Duke did get 16 fluky points but for how bad it had been the past two games, 29 is 29 however I want to spin it.

Two starters out on the OLine sounds worse than it probably really is. While Blue Mountain Bart looked like he was ready to go back in, he only gets one ball thrown to him per game anyway.

As far as the DT’s go, I’ve not been impressed with the exception of Cancey. Let’s get the young guys some reps like Brima and Donold.

Shocky had his best game in a while.

    Jared Wayne is excellent.

Krull really gets open a lot, but his hands…

These slow starts must end, lucky that was Duke.

Maybe Whipple is figuring it out, or the guys are figuring it out for him:
    Hammond 16-81, 5.1 yd average
    Izzy 10-68, 6.7 yd avg
    Davis 4-7, 1.5 yd avg.

Davis safety was a low point in the game. Why would Whipple do that?
When you have two guys that break tackles on almost every carry.
Izzy’s vision is unreal, he finds the hole, Hammond knocks people backwards,
    and almost always falls forward.

Those guys need to be used more not less. I know it is hard when Kenny can score
on any play. But when a defense has to worry about both the run and the pass….

The defense turned the ball over with a fumble and on downs early in that game or
it could have been a much bigger hole to dig out of. They really picked it up and blitzed the Duke QB right out of the game.

We sure don’t get many(any) of the close calls do we?

  67. Watched a bit of the UNC-Wake game. I still say we are going to need to run the ball more to keep our defense off the field as much as possible. UNC has the ability to physically beat you with strong runners and a superb QB who van throw and run right over you. He is a monster.

Hopefully Wake took something out of them. Unfortunately Duke put some more of our guys on the bench or in the training room. This is where Pitt’s depth has to start coming through.

Pitt needs to play them one at a time, but the next three games are going to be really tough 60 minute contests. Pitt has to win all three, because it doesn’t appear that Miami will lose another.

I’m not sure why UNC’s D gives up so many points, they have players.

With their recruiting, they should get better every year.

    1. You’re thinking along Narduzzi/Wannstedtian archaic lines.

Why run the ball, when you have a Gunslinger like Kenny.

Time of possession means literally nothing these days. Dozens & dozens of examples, including
      many Pitt games this year.

Yesterday, Tennessee had the ball for 43 seconds of the 1st quarter, yes that’s 43 seconds and led 14-7
after 1 Q. Meanwhile Kentucky’s offense ran over 100 plays and still lost.

        1. Pitt’s main problems on Defense are not long sustained rushing drives by their opponents.

It’s giving up big plays and plays in huge chunks. So that is the issue, not the length of time
          they are on the Field.

          Liked by 1 person

          1. So you say, but that is going to change since UNC runs the ball and so does Syracuse.
The idea is to give the other team fewer chances and shorter fields.

Against Miami, they scored the first three times they had the ball, we scored first but then only one field goal the next three drives.

It is all about being more efficient and scoring more often. Six td passes and 500 yds passing are outstanding but not so much when you lose the game.

By the way you changed the subject, number one Georgia has a very balanced offense so it obviously still works, even in 2021.

            Liked by 1 person

          2. If you look at the top ten teams most are very balanced running as much as they throw.
As great as Pitt’s offense is it could be better.
Fact is Football is a team sport blaming the defense for the losses matters little, they are still losses.
It most certainly does matter how often and how much time a defense spends on the field.

Look at the UNC-Wake game last night. The game was decided by turnovers, Wake threw two interceptions. Both of our losses had interceptions.

It comes down to the offense that is most efficient that wins.

Wild shoot-outs may be fun, but only if you are on the winning side.

            Like

            1. As I mentioned below, Kentucky ran almost 100 plays(99) on Offense to Tennessee’s 48 plays so more than a 2 to 1 margin in plays run, moved the ball up and down the field with 35 1st downs and still lost.

And the turnovers were not a factor as both teams only had 1 each.

So it didn’t matter, how much Tennessee’s Defense was on the field, which was 46 minutes of a
              60 minutes game. Tennessee won.

              So you’re wrong.

The Miami loss is haunting us and will until we win the Coastal in Syracuse.

UNC QB Howell, RB Chandler and WR Downs are all NFL bound – they are fast, strong and very intelligent FB players. Pitt will have their hands full on Thursday.

Speaking of Thursday, Mrs. Erie has a medical procedure this Tuesday – her doctor tells us she will be extremely uncomfortable and sore all week. So, I proceeded to sell my 2 club seats many weeks ago upon receiving the news from her doc. I reached out to all my Pitt friends that don’t usually go to the games, with no takers. I then reduced the asking price to less than 50% and only a buddy of a friend has shown a little interest, but no commitment.

I will probably gift them to a client of my business who is a Pitt grad and only goes to games if I give him my tickets. That says a lot to me about the value of Pitt football. It’s sad…

On the safety, I thought two things… OK with the play call, but why was Davis in for that play? Needed beef in for that. Guess tthat’s Powell’s call? Also thought Davis was a bit responsible for the safety as he should have cut inside based on how the left side blocking was going down. WHen he has a hole to get through, he’s fun to watch, but just not big enough to count on for tough yards imo.

As for run/pass mix, they have so many weapons offensively… lots of good receivers and a top QB. So, I get that the pass will be used more than my personal preference.

We were whistling by the graveyard for weeks on the injury thing. Really sad if thats the end of Mack’s Pitt career. He does such a good job catching balls in traffic.

Bartholomew…. did he come back in after the injury?
Krull … needs to focus on making the catch – more important that YAC.

Pitt crowd – vocal and could be heard on TV. Well done folks, well done. Sorry I could not have been there.
Venue – love Wallace-Wade Stadium. Blue print for what to do with an older bowl stadium. Sigh.

Announcers – before I started watching Packer and Durham on ACCN in the morning, I was guilty of painting the ACCN play-by-play/color guys with a broad brush…provincial Tobacco Roaders (where are you Emel?). But realized that Wes Durham did the call yesterday…thought he called a good game from a Pitt fan’s perspective. Both guy appropriately questioned ref calls (or lack thereof) on fumble, PI, etc. And appreciated the love they showed Kenny, which perhaps isn’t saying much because Kenny’s play demands attention. I’m all in on that guy. Special player.

Defense – we will be challenged mightily the rest of the way. Glad we have depth witht he injury situation. Wonder who’s redshirt may get burned as a result? WHat’s Donald’s status in terms of number of games he’s played? Heard he is developing well. Nahki Johnson as well?

Hope the weather cooperates on Thursday and looking fwd to seeing the Red5A crew. You all make the seasons special.

    Lets go 1-0…

    1. Although not everyone here was a fan of the color change, the new ones pop and they much more evident. That, plus the pride that a winning team provides…

I will be wearing my colors today at Lowe’s for certain.

  73. Good comments, JoeL. The defense needs to step up big time and cannot use injuries as an excuse. The goal line play with Davis was troublesome. I wonder if Powell inserts the players while Whipple calls the plays, so there can be a breakdown in communication. Once that play is called, Powell should have the correct personnel on the field for success. Were there two TEs on the field?

  75. Life is sure strange (hey don’t us boomers know it), but it was more than strange yesterday.

After the Horribly wrong non-Safety call last week, which cost us a chance of winning that game.

Duke gets the Safety against Pitt, with very little debate or camera angles (again) on the play.

Strange, coincidence, message being sent…..or something else ???

  76. Observations: I saw Daniel Carter get in for one offensive play and picked up a big first down…wonder why we don’t see more of him ? Stovall and Tysir not suited up-hope they are back for Thursday night…can see why Krull didn’t get to play much at the Swamp- so reminiscent of TE’s past….Bartholomew is a STUD 9no, I am not referring to his earrings!!!),,,IMO, Whipple doesn’t still not using TE’s enough…There is a lot of pariety in college ball these days…3 of the best QBs in college ball are playing in the ACC….going to be some butt clenching moments going forward…”D” better show up early and stay to play…GET READY…Hail to PITT!!!

    1. We’ll have to put Carter’s lack of PT, in the more than strange category.

He’s in there along with another guy who looks pretty good, when he plays. Todd ‘General’ Sibley.

Agree the Manster Krull is a specimen but terrible hand/eye coordination, wonder why nobody turned him into a Lineman since
he has no future at TE (watch he’ll get drafted now, lol)

  78. New ESPN Power Rankings Out

    Pittsburgh Panthers (7-2)

After doing some very Pitt things early on at Duke, the Panthers righted themselves and pulled away behind quarterback Kenny Pickett. The senior passed for 413 yards and three touchdowns, becoming the first Pitt quarterback ever to record consecutive 3,000-yard passing seasons. Pickett also tied Alex Van Pelt’s team record with his 14th game of 300 pass yards or more. Pitt used a 23-point second quarter to take control and had 220 rush yards and three touchdowns against a hapless Duke defense. The Panthers have scored 50 points or more four times in the same season for the first time since 1905. They remain atop the ACC’s Coastal Division heading into their most important stretch of the season. — Adam Rittenberg

Pitt sits at #6 in the Computer Power Index. With a 1% chance of making the Playoffs !!!

They will also certainly cheat and try to gain an advantage pre-game, during the games (Clemson is notorious for trying to steal Sideline Signals in the ACC) and even post-game.

Or do you also believe the New England Patriots weren’t bugging their Opponents Locker Rooms
    for many years.

America has become a nation of cheats, from the Top down and Sports is no different.

    1. Unfortunately the Heisman was lost with that final interception in the Miami game. If Pitt scored and won, the Heisman talk would be furious.

Personally I think it is a distraction. Pitt needs to win this week and that is all they need to think about.

Also Larry deserved to win but he played on an average team that the media paid no attention to.

      1. George Rodgers played on an Average South Carolina team, but managed to beat out Hugh Green, probably the greatest college Defensive Player Ever….for 11-1 Pitt. Number 2 ranked Pitt.

Gordo…you should no better. Nobody was paying much attention to an 8-4 South Carolina team that
        year.

        1. Btw, the media was paying lots of attention to Pitt in 2003, the year Larry Fitz got robbed on the Heisman.

Pitt was ranked thru most of the year(11 weeks) was ranked pre-season Number 10.

And Larry Fitz highlights were a staple on ESPN and other sports network weekly highlights.

          So wrong again 🙂

    1. AP poll doesn’t count for much anyway since the CFP launched.

And Pitt wasn’t ranked by the AP last week. They were 25 in the Coaches Poll ( moved up to22 this week)

I would think we’ll be ranked around #21 in the CFP, when that is released.
