The POV’s Way Forward

We got the results of my son’s biopsy late yesterday and the news wasn’t good – cancerous lymph nodes in his lungs. Obviously that will take up my time and energy until we understand what is ahead of us and start the treatment process. I will attend to his needs above everything else.

Here is what I’ll do for the time being on here: I’ll open the blog up and post the Game Day Threads each week. I have done some in advance and the rest will not take up a ton of my time.

Here is what I need from you: First someone to look for Pitt football articles on the internet and post as many links in the comment section as you can daily (The Tribune Review is my best source with Pitt football’s home page and the Pitt News used a lot also). That really helps out fans who want to discuss things each day. I usually do that in the morning if possible.

Second I need you all – everyone – to truly understand that I do not want to have to play mediator or babysitter with comments that are sent to approval. If I get those I am going to bulk delete them.

I’ve been asked why I care about the standards of commenting so much and I say this: my name and reputation is on that blog. While that might not matter to some it means a ton to me. I have worked hard to be the man I am and so I care about keeping it that way.

Third I need to know that what is posted on the POV comments is written for all commenters to read and enjoy. The problem we have on here with obsessive commenters is that you readers 1) read the comment the guy(s) wrote and 2) engaged with his comment with one of your own. Doing that plays right into the bad commenter’s hands and is exactly what he wants – to control the flow of comments. Non-engagement cuts that down.

I’m sorry that this is happening in what may be (surprising to me) Pitt’s best year in a long time. I’ll do what I can to keep this blog up and running for you readers to enjoy the wins.

Thanks for understanding – if it looks like I’ll have time in between doctors’ appointments and his course of action / therapy I’ll post again asking others to contribute articles. But I do mean this, the POV cannot be a source of negativity for me.

Reed

  1. Very sad news. You and your family are certainly in our thoughts

As for the other issue. POVers , please attack the comment, not the commenter. I have been guilty of this a few times in the past but will strive to be better

  7. Very sorry to hear that, Reed. Best wishes to him for a full recovery, and prayers to you all in getting through this.

I appreciate the effort you put into the POV, but fully understand that priorities change. Will do my best to do as you have asked, but will certainly respect any decision you make regarding the path forward for the site.

    Godspeed!

  8. Thanks all.

Question: Would you like the gameday thread to be posted on the evening before the game so that you can discuss the team and opponent – and anything else. I would schedule them for 8pm on the day before… or just at 1200 am (midnight) on gameday?

  9. I just realized this is a bye week. If someone wants to throw in a filler article email me at rkohberger and, if possible, do it as a Word document and attach to the email. I’ll find time to post it.

  10. Reed, best wishes to your son, you and family. I know this will be a trying time for all of you.

OK POVerts, check your post before sending. One sure way of policing the blog is to let any posts that are automatically sent to purgatory is to let them wither there, If you posted and it doesn’t show up, first look in the mirror before complaining, Reed shouldn’t have to QA your work.

  11. Reed, We’ll be praying for your family in the trying time ahead and for the best outcome for your son.

I have enjoyed your work on Pitt football since back in the Blather days and have been awed by the effort you have put into keeping us all up to date on the subject and giving us an opportunity to voice our frustration and sometimes joy over Pitt athletics.

Again, our prayers are with you.

  14. It’s times like these that we all need to reflect on what’s truly important. God bless your son, his family, and the doctors who will be doing everything possible to get him through this terrible time.

C’mon guys, let’s pull together and make sure nothing is ever sent that needs Reed’s attention. It’s really simple, before hitting “Post” re-read it and be honest with yourself about whether it’s appropriate. We’re grown men/women who know what’s appropriate and what’s not.

Also I echo Reed, don’t let anyone drag you into the abyss with comments made to antagonize each other.

  15. Reed… As any of us know who have faced health issues either personally or with someone close, half the battle is having the RIGHT doctor.

Best thoughts to you and your son moving forward!

  16. All – we are in the Johns Hopkins Health System here in Maryland and they are highly rated as one of the best – #6 in Oncology and right up there with the Mayo Clinic and Sloan Kettering in NYC. We also carry their US Family Health Plan for retired vets and families and that is a great relief also. So – we have it covered well I think.

Now we just have to go out and kick this cancer’s ass!

P/S: I’ve given Rich in SC WordPress admin authorities to moderate or trash comments as he sees fit. That is a big help for all of us. So – if your comment is edited or disappears please roll with it. Just rephrase and repost most probably.

    Thanks guys…

    1. Interesting read. You could change the names and you’d have a pretty good description of many Pitt losses over the past 2 years. Hopefully not a recap of one of the many winnable and losable games in front of us.

Here is the link to the article jrnpitt referred to above. I agree with him—it’s a great read. I believe I recall that Reed was the first one here to extol the talent of Kenny Pickett…….what now seems like decades ago?

    1. True, I watched him for the first two days in his first spring practice (if you remember he left HS early) and wrote about him in a full article for the Blather. That was the first mention of him at all in the Pitt FB media.

I was sure he’d be the starter asap and that he had presence and an above average arm.

      1. Also, I wrote an article which prominently mentioned Kenny following the spring game that year, which Reed was unable to attend. Kenny was the most impressive QB that day.

  21. Bad news/positive news. A diagnosis of cancer is EXACTLY what nobody wants to hear. The positive news
is that you are seeing doctors at Johns Hopkins. Reed I have been living with cancer for more than 14 years and Johns Hopkins is keeping me going every day…..great, caring, knowledgeable doctors..

  22. Great article about KP. The improvement in his accuracy has been remarkable. Better line play has assisted with that and decision making. He has been consistently good. Hopefully it continues. Obviously hard work and experience pays off.

Lets hope that if and when he does have an off day, the team can make up for it.

Looking forward to watching ND vs VT Saturday, Hoping VT wins but gets physically and emotionally drained.
