Dan72’s Take on the Final Four

March Madness 2021 – Dan 72 selections and comments

This might be a NCAA Tourney better bracket to look at.

Since Pitt is again not in the NCAA’s I thought it appropriate to submit my bracket (I only do one each year) and open discussion on the POV. I don’t have nearly the passion this year as I have in years past but since I’ve been in the top 2% several recent years, I thought I’d share. I’m usually very good or very bad…not much in the middle. So, I’m open for laughter (at my picks), discussion and comments. It is all about matchups.

My Final Four

* I have the University of ‘No Classes’ UNC #8 going a long way – even to the Final Two.

* I have Bama #2 and Illinois #1 in the next two with Illinois losing to UNC in the Final Four

* I have Gonzaga winning it all beating UNC 89-85; not sexy but the best team

My upsets and Comments:

* Not an upset but everyone has Gauchos UCSB #12 beating #5 Creighton. Stay with Creighton. They are the better team and conference.

* I have the Shockers of Wichita State #11 beating Drake and taking out USC #6…Pitt has felt their NCAA wrath several times.

* I have lighting quick VCU #10 beating athletic Oregon #7

* I do have Georgetown #12 over Colorado #5

* I have Michigan State #11 – beating BYU and playing well again at years end.

* I have #10 Maryland crushing #7 UConn

* I have UNC #8 over a bad Wisconsin #9 team, then beating a struggling Baylor team and then beating Nova #5 and squeaking by Ohio State to get to the Final Four and yes, I could get crushed any of these four rounds

* I have VA Tech #10 beating a tough Florida #7 team.

* I have Loyola Chicago always tough opening round #8 beating G Tech #9

* I have the ‘Cuse beating a high scoring San Diego team with late momentum and their magic 2-3 zone.

* I have Rutgers beating Clemson in a #7- #10 matchup

* Last but not least I have WVA going to the Final Eight and making a big run

So, discuss and laugh at my folly but please don’t bet any of these games based on my opinion.

  1. A final 4 of Illinois, Gonzaga, Baylor and Texas would be a sweet slap down to the ACC blue bloods who think they control NCAA basketball. Seeing Kentucky and Duke looking in is great fun!

    1. I would love nothing more than to see no ACC school in the sweet 16. Even Syracuse because I can’t stand coach whiny boeheim. I’m rooting for Maryland, Rutgers, Texas and Grand Canyon.

  2. The committee certainly doesn’t seem to want Loyola-Chicago(24-4) to make another run.

Only a 8 seed gets them maybe the hottest team in the country now, Georgia Tech
winners of 8 in a row,

And then if they somehow get past them, they get #1 seed Illinois.

  3. Nice article, Dan72. Good luck with your predictions. Unfortunately for me, I haven’t been interested in the NCAA since Pitt became irrelevant. I miss the old Big East when Pitt was a force and where I would track every Big East team in the tournament and only root against them when they played Pitt. Remember when three of the final four were from the old Big East? Loved it. Maybe Pitt will be relevant again, someday, someday.

    1. Remember that very well. St. John’s, Villanova & G-Town. Came close to being an all-BigEast Final 4, as
BC was lost in the Regionals by 2 points. Fat Little Rollie won….too bad.

  4. This topic would be one I would be SOOOO intensely interested in IF PITT WERE RELEVANT,,,,, or even in the tournament. As it is, I’m still very into Dan’s predictions and will briefly comment on a few where I agree totally or differ significantly.

First, I always pick 2 brackets that matter and enter them in 1 or 2 local pools. I have been very good and won 3 times over about the last 20 years and rarely been terrible in pools where there have been 60 to 100 entries. One year I placed 1st and 3rd and one of my kids got 2nd in one pool and in the other pool got 2nd.

Small bet pools of $5 and $10 per entry so only won a few hundred.

I like UNC(if they beat Baylor, look out) so in the one I have them beating Baylor, I have them to the Final 4 but losing to the Zags.
One bracket has Baylor winning. My other winner is Illinois who I think is the most likely to make the final four out of any team in the tournament(watch them go out to GaTech).

Bama? I have them getting to second weekend in one but Maryland winning in one and Texas in the other beating THEM. I have a hard time believing in any SEC team not named Kentucky or Florida. Plus, outside of highlights I have not seen Alabama play.
The Midwest Region is the one I think overall most difficult to pick and likely to be the downfall of my brackets.

I like G-town over anyone, the roll they got on just MIGHT continue.
I like Maryland winning a couple even though they haven’t done well in the tournament much when they aren’t very strong.
I think OSU is the best #3.

The ACC may be done early unless FSU surprises and overcomes and UNC as mentioned above.

Rutgers and Ok State are my other dark horse picks to do some unexpected damage.

        Or head coaching….

        Or AD’ing…..

Unfortunately on the last two, smoke and mirrors covers a lot and you shake and jive to the next opportunity so much that by the time anyone figures out you were awful, you are two obs removed. Example: Pederson. The NCAA figured him out after Pitt and then Nebraska. Nobody would touch him after Nebraska, well except Pitt.

This is also why so many Pitt football coaches get cancelled once they leave. They get exposed by Pitt as being not so good in a not so good environment. Waiting for a Pitt head coach to make it big once he/she left. Or, AD.

    I love this bit:

“Krull attended Pitt’s Pro Day on Wednesday, with the thought he could have been among his 16 former teammates who worked out for the NFL.

They come back, and a lot of them look completely different,” he said. “They look great. They look like they haven’t eaten a carb in I don’t know how long.”

    2. When all you have to do is work out and eat healthy all day it is easier to have a buff body. Remember our guys still have to do school work so not as much time to pay attention to the other stuff. And college boys will eat like college kids, instead of like young men preparing for the biggest job interview of their life. Athletes don’t always pay attention to their sports dietition- I heard that straight from a dietician’s mouth.

  24. Don’t get the attention being paid to Krull. Pretty obvious from the little bit we’ve seen, NOT a play-maker by any stretch of the imagination.

Looks great until the game starts.

Now the TWO freshman Tight Ends coming in, that could be something worth focusing on.

    1. I think that’s a bit harsh, like your evaluation of Twyman and Hamlin, maybe a bit pre-mature.
I agree that Krull has a lot to prove after a couple of dropped passes, but the guy has a year to prove himself worthy of the NFL and I’d rather root for him than against him. He was obviously part of the game plan before his injury, so while you have a 50/50 chance of being right, I’m hoping he’ll be as successful as our last transfer from Florida.

      Like

    2. Agree….a whole article about some player who recorded 1 Catch for 6 yards. And 9 catches in 2 years at Florida before that.

Wonder who Mr. Krull is ?

      Like

  25. The TE played 10 games for Florida and caught 9 passes…was never getting my hopes up. Maybe he’ll break out but that depends on our narrow vision OC.

    But hey!! Listen to this!

Things are changing. You’re going to see the tight end’s going to play a big role in this offense. Coach (Mark) Whipple (offensive coordinator) has been doing a wonderful job, making those right calls, getting us involved, getting our confidence up.

“The old stuff’s the old stuff. We’re here now and things are going to change.”

It’s a new day in Pitt football!

Seriously thought, I bet that is almost a word for word quote from the staff to get the kid to return over the off season.

    Liked by 1 person

  26. You know what? I’d donate a big check if just for once someone on our coaching staff, preferably the HC, would just look people in the eye during fall camp and say “Look, I know this team. Don’t get your hopes up too much but we may not be as good as they hype we are putting out.”

All the crap we read in August about a 10 or 11 win season looks so ridiculous now. And don’t throw Covid out as an excuse, other teams had the same situation or even worse as Pitt was good at keeping the kids virus free.

    Like

    1. C’mon Reed, it is the coaches job to be positive and pump up his teams chances in the spring, while saying saying we still have a lot of work to do.

Plus I don’t think the 10 or 11 win season predictions are coming from the coaching staff, even if they should always be the goal.

Covid did affect the season with the schedule changes taking away some easier teams which we had history with and replacing them with Clemson, NC State and BC. They didn’t remove ND or MIami like they did Duke and VA. They also had us travel to the deep south 3 times during a pandemic.

So with fewer overall games and more difficult schedule we end up with a much worse result than was probable without Covid.

      1. Nardstop (sell short) did mention that Pitt should have been top25 early…….and he was serious…..and he was stupid…..and he was arrogant…….

Also, what would you expect Krull to say about his OC…hey the guy is awful……hey he is predictable….he is old…have u seen our qb run over to him to say hi every down? Good grief folks!! Understand when it is PR. Again who wouldn’t love a coach that gets them free food, spending money, tutors, free board, free books, free internet, free laptops, access to lots of girls…..in return for being a mediocre football team. I’m waiting to read my first quote from a player that says they hate their coach and the coach was awful. Gullible!

    2. Reed, please let us all know the list of coaches that said exactly what you are asking Narduzzi to say about the upcoming season. With all due respect IMO your outright dislike of Narduzzi is reflected in almost any commentary you make concerning Pitt football.
I didn’t see the same level of commentary coming from you when it came to Capel and the Pitt basketball team this year. You had plenty of opportunity to come down on Capel and most especially when there were multiple transfers entering the portal. I can only imagine what you what have said about Narduzzi and the Pitt football program if the transfer announcements were coming from the Pitt football team.

  29. Ok, got wordpressed AGAIN (which is why I don’t bother posting much any more), but here are my thoughts of the day, pardon me if they are repetitive and the last post shows up:

    (1) I’m really out of the loop this year, partly due to Pitt not being in the tournament this year plus the Covid nonsense changing everything so much, but I was very surprised last night after I tried to tune into some games only to realize that the Tournament doesn’t start until today! So I watched a play-in game and it was a good one, glad the Drake won. Gotta love the Drake! So today is the first day of the Tournament and unlike the old Big East days when I rooted for our conference, these days I’ll just root for underdogs, or against teams with low character coaches (ie, UConn) or unscrupulous coaches (AZ or LSU), and that’ll be enough to keep my interest for a while. I really think the ACC ref bias against Pitt and for the NC (&SC) teams has probably made it more difficult to root for my conference?

    (2) I see some football talk above, my thoughts on Krull’s involvement this year are the same as last year: I’ll believe we will start using tight ends when I see it. That said Krull seems to fit our TE mold, in that he seems to drop about 75% of his passes similar to other recent tight ends, so I would have to think Pickett has to have some comfort level with that.

    (3) And finally, like I said a month ago, I’d involve Marion significantly with Whipple this year and monitor him closely, and if he is on the ball, groom him to replace Whipple after this season.

And then Narduzzi makes a snarky comment when reporters asked if they would be allowed to view some of the practices. ‘Only if you peak behind the gate’

    1. I think many coaches are somewhat honest when they say, we have a lot of young guys that will be getting their first shot….or, we just aren’t sure. Or, our line should be able to provide the qb with more time. Based on what we did last year on the ground, i would expect improvement, or we have been working on the qb going thru progressions instead of taking off as soon as he hits his 5 step drop. He would not be saying anything except acknowledging what everyone already knows. Easy conversation and people might start to respect him.

OR…naturally we expect to see some regression because we won 11 games! Scratch that. Nardstop will never say that at Pitt.

In reading various posts about the POV bracket challenge, I began to think of Mike Greenberg making Mike Golic have one final “sheet of integrity.” Golic would submit numerous bracket sheets with numerous combinations of winning teams in hopes of winning a bracket challenge. And all these BigJoke teams are basically playing home games like Purdue.

  55. Mens soccer beat Duke at Duke in OT tonight 4-3. Pitt was down 1 player for almost the whole game because someone got a red card and tossed from the game. Soccer is tough- you can’t replace the guy who fouls out. Good job staying on top of the Coastal Div.

  56. The Pitt wrestling team is in 10th place at the NCAA championships with two guys in the finals.

Nothing better for recruiting than two champions crowned on national TV tomorrow night.

Basketball – phewfff! Heard the Big Ten is a Big Joke and the ACC is 0-fer…no Pitt, no interest.

    1. Pitt is over performing thus far. Much like the baseball team. Too bad that couldn’t be said of basketball or swimming.

      1. OK State guy is a FR. If you’ve ever watched Nino wrestle, he is tough as nails, has an awkward style, is the younger brother of several former Pitt wrestlers is a RS-JR and is a Pittsburgh native.

The OK State young man is flamboyant, demonstrative, a FR, he deadlifts 665lbs and could be a great fit on WWE. He beat the #1 seed to get to the finals. I think Nino knows all that.

This match is blue collar Pittsburgh vs Hollywood.

I know who I’m rooting for.

          1. There’s nothing really to hate Ohio for. It’s flat as a board, has Cleveland in it, they’re not known for any great local food, except chili slop in Cincy and other than Ohio Fake the teams are all generally losers, especially on the pro side.

            Sort of like Texas. lol

  57. OT: anyone hear anything about what might be going on behind the locked gates of the South Side FB facility? I’m trying to figure out if I want to renew my season tickets. Mrs. Erie says “whatever you decide, I’m good with”. Fran’s tailgate and golf with yinzers can happen without season tickets.

But I guess frustration with the state of Pitt FB can happen without season tickets as well.

Common Pitt AD, dazzle me with some marketing to get me excited to renew my tickets. They haven’t even reminded me of the renewal deadline. I guess they aren’t close to selling out…

  58. Pennsylvania has 7 of the 20 finalist for tonight’s NCAA wrestling championship matches. One other, Iowa State’s David Carr is the son of Nate Carr who wrestled at Erie Tech when I was in HS. I attended and wrestled the same HS as Nate’s older brother Jimmy Carr who wrestled in the Olympics for the great old USA.

I’m highly entertained by this years wrestling championships – so many great storylines. Four ACC wrestlers in the finals – three are from PA and two are from Pitt/Pittsburgh.

    H2P!

stupid of me to pick VaTech as this year and many lately, any team that Pitt has beaten is suspect 🙂

yet the ridiculous exception to that rule being Syracuse,,,,, and iirc we beat them TWICE and one of those by 20!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW, I lead the tiny group PittPOV2021
