  1. Pitt is now a 4 pt underdog in Vegas and I know why. UNC leads the NCAA in rebounding and post scoring. They have three players under the basket, 6’10 , 6’11 and 7’2. They are muscular and athletic and do the majority of scoring for UNC. To defend them, Pitt has Brown and Coulibaly. Ugh

UNC loves to get out and run and plays fast break basketball every time they can because they own the boards. UNC s biggest weakness is their turnover rate. Worst in ACC. UNC is 10-5 and is on a roll winning their last five. They will try to avenge 2 Pitt losses last year. I do NOT like Pitt’s chances tonight. This is a very bad matchup for Pitt. We better be hitting our threes. I would start Sibande at the 1 or 2. H2P

  2. Whodathunkit? Kentucky is 5-9 and a 7 point dog to Alabama tonight, with losses to Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, North Carolina and Louisville. Crazy times.

  3. Yeah Farmer. Who would believe Alabama is top 10…..in basketball. Actually they have been coming on strong. Alabama also started a D1 Hockey program. Commitment to excellence in athletics, is a great commitment.

  4. UNC overplaying passing lanes. Pitt acts like they’ve never seen it before. Think back door cuts guys!

Capel will have zero rebounds. Tex predicted he would rebound this game. lol with tex! 🙂

    1. CBS Sports shows us with 5 TO’s on five different Pitt players. None of them is X.

  6. Bad part of playing a zone is rebounding which Pitt is getting killed. Even in man Pitt is just not boxing out. UNC playing man but doubling Champ at every opportunity.
Pitt looks lost at both ends. Ugh

  7. Too much size and athleticism. You know you are in trouble when you have to play our two bigs at the same time. really missing Hugely tonight.

Plus we got the announcer that never shuts up again.

    1. That announcer drove me absolutely nuts! Not only doesn’t he shut up but it’s usually about topics other than the game itself. At one point he was rambling on about Louisville women’s basketball. Are you serious. STFU!

  8. UNC killing Pitt on put backs. Just a much more talented team than Pitt. If I’m Capel, I tell the next player who doesn’t run the offense thru Champ is sitting down! Only chance Pitt has.
And not much of one at that.

  9. Have to think that Hugley would be some help here. Not so much for depth since we have no foul trouble. But his big body might fare better against the Heels bigs.

  10. Sports are about match-ups, UNC has elite inside players that will play at the next level.
Coulibaly and Brown won’t cut it against these guys nor will Champ and Toney when they go inside.

  11. I gotta say down only 8 with x and toney playing as bad as they did makes me think there is a chance. We could use big John tonight.

  12. Amazed it’s this close. Refs letting em play. Pitt’s only chance is to pick up the speed of the game. If Pitt just trades baskets, they’ll lose by 20.

  13. If the refs let em play, we get pushed around. If they start calling fouls, we have no depth. Pick your poison.

Can’t believe we’re not in a deeper hole.

  16. This is going to be 2 teams in a row shooting around 50% on us. Inside or outside, makes no difference…

  17. Unacceptable relying on Brown in year three of this regime. He is so bad but goes to class and is a positive reflection of the Mission Statement. I prefer a guy who can rebound and puts school a far second.

Year five is the earliest we can expect capable big man play. Tough to swallow.

  18. Pitt needs rob launch some 3s. Nothing no to lose. No way we can just trade baskets.

This is why you cannot lose to Wake !! A team you beat 9-10 x

UNC just a much better team.

  19. Yeah, I’m thinking of watching another episode of “The Handmaiden’s Tale”. If I’m going to be depressed I might as well be entertained and surprised about the outcome.

  25. 10 point loss.

Listening to the game we sound very streaky and panicky. Did we even set up any plays in the 2nd half at all? Capel has to teach these kids being behind by 6 or 8 points isn’t time to score as quickly as possible.

    1. X-man plays street ball and does what he wants….that’s the problem. And Capel thinks it’s great too…

    2. Bingo, Reed. We have a couple of guys who can shoot 3s (albeit streaky) and we never run picks or screens for them.

    1. you might look to an in game comment during the last two games. Femi looks good and under control. Also fiery as he got into it with a unc player tonight. He is more of a floor general in his brief sample size in my opinion.

  28. Pitt women won at Clemson sweeping the two games this season. Must be the orange unis…😊

Clemson is now 9-6; Pitt is 4-4.

Key players were Freshman Liatu King, who was 7 for 11, while Soph transfer Destiny Strothers was 6 for 8. Soph. Post player Rita is showing improvement at the offensive end shooting 4-6.

There’s a striking parallel between the play of Soph. PG Day Harris and the X-Man. Day has great energy and talent, but too often plays out-of-control. Pitt lost their previous game to Miami by 4 points because of Day’s reckless play. When she’s good, she’s pretty awesome. The women hadn’t played for a month before the Miami game, so Day seemed to be especially rev-ed-up that game…

    Go Pitt.

  29. Is it back to reality now with Pitt basketball on the POV? Clearly the absence of the 3 players since the car jacking is not helping this team. And I don’t expect it to for the remainder of the season. All 3 may eventually transfer out before this saga ends IMO.

    Like

    1. Yes, but only 2 of the three will probably get a chance to play basketball anytime soon – Jeffress and Collier.

Jeffress played at the highest level on the world stage for his age group and was a productive member of the USA U19 Team. This is a disappointing story unfolding with Pitt BB.

I’m afraid this team will be a shell of itself in just a short few weeks.

      1. He’s shooting 23 percent on the season. I think Capel wants to ride it out with Toney and Champagnie. Collier should be seeing a few minutes. He’s your starting four next season after Justin heads to the NBA.

  30. Little surprised by some of the takes on this thread, almost sounds pantherlairish level. I thought Pitt played hard to the end which is why they kept it respectable, but regardless we seemed to play this game even with UNC with the exception of the one player advantage, Bacot. This was obviously and simply a bad matchup, UNC had talent and size at a position where Pitt did not, which led to countless layups and putbacks all game. I like both Jeffress and Collier in terms of potential, but both showed they are not ready for this level yet, hopefully they both get more opportunities as the season progresses. If there is one Capel fought exposed in this game, it is the lack of Center recruiting.

  31. I am hesitant to implicate Jeffress and Collier without any positive proof. However, I have yet to see any info why they both have been MIA over the past few games ….. especially Jeffress whose defensive skills would have be invaluable against Wake Forest.

I don’t think either would have made a significant impact last night …but Hugley may have helped. Still UNC was just a bad match-up for Pitt; we have all agreed here that the 5 position is the weak link (as it has been since Talib Zanna … and even he was a power forward playing the center position.)

Unlike a year ago, Champagnie has been consistently good …. the sad thing is the upperclassmen hasn’t been. Without the depth that the 3 missing freshmen provide, this team needs the big 3 to show up every game like they did last week vs Cuse …. and that’s not going to happen. I just hope there isn’t an all out February collapse like the past 3 years

    1. Actually, Toney has been excellent this year as well, with the exception of last night where he was quiet, but Toney is an undersized guy who does a lot of damage around the rim, and again, due to the size differential that took away a good chunk of his game last night. The only one of the 3 upperclassmen that has not developed imho is Johnson, but I think that’s a basketball IQ situation so that is not likely to change, it’s just going to be hit and miss with him.

    1. Ah, come on, 1618. Any coach starting from scratch who can’t consistently beat Duke and North Carolina by year three, has got to go. Time to move on.

  32. There should be a stat for out of control plays (whether resulting in a turnover or not) that lead to easy transition buckets the other way. I’d bet that X man would lead the country in this category.

    Like

  33. If I was playing Pitt I would always play man to man because that forces X to think he needs to do it all. He is much more effective against a zone and there is good flow to their offense as well.

  34. UCF football went undefeated in 2017, finishing 6th in the AP Poll. Then (1) they lost their coach after the season, (2) lost their All-American QB to a long-term injury late in the 2018 season, (3) lost their AD a few weeks ago, and (4) now appears to be losing their 2nd coach in 3 years.

This is almost Pitt-like (except for finishing in the Top 10)

  35. As usual there was irrational exuberance after the nice wins, seems some Pitt fans are schizo, too high or too low. Pitt is marginally better than last year which is great. We have one very good close to great player, one other solid player, one hot and cold player, a shooter that comes and goes, but is never dominant, a decent power forward playing center. A bench that includes and up and coming point guard, a very soft senior center,
a transfer guard who hasn’t done much. Then you have a much needed big man with great potential who is dismissed for his illegal activity and two guys, one with great potential one project who are MIA for undisclosed reasons. This has really hurt the depth, especially Hugely who was the 1A center, probably the starter by now. Jeffress is a good defender, rebounder and would have been finding his offense by now.

Yet, last night was the first ACC game where they were not competitive, and the POV has collapsed like a pricked balloon. I thought I saw some good things on offense last night, just not enough of them. On defense Pitt had no answer for Bacot and their other big guys crashing the boards. The size and athleticism was overwhelming and their runs were better than ours.

No doubt X is trying to do too much and needs to play more point guard and lower the number of attacks to the board. The ones that work can be spectacular but too often he drives into no man’s land and looks foolish.

To think that Pitt has the personnel to consistently beat teams with HOF coaches and programs that recruit elite players year after year in Capel’s third year is stupefying. Only Pitt fans have that much gall.

There is no doubt that Pitt is better than the last few years, but let’s not get crazy, even a down year in the ACC doesn’t mean teams aren’t good. The loss of the three freshman hurts a little this year, hopefully not a major program setback. Pitt will only get really competitive with multiple solid recruiting classes.

    Maybe a school
Can hire our AD and HC. Maybe Gannon, Wooster or Carlow.

Nobody will rid Pitt of their AD and football coach. Not even Gannon. They ain’t that stupid.
