Seven Panthers Named to All-ACC Football Team

PITTSBURGH—Pitt landed seven players on the All-Atlantic Coast Conference football team revealed today on the ACC Network.

Three Panthers earned first-team recognition: senior defensive ends Patrick Jones II and Rashad Weaver as well as senior return specialist DJ Turner.

Senior center Jimmy Morrissey, senior safety Damar Hamlin and senior placekicker Alex Kessman were second-team honorees. Sophomore linebacker SirVocea Dennis was a third-team selection.

Additionally, senior offensive guard Bryce Hargrove, freshman wide receiver Jordan Addison and junior punter Kirk Christodoulou received Honorable Mention.

Jones and Weaver solidified their status as the top defensive end duo in the ACC, if not the entire country. The pair combined for 16.5 quarterback sacks, the highest sack total by a pair of teammates in the conference (and tied for first nationally).

Turner, who joined Pitt in August as a graduate transfer from Maryland, compiled 436 combined kick return yards to rank second in the ACC. He averaged 8.3 yards per punt return (second in the ACC) and 22.2 on kickoff returns (third).

Morrissey was named to the All-ACC team for the third consecutive year. He has surrendered only two sacks over the past two seasons.

Hamlin, an integral yet unheralded performer for one of college football’s top defenses, led the Panthers in tackles (67) and pass breakups (seven). He also had two interceptions.

Kessman finished his career as Pitt’s all-time leader with 69 field goals. He led the ACC and ranked second nationally with an average of 2.09 field goals per game this season. Kessman is the most accurate long-distance kicker in NCAA history, connecting on 66.7% (12 of 18) from 50-plus yards for his career.

Dennis tied for team-high honors with 14.5 tackles for loss this season. He finished second with 57 total stops. His 4.5 TFLs against Boston College are an ACC season high.

      Addison will be on that soon. Pitt needs about 2-3 more elites on O.

      I’d even take a solid but good TE that actually has a role in the O.

      above average backs. Don’t need to be elite if the line is solid.

      Solid and experienced O line with less flab.

      And receivers that can run the right routes and not drop a ball.

      The O would be so much better with some more talent and better execution.

      Instead pitt is competing for worst offense in Pittsburgh with the Steelers. I think the Steelers caught some offense disease from Pitt about 7 weeks ago.

      I saw in the Domer game physicality from the Domers. Being more physical on O would go a long way. Power running back and game helps. I think that’s the cure. Play action and go deep.

      1. I heard Narduzzi say they pass to set up the run which shocked me. See how well that is working for the Steelers. The entire league figured out how to defend them.

        I’m a spread offense fan, especially the air raid. If you watch a good spread teams, they can run the ball well. It is all scheme, mixing up plays to keep the D off balance and isolating mismatches. Of course you have to have talent but the majority IMO is coaching.

        I think Pitt’s most talented RBs were on the bench and with all the drops, why wasn’t the more explosive Jaylon Baredon (7 rec, 140 yrds) on the field more.

        I see another year of guy like Tipton, Mack, Sibley (average at best) starting instead of the young explosive guys.

        Pitt better hope the light bulb comes on in Whipple’s brain this off season as he plays golf in Arizona.

    2. How many 4 and five stars are among ACC teams. I’m figuring around 250.

      I’m figuring around half of the first team O and D are 4 and 5 stars

      So that’s a around a four percent hit rate

      There are probably over 1000 three stars and less in the ACC

      That’s a hit rate of one percent

      Pretty much 4 times more likely to land on first team if you’re elite

  6. Congrats to our guys, Jones definitely deserves first team. Appropriate that Ford didn’t make the list since he was not on the team at the end.

    I am fine with one more year with Whipple, especially with KP coming back. Offense improved at the end of the year. Covid probably going to affect spring practice again so not a great time for a change. Just hope that O-line spends all winter in the weight room.

  9. Why was Notre Dame so good this year? Look to where it matters: up front. If you count the TE, five out of their six starting OL are on either the first, second, or third all-ACC team.

    I can’t, just can’t, believe Bordeley is being retained. And, please, spare me the nonsense about the OL being better next year because (insert any rationalization here).

    1. I’d prefer to win more games. Recognition should be at the team level and winning championships is all the recognition that should matter.

      I’m happy for the seniors and hope that recognition leads to a big paycheck. It sure did not lead to wins.

  11. WMG along with Borberly and Salem, but thanks to a HC who is too stupid to realize that he has a serious problem on the offensive side of the ball, nothing will change. Hard decisions must be made if this team is going to move beyond mediocrity. Nardummy’s days are hopefully numbered for this failure. Sadly, he will remain till his contract runs out.

    Congrats to the hard work and outstanding performances by the Pitt young men who were named to the ACC teams. Ford’s performance didn’t warrant his inclusion, it had nothing to do with his bowing out when things got tough.

    There must be something in the water at that South Side practice facility. It’s where offensive minds go to rot. At least the Steelers have an excuse, their QB has an arm that is totally shot. But they do share one thing, a horrible offensive line that can’t open a hole or find a way to convert a 3rd down and 1 yard.

  12. One difference between the Steelers and Pitt is that Pitt’s QB is a threat to run. Ben has absolutely no mobility, and defenses can develop schemes to pressure him into bad throws since they have no running game.

    If I’m developing a list of Pitt players who most under performed this year, I’d start with Krull and Sibley. Even Izzy would get some votes, although Narduzzi may have been too hard on him by keeping him out due to pass blocking deficiencies.

  13. For the league minimum, the Steelers could have Kenny next year. Place him in a RPO system. He can beat you with his legs or arm.

    Bens arm is shot. Can’t throw more than 15 yards down field. He’s a statue in the pocket and can really only operate out of shotgun now.

    And he makes $40 million per year. Cut him and the Steelers save $20 million for a new and much younger center and guard and a new drafted power back.

    Bring back physicality. Pitt needs to do the same. Hope that new recruit works out who’s a power back.

    Football is a brutal sport. The side that establishes the physicality is often the side that wins. And that’s both sides of the ball.

  14. Physical toughness and mental toughness often go hand in hand. You need the mental part first to be disciplined tough.

    Pitt and the Steelers can learn much from army.

    But both have a head coach problem. Tomlin rarely enforces discipline and talks tough. Narduzzi is too much a players coach and doesn’t have the right practice drills to enforce things. Plus he rarely holds someone accountable or sets examples with a benching.

  15. Well, we got rid of a coach. Hmmm…..not one that anyone mentioned as being expendable. Rob Harley gone—to Arkansas (presumably as Defensive Coordinator). We now need a linebackers coach and recruiting coordinator. Maybe Whipple and Borbs can share the recruiting role?

          To have good coordinators, you need to pay $1-2 million per year.

          Good position coaches make $500k

          Whipple is getting paid what a typical position coach makes in the sec.

      3. Harley gets a promotion similar to his boss – DC Bates.

        Pitt’s LB’s were less than impact players until last season. Cam Bright and Sir Voc are two good ones that Harley helped to land.

        Look for former Pitt LB Mike Caprara to replace Harley.

  16. I agree that Ben can’t throw the long ball as he used to but still believe he can throw the intermediate balls well. The problem last night seemed to be that he couldn’t step into these throws, he had little time even on intermediate routes.

    I felt all along that the reason the Steelers attack consist 0f 80% short passes was because the OL stinks. They can’t run block nor can they pass block for more than 2.5 seconds. A couple of injuries hurt them but even more so, Villeneuva. DeCastro and Pouncey are going downhill fast after pretty good careers.

    1. I think Ben, Pouncey, DeCastro, Ebron and McDonald all should be cut to save $46 million. The dead cap would be $39 mm but just for one season. Next year is a total rebuild and being $21 million over the cap would leave the Steelers $25 mm to sign Sutton, Hilton and some roster-filling veterans who will be cut as other teams feel the cap pinch.

      Extend Watt and do just one restructure with Tuitt to have more money for the rookie pool and some other vets. I’m all for trading for Darnold and giving him two years with a new coordinator.

      Draft OT, TE, RB, WR with the first four picks.

    1. a good thought … remember the last game, Pitt had 2 WRs wide open on long pass plays but couldn’t connect. Pickett has had issues with not putting air under the ball on long ones

Pickett needs sewing lessons so he can learn to “thread the needle.” He received quite a bit of hype from the media but like Duzz’s D, he did not meet expectations…KP lacks accuracy…His passing TD numbers are very 1960-ish….but he is better than anything else we have coming back…so much for PITT offensive recruiting.

        QUESTION: Did Duzz not want the 2 OLineman who did not sign during the early period or are they still shopping around?

    2. Also makes 1 team soft. The passing team. Absorbing hit after hit with little momentum.
      Makes o line have zero physicality and emboldens the D to be more physical.
      Even the weak will play tough running full speed into a guy trying to catch a ball 5 yards in front of him.
      AND

      2. When you are one dimensional it doesn’t matter what dimension, defenses will learn how to stop you.
        Even worse when you are no longer strong at that one dimension.
        Ben is playing on a bad leg with a sore elbow. His accuracy was never his strong point, much worse now with a weak arm.
        AS Kman says getting your receivers absolutely blown up makes it even worse.

          Big Ben needs cut. There are plenty of young qbs that are just as good, or bad in bens case, that you can get for $4 million or less per year. You can’t afford to pay one person $40 million when there’s so many other glaring issues.

          Just like you can’t afford to have all your money tied up in one head coach at Pitt and not have enough left over to hire quality coordinators and assistants. And for a recruiting budget to go out of state.

      Dokish mentioned Mile Tressel (Jim’s son) who has been an asst at MSU since 2007. He is now safeties coach but was former LB coach and DC after Duzz.. This would make sense if the money is OK

      2. Yep, the Tressel name alone should be able to open up quite a few doors on the recruiting trail. But coming to Pitt for the LB job might not be enough of a reason for him to move over to Pitt from MSU.

  21. Pickett’s throw to Turner for the TD was spot on in the GT game. Unfortunately he makes those throws with that accuracy about 1 out 10 tries. When he has the receiver wide open on those long throws as was the case against GT if his pass came up a bit short the defenders would have crashed into our WR and thus Pitt would have got at least a Pass Interference call on the play.—-As posted by others he doesn’t put enough air under the ball and they most ofter go flying over everyone head. You would hope the Whipple and him could get together change his delivery some on those long passes.

  22. just so we all know the physics and geometry of “air under the ball”

    the ball is only going to come down in one spot at one moment in time

    a ball thrown flatter without air under it only serves to allow a somewhat better chance to high point it if he is beaten on the route
    putting air under the ball when it is inaccurate under every circumstance is simply INACCURATE and makes little difference if thrown TOO FAR as the 2 balls were by KP with wide open receivers

    you can’t run under a ball with air that is 5 yards away ahead of the receiver,,,,in fact it is arguable that a FLAT ball might be reachable with a well timed jump to its lower arc overhead as it passes by

      If you are a Mickey Rooney throw it higher and a little short and the receiver can adjust.

    2. A flat ball is also more easily batted or intercepted by the DB. The QB for UCF is exceptional at putting arc on the ball and hitting receivers in stride.

      One of our problems is that our WRs just keep running when the ball is underthrown. If they would slow up and go up strong for the ball they would frequently draw a penalty, but we don’t do that.

      Other teams have done that to us a lot. It’s not like it’s a secret, but we just keep running like the pass is going to be perfect.

  27. Kickers and Punters very rarely go above 2 stars, so I wouldn’t be celebrating how wrong the recruiting sites are. Each year the 5 top kickers are usually 3 stars and there aren’t a lot of them.

    134 players made the total list if my addition skills are good. At 25 players per position/team (11O, 11D, 3 Special Teams). 15 teams (14 + ND) x 25 positions equals 375 total position opportunities. 36% (134/375) of the 25 positions make it, or 8.93 players per ACC member. Pitt placed 7 which is 1.93 bodies less than average. Points to team mediocrity, not necessarily development.
