I’m pressed for time so not a lot of meat on the bone here.
With that being said … I don’t think Notre Dame is as good as advertised, and we know Pitt always plays them tough.
We do know how bad Pitt is though … at least on offense. As does the rest of the world. Also I don’t see Pitt being able to fix its coverage issues.
And let’s not start in on the officiating
The Irish get lucky again.
Pitt 13, Notre Dame 20
This is the Domers first away game. This is the first game with pitt fans in the stands. Don’t under estimate the power of supporters. And the Irish luck long ran out after holtz.

Check this out from Paul Zeise (if it hasn’t been posted yet):
“Andy: If you were Pickett, why would you stay another year? He has the potential to be a backup NFL QB in my opinion and I feel like staying another year could only really hurt his draft stock given that Pitt is most likely to be weaker than they are this year.
Zeise: If I were Kenny Pickett I would not come back this year until I’m 100 percent healthy. Then I would look into grad transferring somewhere that needs a QB that throws the ball a lot. And I would try and improve my draft stock while playing in an offense that lets me throw the ball, has a good offensive line and wins.
Can’t say that’s bad advice. If we were so sure ‘this was the year’ before this season and keep playing like we have been then next year could be a dumpster fire.

It seems that Pickett has peaked. I’m not sure what he can or cannot do to improve his draft status. Under the Pitt offense the past two years Pickett is among the nation’s leaders in passing attempts, and if not for a weak OL and the receiver drops he would have better statistics. It is not a given that transferring to another school would produce better results for him or move him up in the draft. I think his best option is to enter the NFL draft after this year.

ND has a pretty good defense and an excellent rushing game:
Total Defense 11th 300.8
Rushing Defense 19th 107.5
Passing Yards Allowed 18th 193.3
Team Passing Efficiency Defense 8th 113.89
Scoring Defense 4th 11.5
They are also #2 in 3rd down conversion defense at 20% which is really excellent… Since suck at converting at only 30% I don’t see many long sustained drives chewing up clock on our part.
We ain’t going to score that much tomorrow. They are good at keeping scores low and we are not at scoring so we probably won’t score over 17 points. ND scores 33 ppg.
They will complete some longer (seam to TE) passes getting our LBs to drop into coverage then that open up their run game for some big chunks once past our DL.
We are great at sacking the QB; they are great at protecting the QB giving up only 4 sacks in 4 games.
Their depth talent level is much better that ours and that might really come into play in the 2nd half.
I’ll say the slide continues with:
ND 31
Pitt 17

Dan, how is ND’s secondary suspect? I think they have played well in that regard. Now, if Whipple wakes up from his traditional game day fugue and incorporates a TE for more than two catches in one game then maybe…
But as it stands now our TEs have a total of 7 catches in three games.

Mark Whipple ought to start a personal training business after this season for those of us in the 30 plus age range. His basic exercise, “The Whip,” whips you into shape by doing a series of 30 yard jogs to him, then to a spot, and then back to him again…followed by eight jumping jacks in honor of his favorite all-time athlete Kenny Pickett.

I think Notre Dame is ranked so high based upon reputation. If the quality of their opponents are considered they would be 7-10 positions down in the standing. Their quarterback is no star. Pitts defense and their offensive line will be the critical battle. Whipple’s strategy to incorporate passing in a way to open up the run could counter the major weakness of the offense. This is what will turn the game one way or the other. Even without much confidence in Whipple I think Pitt can pull off an upset. 19-14 off Kessman’s leg.

Pitt Thoughts:
.. Love the student athlete – Go PITT
.. Have to remember to pick up Tums today for the ND game…… used up prior Costco sized bottle
.. Pitt recruits IMO have improved – my basis is the average offer sheet has a higher percentage of higher caliber football programs
.. Exception to above – Tight End although Krull could come on by next year. If he comes back.
.. Was excited when Mark Whipple came on board – an attempt to bring PITT closer to a 21st century offense. Is the issue: Play calling, OL/no run game, TE/limited talent, dropped passes/ by a variety of players, penalties – WOW – When can we put it all together ? ?
— I believe PN will stay for his whole contract – no buyout.
— There will be many players from this team in the NFL.
ND vs PITT Prediction:
PITT – 31
ND – 30

— since 2000, Pitt is 7-1 against the spread vs Top 5 teams
— B Kelly at ND is 1-4 against the spread vs Pitt
— ND looked sluggish a week ago and this will be their 1st away game
— Pitt has a real good recent history vs undefeated highly ranked teams
— ND currently has the longest unbeaten streak at 10 games; Pitt stopped the most recent longest reg season unbeaten streak a year ago vs UCF
all of which is why I am going with Irish … 20-12
You can make a case that last week ND was looking past LVille to their 1st road game, and with GT next week, they will be solely focused tomorrow
And just like last week, there is a disparity in talent. Remember, this is the team that didn’t even use Jurkovec

Pitt will win this game. Here’s why we blow them out.
Brian Kelly seems to coach scared. In his ten road openers, he is 5-5. A COVID Road opener in Pennsylvania is the difference. Indiana is more relaxed about COVID, so we need to be sure that all Pitt Administrators hassle the ND players at every turn, getting them to lose focus.
Whilst coaching the domers against Pitt six times, he has negotiated a 5-1 record, but only one of those games has been by more than one score.
I expect ND to use the dreaded wheel route against us out of multiple sets. I see this mainly in the red their zone to Kyren Williams to set up a qb sneak or two from the domeheads. I struggle with Pitt’s perceived strength against the run numbers. Part of the reason we are ranked so high is because sack yardage comes off the total run yards and makes us look better. I think Kyren Williams has a big day for the domers, but gets hit really hard, maybe by Dennis, which shifts momentum.
Okay, I had to make up the last part so we could somehow win. Low scoring is the name of the game here. It has to be in order for Pitt to win. Book goes deep early (unsuccessfuly), but it is used to keep our safeties from supporting the run. Book reminds me of our old qb that runs before he should. He will roll out alot to get more time and pt pressure on our db”s. Fortunately today he is off the mark. ND OL run game gets yards but they struggle inside the red zone. Book does get yards running too.
I think Yellen does okay but gets dinged up. Aaron Beville Island comes in and bosticks our way to a Pitt victory 17-16. I’ll have another drink now.

I cannot envision a Pitt win with a young backup QB, no running game, and no effective TE to act as a safety valve for the young backup QB. I either see a blow out loss or a somehow a close heartbreaker when Kessman shanks another one with a chance to win at the end. I’d love to be more positive but a combination of winnable losses and some really undisciplined play that led to those losses have sapped me of any positivity about the team right now.
That said, I’m hoping for great weather for those attending from near and far and another classic Pitt upset…with Pedo falling at Indiana so I could rub it in my in-laws faces.

Narduzzi’s failure to recruit top rated OLs is a direct result of his hands off attitude towards the offense. Erie, I understand your point that Narduzzi realizes his OL sucks, and he might even be a bit worried about it since his mediocre win totals could be potentially job threatening. But why hasn’t he landed even one 4 star OL in 6-7 years with different OCs?
I also wonder if Whipple is doing any recruiting. Can any P5 team afford to have their OC sitting on the recruiting sidelines? I’m convinced that Narduzzi’s downfall will be his poor recruiting, although the upcoming class seems to be better. But he might not last to see the fruits of this year’s effort.

Most are predicting, quite correctly, Pitt losing by a bunch. For all those that are hopeful that Pitt may/can win, let me set you straight! PITT IS GOING TO LOSE TODAY. DO NOT HAVE ANY HOPES FOR A WIN. That is my good deed for the day.
Pitt’s volleyball team is coming around. After the horrible two games at Syracuse, they are finding their new identity. The loss of the core of seniors will do that. We have several good young players in Gomez and Nwokolo. Jury is still out on the Jucco player of the year though. Our libero, Popovic, is not as good as the one we had last year. Coach Fisher before the Syracuse games was still trying to figure out his lineup. Unlike our football coach, he was able to decide who goes where. They should have not let the first game against Notre Dame slip away from them after taking the first 2 sets only to lose the last 3. They handed Notre Dame their first loss, 3-1, in the second game and swept Louisville last night. Looking forward to the spring season. Annie was right to have faith in them after Syracuse.

Absurd. We just spent a lot of money going to some really nice duds and what happens, not good enough. They have to go to some drab fashion.

Maybe they think since it’s a gray and drab day they’ll blend in and ND won’t see them coming. I jest of course. YUCK! One more reason not to watch. Poor Tex. Comes all this way just to see crappy uniforms. A win would help alleviate the eye sore.

ND has a kicking machine at the 45 yard line – projecting footballs into the air and into the end zone for their kick returners. It’s run by some co-eds.
Never noticed anyone doing that before….

Krull not in uniform but out on the field doing some encouraging… Left knee is wrapped, but he is moving around on it. Might be close to coming back???
ND QBs throwing some nice 30-yard passes down the sideline in warmups. Nice arc on the ball and on target….
Go Pitt.

Pitt’s fashion designer leaves a lot to be desired. Puzzling how “Uniform Challenged” Pitt has been and is.
Need to rehire whoever it was back in the day.

Pickett out and in a BOOT today. He may be done for the year with the possibility he ends up going the Grad Transfer route to a team that actually has a decent OL.—-Green out, Sibley out also.

I know ND’s roster is loaded, but I count 16 Seniors on the starting 22. That is a mature and experienced group .PITT is playing for pride and I haven’t seen any quit in this team. There might be a hint of desperation among the coaches and players; enough that they put it together one time collectively. PITT23-20.

Disagreeing with Reed here, it’s my understanding that ALL P-5 players and probably all players get a free year not counted towards eligibility.

BUT, if Ford quit the team then he’s out but remains a RS- jr.
