Pitt at Boston College Prediction Thread

Sooo Boston College. Pitt has the double motivation of revenge and getting their noses bloodied last week. In addition to that, through three games BC has given up 11 sacks. BC also doesn’t seem to have much of a running game to lean on. They’ve totaled just 211 yards on the ground – 44 of which belong to QB Phil Jurkovec. NC State came in averaging 200+ yards per game. So I’d expect Pitt to be able to stop the run pretty easily and get after Jurk.

Jurkovec, of course is the x-factor. We all know the story. A lifelong Pitt fan who spurned Pitt for Notre Dame, and then spurned Pitt again for the opportunity to be an immediate starter at BC. Well, lets see how much of a fan he is of our defense. Jurk threw for 313 vs UNC in the opener – mostly playing dink and dunk (5.6 YPA), but seemed to find the longball vs Duke (300 yards on just 23 attempts, 13.0 YPA).

I would be remiss to not point out that BC’s 6’5″ tight end Hunter Long has 25 receptions for 270 yards. He dominated Duke, catching 7 of 8 targets for 93 yards and a TD, and earned a PFF receiving grade of 92.6 last week. NC state exposed a glaring Tight End weakness last week, and it’s one that I pointed out in the preseason. If Jurkovec has time the Tight End down the seam is going to be open all day, and Long is a guy that will make us pay.

Our own passing game meanwhile will have to contend with on of the better pass defenses in the ACC. BC gives up just 223 yards per game through the air. On the flip side, BC has allowed 146 yards per game on the ground so look for Mark Whipple to run the same running play six times in a row until it works.

Pitt is favored by six on the road, which I don’t like. ESPN’s crazy algorithm says it’s basically a toss up (Pitt 52% / BC 48%). Me? I want to buy into the revenge and focus narrative, and we all know that Pitt can play with nearly anybody in the league when they are up for it. But last week’s game combined with a quality Quarterback (Jurkovec), exceptional Tight End (Hunter Long), and Pitt’s injury-depleted roster makes me wary.

Pitt 20 – BC 24. Prove me wrong fellas. Prove me wrong.

The fact that Narduzzi missed getting the best QB to come out of WPA since Marino not once but twice is really too bad. Hopefully we don’t start paying for it tomorrow. Let’s hope our D-line makes him think about it, if just a little. Which defense will show up, the one from last week or two weeks ago?

    1. Me too. I think they only missed Jurkovec once since the when he transferred we already had 2 four star QB’s on the roster, Yellen who has just signed and Bellville who looks right now to be the backup to Pickett. If the D shows up Pitt will win.

  4. Get ready for more dink and dunk with some long passes mixed in. They will want to avoid the Pitt pass rush.
Ease off on the praise of Jurkovec until he accomplishes something. So far his accomplishment is sitting on the bench at ND and having to transfer.
The question for every game should be….can Pitt beat the opponent scoring under 30. I think they can this week.

  5. Note: My original article was based on faulty data. BC has surrendered 11 sacks through 3 games according to ATHLON. That could tilt the balance in Pitt’s favor, but I’ll add the NC State had given up a bunch of sacks before playing Pitt as well, and Pitt tallied two. I’m still sticking with my prediction, but I did update the article to reflect this updated info.

  6. I’ve been touting BC as a sleeper and planned on betting them huge tomorrow. +6 is a gift.
Their O line will dominate. Jurk. Is a better QB than KP. They run a very crisp offense with few penalties. Both BC lines return almost in tact from crushing Pitt last year. They will run no huddle all day and again catch Pitt with the wrong personnel on the field. Still…..
I will not bet this game. I respect the line makers too much and this is a make or break game for Pitt.

  7. I fear you are right re: outcome. After that debacle last week I really can’t stomach watching the BC game. They roasted us last year in the Burgh, they can do it again at home. I’ll record and watch later if a win, pitch recording if they don’t. Best way to manage the BP.

  8. I have this as a win but after last week, not so much. If we lose this one, we are in for an at best 5 win season. So much for the best talent in a long time with no football discipline.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I never understood the talk of all this talent. The team barely beat a 6-6 MAC squad in the bowl game and has lost a lot of players in what I believe was going to be a good defense. The offense, on the other hand, has no RBs, TEs, receivers who drop passes and a mush-pit offensive line.

We will be lucky if Pitt finishes 6-5. I’d schedule UMass on 12/5/20 when the rest of the ACC plays just to get another win.

  9. My revised (after last week’s debacle) season forecast is 4-7. Where will the 4th win come from? Not tomorrow. I’m on board with danh72, Pitt scores one TD and three FGs. The DLine runs out of gas. Again. Hope I’m wrong, but . . .

  10. Pitt and BC are fairly evenly matched. Pitt is a slight favorite because BC’s D has given up much yardage to the lykes of Texasss State and 0-4 Duke.

Pitt wins a nail biter 29-27

Kessman is leaned on for 5 FG’s and he delivers. KP has another decent day with 2 TD’s and over 300 yards passing. But, again Pitt settles for less than they should get inside the red zone.

The D rebounds with a satisfactory day ending Jurk’s day with an INT on the final drive.

Time to put the basketball goal and the hot-dogging away and get focused… vaunted “ D” lost that last game against a mediocre but better coached team…. this D also gave up big halftime leads and lost the BC game last year….Maybe they’re not as good as Pat says they are… I was a believer… Until last week

Jurkovec made his selection purely on the basis of what coach he would play for. Chose Cignetti over Whipple and I don’t blame him one bit. Now, if you want to say we won’t get kids like Jurkovec bnecause of Whipple, I’m all ears….

  13. After watching last weeks game I don’t think Pitt can overcome their injuries to beat BC. I’m looking for a BC 27 to 17 win tomorrow. All BC has to do is to invite Pitt to run the ball and keep throwing those short passes. Pitt will not score many points if they can’t stretch the field against BC.

  14. I am throwing last year’s game out the window. Pitt did not compete and was generally awful.

This year is a different story. I do think we struggle in the defensive secondary again, early. There is mention of their TE and rightfully so. May cause issues for Damar and Ford. My larger concern is Zay Flowers, CJ and Jaelen Gill. Gill is a speedster and will stress out our cbs. Kobay White, WR from Harrisburg, had surgery two weeks ago and is now out for the season. This will help our dbs. Their WR crop is not big, like ncst so we shouldnt see them push our defenders away like flies. They are faster however in my opinion.

Both teams have awful running games, with the BC attack even worse than ours on average per game, so I think that is good for our run defense. I think Hafley has no confidence there and feels more comfortable passing 3 out of 4 plays. Because of that, I think that Jurkovec doesn’t make it through the game. I think their left side of the OL is a weakness that can be exploited and expect Pitt to do that, causing one and maybe two turnovers. His blind side protection is suspect in my estimation and may cause the Jurkovec to throw off his back foot and float the ball for potential turnovers.

This will be a long game with cardboard cutouts everywhere. I see Pitt winning easily in a blowout 24-20 (LOL). BC has as much trouble as Pitt getting TD’s instead of FGs. Pitt gets more td’s than fg’s this week and thats the difference.

      1. Getting Camp, Cam Bright, Baldonado and Hammett back would help as well.

We need a good physical safety to man up against their TE named Hunter Long. Play him rough at the line, get him dirty when he’s blocking and sore after he attempts to catch a pass. Is that P.Ford, Hill or other? The guy has caught 25 passes in 3 games and has been targeted 45 times.

Does Jurk have an accuracy issue?

  15. On their starting 22, BC has 6 transfers…interesting. When i think of Boston College football, I think of big, physical teams; I always refer to their OL as Wisconsin Lite. MM, I agree with your double whammy theory. PITT has revenge and pride, among other factors, to play for tomorrow. At this point, their heads are bloodied but not bowed. I’m thinking they still believe in themselves and rebound in Chestnut Hill. They know the road will get tougher and get back on track. PITT 27-20.

  17. I wanted to provide a prediction for this game, I really did. But after last week’s debacle, two things could happen: Pitt could rise up and make BC pay for the terrible outing last week, or Pitt could be exposed as a team that is just too deficient in too many areas to win many games.

Weaver’s comments this week are an indication that they just don’t get it. They need to understand the problem in order to solve it. The cadence issues could be fixed on the sidelines, so Narduzzi is just making excuses for the poor DL performance. Offensively, there are so many areas that could blow up on Pitt that it is hard to see how they can suddenly turn themselves into an offensive machine capable of scoring 30 points or more.

So I just don’t see how to make a reliable prediction at this point.

  18. Tangential point regaridng the TV situation.

Ever since Pitt joied the ACC, games which were not on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU was almost invariably covered by a channel in our area (Central VA, DC/MD market) called MASN. If we were on ESPN3, it would show up on MASN..sometimes FS2. All the other ACC games could be found as well, with the exception of some of the OOC games.

    BTW – I’m on Comcast…

This year, none of the PItt games have found their way to MASN or FS2 – and of course not the ESPN channels. Tomorrow MASN has FAU vs Southern Miss and FS2 has “Moto America Rewind”. Meanwhile ESPNU will treat our market to Middle Tenn St. vs FIU.

My take on this is that ESPN (and the ACC) is turning up the heat this year on Comcast by moving even more of its inventory off of the historic “spillover” channels tha Comcast offers. If so, I cannot blame them as Comcast’s footprint and the ACC’s overlap heavily.

Thank goodness for the other options.

  20. BC wins 35-21 if we are lucky enough to score three touchdowns. BC’s tight end has a career day against us. At least 7 catches and two TDs. This game was the last chance for a winning season. Looking at 6-7 this year with probably at trip to some bottom of the barrel bowl, maybe. Narduzzi will complain about a bunch of “what ifs” after the game but accept none of the blame.

Volleyball team playing BC tonight and tomorrow night at Pitt. They need to get back their mojo! Both games are on ACCDN. As for Comcast, quit complaining and dump them for TV. Lots of good Internet options.

  23. JoeL, you are clearly right that we fans are being made to pay the price for this money war between ACCN and Comcast. ACC is clearly pushing to produce maximum call in complaints to Comcast, and putting games on the associated channels in Comcast cities would please the fans but would reduce the number of complaints, even though it would increase incoming revenue to the ACC. So ACC could expand access if they cared about us fans, but we are pawns in this money disagreement. Maybe it will take a high volume of complaints to the ACC to help resolve the issue.

Meanwhile, we still suck upfront on offense and BC goes with tight man coverage all day, causing Whipple to call crossing routes underneath. Still no running game. Kenny scrambles a lot.

IMO, Pitt defense was well aware of the Pitt hype on the ACCN network. If you were able to watch it (and I know most of you were not able), it was pretty persistent. They got their wake-up call.

  49. Agree with Huff III and others about the importance of this contest. These games against the ACC’s middle and working class are more important than the matchups with Clemson and the Florida schools (when they’re playing at their normal level). Long-term, everyone else is fighting to be in the upper middle class tier right below those schools and you want to establish yourself at the top of that pecking order. The difference in quality between say the 5th place ACC team and the 11th place team is pretty small but the impact on the program is enormous. The BC game will go a long way toward determining whether Pitt is movin on up to the East Side or on the Sanford and Son trajectory.

I predict a rebound game of sorts for the front seven but that starts with shutting down the run early. Part of the problem against N.C. State, along with the false starts, is that the Wolfpack running backs were getting decent chunks initially. That, along with some horizontal plays that N.C. State turned upfield for gains took the edge off the rush. If that happens again, Pitt’s in trouble. They need to turn B.C. one dimensional in order to dial up the pass rush and make Jurkovec uncomfortable. Betting they can do it just enough to pull out a 27-24 victory.

There’s nothing more frustrating than watch a QB dink and dunk the football against a really good defense only to go deep and get the catch, the call and a score. Of course you don’t don’t if I’m talking about NC State, BC or PITT.

Haven’t seen the Narduzzi pregame presser but he obviously feels like NC State WR’s were pushing off. Said for the first time he will talk to the refs and ask them if they are going to call push-offs. If not he will instruct his players to do the same. I imagine he was being facetious but you never know with Pat. Point being he wasn’t to happy with the refs last week.

Marinated pork loin chops on the grill, grilled potatoes and grilled corn on the cob for pregame meal. Last week I didn’t play the pregame songs and Eli was distracted. I corrected those problems but it looks like youtube has caught up with me again. So you people play Alan Parsons Project Sirius and Thunderstruck for good luck.

  52. So it looks like if you don’t come to play any team in the ACC can beat any other team other than Clemson and probably ND and maybe Miami. Been like that for a while. Probably going to continue that way, although UNC’s recruiting and Miami’s new coach may change it for the next few years.

Pitt’s O-line and tight end recruiting and baffling results at running back have stopped it from jumping up in class, although it was the defense’s epic fail last week that has caused the current panic.

Anyone’s guess if they right the ship today.

  53. How much is riding on today’s game? If they lose today there is a serious chance that they lose out the rest of the season. They will be the dogs in every game except probably FLST and GT but who knows? As unlikely as that seems this game means everything right now to get confidence back.

makes no sense despite my prediction, and I don’t bet but this is one of those that does not pass the smell test

BTW, the GaTech FR QB is really good and improving and in addition to 3 takeaways, the difference. Cunningham was his usual inaccurate and slow to make decisions…and the Louisville safety thrown out for targeting early didn’t help.
I do like the Tech offense and think their coach will take them to that 2nd tier in the ACC if his recruiting can continue.

  55. Today is a MUST win if Pitt is to salvage anything resembling the kind of BIG season predicted this year by many including myself.

The fortunate thing is that Pitt has a running back named Sibley.

Sibley takes it around end for a crucial TD to help “seal the deal!”

Add your epic music choices and great weather in Laytrobe sure makes for a great day.
Oh yeah, and then the game starts…fingers crossed my friend.

Panthers have the usual > 5 penalties and at least 5 dropped passes.

Bonus Prediction: Phil Jurkovec is on the Steelers roster a couple of years down the road.

  59. OT, but bear with me for a moment. For the oldster music lovers here, I watched “Echo in the Canyon” on Netflix last night. Great documentary about the heydey of Laurel Canyon. Jakob Dylan both interviews a number of key folks from back then and recorded an album of covers. Did a concert of those songs at the Troubadour and really did them justice. The album can be heard on Spotify and Apple Music.

Or is unwritten that you automatically screw Pitt??

BC’s screen passes, QB runs, wheel routes and TE passes give us fits. BC turns the ball over just enough for us to pull out a win.

  65. A couple weeks ago I said take a breath. There was a lot of chest-pounding over a 3-0 start( oh ya, there was). They did what they were expected to do, and now the Ville doesn’t look like all that. They should win today, and most likely will give us some hope. But I will take a breath, realize the d is very good, not great, and that the o is terrible. Sorry, they are really bad.
I look at it this way, either the players aren’t all that good and the coaches have done their best, or the players are that good and the coaching stinks. They have yet to play a game they weren’t favored, and a 5-1 start is still possible, but I’d bet good money against it. The Duzz seems to be a lot like Tomlinson, finding ways to lose games they should easily win, maybe South-side disease.

  66. How many ways can the ACC screw Pitt. Last year we had to open with Virginia when they were loaded and we needed a practice game or two. This year VA stinks so we don’t play them. Also Duke looks real bad, again not on the schedule. No Wake either. Of course we travel to Florida twice, Clemson and GT. None of them have to come north when the weather is foul. Conspiracy theory or luck of the draw?

UNC looks for real but they gave them an easier schedule to make sure.

The ACCN really sucks, trying to grill and listen to the NC State vs UVA game and my audio goes off. BTW, State leading 14-0

Man, you crack me up. If it was someone even slightly negitive you’d have kittens. Syracuse not that bad? The Ville speed.? Whip, the 3-0 coach. Like I said, take a breath. I still cannot predict a winner, but I like ike’s positive approach. Still, no one nationally (who should be considered neutral) is liking Pitt these days. And all of those recruiting classes that were ranked in the 30s and 40s, with all of the hidden gems like Baldonado, could perhaps be considered an accurate indicator of where things stand after all. But I will reserve judgement and wait 5 hours to comment further.
