Austin Peay at Pitt Open Game Thread

Well we made it. Rumor has it there will be some COVID scratches on the Pitt side. You’d like to think our depth overcomes that. The Duzz is undefeated vs FCS, and we should look for that to continue. The only question is whether Pitt covers the spread. #h2p and let’s gooooooo!!!

  1. Peak says Pitt to announce total number of players out for the game without designating those that are out just for Covid. Hope we have enough guys available without having to dip too far into the 3rd team.

  2. As bad as NC looked for the first 2 and a half quarters it looks like they covered the betting spread by winning the game 31 to 6.

  3. Krull and Mack there on the sidelines thus it has to be an injury sit down for both. Kyi Wright at TE it looks like.

    1. Indeed. Half of me wonders if they are holding him out on purpose. The other half says there is probably something wrong with him.

      My biggest concern is tackling

  5. 1sr drop of seasons … but overall offense looks fairly crisp

Pickett looks a little faster this year

Also a lot more relaxed as a passer

1st penalty of season as well. Procedural

  6. For those who don’t have acc network here are my observations during 1st commercial break

Defense looked a tad flat for first few plays but then woke up
Paris ford came to play this year. Again. TFL followed by pick and he’s just making it look easy out there
Offense doing what they want on AP defense.
Run blocking looks a bit better than ly. OL seems to be creating lanes

  7. Continued: addison does indeed look shifty . Questionable drop on that long play. I think he could have stretched or laid out for it. It was a good ball. If that ball is thrown any shorter it would have been a jump ball. Db had tight coverage.

    We are bigger, faster, stronger….

Gov”s (not political), just punted. We didnt look good with our protector backing into addison. Sloppy!

  9. Minor detail but SirVocea Dennis (32) straight up pushed the punt protector into the punter on that punt. Perfectly legal and you have to like that physicality and strength

Kalijah Cancey came in at DT and seemed to be a presence in at least one play after AP got that initial first down.

A better thrown ball probably gets pinnock called for PI on that play…

Expected more from Peay but usually only FCS teams from Missouri Valley & Colonial conferences can really hang with better than good FBS teams.

This ACCN sucks, they never tell you who made the tackle or introduced the starting lineups.

How long will it take Narduzzi to figure out that PITT has twp # 3’s on the field at the same time. Not the first time this happened either. I mean over the years. Dumb!

6 straight TD’s for Pitt. Has that ever happened before?

  17. Can’t see the game. Sounds like the offense is running plays at a fast pace. My question — how is Whip getting the play calls in to KP? Same as last season?

    Go Pitt.

    Like

    1. KP to the sideline for play call. Not even close to a delay penalty that I saw. That might be a nit pic complaint.

I recall one overthrow on a deep ball to Shocky. Other than that, seems like Kenny has been on the money. Probably more drops than bad throws.

Let’s not get too excited over one game. Pitt still has no run game. And Kenny didn’t suddenly become Kenny stabler.

Glad Pitt won but ACC games are the ones that count. This was a scrimmage.

  26. terrible pass by Beville on 4th down. I thought Whipple was going to chew his head when he came to the sideline.

    1. Yep. He had exactly what he wanted. All he needed to do was put a 5 yard pass on the numbers.

  27. Does Whipple really believe no ones ever seen that sideline pass about 2 yards behind the line of scrimmage that he calls about 12 times per game?

  28. Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but I think a team can have the same number on offense and defense. And depending on if there is a defensive player or an offensive player on special teams, like receiving a punt, there could conceivably be the same numbers on the field at the same time.

      1. Ike – We did what we were supposed to do. I don’t get excited like many until we beat teams that are good and have level competition. I’m happy but a win like this doesn’t give us an honest evaluation at all. Im shallow bc I don’t get a hard on for beating basically a D2 team?

Not a good showing so far by the B12 today.

Now, there were no upsets in the B1G Joke conference today, just upset parents.

Who were the other missing players today besides Weaver, Camp, Krull & Mack?

KP shows what he can do when given all day to throw.

Too bad the fans didn’t get to see it first hand.

Sure starting out with the great stats.

Now back to the bubble men!

Worst nightmare about to come true for Pitt

    Like

    1. Now if he could just put some touch on the ball? Not knocking KP, as he played a better game than anticipated. We saw the high point of his efforts. But a few throws didn’t need the 100mph zip that equates to a drop that cannot be blamed on a receiver. Otherwise, he played solid and I’m excited to see what he can do with the rest of the season, if given the chance amidst pandemic.

    1. Pickett was also exceptionable when he decided to run with the ball. I know it was against AP but he certainly is going to give some defensive coordinators problems game planning for the Pitt offense when looking at the film when he ran with the ball.

  38. Hoping we get Weaver, Camp and Krull back when we need them, also that Baldonado has a speedy recovery. Who were the other missing guys? Don’t remember Davis or Pine getting credit for tackles, although the announcers were not saying who made a lot of the tackles.

    2. Dan, Glad you could enjoy the victory. I don’t think any of us expected a pretty much perfect game since we haven’t seen one in recent memory. I feel bad for the guys that can’t even enjoy it when something goes right because it doesn’t fit their narrative.

Obviously it was only a tune up and the real season starts next week, but we have all seen Pitt fall on its face so many times it is great to see it exceed expectations. Too bad we couldn’t save some of those big plays for when we really need them.

Congrats on the diet, I know how tough it is, I have gained 15 thanks to Covid binge eating, its hard to maintain discipline when your cooped up and worried about your own mortality.

Agree that the Covid nightmare is going to screw with everyone’s football plans, and pretty much everything else. I don’t see how we will have fans at the Pete this year unless we have an early successful vaccine and there is slim chance of that.

  42. The OLine proved to NOT be too deep today. The starters will be tested for real next week – the starting five get a pass for this week.

The back-ups besides Zubovic looked less than mediocre. I’ll bet if an starter goes down with an injury or COVID-19, Zubovic will be the next man up. Good thing Kradel can fill in at center in case Jimmy goes down.

One week at a time – I need to take a Peay break…

  43. One last joke – this one is for MM –

An elderly couple is going to their doctor for a checkup. The man goes in first. “How’re you doing?” asks the doctor. “Pretty good,” answers the old man. “I’m eating well, and I’m still in control of my bowels and bladder. In fact, when I get up at night to Peay, the good Lord turns the light on for me.”

The doctor decides not to comment on that last statement, and goes into the next room to check on the man’s wife. “How’re you feeling?” he asks. “I’m doing well,” answers the old woman. “I still have lots of energy and I’m not feeling any pain.” The doctor says, “That’s nice. It sounds like you and your husband are both doing well.

One thing though – your husband said that when he gets up to Peay at night, the good Lord turns the light on for him. Do you have any idea what he means?” “Oh No,” says the woman, “He’s Peaying in the refrigerator again.”

  46. POVers will sleep well tonight after this better than expected win. The second team may have looked a bit sloppy in the second half, but mass substitutions will cause that. It’s not clear who the 2nd team QB is coming out of this game, but Narduzzi should have given him some time with the first team. Overall, not much to find fault with this game, however.

  47. Well my man Ed, PITT was suppose to win by 28 pts but instead won by 55 pts. You read a few comments from the same people that downplays Narduzzi and PITT. No big deal right? imo I saw something different yesterday, a different team with a statement to make. Now let’s hope they carry it over to next week and beyond.

Addison and Wright make those catches and KP has a hall of fame first half. AP begging for mercy while PITT was missing 9 players speaks for itself.
