Austin Peay at Pitt Open Game Thread

Well we made it. Rumor has it there will be some COVID scratches on the Pitt side. You’d like to think our depth overcomes that. The Duzz is undefeated vs FCS, and we should look for that to continue. The only question is whether Pitt covers the spread. #h2p and let’s gooooooo!!!

  1. Peak says Pitt to announce total number of players out for the game without designating those that are out just for Covid. Hope we have enough guys available without having to dip too far into the 3rd team.

Pitt has seven players who will not be in attendance for today’s game against Austin Peay due to COVID-related protocols.

    1. Indeed. Half of me wonders if they are holding him out on purpose. The other half says there is probably something wrong with him.

      My biggest concern is tackling

  3. 1sr drop of seasons … but overall offense looks fairly crisp

Pickett looks a little faster this year

Also a lot more relaxed as a passer

1st penalty of season as well. Procedural

  4. For those who don’t have acc network here are my observations during 1st commercial break

Defense looked a tad flat for first few plays but then woke up
Paris ford came to play this year. Again. TFL followed by pick and he’s just making it look easy out there
Offense doing what they want on AP defense.
Run blocking looks a bit better than ly. OL seems to be creating lanes

  5. Continued: addison does indeed look shifty . Questionable drop on that long play. I think he could have stretched or laid out for it. It was a good ball. If that ball is thrown any shorter it would have been a jump ball. Db had tight coverage.

    We are bigger, faster, stronger….

Gov”s (not political), just punted. We didnt look good with our protector backing into addison. Sloppy!

  7. Minor detail but SirVocea Dennis (32) straight up pushed the punt protector into the punter on that punt. Perfectly legal and you have to like that physicality and strength

Kalijah Cancey came in at DT and seemed to be a presence in at least one play after AP got that initial first down.

    1. I meant on our receiver, not sirvocca. He was well within the rules. Our receiver was interfered with by our blocker back there and could be disastrous. Returner not communicating with blocker….

  8. Looked to me like Shockey wincing and just a slight limp after getting caught from behind on that long pass. Sit him down coach, this game is under control.

    1. True, but it is his first chance to play…

If he continues to struggle, I suspect we see one of the freshmen CBs get a look…

      Go Pitt.

    1. Working on your analysis of recruiting that you asked about yesterday. Using Rivals data. I need help on position changes from offense to defense especially for 15 & 16 classes. May need help on those recruits labeled ATH (Athletes). Anybody can help.

Expected more from Peay but usually only FCS teams from Missouri Valley & Colonial conferences can really hang with better than good FBS teams.

  9. LOL, I’ve had two and that will be about it. I like cooking more than eating although my belly may not prove that theory true?

This ACCN sucks, they never tell you who made the tackle or introduced the starting lineups.

How long will it take Narduzzi to figure out that PITT has twp # 3’s on the field at the same time. Not the first time this happened either. I mean over the years. Dumb!

    1. Unless they kneel at the end of the half they will have scored on every possession in the first half. Wild. Completely unexpected. (And dog-gone delightful)

  10. Can’t see the game. Sounds like the offense is running plays at a fast pace. My question — how is Whip getting the play calls in to KP? Same as last season?

    Go Pitt.

    Like

    1. KP to the sideline for play call. Not even close to a delay penalty that I saw. That might be a nit pic complaint.

I recall one overthrow on a deep ball to Shocky. Other than that, seems like Kenny has been on the money. Probably more drops than bad throws.

  11. Mike. I, not surprisingly, raise my hand. Maybe not even this convincingly. Not bad for a coach that can’t recruit for schitt.

I guess Beville is the backup QB

    PITT has depth everywhere.

OK, going back to my ezy boy.

  12. Yes, PITT is far too good to allow for 15 minutes quarters. Take that Tex! 🙂 Wherever you are hiding during this blowout. Don’t be Nancy. Hey you deserve a little ribbing.

    1. I don’t get excited beating up a bunch of girls. The Cuse will be a slight step up but not much. You heard me say it. Pitt will be 6-0 and the ACC will cancel the season due to covid outbreaks. Koolaid drinkers will crown pitt as national champions.

Let’s not get too excited over one game. Pitt still has no run game. And Kenny didn’t suddenly become Kenny stabler.

Glad Pitt won but ACC games are the ones that count. This was a scrimmage.

  13. Does Whipple really believe no ones ever seen that sideline pass about 2 yards behind the line of scrimmage that he calls about 12 times per game?

  14. Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but I think a team can have the same number on offense and defense. And depending on if there is a defensive player or an offensive player on special teams, like receiving a punt, there could conceivably be the same numbers on the field at the same time.

Our 1st string team looked great. This is a terrific opportunity to give our backups some

  18. Dayon Hays can replace Baldonado right now and Pitt wouldn’t a beat. Yellen we could send back to California and bring back Patti who looked much better behind the center position last year.

    1. Patti I believe was injured according to Narduzzi. But I think PN just wanted to see how Yellen and Beville looked behind center this week. Keep Picket healthy is all i can say.

    1. so what’s the beef bud? PITT won by 55? Not good enough? You would think it would be good enough to keep the criticism down at least until next weekend? No, no great shakes beating the Peays but some weren’t so sure about that. Give credit……….. it’s not that hard. Makes you look shallow.

      1. Ike – We did what we were supposed to do. I don’t get excited like many until we beat teams that are good and have level competition. I’m happy but a win like this doesn’t give us an honest evaluation at all. Im shallow bc I don’t get a hard on for beating basically a D2 team?

        1. I’m with Mark on this one. Regardless of the score, I’m reserving judgment until we play a few ACC opponents. Too many times we’ve been given false hope. Some coaches earn the benefit of the doubt over time. I’m not there yet.

          1. That’s the point Eric, reserve judgement and not poo poo a 55-0 win, I agree. If PITT is supposed to blow a lower class team out and they do……….. you say yeah. It’s the poo pooing that’s not fair. 🙂 Am I saying poo pooing too much?

  20. #23 Iowa State and their Purdy QB were way overrated. Beaten today handedly by Louisiana.

Not a good showing so far by the B12 today.

Now, there were no upsets in the B1G Joke conference today, just upset parents.

Who were the other missing players today besides Weaver, Camp, Krull & Mack?

  21. It has been a long, long, long time since Pitt was able to empty its bench for a whole second half and never with the mercy rule.

KP shows what he can do when given all day to throw.
Exactly what a warm-up game should be.

Too bad the fans didn’t get to see it first hand.

Sure starting out with the great stats.

Now back to the bubble men!

    Sorry Dan,lol

Worst nightmare about to come true for Pitt

    Like

    1. Now if he could just put some touch on the ball? Not knocking KP, as he played a better game than anticipated. We saw the high point of his efforts. But a few throws didn’t need the 100mph zip that equates to a drop that cannot be blamed on a receiver. Otherwise, he played solid and I’m excited to see what he can do with the rest of the season, if given the chance amidst pandemic.

    1. Pickett was also exceptionable when he decided to run with the ball. I know it was against AP but he certainly is going to give some defensive coordinators problems game planning for the Pitt offense when looking at the film when he ran with the ball.

  22. Hoping we get Weaver, Camp and Krull back when we need them, also that Baldonado has a speedy recovery. Who were the other missing guys? Don’t remember Davis or Pine getting credit for tackles, although the announcers were not saying who made a lot of the tackles.

  23. Missing WO’s Krull, Mack, Tipton and Wayne I believe. On defense Weaver and Camp were two key players out. Baldonado may be missing for quite some time IMO.

    1. Cutting the second half to 20 minutes reminded me of games back in my day when Pitt was so over-matched that the teams mutually decided to let the clock keep running for the second half….

      Go Pitt.

    2. Dan, Glad you could enjoy the victory. I don’t think any of us expected a pretty much perfect game since we haven’t seen one in recent memory. I feel bad for the guys that can’t even enjoy it when something goes right because it doesn’t fit their narrative.

Obviously it was only a tune up and the real season starts next week, but we have all seen Pitt fall on its face so many times it is great to see it exceed expectations. Too bad we couldn’t save some of those big plays for when we really need them.

Congrats on the diet, I know how tough it is, I have gained 15 thanks to Covid binge eating, its hard to maintain discipline when your cooped up and worried about your own mortality.

Agree that the Covid nightmare is going to screw with everyone’s football plans, and pretty much everything else. I don’t see how we will have fans at the Pete this year unless we have an early successful vaccine and there is slim chance of that.

  26. The OLine proved to NOT be too deep today. The starters will be tested for real next week – the starting five get a pass for this week.

The back-ups besides Zubovic looked less than mediocre. I’ll bet if an starter goes down with an injury or COVID-19, Zubovic will be the next man up. Good thing Kradel can fill in at center in case Jimmy goes down.

One week at a time – I need to take a Peay break…

  27. One last joke – this one is for MM –

An elderly couple is going to their doctor for a checkup. The man goes in first. “How’re you doing?” asks the doctor. “Pretty good,” answers the old man. “I’m eating well, and I’m still in control of my bowels and bladder. In fact, when I get up at night to Peay, the good Lord turns the light on for me.”

The doctor decides not to comment on that last statement, and goes into the next room to check on the man’s wife. “How’re you feeling?” he asks. “I’m doing well,” answers the old woman. “I still have lots of energy and I’m not feeling any pain.” The doctor says, “That’s nice. It sounds like you and your husband are both doing well.

One thing though – your husband said that when he gets up to Peay at night, the good Lord turns the light on for him. Do you have any idea what he means?” “Oh No,” says the woman, “He’s Peaying in the refrigerator again.”

    1. Richard — I’m afraid he called the game as if he were calling a game on TV. Billy gets things wrong, but at least you know what yard-line the ball got to and how it got there…

      Go Pitt.

    2. Richard, you and me could be better than the ACCN idiot announcers. Pathetic that for the first game and new players they never gave starting lineups and hardly mentioned who made the tackles.

As far as radio goes, that’s the gig for Billy. “There’s a ball loose on the ground, wait the QB kept the ball” No one like Billy.

  30. POVers will sleep well tonight after this better than expected win. The second team may have looked a bit sloppy in the second half, but mass substitutions will cause that. It’s not clear who the 2nd team QB is coming out of this game, but Narduzzi should have given him some time with the first team. Overall, not much to find fault with this game, however.

    Like

  31. Well my man Ed, PITT was suppose to win by 28 pts but instead won by 55 pts. You read a few comments from the same people that downplays Narduzzi and PITT. No big deal right? imo I saw something different yesterday, a different team with a statement to make. Now let’s hope they carry it over to next week and beyond.

Addison and Wright make those catches and KP has a hall of fame first half. AP begging for mercy while PITT was missing 9 players speaks for itself.
