The Pitt News recently released the results of a Pitt athletics fan survey, and 60% of respondents were students.  Well since many of you good readers haven’t picked up a copy of the Pitt News since the mid 1970’s, I’ve decided to recreate the poll right here on the POV, with a couple of POV-specific twists.  I’ll publish the results and contrast them with the Pitt news in a few days.

Try not to be too crotchety.

Also I left out the the following questions because I just don’t have time to tally all the write in answers, but they are great discussion topics for the blog.  So please tell me your:

  1. Great idea MM, I’m going out on a limb but I think your poll will have some very different answers than what the students provided. However, FWIW, my responses were dead on with the students. I’m hoping that it’s because I’m young at heart and not because I didn’t gain the wisdom expected of a Boomer.

    As for Mt. Rushmore, I propose two one for defense and one for offense, since it’s always unfair to try to pit players whose offensive skills were so much easier to marvel than defensive players.

    Offense: Dorsett, Marino, Fitzgerald, Fralic (killing me not to have room for Ditka)
    Defense: Green, Donald, Reavis, Doleman

    Marshall Goldberg led Pitt to two national championships, but leaving him off because I’m limiting my selections to players I watched play.

    Although I think Jackie did more with more, Johnny did more with less. Having said that, Jackie’s team could’ve should’ve won at least three more national championships, they were that good.

    Most underrated- UPitt, if not for his bragging about his career nobody would have ever heard of him. 🙂 Gosh sometimes a comment screams for a joke.

  15. I don’t know that I can split up my Pitt Mt Rushmore. I’d like the entire 1910 FB team – they posted a 282-0 score for the season. UNSCORED UPON, and 30+ points per game (beat psux 11-0. JoePa was psux assistant coach in charge of team morals). Oh, that we could see video highlights of that season. BTW, they shared the National Championship with Harvard!

  19. I’ve been skeptical for a while, but now I’ve become convinced there will not be a 2020 college football season for our Pitt Panthers. Too many people involved, including older coaches.

    But the biggest reason is that a lot of people, for whatever reason, won’t wear masks. I saw a recent photo when the players returned to campus. Coach Duzz was standing with about 15 players and only one person, one of the players, was wearing a mask.

    Makes no sense. It’s a shame.

  24. The poll also asked the best road venue.

    Well the two worst are morganhole and creepy valley. Mainly due to their fans.

    The best has been Notre Dame. Prior to the renovations. If you are a football historian, you can’t beat south bend.

    Now there are some places I’d like to visit like clemson and Virginia tech.

    A&M is a great experience

    1. I will agree with you Tex on A&M. A football game there is an awesome Experience. A lot of traditions around the games. Went there for a Pitt game when Fitz played. Pitt won. Walking out of the stadium, A&M folks stopped us a number of times to congratulate us on a “great game.” Class act. Fifteen years later our daughter completed undergraduate and grad degrees there. A&M has a extraordinarily strong culture. Pitt will never ever get there.

    1. I think the hotels and restaurants available on football weekends are incomparable for visiting fans.
      Unlimited tickets for visiting fans. Ribfest on opening day is pretty hard to beat. Where else can you see major league baseball the same weekend, sometimes the same day? A science center next door, a casino a block away? A boat ride to and from the stadium. The great hall with Steeler and Pitt memorabilia. A history center within walking distance. Plenty to see and do for visiting fans.

      1. Fans that I’ve spoken with are most impressed by the facilities. It’s a pro stadium so they are used to bleachers and lacking amenities.

        They are also impressed by downtown.

        And have never heard them say pitt fans were rude.

        But I have also never heard a visiting fan say anything about our campus. That should strike a nerve with everyone here.

  26. I don’t know if he is deserving of MOST under rated (UPitt seems to have that locked up), but I always thought Ralph Cindrich deserved a lot more recognition than he got. He prolly would have gotten it if he could have stayed away from the injury bug! A Dick Butkus-type LB.

    1. Ralph was an All American. I remember a picture in the Pittsburgh Press showing him tackling a Syracuse player to prevent a touchdown. Now a lawyer sports agent if still in the game.

  27. Attended the home PITT football game against Texas A&M early 2000th right after the stadium opened. Ran into many A&M folks who were the nicest visiting fans I have ever come across. They kept on saying how wonderful Heinz Field was and I kept on saying how much I was disappointed in it. Point being… those folks were great, gracious and polite people.

          1. OK – Not a big deal. Just an article on ESPN by a writer I like – Bill Connelly. He has done a review of the ACC Atlantic division by team. Just a really good read & mentions names that are in my ACC review.

      When players hit players the grunts could be dangerous if a player is infected. Great problem for Pitt’s medical and bioengineering folks to “tackle.”

  30. Players and coaches will need to get comfortable breathing and sweating on each other in order for football to actually begin. I don’t have a good feeling about this, and thought there would be more COVID-19 treatments available by now. They can start conditioning now, but full contact? I just don’t know…

        1. Texas is not doing so good right now either. Capacity is restricted to 75 percent during this phase. Really should have stayed around 33 percent in hindsight. Opened too soon and too fast.

      2. Outdoors. Most people wearing masks. Moving and not stagnant. But still too early to know.

        Inside, no masks and close together for hours…bad idea.

        I can see football at 25 percent capacity limits. Don’t see how any indoor sport can be played with fans.

        1. It’s not going to matter if you open quickly or not. There is no cure. As soon as you open up numbers are going to spike. If people don’t wash their hands social distance and wear N95 masks numbers are going to spike. There is not going to be a complete football season. It’s just the way it is.

I can remember walking to the FB game near two Texas A&M fans, and we just walked over the Clemente bridge and down to the river walk towards Heinz, and one of them said “wow, this is really great, isn’t it?” They were really impressed with PNC Park and the North Shore environment … and back then, there weren’t the Betttis bar and the ampitheater

    1. That’s because their stadium is landlocked surrounded by parking lots. And flat. It’s on campus but blah. Fans make the experience there. College station is just a hick town no different from state college. Pittsburgh is so much better. Call me arrogant but it’s true. Far more cosmopolitan and cultured Pittsburgh is. And character.

  36. Michaelangelo, your comment gives us hope that this virus can be tamed before football season. However, I’d say that the states didn’t open too soon or too fast. The problem is that people, more specifically younger people, do not think that they should have to wear masks and stay 6 feet apart. Just go into the restaurants and bars and you will see people packed together, shoulder to shoulder, thinking the rules don’t apply to them. ike is right that people just don’t care that they can pass it on to others.

  48. Nick Watney became the 1st pro golfer to test positive yesterday. He previously had discussions with Rory McIroy and Brooks Koepka, whom I believe are the top 2 ranked golfers in the world.

    But IMO, the larger issue is that Watney passed a C19 test on Wednesday. The average time for symptoms to appear is 4-6 days after exposure. Why his test on Wednesday didn’t come out positive is just another troubling aspect.

    I suppose that he may have gone out to a So Carolina restaurant (where masks aren’t required) on Wed or Thurs night, and then showed immediate symptoms, but not likely

    2. I believe Larry broadcast a few games when Billy was obligated for an away Steeler game and once when Billy had some medical issue. He did ok. I wasn’t overly impressed by his style (and would prefer someone else if the replacement were to be permanent) but, I didn’t find myself annoyed or wanting to pull my hair out by how the broadcast sounded. I’d go for Pompeani. Anybody else got some good suggestions?

      1. Pomp is too monotone for my liking. One Punch Tunch and Wolf would be much better. Throw in Scooter as a sideline reporter and now we are in business.

        1. Fair point about Pomp. I would love Wolf! In fact, I would prefer him to do color over Tunch. I never enjoyed Tunch. First, he feels the need to explain every play. A good drinking game is to drink every time he says “you know Billy..” or some variation of it. He says it after almost every play. You would be soused before you reached the end of the first quarter! Also, he tries too hard to be funny and keep up with Wolf. I don’t find him funny and at times it is painful to listen to. Different strokes, I suppose.

  56. Ralph Cindrich is one of my favorite Pitt players of all time. He was known as the soul of the Pitt defense at the time, and managed to become an All American LB during the DePasqua years, which was no small feat. Pitt was 3-8 in his last year, and he managed to get drafted in the 5th round when you can be sure no NFL scouts were hanging around this horrible team and there was very little tape available at the time. He had 1-2nd round talent, and would have made a lot more money if Pitt had been competitive at the time.

    1. I have written before how many hours of rehab Cindrich put in at Trees on his knee(s).

      This was well before arthroscopy or the quality PT we have today. He did it pretty much on his own.

      If he would have played after Freddie Fu arrived who knows how much he would have accomplished.

      Of course that goes for a lot of guys that played in that era. Knee injuries were mostly career ending back then.

  61. I really like Pat Bostick’s work when he’s in the booth. He tells it like it is, even when it’s negative commentary for the Panthers.

    1. Pat was being groomed for a special role in the directors office under Barnes. Not sure what’s going on with heather. But pat seems to have what it takes as an administrator. His quarterback play left something to be desired though. Could he be riddicks understudy next year?

  62. Billy also enjoyed his chow. I remember being at a Jamie Dixon chalk-talk event where Billy was glued to the gratis buffet table. That was about a decade ago and Billy was morbidly obese then.

    I don’t mind a good homer myself, within reason. Besides being mistake ridden, Billy took the homer role to an extreme. He had the plus/minus 2 rule. If Pitt runs the ball and Billy said the gain was six yards, deduct two yards. If Pitt’s opponent ran the ball and Billy said the gain was six yards, add two yards

  63. Pete Suder was an outstanding baseball player for Pitt and was buddies with Mike Ditka – both were from the Aliquippa area. I worked with Pete for several years.

    Quite an athletic family, these Suder’s. Pete’s father played Major League Baseball for the Philly Athletics for many years (2nd base). Pete’s son, Rick Suder, played BB at Duquesne — he averaged an impressive 17 and 20 points per game in his last two seasons as a deadly outside shooter. I remember sitting with Pete watching Rick play in the Roundball Classic at the Arena.

    Anyway, there was an article the other day that Duquesne BB is showing interest in HS sophomore Peter Suder, who is Rick’s son and Pete’s grandson. Peter is a 6-4 shooting guard. The Suder’s are no longer local – Peter plays at an Indiana HS.

    Maybe the kid goes where his father went; or maybe Jeff Capel should take a look and if he likes what he sees, see if the kid can be persuaded to go where his grandfather went???

    1. A OCS or what it should be known as, a multi purpose center, will not increase attendance once the novelty wears off. Will not result in a flood of 5 star recruits.

      But it will help connect students, old and new fans, and alumni with the university. The connection is key since it impacts the brand, the fan experience and donations.

      As well as provide homes to multiple programs and be a venue that can be used 24/7 and 365 days a year. It is a revenue engine. Think Ferrari.

      Pitt is revenue poor today…Ford Focus. If Pitt wants top 50 Directors Cup rankings, it needs the money to hire the best and to play in the best

      Does anyone really think Pitt has the best today in regards to coaches and facilities?

      You get what you pay for.

    1. That is a great article. My Dad took me to my first Pitt Game that year. I don’t even remember who we played. Kennedy’s assassination took the wind out of everyone’s sails that year. Still the most shocking day of my life.

  70. with the pick up of the transfer guard, Capel now has no holes. There is quality depth at all 5 positions. Haven’t see that at Pitt for a while. The only thing lacking is experience

    1. You can say the same thing for the women’s team. Both BB coaches have done an outstanding job of transforming the rosters to ACC quality.

      Agree that all they need now is experience- plus keep adding talent, of course…

    2. There is depth and enough for Capel to be smart and possibly redshirt Max and Jeffress. Playing these kids a couple minutes a game would make no sense considering the upperclassmen who will eat the minutes at the three and five spots. If the transfer can get a waiver and play immediately there would be 11 players at Capel’s disposal if he decided to redshirt some players.

      Pretty exciting times for hoops after four years of just brutal basketball.

        1. My thought is since Jeffress is 17 years old he just might be at a disadvantage physically and playing him a few minutes here and there isn’t worth a year’s eligibility. Of course William could be incredible and one of the best players and obviously no redshirt if that is the case.

  72. I’ve been re-watching some Pitt 2019 football games. There are any number of things realized from this effort (actually it was a pleasure because I only watch games Pitt won – LOL). Here’s one: Maurice Ffrench was a critical player on the 2019 team. Underrated by Pitt fans. I am sure Whipple would agree. I don’t get him not getting drafted.

    1. I’d say Maurice was critical. He had something in his eye near the end of the Miami game and couldn’t field a punt, so the walk on #83 went in. All he did was run away from the ball that hit at the 26 and rolled to the 9-yard line. Tack on the 15-yard penalty on Miami and instead of having the ball at the 41 Pitt had it at the 24 and ran it three times as Whipple got very conservative.

      If the ball was at the 41 things could have been different and Pitt ended up losing. Those little things that Pitt always seems to do to lose games. The defense also wilted versus a bad Miami QB who marched the Canes right down the field.

  79. Capel probably hopes to get Sibande eligible this year due to the shortage of scholarships next year and beyond. If he is redshirted he would then take up a scholarship in 2021.

  80. a Father’s day note … when I was around 9 years old, my dad took me to my 1st Steelers’ game and I got to see Jimmy Brown play. (Although you can never repay your dad) About 10 years or so later, I treated him to the Steelers’ 1st ever playoff game, which turned out to be The Immaculate Reception game.

  82. Premier league playing without fans. Pumping in crowd noise. Seems to work. Various tarps and cardboard cutouts on the seats.

  84. Out of town for a couple days. Did Billy throw a molatov “cocktail” at a police car. If this is Billy’s first DUI it will be ARD and expunged, no criminal record. When and whether he should be replaced for competence is another matter but this DUI stuff is overblown.
