Pitt received their 16th verbal last night, shortly after they received their 15th verbal earlier in the day.
Khalil Anderson is a 5.5 three-star on rivals and hails from Atlanta, Georgia. He’s the second Georgia commit so far in the 2021 class and the fifth overall in the last two years.
Khalil has 16 total offers, and they are almost evenly split between Power 5 and Group of 5. Lets have a look:
Power 5 offers (7):
- Duke – Shows he’s got the brains
- Kansas – Les Miles keeps trying to tap the south. I wonder how much success he’s having?
- Kansas State – Flipped a GA recruit from Pitt last year. I would expect that to be the exception rather than the rule. Just can’t see the draw of Manhattan, Kansas.
- Michigan State – What the heck are they doing down here?
- Syracuse – Nice try fellas.
- Wake Forest – Second recruit in two hours that Pitt beat Wake on (you can say the same about Syracuse too)
- Pitt – Alle-genee-Alle-genee-genac-genac-genac!
Non Power 5 offers (9):
- Akron – MAC school? Box Checked.
- Appalachian State – Nice little program they run up in Boone
- Coastal Carolina – Anyone surprised?
- Liberty – Yup
- Middle Tennessee State – Meh
- South Alabama – Meh
- Tennessee State – HBCU that boasts 11 Black College national championships, the most recent in 1982. However they finished just 7th in the Ohio Valley Conference last year, with a record of 3-9.
- Troy – Neal Brown used to coach here and posted 3 straight 10-win seasons (out of four total). He now coaches at West Virginia and should just about be rounding them into form when they face Pitt.
- Tulane – You know as a parent, I’m not sure I’d want my child to go to college in New Orleans because how much studying would they really get done? Great place to visit for a bowl game though or a weekend for sure.
While Anderson has a pretty sold list of Power 5 offers, he’s definitely more of an under the radar recruit. That may be because he has less-than-ideal size at 5’10” 175. If you take a look at his film he has athleticism to burn though and plays bigger than his listed size. He also seems to have a nose for the ball, so you can see why Pitt likes him.

Also, before I sign off here. I wanted to take a minute to break down the current recruiting class by position.
DB: 4 (including Anderson who is listed as an “Athlete”). Developmental / “Diamond in the Rough” class here. Three 5.5’s and a 5.4. The staff seems to be going for size, with three DB’s checking in at 6’0″ or more.
DE: 2 – One is four-star Nahki Johnson though. The other one is two-star Hampton, VA recruit Trevion Stevenson who is listed as a linebacker.
DT: 0 – This is somewhat surprising, although the DT room is pretty deep. I’d think they sign at least one developmental guy though.
LB: 1 – Preston Lavant from Georgia. Three star 5.5 but reminds me a lot of Kylan Johnson. I would be surprised if they don’t target at least one more linebacker for this class.
OL: 4 – When is the last time Pitt has four offensive lineman commits prior to June 15th? Probably never. We are talking a 5.4, two 5.5’s and one 5.7 here, but OL development is an arcane science. I would like them to pick up one more, even if he’s just a developmental guy.
QB: 1 – Nate Yarnell out of Austin, Texas. Whipple has his man. Time will tell if he’s as good as we hope he is.
RB: 2 – A power back and a scatback, both out of Virgnia. Safe to say Pitt is done at this position.
TE: 0 – Pitt’s Tight End Recruiting woes continue… At what point do we have to cut bait on Tim Salem?
WR: 2 – a 5.5 and a 5.6, although Jaden Bradley has great height at 6’4″.
The conventional wisdom is that Pitt will take 25 recruits in this class, which leaves room for nine more.
If I had to break it down I’d say it probably looks like this, although keep in mind that the Duzz is usually good for one or two four-star surprises late in the recruiting cycle and they could come in at any position.
DT: 2 – Because you just want to keep the pipeline flowing.
OL: 1 – Pitt should recruit 5 OL every single year.
TE: 2 – If they can get two to sign…
LB: 2 – Although it’s possible that they recruit a bigger safety and convert him
WR: 2 – Whipple and Beatty are clearly restocking the WR room and there will be playing time and targets to go around for talented guys. All we can do is hope they sell another four-star (or two) on the dream.

Nice summary. I generally agree with your projected numbers, although I think 1 additional WR is enough. I’d use another slot for a 3rd LB or 3rd DT (take the best available). Whatever the mix, I hope PN starts to become even more selective filling these remaining slots. We already have a solid, if not spectacular class. Go hard after a few elite levels guys and hope you land one or two.
Regarding Salem, I ll answer your question regarding Salem….if we whiff yet again on at least one quality high school recruit at TE, then Salem should be gone. You simply can’t afford a position coach who can’t land anyone as a high school recruit.

This is an odd recruiting year with travel so limited. I just don’t see this as being a top 20 group. With 9 spots left there may be a couple of surprises to whet the appetite, but other than the QB recruit I don’t see any real potential stars here.

My guess is Salem will not be gone any time soon. Narduzzi would have canned him by now as he has done with other assistants. Salem recruits well, just not at his position, which is very odd.

I see some fairly decent recruits in this class but don’t see many game changers here. That QB does entice me, but other than that… I’m hoping that Narduzzi is going for raw talent knowing that they will have at least one year in back up roles.

I think we’ll see a few of these guys’ ratings bump up but it is a fairly common Pitt class regardless of the coach. The QB can make or break the class. If he pans out it will be huge.

Well if we are stuck on the Rivals ratings. (which I’m not) ……. They seem to think PITT is doing quite well in recruiting. But to be consistent…… I don’t give a crap about what these recruiting services think.

It’s a numbers game Ike. Look at the average stars. Better yet look at distributions. Percentage of class rated 5.7 and above. Rivals may not be perfect but they are still the best in the business. It’s 100 degrees down here today and I wouldn’t buy ice cream from Narduzzi. I consider myself a 4 star. Guys 30 years younger than me see the same thing. We have a problem Houston. 🚀

Like it or not we are able to recruit to 7-5 and 8-4. If we catch lightning in a bottle or it all comes together in an uncommon way we might hit ten wins every 4th or 5th year. That’s reality, accept it. Unless Pitt starts “playing the game” it’s never going to change

And to add to what I said. It could be a LOT worse. Even at an average rank of 40, Pitt is better than 2/3 of the college teams out there. You lived through the times when Pitt was in that bottom 2/3 tex. Of all people you should appreciate where we are today.

I appreciate the research w, but all those 2 stars that panned out left us with an overall record of 104-87 record over the same stretch. Hardly above average and just very middle of the road at best.
Ike doesn’t believe rankings because Pitt has been in the 40’s in rankings for the last 15 years and has performed like they were ranked. I wouldnt say the rankers missed on the program. Maybe they missed on a player here and there, but not the team. You all can cherry pick a player here and there, but the team has been mediocre and the recruiting rank supports the mediocre results.
Sometimes 2 stars are forced to lead the team in tackles because they are the weakest link in the defense and the opposition just goes after them. That is opposing coaches jobs. Find the weakness and exploit it.

Max Gruder…always a half step late to that tackle. Yet he led the team. Love Mike Carrara but long way between him and Kylan Johnson. With that being said there have been two stars (or less) that have been impact players. What would be interesting would be to look at two – star “hit rate” although at the end of the day the record that huff lists above is all the evidence you need. I’m all for optimism but let’s keep those expectations in check

I’m still not going to sit next to someone in line at my barber. He can take me at my appointment time and he can wear a mask. Those are my rules. If he doesn’t follow them, I find a barber who will.
What worries me is that people get lax on social distancing while the virus is ‘hibernating’ this summer. And then it comes back this fall and we are unprepared and things shut down again.

Imagine you are given the highlight videos for say just 200 high school defensive backs. All of them are 5-9 to 6-1 and weigh 170 to 180. You are asked to rank them from 1 to 200.
Think of how ridiculously impossible it would be to get this right — if there even is a right.
Yes, there would be, I don’t know, maybe 25 who would stand out and you would label as elite. But there would also be maybe 150 who were largely indistinguishable and totally interchangeable, and maybe 25 who would appear deficient to the rest.
Think about it. How much can a bunch of guys who are roughly 5-10 and 175 pounds differ in their physical abilities. Maybe their 40 times vary from 4.5 to 4.8. The 4.5 guys are elite; the 4.8 guys are a reach; and there are a ton of guys in-between.
You can read the sports page and know who the elite high-school playmakers are. The task of ranking players as 5.4 to >5.8 is quit a challenge, especially after you get past guys like Paris Ford.

… I think a 104-87 record is commendable. And I can’t emphasize enough that in the last 5 years, Pitt is likely the only P5 program with a better conference record than OOC record.

PS – why you think Pitt should be better than programs like UNC, Ga Tech, NC State, Va Tech, UVa and Miami is beyond me. Maybe you can do some research and see that all of them has had better than or just as good FB programs as has Pitt in recent history. For example, did you know that Ga tech won the national title in 1990? and Phillip Rivers and Russell Wilson (3 years) QBed at NC State.
and all of these schools have much better FB talent in their backyards than does Pitt

Duke now has 12 entries into the transfer portal. 9 are grad transfer with immediate eligibility. 10 have found new homes.
They have added 3 transfers (2 grads). Most notably Chase Brice who backed up Trevor Lawrence for the last two years.

I have been saying for years that Pitt Fans have unrealistic expectations for their football team.
Have said we need an easier OOC, only to hear from the same guys that complain about win-loss, that playing tough teams is good and what they want to see. They want it both ways.
There has always been the “fire the coach” that thinks a Jackie Sherrill is just around the corner, a guy that will recruit 5 stars and be a superb game day coach. When the pundits say we are likely to get 6 or 7 wins, the fans pooh pooh a coastal trophy. It is never enough.
Most of all we have fans that have no respect for the competition and expect easy wins over all coastal teams as if they don’t have the same level of recruits, coaches and desire to win. They critisize the level of recruits, and coaching prowess but at the same time expect 10 wins from them.
When Pitt does get its 10 win season, it still won’t be enough to satisfy them.

MajorM, while I totally agree with your point about rating and separating kids, there are some things that develop on their own, some that you can influence and some that you don’t
something like a RELIABLE 40 time being 4.5 versus 4.8 isn’t going to change much whereas height by senior year is what it is yet weight due to strength training and diet will change in every player depending on the program, their commitment and their genetics. in this same category is quickness and agility which imo can be improved a bit but are more difficult to develop
that said, if i were in charge of recruiting these kids, if it possible to get accurate data, i’d look at their physical numbers and film over 3 years and then try to project where they fall in the development curve. i wonder how many kids these coaches and recruiters look at and get that kind of data to review.

Pitts talent doesn’t have to be back yard. There is plenty of talent with 500 miles. And plenty of left over talent in Florida where pitt has been successful.
I think many just need to face the fact that Narduzzi is a mediocre recruiter. Pitts recruiting rankings are in the 40’s. Narduzzi gets top 40 pay. Pitts saragin and rpi rankings are in the 50’s.
And Pitt has a top third spend for football in the ACC now. Yet most on here think pitt can’t do better. I have a 20 handicap in golf. I’m resigned to that’s how it’s always going to be.

But take heart …. last year Rivals only had three 4-stars+ plus in the entire state …. 3. (Pitt got one, PSU none). This year, the number has increased by 300% … 9. Too bad six of them are from the Phila area. Pitt does have one PA 4-star in hand and may well get another one … but is likely not being considered by the rest … and why should they. (let me ignore Clemson, PSU, OSU, etc so I can play ina half empty stadium for a team that is rarely on national TV)

Those elite schools can and will scoop up most of them. All pitt has to do is find one of them. Find one 4 star in Ohio, pa, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland. That’s five elites. Do that over the course of 4 years and if you’ve got a half decent qb and a coach that’s just decent, you’ll be rolling in top 20 final rankings. If you fix the ooc and have some luck, you’re knocking on top ten

I see progress, certainly not as fast or strong as many want it, and not a straight line. I hope they get to prove it this year, but still have my doubts. Things are looking better but the virus hasn’t gone dormant.

A coaches pay is relevant. Top 40 pay means top 40 performance. Pitt is getting generally what it’s paying for and Narduzzi runs a clean program as the cherry on top. So the BoT I’m sure is very pleased that money isn’t being wasted and they have a brand that stands for clean, stable and whatever the word is for the area between average and good.
I personally want to see better on the field performance. That starts with a stable coaching staff and better recruiting. I want the pitt brand to be known for very good football performance. That’s consistent top 20. That’s not impossible.
Many of you think it is and have just given up. It’s hard work but the solutions are there. There’s no constraint that is immovable.

and to MichaelM, how it plays out imo will be pockets of outbreak and current events(riots/protests) will certainly add to that but it is continuing to be clear that the older and comorbid need to be kept separate. with relatively rare exception the young and healthy will not have a bad outcome.
the problem will be maintaining the needed measures in places where it takes extra effort including mass transit, urban environments, crowded events and living quarters, etc and then of course the governmental response in reaction to the data and outbreaks….until there is a vaccine.
i think we will be in the woods for a while but the woods are far less mysterious and if in fact it were woods rather than city, we’d be far better off

The true test comes when the kids go back to school. I think colleges can handle it. I still worry about the coaching staff and profs and older support. Keeping the kids on campus like Notre dames approach is key. Not sure how high schools are going to do it. I think that’s the big risk and unknown. I think they plan a combo of online learning and classroom. Go to class two days with half your classmates, online learn for the other 3. Don’t know how elementary schools are going to work. And all it takes is for one kid to catch the virus and panic will ensue.

Pitt is a highly dense urban landscape with business and hospital transients. Far more challenging. But I like no fall break and you end thanksgiving. You do not want students heading home for extended periods of time and then coming back. But I still don’t know the plan when students go home for a 30 day winter break and then come back in peak flu season.

Unless you are Alabama, Clemson, tOSU, football is largely cyclical, you build a team that gets better with maturity, get lucky with a few players and have a better than normal season. It ha been a long time since Pitt has had as many returning quality starters as they do this year. When was the last time you could name as many marquis talents? When was the last time we had as experience a QB? A D-line that is as deep with talent as we have seen for many years? An exceptional Safety with solid supporting talent? An O-line that isn’t playing together for the first time?
Sure there are still some major question marks, mostly about offense, but the team is no doubt peaking this year. Will they live up to their promise? Time will tell, but I hope we get to see QB’s running for lives, and not ours for a change.

Heck, even PSU is not getting local 4-stars …. no PA 4/5 star last year …. and thus far, none of the 9 this year …. while OSU has 2, Georgia, Clemson and Pitt has 1.
OSU is outdoing PSU in Eastern PA …. how in the heck can you expect Pitt to outdo OSU in PA or Ohio?

I’ll disagree on people being smart. Some are. Others not so much. And despite the smart people, Texas cases and hospitalizations are not trending down. I do worry about the Fall when the virus awakens and kids go back to school. And I’m the least paranoid person I know. But I know risk given my background. Risk being the unknown with all the upside and downside. Much is still not known about this virus. And in this case, not knowing can literally kill you.

On paper PITT has one of their better team in years. Now that has to transfer over to the grass at Heinz Field. I really just do not see the fuss about Narduzzi’s recruiting or lack there of. All the criticism of not having many players drafted to the NFL will be long forgotten after this coming 10 win season. Then what are we going to complain about?

If this was a normal season I would say maybe ten. Experienced quarterback. Speed at receiver. Some promising backs. A somewhat experienced line. Decent special teams. Solid D. Second year under Whipple.
But kids and coaches are going to miss games. Some teams might have to forfeit games given outbreaks. Practices will be run differently. Too many unknown variables. I can honestly say it will come down to a variable I don’t like to use…luck.

Been pushing my wife to get rid of the dining room furniture and move in there so I don’t even need to do that. What makes this comment PITT sports related? It raises the question….. I’m trying to simplify my life so why be a PITT football fan and comment on the POV?

@ Tex – If Covid19 turns into Covid 20 and businesses are not prepared, it is on them. One of the things leaders will find out is that their respective companies either pivoted well or didn’t. For those that pivoted well, I would expect some layoffs because the new work model identified folks that may bot have actually made a difference during their work day and those positions will be rightfully eliminated. With respect to businesses being sued, there will be litigation for sure, but that’s okay.
Recently (last week), I counseled several large organizations to not use contact and trace technology at their workplace. Why? When people use apps to track where they are, it becomes a tool to actually prove liability against an employer/organization as the plaintiff can prove exactly where they were every second while at an organization. Some will use the technology and the technology will be used against them in litigation. Stupid move. The orgs that require app registration are tinkering on the lines of privacy as well.
@gordon – yes, when Pitt wins 10 games, there definitely should be a push to win the 11th, right? It’s the mindset of non-champions to say we are happy with 10 wins. For me, a 10 win season would be great, but it is just a stop on the way to win 11 and 12, etc. Why be giddy about 10 wins. If you arent getting better, youre getting worse.
@w – Narduzzi’s’ record in the coastal is a testament of how poor the other teams have been in the coastal. This has been evident for years. The coastal is terrible and always has been. Of course his record will be better against them. When was the last time a coastal team finished in the top 10 AP? 2009, VT #9; 2003, Miami. Virginia, never in 116 years. GTech 2014 #8; Duke 1960 #10; UNC #6 1997. That’s a little worse than mediocre.
The Coastal is terrible and has always been terrible, yet we want to celebrate Narduzzi’s better conference record than OOC. Imagine if we had an above average AD that could have capitalized on a weak coastal conference schedule AND a weaker OOC.
Final thought for the weekend – Pitts academic performance rate was 11th out of 130 teams. Pitt scored a 988. The 130th ranked team scored a 930. It’s not really an important stat if you really look at it closely. Each student-athlete receiving athletically related financial aid earns one point for staying in school and one point for being academically eligible. What a low bar! Shameful. Not a statement about Pitt, but rather college football AD’s that celebrate this and manipulate the system by shifting the students into easy classes or non-classes in some instances.

My concern Huff is exactly at the business level since there is no national and enforceable standard. It’s the wild west out there.
A school like penny state is hurt the most financially with these guidelines and health protocols. Therefore they have every incentive to cheat, bend the rules or not follow them at all.
Those schools that don’t take the virus seriously and don’t execute the protocols put everyone at risk.

Being banned from the tourney is pretty big and I doubt OSU collects a cut of the tourney money. Its top incoming recruit is bailing and Tar Heel fans think it will push RJ Davis out and take Cunningham.
Seems like Kentucky was his second choice and Calipari has a scholarship to use.

I did this in literally 30 seconds. Looking at duel and athlete and noted roughly 5 percent of the top 50 was labeled as such. I’m not striving for perfection since that bar is too high. And duel threat athlete means athlete anyway in my book. Can play either side of the ball if you’re an athlete but most likely offense. The point being is that the majority of the elites are listed on offense. You just validated research I did in minutes. Are you still burning about what I said about the fan committee. Get over it.

Well you shouldn’t comment unless you put in the work. It took me 20 minutes plus or minus 2 minutes to do all 250.
It may mean “Athlete” to you but to Rivals it means something else.

You will be proud of yourself that after 3 years of Narduzzi making $3.5M, he may finally make that amount (or at least what the media reports) this year.

And it’s been publicly noted that Narduzzi makes top 40 pay. I’ve also posted links to support it based on quick google searches. I never claimed to be a journalist. Only a passionate pitt fan that takes the time to explain and support my opinions. And frankly I don’t have to even do that. And surely won’t just to please you.
Narduzzis comp is based on what pitt discloses ((which often isn’t timely or transparent) and doesn’t account for things he does on the side. Narduzzi is the most highly paid pitt employee. Go ahead and fact check me on that.
To the BoT he is worth it despite mediocre on the field performance. I will give him credit for running a clean program but pitt doesn’t need mother Theresa as coach.
And as huff explained, these grades and accolades are bs. So let’s go ahead and pat ourselves on the back and feel good that pitt has ‘smart’ players yet couldn’t beat BC last year when it counted.

Just following in your footsteps in replying to any comment that disagrees with you.
1’st – I know all about the USA Today reports. In fact, I wrote an article that was published in the POV in November of 2018. I wrote it because you & UPitt were constantly harping on PN making $3.5M. I explained why he wasn’t giving links to the USA Today article, Pitt tax records & most importantly the methodology used by USA Today that is not comparable with Pitt’s Tax records. You ignored & still beat the $3.5M drum. I also said he would make $3.2M in the next fiscal year which while not exact was within a few $100K.
Since I can not post links either go to the November 2018 POV achieves or bing or google Pat Narduzzi Salary for the article.
2’nd – Pitt’s reporting are consistent with other state related & private schools like Duke, Wake, BC, Stanford, USC. Vandy, etc.
3’rd – The last time you posted a link was to a request I made for to backup your claim that Pitt had the 3’rd highest spend on athletics. The link you sent was the 5’th. Close but not 3’rd
4’th – what the heck does BOT & Huff’s comment on APR have to do with what I commented on. Smoke screen as usual.
5’th – If you don’t know for a fact use “I believe, I think, In my opinion or IMO”. I don’t argue with opinion. For example, a week or so ago, you commented the AD Heather Lyke makes $400K. You beat me up over a $300 k difference in comp. you really trust the figure by pitt when they lie about attendance. Pitt is one of the least transparent universities out there. They hide behind their quasi state and private definition.
Pitts spend in the ACC is top third. I had to use a Syracuse grad for that info. Why is that?
You quibble about 3rd versus fifth when the difference between third and tenth is only $3 million dollars. I’ve pointed that out but you don’t read my comments nor understand.
You can fact check me all you like. Heather is one of the lowest paid ads. She makes no more than $450k. Avg in the ACC is close to one million.

You have a hard time in comprehension. Three years ago was June of 2017. That was just after the release of Pitt’s tax return in May 2017 for FY 7/15 – 6/16 where PN “made” $1.828M. That’s is when you started the drumbeat of $3.5M. Since then, the tax returns have shown $3.0M (my article) & $3.2M. You have continued the drumbeat. You should be congratulated on maybe finally being correct. The Tax returns for the latest tax return is probably gong to be released in November.
You originally said Pitt was top 3. not top 3’rd. As I said I asked for a link & when you provided it said Pitt was not 3’rd but 5’th. Once again you should be congratulated for changing your tune & empathizing top 3’rd but it took a nudge.

Please be sure to add in supplemental income and football camp cash, appearance fees and any apparel deal that they get as well. Personal use of a private jet, think net jets, is most likely not reported, but in the net too. Income is income from whatever source derived so said my old professor in tax law. Family vacations sponsored by apparel firms, cmon folks get on board. Quibbling about salary, whether it’s a hundred or three hundred thousand off, is a rounding error for these dudes and not a material miss. Materiality is critically important to understand however. A 5.2 player rating should not be confused with a 5.8 rating. That is a material difference.
40 years of saying next year will be Pitt’s year is comical. Hope isn’t a plan for success. Look, I will celebrate a 10 year win season with you all some day, but that won’t wash away 40 years of 6.5 wins. It will never be worth the wait in my mind. Pitt has had the opportunity to excel and failed. It was purposeful. Excuse it all away if you would like. Its too cold. Too much competition from pro teams, the media doesn’t treat us fairly. Tough banana boats. Working harder beats those weak mentality obstacles and excuses cupcakes.
We have GT and Miami on the schedule every year. We need GA ST and FIU/FAU/or USF on there as well. Eazy Peazy 4 games in the markets where the recruits are, but more importantly, in markets where the high school graduate population will be increasing. At a minimum, four opportunities to grow the program and increase the brand, yet we push for iowa, tennessee and jerry west virgina. Free advice to Pitt again.

I think and not speaking for you RKB is that expectations should be relative? You can’t milk a dog and you can’t make a race horse out of a jackass…. PITT fans need to be realistic, It makes winning games all that much more exciting. Like beating Clemson, the eventual natural champions. My expectations aren’t lower than anyone else’ just real. When PITT kicks ND’s ass this year it will feel a whole lot better for PITT fans than for ND fans if they beat PITT. It’s the beauty and the best.
