  4. All this testing stuff we hear daily bothers me as football may use it for players before every game. Is testing at the half and quarters needed? What is the best testing accuracy we have? As an engineer anything less then 99% is scary. Is 15% accuracy acceptable?

    1. There is only 85 percent accuracy with existing tests. 15 percent give out false positives and negatives.

      And there still isn’t a reliable, accurate and quick turnaround antigen test

      And we still don’t know if you have immunity and for how long. Would you need a booster. What happens if the virus mutates.

      Only time will tell as we collect and analyze the data

      The good thing is that young and healthy adults have a very low mortality rate. Athletes are in this category unless you are a fat slob on our line. Being obese does increase your risk.

      Colleges need testing, surveillance, plans to isolate infected individuals, etc etc. remember that many infected individuals show no signs at all and this virus is highly contagious making an outbreak a good probability.

      We are nowhere near where we need to be regarding testing. It’s just still not safe.

      But I know pitt has multiple plans. None is perfect. But classes to some extent will resume in Fall. It will just be a new normal.

      My money is on only frosh and seniors allowed on campus. Class sizes being restricted. Temp checks and thermal imaging. Constant sanitation. Social distancing rules. And yes periodic yet random testing of student and staff populations.

      1. Daughter-in-law had Covid and just tested for antibodies. Positive result in 3 hours so perhaps the testing is improving.

        1. From what I know, the best testing is done at medical centers associated with universities. There is really no commercially produced test you can trust right now.

        2. Employee went to ER this morning with signs of Coronavirus – within two hours his wife called me to tell me he was COVID-19 free.

          Turned out to be a collapsed lung, so he must stay in hospital until Friday. Ouch and a 14 day quarantine to follow his hospital release.

          There is a lot of “loose” information about the testing. My two employee experiences with testing turned really quickly and were three weeks apart.

          And yes, offices were thoroughly scrubbed.

          Interesting possibility with ND – if 9 games is the limit, the Irish won’t be able to play ACC teams – hmmm…

        1. Yes. I make it a point to keep up to date and research something that can kill me or more likely I spread the virus to someone who will die. I’m well versed on the matter but no expert but I do listen to the doctors and epidemiologists and scientists. The truth is out there. I don’t get my facts from any politician.

  5. NFL writer Peter King brought this up. If 3 or 4 players on a team test positive the day before … even if these players are held out, will the game be played? How will players from the other team react? Will they want to play?

      How colleges handle it will be interesting. How players and coaches handle it. There will be some forfeited games I guarantee you. There will be some schools that will need to shut things down.

      It will be a mess this Fall.

      We have not met the test as a Nation and prevailed. But I’m confident that schools like Pitt will make the right decisions. Other schools not so much. Those schools will end up infecting pitt athletes. The schools that value money and pride over lives.

  7. Pitts apathetic fan base and culture that values the mission statement above all else will be its saving grace. It will help save lives at Pitt and other schools. On something like this, I trust Pitt given its medical background. Decisions will be based on the data, facts and science. Not so much at schools like bama and penn state.

  8. You guys would sing a different tune if you were below 50 and had people to take care of. Be smart and be proactive and everything will be fine. The fear amongst the readers is pretty shocking to me. Move on and live your lives. Again, where I live things are fine. Watch the amount of people leave PA amongst a shutdown till June 1st. That is a joke and I prefer to make a living and not suckle the governments teet.

    1. Dude I have moved on and am no hermit. But I have no right to spread a virus that kills. Until I get tested I’m being cautious and not cavalier. But to each his own. Pitt will take the cautious approach. Other schools not so much. Your thinking gets people killed.

You bitch about how the rankings drop but trust them. They are no better or worse. I was tested. Didn’t have it so I move on and work and it appears 99% of Texans have except you. Same Pitt Medical with the Cyanide killer. But we don’t discuss that.

          2. Over 68% of the folks who have died in Pennsylvania were in Nursing Homes. This from yesterday’s Pittsburgh Tribune. And this echoes death rates in most states, especially the Northeast.

            “To date, (PA.)state figures show that nursing homes residents have accounted for 2,529 of the state’s 3,707 reported covid-19 deaths. That is a pattern that has been echoed in most states across the country, however. ”

            The chance of dying to a healthy under 70 person is tiny.

  9. IMO there will be no problem in getting a very accurate test administered prior to football this year. There are quite a few very accurate tests that have been given he go ahead by the FDA. Between now and the end of August there should be plenty of time for the validation of those given the go ahead.

    1. I trust the pitt medical center tests and not some mass produced commercial test with only 85 percent accuracy. I truly wonder where bama will be getting their tests and how they will be administered if at all.

  10. Back to FB, a major decision is forthcoming on a big RB that Pitt is high on. Malik Newton 5’11” 215 lbs out of Virginia. A 56.7 3 star back with numerous big name offers. It would be nice if Pitt could get a good size back to move the pile on those 3rd and 1 calls in the future.

  11. More FB, from pantherlair George Rooks a 4 star 5.9 DE out of NJ has told Chris Peak he intends to drive to Pittsburgh this weekend to look over the campus. You can imagine they size of his offer sheet just from his high 4 star rating. And I don’t see Elon anywhere on that offer sheet.

  14. Before condemning the SEC (if you have facts, then OK), go back and read the May 6 TribLive article entitled, “More than half the ACC football schools aim to reopen in fall”.

    More than half, being 8 of 14 schools. Sounds like there are plenty of Billy Narduzzis in the ACC! And who knows? They may be right!

    I’m more interested in who starts “summer” camp; when; and with what special conditions.

  19. iek I too am an old man down the road – one of my favorite singer/guitarist/songwriters. The student only attendees idea still cracks me up will they 1) walk from Oakland in single file 6 feet apart 2) travel with only 10 students per bus (add another 100 buses) – need hand sanitizers on bus 3) at half way through 3rd quarter will the students medicated with Corona and lime stand 6 feet apart in lines to get on the 100 buses. We already practice social distancing at the games 30 K in 65 k stadium. Promotions are endless 1) Pitt N-95 face masks / 2) Pitt purell bottle day 3) ike Pitt sock and undies day 4) Billly Nardozzi silk Pitt robe/hazmat suit day 5) MM corona bobble head day complete with face mask and Ike with poor Eli 6) give MM a middle corona virus related middle name. Boy would the late Beano Cook have a field day – a chance to do his Don Hennon/Jonas Salk promotion as the two greatest shot makers in Pitt history.

  27. Pitt sent out a questionnaire looking for feedback on the zoom event with the coaches. I suggested they have separate chalk-talks, at least for the football and basketball coaches, with Q&A sessions.

    I think some fans would like to learn more about the behind-the-scenes intricacies of the games. I think they could get some young players – and future fans – to watch, as well as old geezers like me.

    (And it was great to see Richman’s questions pop-up during the event last night…👍)

  28. Saw this morning that Cal State (and I don’t mean “Harvard on the Mon” as my brother the alum calls it) has stated they will not re-open cmapuses this fall. The state system includes the Fresno State Bulldogs and the San Diego State Aztecs. Some are wondering if this will nudge more universities to take the same stance. Hard to imagine the SEC or ACC taking cues form California.

  30. Hi guys. I started following Pitt football around 1998 when I was in 7th grade. There was excitement in the PGH area that Walt Harris was finally turning things around. I have a new guilty pleasure during this quarantine since I am unable to follow my Buccos and White Sox. As soon as the wife and son go to bed, I go to Youtube and watch old Pitt football games.

    I have no idea who wins many of these games, but I have noticed a disturbing trend which I would like some feedback on…it seems as if the national announcing crews hated Pitt in the 80’s, even the mid to late 80’s when we were kind of like we are now… which is just ok, not exactly a national powerhouse. I am kind of shocked about this. What did we do to deserve to be cheered against? Does anyone remember this going on? A specific example that angered me was a game on TNT against Purdue in 1986. The announcing crew (one of which used to do Atlanta Braves games on TBS in the 90’s) makes no effort to hide their excitement that we were down 14 to 0 and both announcers have man crushes on freshman Purdue qb Jeff George.

    I understand today that we geographically don’t fit in the ACC. When we play the ACC Game of the Week on Root or are on the ACC network, our southern brethren will not be cheering for us. The southern officials may not be giving us the benefit of the doubt and at times, the Ol’ Nard Dawg can be a bit abrasive. As an eastern independent in the 80’s though, why the Pitt hate?

    1. Here are a couple theories, ajs…

      1) Four Super Bowls and a World Series in the late 70’s early 80’s broought a lot of pride to the area and as the Pgh area steel industry and related tanked, many people in Western PA people had to leave the area for brighter futures in the sunbelt, taking that pride with them. People who weren’t from PA had to listen to all this and grew (and still are) quite tired of hearing about the Terrible Towel, “We Are Family” and “City of Champions”. Pitt was another Pittsburgh sport team to those outside the area. Winning the National Championship in 1976 and having a top 5 team while the Steelers and Pirates were having great seasons put the Panthers in the same boat.

      Think of how sick most people are of the Patriots, Bruins and Red Sox….many root for anyone but the Pats. I think its was (and still is) the same with Pgh sports teams.

      We’ve been very blessed in my lifetime with exceptional sports teams and….haters gonna hate.

      2) There are only a small handful of exceptionally good announcers and color analysts in sports. Back at tha time, we didn’t have ESPN and many games were covered by local teams. Sports were covered by the major networks and for regional coverage, they had to hire local crews. (A number of them were hired for their looks and gift of gab and not necessarily their insights.) The ones with good insights have objectivity as a core competence. Not every can be a Jim Nantz, Dick Enberg, KeithJackson, etc.

      Don’t know if either holds water, but thats my two cents.

  33. Great comment JoeL. I remember turning to my buddy after the 79 super bowl win and asking him if he realizes how lucky we had been through the 70’s with all the sports team we were rooting for. “Oh My” and “Whao Nellie”

    Thanks Pete, you know me and my family stories, well Eli comes from a litter of 10, (9 males) The breeders ran a meticulous and super clean operation where you had to make an appointment the day of pickup. The pen was divided into two parts. One where they slept and ate and the other where they did the opposite of where they ate with wood chips scattered about. Eli was pretty much house broke at 8 weeks when we picked him up. BUT. On the back wall was a 42″ flat screen TV that ran dog clips all day. Point is…. Eli likes to watch TV. Thanks again Pete.

  34. I thought I just read a post by WBB that has disappeared, speculation about what might happen this fall.

    In any case what might happen this fall depends on what might happen this summer as we relax social distancing and stay at home requirements. Those that are saying that the overall death rate is low, and point out that most that have died are elderly with pre-conditions are correct. What we don’t know is how many will die this summer as we try to get back to normal and whether it will be safe to let kids go back to school, let alone to have major events with large groups of people. Will the hot summer sun slow down the spread? We all hope so.

    But as of right now going to the grocery store is still a very somber and sobering event. It is hard to imagine how kids are going back to school in August.

  36. NCAA Pres Emerick said the NCAA will not mandate uniformity in college sports this coming season.

    As of now, it doesn’t appear the California PAC12 school will open in the fall, whereas pro sports are allowed to restart this Sunday in Arizona. Many conferences cover a wide geographic area which includes Northern and Southern schools as well as urban and rural schools … and certainly the ACC falls into this category

    It’s possible that some conferences will have some teams playing while others have to sit due to legal mandates and/or being in hot areas. Heck, even in our state of PA, there is a wide range of C19 cases being reported between the far eastern counties and the rest of the state. Maybe schools like Temple, Rutgers and UConn may have sit out this FB season. Maybe BC and Cuse?

    Be prepared to expect anything this fall ,,,, from full schedules to no schedules, and everything in between

  37. I agree that the SEC is the most likely to play. So far the south has not been hit as hard as the north. Probably sunlight has something to do with it. However, as was pretty obvious in Louisiana, Mardi Gras did some damage, so they are not immune by any means. We are learning how this thing flares up with examples in South Korea and Germany, when requirements are relaxed.

    A lot will also depend on how testing and treatments have evolved over the next two months.

  38. Will SEC schools open? Without school open will crowds show up or be allowed at games? If crowds show up we would see the virus results by late October. What then? I think flu starts in late October. How would the players react?

    I’m working a chainsaw in the yard listening to Skynyrd…I must be the other end of the spectrum.
