It was a busy day for Pitt recruiting today.

Pitt landed three 2021 verbals and a grad trafser.

Three of these commits were offensive linemen.

In other news, a local Tight End that Pitt was recruiting signed with Maryland.  sigh

Editor’s note:  CJ Dipre is from Jermyn, PA , which is just north of Scranton, so “local” is a relative term here.  

First, the transfer.  Keldrick Wilson

Per PSN:  6-foot-5, 299-pound tackle from Mt. Ulla, North Carolina, chose Pitt over fellow finalists Indiana, USC and West Virginia. He will have one season of eligibility remaining with the Panthers.

Wilson comes to Pitt via HBCU Hampton University, in Hampton Virginia.  Not much can be found on Wilson.  I thought there might be a rivals profile from 2015, but no luck.  Pitt did beat out USC, Indiana and WVU for Wilson’s services so that is something.   Welcome to Pitt K.J.  We are glad to have you.

Next lets get on to the 2021 commits.  We’ll keep with the offensive line theme to start.  Pitt received commits from two OL’s out of Detroit, and that is noteworthy for several reasons.  First, because Pitt has been signing an average of two OL’s per season for the last several years, so two in one day is well, noteworthy.  Second, because one of them is a coveted 5.7.  Pitt apparently doesn’t sign enough of these.  Third because these guys are from Detroit and Pitt has not had a ton of luck in Michigan in recent years, even though it’s within driving distance and Narduzzi supposedly has ties there.   These two commits could potentially signal a change.

I see road grader type with long legs, decent athleticism for his size.  Heck he’s already better at sealing off the end the Carter Warren (I’m kidding here).  He’s pancaking a lot of 200 lb or less dudes and not doing a ton of pass blocking, but it appears that the raw material is there.

Finally we got a linebacker out of Georgia.

Preston Lavant will be Pitt’s fourth Georgia recruit in the last two years.  (Last year’s commits were DB Rashad Battle, DB Hunter Sellers, and WR Jaylon Bardon).  Lavant is the kind of linebacker recruit the Narduzzi regime seems to favor:  Slightly undersized and athletic, with some room to grow.  For those of you who are not familiar with deep south Geography.  Cordele, GA is waaaay down there, about two hours south of Atlanta.  Just south of Vienna (pronounced VI-enna) and just northeast of Albany (pronounced all-BAN-E).  All kidding aside there are a lot of good undiscovered athletes in south Georgia and Lavant could turn out to be quite a find.  His HS Alma matter, Crisp County is AAA – the fourth biggest classification (HS with 1100 in this case).  Crisp County dominated their division in 2019, winning 11 games.

  1. Mr. Enos is listed as 6-5 and 314#. The other three OLine commits all weigh in the 270s.

    I like that. Makes sense to me to work them up to 290 – 300 pounds. If they get or stay well over 300 pounds, seems like a problem as far as agility and “quickness,” especially for the OTs…

  3. Amen Brother Majors. It is much easier to work your weight up smartly and healthily, under a team nuitritionist. Except for the Fridge no HS lineman should go over 260-270. The Ricky Jackson story of how he started as frosh but getting “up” to weight required by Jackie by putting weights in pockets at weigh in worked just as well and is legendary as well for the HOF’r.

  6. Very promising class at this point. Still need to grab a TE. Could still use a top RB. But adding Michigan to the recruiting area is a big deal and makes good sense given its closeness. If this senior transfer can play, Pitt could be smelling that 10 win season.

  8. Your comment about what Kansas thinks of Missouri reminded me of WDVE in the late 80’s- specifically the morning show with Paulsen and Krenn. When the Pirates started to get good and challenge the Mets, they started to refer to them as , “Muck the Fets!” They might have even done a little song about it. Could be on one of those comedy CD’s they used to sell on their website- dunno?

  11. Jamers39, Paulsen and Krenn ruled the Pgh area morning airways in late 80s. I remember ‘Muck the Fets’ Do you remember Joe DiNardo singing “Partly Cloudy and Mild” to the tune of “Born to be Wild;?

    After Paulsen left town, a disguised Jimmy Krenn would make probably the most historic call to Pgh sports radio ever to Stan Savran and Guy Junko which began with “Stan and Guy, Luv the Show” It ended with asking if they thought that if Mario Lemieux was on a breakaway and Roberto Clemente was in goal, would he score?

    They actually end up changing the title of their radio show to “Stan and Guy, Luv the Show” because it seems that every other caller to their show would open up with that

    1. Absolutely! We could spend a whole day discussing their greatest hits! The best ones were when they would crack each other up! Each year they would put out a CD and donate most of the proceeds to charity. Used to be able to buy them on the website, but i haven’t been on there since they both left. Also, they used to voice characters (along with Cris Winter) for a show called, “Action League Now!” It used to air on Nickelodeon. My younger brother used to watch it. I guess one of the creators was from da ‘burgh.

  14. An interesting, to me, tidbit from a PG article about QB recruit Nate Yarnell from Lake Travis HS.

    “Lake Travis’ new offensive coordinator is Tommy Mangino, the son of former Kansas head coach Mark Mangino. The elder Mangino…was a graduate assistant at Youngstown State in 1985 and 1986. The Penguins’ head coach at the time? Bill Narduzzi, Pat’s father.

    The relationship between the younger Mangino and Narduzzi…helped facilitate Pitt’s interest in Yarnell and vice versa. Whipple took it from there, selling Yarnell on an offense predicated on the pass.”

    The article indicates that Yarnell also had a phone conversation with Kenny Pickett before deciding to commit…

    1. If you’re in sales you’ll quickly learn that relationship matter. Recruiting is sales. This is a great example of that.

      I’ll also add that while season 1 of the Whippit offense was at times frustrating, it definitely laid the groundwork for QB recruiting success…which has not exactly been a Pitt strength in recent years

  15. Annie, I am not surprised at all. I remember watching the ESPN documentary about a month ago about the FBI stings of Louisville and Arizona. Duke alum Jay Bilas was interviewed and he casually says … hey, college basketball players have been getting paid for years (probably paraphrased).

    BTW, all of a sudden Tennessee football is now the place to go …. they are now ranked #2 in FB recruiting. Makes you wonder! Yes, they have an OCS that holds > 90k, but they have had that for years

      1. John – Tennessee recruiting has been Rivals top 20 for the last 8 years. Worst class was ranked #21 in 2013 ( Butch Jones 1’st year). Was # 20 in 2018 Greg PruITT’s first year. Every other year was 15 or under.

        1. Talk about underachievering. Can you imagine the rage if pat recruited five top 25 classes in a row and averaged 6-7 wins per season?

          From what I hear the situation is pretty toxic at UT with Fuller as the AD. Just some stuff heard on the radio a while back, but the results seem to bear it out

            2. Ike – more about HC hires. Kiffin, Dooley, Butch Jones. Latest coach was hired with input from Sabin. PruITT on Sabins staff after a tumultuous 3 months search.

              1. Jones had em on track with two 9-4 seasons in ‘15 and ‘16. But most have gotten canned mid season in ‘17 after starting 4-6. Also won three bowls. Where’d he land again?

                Pruitt went 5-7 in year 1. 8-5 last year. Pulled a Chryst in his first game and got upset by GA state. (Which is the SEC version of losing to Youngstown ). Won the Gator over … ugh Indiana

                Derek Dooley was an unmitigated disasters. 7, 6 and 5 wins before they rode him out on the rail after going 4-7 in 2012. (Fun fact Jim Chaney took over as HC and went 1-0 that year).

                Fuller has a great run including natty in 1998 but got canned after going 5-7 in 2008. Was his second 5 win season in four years.

                Seems like winning four out of your first ten will get you fired down in Rickytop no matter how good or bad you’ve been leading up to that. A national championship apparently gets you one mulligan.

  16. Like the new commits because they are for an area of need and they are from good recruiting areas.

    Really like the LB film. Of course it is just highlights, but he shows the ability to fight through blockers and he has decent height. Plus he played LB in high school, not a slow safety moving up to LB.

  17. I’ll be seriously bummed if this football season does not happen with Pitt finally having a very good D combined with an offense that should be above average. I want to see all the players this staff developed get their chance to shine and get their names called on draft day. Twyman, Jones, Hamlin, Ford, Weaver, etc.

    I will root them on in a hazmat suit, just play the damn games! LOL

  18. Tennessee is like Alabama, football is their religion. Although they do have music and the Titans. Like Kansas Basketball, what else is there in those states. Same as Oklahoma Football, they are the only game in town.

    I remember when Johnny went to Tennessee, the only thing that mattered was whether he beat Bama.

    Tennessee been an also ran in The SEC since Manning and Tee Martin. But football players still treated like Gods on campus.

    1. Pitt’s 2021 FB class is currently ranked 21st; I expect it to finish in low 30s. Pitt BB is currently 20th, it shouldn’t go much lower.

  20. there is no reason the 2020 Pitt FB team shouldn’t field a really good defense; they even have depth in many positions to absorb injuries. When a brand new offense is installed, I always expect the 2nd year to be much better than the first. Both the players and the coaches have to adapt. Hope we get to see if this pans out

In rankings recently released by the National Science Foundation, Pitt ranked fifth among all American universities in total federal science and engineering research and development support.

  24. Took a look at a bit of Brandon Honorable’s highlight video. IMHO, this is exactly the model of OT recruit we should be looking for. Good height/reach + 270ish pounds + Good lateral movement.

    I’m predicting Mr. Honorable as a three-year starter. 👍

  25. A related note to campuses opening. I read where students (not Pitt students) are suing for their tuition back since they were forced to do virtual classes.
    This makes total sense. Tuition is based on using and enjoying a campus not taking a class from mom’s basement. If anything, they should get a small refund.

  26. In most contracts, there is a paragraph called “Force Majeure”, which basically covers all acts of God that prevent performance (floods, hurricanes, wars, etc.). Pandemics are surely included as acts of God that would let businesses out of some contract performance without violating the contract. If there is any fine print that says students are entitled to use of the college facilities while enrolled, this would probably be covered under Force Majeure. So good luck getting any tuition back.

  29. I think there will be a lot more on-line learning this fall. We are close to 3 months away.

    Schools that go back have to be ready to deal with outbreaks, which means lots of testing.

    If football does get started with August practices, how many team outbreaks will it take to shut it down?

    Lots of work to be done.

    The only reason it is even being considered is the amount of money at stake.

  30. Look at how soccer leagues are doing it. They won’t be playing in front of fans. Too difficult to police social distancing in these large stadiums. The league derives the bulk of revenues from TV contracts. So really only the teams with the very largest stadiums will be at a disadvantage come revenues from gate receipts.

    The players are tested regularly. Temperature checks are routine. Everything is under constant sanitation.

    I can see college football being the same way. But leads to some interesting questions.

    Will the rest of the study body be tested regularly and have temp checks before entering classrooms? What is the max capacity per classroom for proper distancing? Will masks be required? How do you handle an outbreak on campus or in the locker room?

    These tests have false negatives.

    Much still to be hammered out but I can see football on tv this fall in empty stadiums or venues filled to just 25 percent capacity. I’m hoping all fans will have the rapid test prior to entry.

    And I do hear that Pitt will most likely be discounting tuition for any student doing online learning. And might just allow frosh and seniors to be on campus.

  31. Only two of the 12 recruits so far are rated 5.7 or above. Five is really where pitt needs to be at this point.

    Pitts number 21 ranking is driven by the sheer number of recruits right now. If you normalize for this, Pitts ranking is more like in the high 30’s.

    I do like recruiting positions of need. Just don’t see the quality in this class yet. Pitt will need some high end guys for the skilled positions.

    Pitt basketball is more like a top 10-15 class. Not sure why two of their best recruits dropped hugely in rating once they committed to Pitt. I call bs on that.

Plus allowing certain student athletes on campus just doesn’t make any sense to me. Then again, neither did tearing down PITT Stadium and PITT did that. << Yes it needed a huge makeover but that parcel of land was way to valuable to turn into a basketball arena.

  36. We are very fortunate that this pandemic happened in the age of technology and not 30 years ago.
    Many companies are finding that they are even more productive with enployees working from home. I know right? Education can be done on line. You can video chat with family members. Amazon will sell you just about anything you need. Science is further along because of technology and should be able to address the need for treatments and vaccines quicker. So a big part of the economy is and should be OK, until the pandemic is over.

    Unfortunately, the parts of the economy like the hospitality, live entertainment (sports) and vacation/travel industries, along with transportation related industries are going to take a lot longer to recover.

    Just like restaurants have to settle for take-out business, I think Tex is on to something with made for TV sports, but first you have to keep the players and other employees safe, but it may be a necessary transition.

    Necessity is the mother of invention, there will be long term changes made that haven’t even been thought of yet.

  37. The country will be fully open come August whether Covid 19 is under control or not. Just as long as the hospitals can handle the Covid patients with sufficient equipment and protective supplies in hand. Will the death rates rise? Absolutely The campuses will be openl and football will probably be played in most venue’s absent fans. There will be sufficient rapid tests available to test all players, coaches and officials prior to any game being played. Fans allowed to attend may have to go through the same rapid tests as all participants. Thus the prices paid by those wishing to attend may be 5 times the normal ticket price..—-That’s my prediction.

  39. Useless trivia: Kansas is more of a wheat than a corn state. I know this because my company was headquartered in Topeka for a long time and the locals think the distinction is an important one, for some reason. Just a helpful pointer when you’re making plain states jokes in the future.

  45. this should not be controversial (I think) Studies show that 100% of ICU patients with Covid 19 under age 75 had low Vitamin D levels. So ….. sun, eggs, many fishes, many meats and poultries, cheeses, milk and maybe multi-vitamins …. not a sacrifice here.

    1. Hang out a weekend in Texas and you’ll get a years supply of vitamin D from the hot sun. My body was literally in shock when I first moved down from cloudy and cold buffalo. After over 60 straight sunny days, I craved a cloudy day. More so than any marijuana craving. Cases in dallas are still high despite the sun however.

        1. whether anyone cares, there are some recommending NAC 600mg, C 2g, D3 5000IU, Turmeric, Zinc 25mg so I’ve added these to a multi, good Omega 3, CoQ10, and previously took C 1g

          along with diet of #2 kale and #3 spinach i typically eat weekly, spinach mostly cooked, kale mostly raw

          maybe coincidence but soon after the first 4 on the list above of which i recently added, hip pain while running has virtually disappeared going on about 2 weeks now, i’m back to 4-5 miles daily

            2. tvax — This from one who has had a hip replacement— I trust your doctor has x-rayed your hips periodically for arthritis, just to be safe. Last thing you want is to have all the supplements mask something serious.

              BTW, 3 to 4 miles a day, that’s impressive; I had to give up playing squash when I was around your age, too much pounding on the joints. Nothing but the ellipticals these days.

Just another pill they force down my throat. pfft, it’s why I have given up on going to all doctors. 27 pills a day ain’t curing anyone, quite the opposite in fact. Now if I can get my hands on some Mexican Quaalude’s?? << Certainly a cure all…

  47. Unfortunately Tumeric didn’t work for me, but I am taking D right now, it can’t hurt. Could use some old fashion sunshine though. No not orange kind we had in the good ole days. That would probably finish me off.

    Zinc may help with Covid and it is good for the prostate so you got that going for you.

    1. gourmet cook? ok, you go to your nearest Shop & Save and get yourself a pound of Isaley’s chipped chopped ham, bottle of Coco-cola, a bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce and a dozen of hard rolls. Simmer the ham in the sauce with the of coke, (the drinking kind) bbq sauce and some sweet pickle relish. Slice the rolls and chuck in the ham between the rolls and walla, you got yourself a classic Pittsburgh samich. Serve with potato chips and a bottle of Iron City. 🙂

  49. I’ve had a Vitamin D deficiency for years and take D5000 daily but it wasn’t until 6 months ago that I found out you have to match the D level with Magnesium level or you’ll just pee out the Vitamin D.
    I started taking EuroMag with my D supp and it’s been life changing. I have so much energy and so many less aches and pains, I have to stop it a day a week just to calm a bit. I highly recommend to all. H2p by the way ….nice recruiting by Duzz and team.

  50. seriously speaking VoR, I’m famous for my own swiss steak recipe, when I roll that out there is no need to ring the dinner bell. It’s one of the ways I get my oldest son to come visit with three of our grand-kids.

      1. Here you go guys and I call this swiss steak as it’s fairly close to how your Mom may have cooked it. First rule of thumb, as most of you know, cooking is a little like painting. You need good utensils like a horse hair paint brush when painting. The only difference here is you don’t necessarily need the best meat. I use bottom round steaks cut thick. Whats cool about this trick is you normally can’t find it in your meat dept so you ask to have it to be cut fresh to about 3/4 to an inch thick.

        Another secret is a meat pinner. Just google meat pinner and it will pop up. So I pin the steaks both sides a few times. Then coat with seasoned flour and pound the heck out of the meat with a spiked mallet. Yes the flour goes everywhere. Brown the steaks both sides until a little crusty. Place in a good size casserole dish preferably with a lid.

        In a bowl I combine beef STOCK, not broth but it will do and dei fratelli tomato sauce or your favorite sauce. << imo dei fratelli is the best. About 3/4 sauce to stock. I season the heck out of this dish in each step. I don’t shy away from using Accent if I know who’s going to be eating the steak. Otherwise I refrain. Pour the sauce mixture over the steak and then cover tightly with heavy duty foil then cover with lid.

        Of course you can add sauted onions/green peppers and or mushrooms. I cook this in a preheated 325 degree oven for anywhere between 2 and a half hours to 3 hours. btw, I cook with my nose and never ever cook anything the same way. I rarely use a scripted recipe. Oh and I uncover it for the last hour to thicken up the sauce. Serve with mashed potatoes and frozen corn (heated up of course) and an Iron City beer. kidding a glass of red wine would go well I think?

        disclaimer… I’m pretty sure I forgot a few steps so improvise and do this your way. 🙂

  52. FWIW after my bladder cancer scare of 10 tears ago, I was advised by my Dr to take a daily multi-vitamin. At Costco, you can buy a large bottle of 500 tablets (approx. $17) which provides 10 mcg (50% of recommended daily requirement) of D3, 100 mg (24%) of magnesium and a 11 mg (100%) of zinc …. plus an s-load of other vitamins and minerals. Now, I get an annual blood test which measures my vital levels and if I’m overloaded on anything, it has never been detected. Just a thought.

    wouldn’t be surprised if ACC adopts a 9 game schedule …. league games plus ND and some others will have to pick up an OCC. All of this is speculation of course

  55. The conferences need the money. Pitt has probably lost at least $5 million so far in revenues and they haven’t furloughed anyone or asked anyone to take a cut in pay. It’s not sustainable.

    Wvcc just announced cuts and their big 12 check is similar to Pitts ACC check. Football pays the bills. They all need that tv money.

    Pitt is less dependent on gate receipts for revenues. Only about $10 million out of their roughly $70 million in revenues is derived from football ticket sales.

    Tex who consumes caffeine and alcohol but eats broccoli for the magnesium.

          1) Franklinstein will have to cut down on his helicopter trips.

          2) Hike ticket prices by 20%. The white-out masses have nothing better to do, judged by the fact that they show up in droves for Georgia State and even gets 75k for a scrimmage.

          3) Limit the brown-bag payouts to $45k

          1. They will be forced to cut all these fancy bells and whistles. Will probably be even more reliant on alumni donations. A budget shortfall will exist at every school this year. Some schools will be forced to eliminate programs. Construction projects and facility improvements will be delayed. But schools will adapt. It does level the playing field a bit for schools like Pitt though.

  56. ike the swiss steak dish sounds great with all those fancy ingredients, but do you ever add a little bourbon or rye whiskey to the mix? The chip chopped ham sandwich sounds pretty good too, but I didn’t know that Coke was added to it! Some good cooking will help us to get through these difficult times.
