Draft Roundup – Pitt’s got no Talent?

Most of you guys have already debated this to death yesterday but we need a new article and I figured I could use this as the opportunity to get in the last word.

First, one Pitt Panther was drafted this past weekend, in round seven no less.  It was senior Cornerback Dane Jackson, and he was drafted by the Buffalo Bills.  While we are all happy for Dane to get his shot in the NFL, I think we all would have liked to see him go a little earlier.  I blame coronavirus for this.  Pitt’s pro day is traditionally where all the non-combine athletes got their exposure, and those who went to the combine (which Jackson did) got even more.

Three other Pitt Panthers signed as free agents.  WR/KR Maurice Ffrench signed with the Chiefs.  TE Nakia-Griffin Stewart (somewhat surprisingly given his lack of effective receiving skills) signed with the Vikings, and Kylan Johnson signed with the Dolphins.  We wish them all the best as they attempt make it work in the NFL.

Taking a step back from this, the chief complaint of many, is that Pitt has not had enough players drafted in recent years, this year included.  This of course, points to a lack of talent and a deficiency in player development and recruiting.  Even Chris Dokish, who is usually a pretty positive dude (and I’m kind of being sarcastic here, because he’s usually a REALLY positive dude), said as much. 

First of all, a simple fact check:  He’s not wrong.  Pitt has had 11 players drafted from 2016-2020 (That’s five years.  Count it with me … 16-17-18-19-20).   BC has had 12 players drafted.  Meanwhile, Temple has sent 15 to the pros by way of the draft.  Clearly this does not reflect well on Pitt, and by extension, Pat Narduzzi.

What’s even more damning though is that 9 of Pitt’s 11 draftees were recruited by Paul Chryst.  (I’m giving Narduzzi credit for Jordan Whitehead and Nate Peterman.  Yes Peterman was a transfer but I can gaurantee you he would not have come to Pitt if Chryst was at the helm.)  Wait?  What???  The ‘Duzz has been in place for five years and he’s sent a grand total of TWO guys to the pros?  The howls of “Fire this coach he clearly sucks at recruiting,” are growing louder.

Well lets just slow down on the emotional knee-jerk reactions shall we.  We’ll start with some data.  And after we look at it, we may well conclude that these reactions are justified, but lets at least give the facts their day in court.  We are, after all, (mostly) college graduates here.

First… All the guys that were drafted out of Pitt since 2016.  I’ve added come commentary, and to keep it simple, I’ve also color-coded the players.  Green means they are contributing to an NFL team.  Red means they are out of the league OR not a contributor.

Two conclusions here

  1.  Duzz has still not put a lot of guys in the NFL.
  2. While the numbers are low,  the ‘Duzz does have a 100% success rate with his guys.  IE everyone that ‘Duzz has coached for 3+ years and that has been drafted is currently contributing to a team in the NFL.  On the other hand, we are talking about four guys here in three years, so yea, that’s kind of a low bar.  (Ollison, O’Neill, Whitehead, Maddox.  Connor was only a ‘Duzz guy for two years)

So a few more thoughts here:

  • In 2017 Temple went 10-4 in the American and had three guys drafted.  Pitt went 8-5 in the ACC and had five.  Of course four of them washed out…
  • Temple has one more win than Pitt in the last two seasons – in a weaker conference – but has had SEVEN guys drafted.  Pitt has had two.  What does that tell you?
  • Pitt’s 2018, 5-7 team had three guys drafted.  By the “guys drafted” measure it was Pitt’s second most talented team under Narduzzi.  Of course we didn’t have a quarterback (more on that in a later article…)
  • Steve Addazio has put more guys then Narduzzi in the NFL and yet never broke the 7 win plateau.

Last but not least, Pitt had four guys that could have declared in 2019 and probably would have been drafted (although all bets are off with COVID).  Narduzzi is retaining his most talented guys.  Do you really want to hold THAT against any college coach?  Really?

Now…what about the future?  After all, we are Pitt fans.  In fact, we should probably change our battle cry from “Lets go Pitt” to “Next year is our year!”.  But…if you look forward Pitt has 11 potential draftees in 2021…assuming there is a season.  No, not all of them will get drafted, but barring injury at least four of them will (and probably at least two more besides that.)  And guess what?  They were all recruited and developed by Narduzzi.  (Except Mack who transferred in – technically still recruited by him though).

Now the guy may have hairy arms.  And he may make some head scratching in-game decisions.  And he may come off as a bit of a blowhard in interviews.  But looking at the 2021 draft-potential, it’s pretty tough to say he isn’t developing talent…even though it’s taken a while.  Note the eight redshirts on that list.  That’s intentional, and I think a lot of people don’t get that.  #Meatballhasaplan

  1. Pretty obvious the dearth of talent at Pitt the last so many years. Struggle to beat last place MAC teams in bowl game, lose to another that had half their starters skip the Bowl. Just absolutely get trounced by some teams, where Pitt doesn’t even look like it should have even been on the same field. Can’t pass block or complete most passes longer than 5 yards. Never ending procedure penalties, from game 1 to game 13.

    We just lost to Boston College at Home, so we are no better than them. Good thing Temple was off the schedule the last 5 years or we’d be losing to the Owls as well.

    Pitt is what it is, a middling mess of a program, that has been floundering in mediocrity for not years, but decades.

    Who hired Jim Chaney?

    Addazio was at BC 7 years. I say that knowing that this is the year Narduzzi’s (year 6) we should see what kind of job PN is doing. PITT will have at least 8 players drafted next year depending on Covid and injuries.

    PITT didn’t have many players drafted? This was more to do with Paulie than Patty.

  9. Ike – pitt should never and I mean never be beaten by schools like temple and BC in regards to recruiting, development and results on the field. That dokish stat is embarrassing.

    And Pitt is top heavy on developing defense guys particularly on the line. The lack of talent and development on offense is a major problem.

    Again, pitt doesn’t need five guys drafted every year to be a successful program. But it does need more high end three stars and some more four stars each year. It does need better player development on offense. It does need that breakout ten win season and some consistent top 25 rankings.

      1. My hatred of lumpy is also well known. Potato paulie looked like a slob on the sidelines in those cheap sweats and his teams played like slobs. But he’s a good fit at whisky where having a dominant o-line is key.

  10. MM, it looks like (from memory) only 2-3 of those players on your list of potential 2021 draftees were 4 star recruits. I think this confirms what many of us believe- that 3 stars can be coached up to be decent players with time, but that it may be later in their careers before they contribute. With continuity and keeping players for five years, Pitt could remain competitive, but as you mention, maybe only 4-6 of these players could be good enough to be drafted.

    As I look at these numbers along with the total number of Narduzzi recruits over this period, I can’t see where the overall quality of recruiting has been good enough to build for the next level. Your analysis confirms to me that they must start getting more 4 stars, even if they leave the program early, in order to be consistently good. Pitt’s players drafted or signed by the NFL this year are likely only fringe players in the NFL at best, and I’m not sure the group available next year is that much better..

  11. No way to spin this as positive. One guy drafted in the late rounds isn’t going to get it done. I do think recruiting has picked up a bit in the last few years due to some good staff additions. There are clearly a couple of coaches on this team whose jobs should be on the line, both from lack of development and lack of recruiting.

  13. small note …. there are 2 other potential Pitt draft picks for next year …

    TE Lucas Krull – allegedly a real physical talent from a big program
    OG Bryce Hargraves — 3rd team ACC

    long shots but you never know

    People look at the matrices provided by Maestro above and see what they want to see. Some look at all the players from BC and ignore the W-L records. But then they at the Temple players and notice the W-L records.

    If you look at the past four Pitt HCs (that stayed for > 1 year), you will note that they seem to recruit/develop players that fit their programs: Offensive guru Walt Harris brought in people like A Bryant and L Fitz. He also was able to bring in the local top QBs like Rutherford, Palko and Getsy.

    Wanny bought in good DL and RBs. Chryst brought in OL, TE and RBs, and Nard brings in defense and a few good RBs. But none of them, it seems, have been able to recruit balanced classes of recruits on a consistent basis.

    Again, I think it is tough these days to consistently recruit good players if you (1) are not one of the elites, or (2) don’t have great talent pool in your backyard

    1. In the boredom of not having any new sports to watch I am catching up on Pitt football games from when I was in grade school and did not follow it. If you go on youtube, you can experience JM Part II against Miami in 94 and 96, Texas in 95, Notre Dame in 93, and Va Tech in 94/95. After watching those whoopins I will never complain about Wanny, Chryst, or Nard Dawg again. What went so wrong during that era?

      1. Pitt football had no shot. The BoT killed football in 1990 by raising admission standards and hiring Hackett, who implemented 6 a.m. study halls and kicked kids out of school at an alarming rate. It became worse after Hackett with the chancellor, O’Connor, and Oval Jaynes, the A.D., who let the program and Pitt Stadium rot.

        The root of the problem started in 1982 when the university got out of the big-time football business for good. The school has been run by absolute morons since then.

        I’m still bitter over the 1990s. Ten years of my life with awful football when Gottfried could have won 70-75 games that decade back teams played 11 games. Last decade wasn’t great either with all the coaching changes and Wannstedt- Narduzzi should have been the two coaches.

          1. During the 1989 Sun Bowl the announcers said Pitt’s chancellor, Posvar, did not like the direction of where college football was heading. It was about to get big. ABC and ESPN doubled down on football and pay per view was also on the horizon.

            Programs saw it coming and double downed as well. Ohio State was mediocre late under Earl Brice and John Cooper and was one of the schools. Since 1993 the Buckeyes have been incredible.

            Pitt wanted no part of this as I’m sure the BoT didn’t want to spend so it decided to let it rot.

        1. Burris and Pete Gonzalez traded TD passes in the first 1:51 of the game before Pittsburgh took a 10-7 lead on a 45-yard field goal by Chris Ferencik. Burris scampered 17 yards to give the Owls a 14-10 lead and Dwayne Schulters raced 67 yards to give Pittsburgh a 17-14 lead.

          Temple took a 21-17 lead in the second quarter when Deadrake Epps returned a blocked punt 12 yards for a score. Curtis Anderson took the ensuing kickoff 91 yards to give the Panthers a 24-21 lead.

  16. This article hits on my points yesterday so I will not repeat.

    This isn’t being negative but I don’t understand the infatuation with the Krulls, Flanagans, Graggs, Griffin Stewarts, etc. Look, if these kids were highly talented they would have declared for the draft instead of taking a roster spot at Pitt and getting paid instead of not. Pitt provides a last chance for kids, and eventually some will pan out (due to odds). For instance, Kylan Johnson. He played well for Pitt, but not well enough to have his name called. I hope the kid makes a roster spot for special teams play, but there are reasons they came to Pitt. Maybe they all got stuck behind great NFL talents, had injuries, coaching changes, who knows.

    If anything, this exposes the flaws in Pitt’s recruiting. When these grad kids come in, it’s great and everyone has a small love fest, but when you peel away the pedals grasshoppers, we aren’t finding a first, second third fourth or fifth rounder in there. We are finding serviceable athletes at best who are used to fill in recruiting evaluation busts. Who was our best grad transfer? Peterman? Was it Peterman, scheme or Gruden lovefest1 that led him to draftability?

    Krull will be a mismatch for smaller LB’s and a great safety valve if Pickett isn’t already running past him as Krull makes the last pivot on his route. I can see him averaging 9 yards per catch. I’d be more inclined to put him at OT, beef him up to 280-285 and let his TE footwork be used to his advantage.

    For this years draft, Dairy college had 5 this year and 6 each the prior two years. My thought of 4-6 a year might be too aspirational. Maybe 3-4 picks per year sounds better and is more realistic. I just know that one is not a good look and two would be the loneliest number and its the loneliest number since the number one. So I stick with a solid 3-4.

  17. Pitt has had some real bad coaches and athletic directors. Pitt has a leadership problem still to this day. It always has with the exception of Wes in the early 70’s who changed the culture and had one primary goal. But Bad decision after bad decision soon followed. Waiting to react. No strategic vision. Poorly executed tactical plans.

    Companies like this don’t stay in business very long but when you’re allowed to raid the general fund each year to subsidize these mistakes, we have Pitt as the poster child.

  19. Haven’t been posting or reading much lately, so I’m not sure if I missed it, but Aaron Donald tweeted he is now a proud Pitt grad. This, to me, is something that should be given much more attention than some shmo drafted and spending a cup of coffee in the league. A guy of his stature thinking it’s important to come back and finish school. Well, that’s amazing to me. Pitt pride for sure.

  21. I think Peterman got a chance because the top 2 qbs were injured back to back. Yeah it was awful. He wasn’t ready candidly. His processing plant needed an upgrade in technology (i.e. he needed to watch more film and get used to the pace of play). He was overwhelmed. Gruden is giving him a final chance since it was Gruden that told the world peterman was a late round 1 but definitely a second round pick.

    I just don’t get excited for any grad transfer. That’s just me. It doesn’t mean i won’t cheer for them to help us win or want them to fail. Not at all. My thought has always been, if they are that good to come in and start, they should go to the draft. Secondly, if our recruiting was as good as what everyone thinks it is, there should not be any openings for someone with equal or lesser talent. If the talent is equal, we should see the sequel (i.e. same dude that originally committed to Pitt and has put in the time with his teammates). Now, if a kid was hurt at his prior stop and he is rehabbed and needs to prove something and still has more talent then our dude, please come in.

    I don’t like the promise of playing time to grad transfers as it messes with team chemistry.

    One quick disagreement – Jordan Whitehead was recruited by, and committed to, Paul Chryst during the 2014 season. I guess you can say he’s technically a Narduzzi recruit if you want because he was in the 2015 recruiting class but he really wasn’t. The reality is that the staff and HC do a ton of hard work to get a guy like Whitehead – or any recruit actually – and deserve the credit when discussing the player. Narduzzi had nothing to do with getting him to Pitt over the likes of Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, etc…

    Dane Jackson committed to Chryst even earlier than Whitehead in June of 2014. That fact that Jackson was drafted is great given the only offers he got were from 2nd rate schools (except for Pitt of course).

    Give Narduzzi a feather in his PITT cap for doing great job molding Jackson into a strong player. As he did with another Chryst recruit in TE/OL Brian O’Neill by switching him to the position he thrived in.

    Hope we can see some football in Sept but not holding my breath – especially in college you have to give kids 4 weeks (at least ) to get ready to play.

    2. Thanks reed. I agree that Chryst and his staff did the lions share of the legwork on Whitehead. Was going off rivals which has Conklin and Hill as his recruiters. But upon closer inspection he committed on 10/4/14 and Narduzzi was announced 12/26. So there you go.

      With that being said… by that logic the lack of talent through 2019 at least should really fall on Chryst’s shoulders and not Pat’s. I know for sure that Paul signed O’Neill and Ollison, along with Maddox and Whitehead.

      The next 3-5 year will truly tell the story on how well Narduzzi recruits and develops, both on the field and in the draft. To be sure – he’s had a poor record getting juniors into the pros. But I don’t think that’s what he’s selling.

      1. Pitt doesn’t need to spend money to compete with elite schools. It needs to spend money for top 25 rankings. It has the 4th highest football spend in the ACC. Pitt is not cheap. But Pitt fans have been cheated of results comenserate with the spend. That’s on coach and heather for a p poor ooc schedule.

  41. Pitt doesn’t need to disclose any info because it is for all intents and purposes a private school. Only 8 percent of its budget is subsidized by the commonwealth. It’s board is 66 percent private and appointed by Pitt. It really needs to be 100 percent because the political appointments are hacks. Pitt will never disclose information. It takes me going to Syracuse and other ACC media to find the answers. You have to really dig or know someone inside the administration.

But what you also may notice is the shift from the south to the northeast … pretty much the antithesis of the FB recruiting. I have long maintained that Dixon’s downfall was not being able to maintain his NYC/NJ base when Pitt moved to the ACC … whether by design or otherwise. US northeast HS basketball is similar to US southeast football IMO

  66. I posted a message about 20 minutes ago that is ‘awaiting moderation’. It included links to Capel’s 3 commitment classes from Rivals.

    You would note that the 1st class included one from NC and two from VA. This last class included one from Cleveland, two from PA and two from the NJ/NYC area that was so good for Dixon prior to joining the ACC. Note that Champagnie is from the NYC area.

    Ironically, this is the antithesis of the FB recruiting where the US southeast HS football is akin to the US Northeast HS basketball. IMO as long as Capel is able to keep a pipeline here, things should be good

  71. Two Things. I adopted the III moniker from day one as I am confident in Capel to do the job. I will keep the moniker until we get to a Final Four in hoops. I am glad that our 2nd or 3rd choice basketball head coach has brought in this bright young man, Jeffress from Erie. His commitment video was pure class. No trash rap! Amazed me that he is only 16 and has such great composure. His interview with Saunders was stellar.

    I hope he stays humble and that Capel can keep the lecherous posse hanger on ers from him. The best part of the interview to me was that he clearly states and understands that he needs to continue to develop. Good stuff.

    I am wondering if Capel plays him in the allowable games as a true freshman and then redshirts him, or does he go the full year. He is 16, maybe still growing and will be going up against 21 year olds in some games. He and Hugley have a great chance to develop together. Hopefully we get one more big, but I would really like a top Point guard to get these two the ball.

    1. I’d say play them both. I just read the ESPN article on the firing of Danny Manning at WF. The article notes that he has had six good players in the last few years leave with eligibility remaining. They either went pro or transferred to other schools. Seems the days of good players redshirting then sticking around to play out their four years of eligibility are over. I would expect that to be especially true of top 100 or top 150 guys. Get their contributions while you can.

  73. Very, very impressive recruiting class for a program that is only 2 years removed from going winless in ACC play. I know that people got frustrated with the lack of progress during the season last year. But I will say it again: without a true point guard, a shooter or a decent big man/rebounder, we were coming to a shootout with a cap gun. Love what Coach Capel is doing.

    I will be moving my social distancing/quarantine to the south tomorrow. Heading the direction of Savannah Panther and Dr. Tom.

      1. Joel, it was a joke. The weather excuse is just not that big of a deal. The hypothesis was that our indoor sports will always outperform our outdoor sports. I am not sure that is true. It surely wasn’t true when football was king for so many years in the 70’s and 80’s. But I digress.

        You can win in cold weather towns if you commit to winning. Dairy, Mich, MSU, etc. You have to recruit better than other coaches. I think this last week and last few years have shown you can harvest talent from Virginia Beach and FLorida if you have good recruiters. Beatty and Partridge fit that mode.

            Once we all accept this and come to an agreement that PITT does not operate like the big boys we could possibly leave this debate in the rear-view mirror. This is what primarily bothers me when we all know the problem but some still complain about the results knowing why. Savor the wins and accept the losses, as hard as that it is for me to say that. I still think PITT overachieves with all things considered.

    1. We got 4 Bigs now (Hugley, Amadasun, Coulibaly & T. Brown). While it’s always good to have lots of Bigs, the most important position on the court is PG. Need that guy who doesn’t turn the ball over, can distribute to these new 4 star kids and can hit FT’s at the end of game and a few shots from the outside, so teams can’t sag down on Hugley and company. And you gotta have someone available to be able to take X out, when he’s he stinkin it up. Perhaps even replace him.

  85. This Jeffress kid is FIRST CLASS, all the way. And to think, he set scoring and rebounding records at his school, playing in years 14, 15, and 3/4 of 16!

    Can’t wait to see him on the court. Looks like The Pete will be rocking again, soon. I read earlier today, somewhere, that his dad asked JC how long he would be at Pitt. He wanted his son to have only 1 college coach. JC said, ” at least 7 more years”. I thought this to be an odd answer – unless his extended contract is presently for 7 more years. Does anyone know for sure?

    Although I have said a lot of positive things about this recruiting class, a quick look at the 2021 Rutgers Football class gives me some pause. In football recruiting the POV often says that the reason that Pitt gets ranked so low is because typically, the other teams have more recruits and we should look at the average stars.

    When we look at average scores of our basketball class, the numbers are still really good and would put us in the top 25, but because of the volume “buy”, our ranking is now 13. Five commits is a lot with perhaps our 6th on the way. The only other teams with 6 recruits are ranked 1st, 2nd and 3rd (Kentucky, Duke & NC).

    We shouldn’t let the numbers diminish the improvement, or temper the enthusiasm as the results give the Pitt fanbase some hope. So, I looked at Pitt’s first coach choice and found that of his first 6 signed recruits, Dan Hurley has brought in 4 four stars. Just giving perspective without being a negative nancy.

      In the same token, Mr Hurley, a NJ native who had previous HC stints at Wagner and URI, was supposed to leave his home area and arguably the best HS basketball in the world, and rebuild Pitt from Ground Zero. Do you know that Hurley and his family had to move a whole 60 miles west from URI to UConn.

      Hell …. why not Coach K? Hey, do you want to prove to that you are undeniably the greatest HC over John Wooden ….. turn Pitt from 0 ACC wins into 14 within 3 years!!

  96. The new rules about to go into place allowing athletes to be compensated should be a boon for city schools like Pittsburgh. If I were Heather I would be all over local businesses for endorsement deals for athletes. Could be a level setter for the state schools and their big athletic donors. The Big East could see a big resurgence in NYC. It’s going to be interesting in basketball. You have the G-League poaching kids right now but once kids can profit off their likeness, college once again becomes a viable choice. I can already imagine UPMC or PPG or Kraft or US Steel or a huge one in Dick’s paying kids for endorsements.

  98. No reason why Capel can’t land top 75 recruits each year. Pitt has many good selling points and is a vibrant and cosmopolitan city school. That actually means something to any kid growing up in a city. Basketball has an easier recruiting road to travel than football. I see no reason why Capel can’t surpass what Dixon accomplished…one elite 8 in 13 years.

    — Pitt plays is the most visible and regarded conference in CBB
    — it plays in an attractive, right-sized on-campus venue with a well-known student rooting section
    — it’s main recruiting base is northeast urban, not much different from Pittsburgh
    — it does not directly compete locally with an NBA team

    And believe it or not, WPa now appears to produce more high quality BB players than FB players. There are 2 Top 100 players from WPa this year. I believe the last time that happened in FB was in 2007 (Baldwin & Pryor)

  104. Tex, you may be right that a few paid players might put up the beer money for all, but what makes you so sure they would be so generous? And I can see where some players would begin to play for their stats, instead of just winning the FB or BB game, if they thought they could get more visibility and attract some sponsorships. This could create petty jealousies that turn into a cancer and destroy team unity. If they must get paid, using bag men might be the better way for them to get paid on the QT.

Ask Bobby Hurley why he left the same area, where he has the same contacts and a better reputation as a player why he went to Arizona St. It was about the money. He leveraged our AD and got a nice bounce from UConn as a result.

    Not at Wwb – I am thinking that all the people that comment on here and point out alleged reason after reason why Pitt can’t do this or that are the real negative Nancy’s. It just came to me and it plays out.   112. Well of course it wouldn’t make any sense because most coaches go to the big east now and flip their noses at the ACC. It was about the money and probably a lack of respect for the newly minted AD at Pitt. He schooled our AD and used her for leverage. Had UConn not upped the ante’, he sure would have come to Pitt. Give me a break. Had she not taken so long in the first place UConn wouldn’t have been in the picture. I am glad she fumbled and turned the coach over to Uconn.

    Coaches aren’t married to locations. Its not in their DNA. They follow the money if they are good, and go wherever the next job is, if they are not good (fired). For every 1 coach that has stayed in one spot their entire career, there are 100 that moved multiple times and he would have also if our AD pulled the trigger earlier. I used Bobby Hurley because he had the exact background EXCEPT he played four years at Duke. Coached at Wagner, Rhode Island, Buffalo, played at St. Bens in new jersey. He left NY for $$$

  113. Hurley was an ass at buffalo. My buffalo insiders have plenty of stories on that douche bag. I’m glad pitt didn’t get Hurley fries. He was heathers first choice but not mine. Guess pitt didn’t do their due diligence.
