  21. I had a chance to talk with Paris Ford, Damar Hamlin and Kenny Pickett…all are nice kids and super excited to play for Duzz and Pitt.
    From a local perspective things seem to be looking up…Duzz seems more relaxed and confident. Maybe he is learning on the job after all.
    Good to see Wolfe, Annie, Major, Richman and the ubiquitous Scooter at the event.

  23. Nice LOI event tonight. POV celebrities attending included Fran, Wolfe, Scooter, Annie and Richman! A star-studded event!

    The players who were there couldn’t have been nicer to talk to. Damar Hamlin has really impressive size – way bigger body than Paris Ford, but you can just tell these are two terrific athletes. Patrick Jones and Kenny Pickett, very cool.

    Fun fact: Paris has a sister named “London.” This is the kind of inside Pitt info we go to these events for! 😊

    1. Thanks John, funny thing is, Hamlin is in awe of Paris Ford and his athletic ability. So am I. The sky is the limit, let’s hope the PITT football team reaches the clouds at least.

    1. Seemed like your standard buffed-up S&C Coach. He brought up a staff – I think it was four other guys.

      Coach Stack made the point that the whole staff is from the Pittsburgh/Western PA region, though one was from Ohio and one from WV, if I heard correctly.

      I had no take on this new guy other than that Coach Narduzzi seems to like him…

  25. Had a chance to talk to Coach Bates. Told me how much he appreciated the Pitt family as he went thru his cancer treatment. Said he was pretty frail at times during the season and everyone was concerned about him getting hit along the sidelines in an out-of-bounds play. So he said Camp and Weaver became his protectors – and wouldn’t let anyone near him…

    Said he has to figure out how to best use the guys who decided to come back – the NFL level players he will have. Been thinking about it and going to talk to a friend who’s an NFL coordinator about it…

    Coach Bates is a fiery guy — easy to root for.

    pleased with his comments today and his loyalty to Pitt! Not many have had it over the years. We fired the most loyal of all….Wanny

  28. Was at the event tonight. I thought it was nicely done. It seems that the coaches are very positive about the upcoming season. It was a nice touch to have some players there. The Duzz seemed relaxed and confident. He may be growing into a real HC. All of the players spoke very highly of the coaching staff. What I gathered from the coaches is that they have a number of speed recruits. All of the S & C coaches grew up within 1 hour of Pittsburgh. I got the impression that they think this is the year. We shall see. Good night to drink the kool aide. Back to reality tomorrow.

  30. On the incoming players, it’s hard to say much. Everyone is looking for speed and the WRs, DBs, and LBs looked darn fast, but they probably were the fastest player on the field.

    Coach Whipple told me that the TE from Florida can really run — will be an upgrade in speed. Didn’t say anything about his hands and I was afraid to ask. 😊. (But I’m already a fan of Lucas Krull, because he’s a fellow lefty — saw him throw a TD pass for Florida on a trick play…).

    But the coaches emphasized speed. And pointed out a couple of the DL guys getting off the ball with quickness— Coach Partridge called them “quick twitch” guys.

    What impressed me, I guess, is that there didn’t appear to be any “reaches” in the class, and usually I feel like there’s a couple…

  32. One last comment, and it’s cautionary, but I know nothing about OLinemen, other than I know a good one when I see one.

    But we have two OT candidates in this class and it appears we’ve gone back to recruiting the largest human beings we can find. One is 6-7 and 370 pounds. The other is a petite 6-5 and 320 pounds.

    Coach said they move well. I just don’t see it, but I know nothing.

    (BTW, I asked Coach Whipple if he thought he was a couple of OTs from having a pretty good offensive unit. He said he expects OT Warren to improve with the experience he got and the others like Houy and Van Lynn to improve too. They were all young, he said.

    Coach Whip also said there were a lot of injuries on the offensive side last season that held them back. He said to expect the offense to take a leap forward this season…)

      Duzz couldn’t close on a grad transfer because the previous year’s guys did not make it to the next level while finishing careers at Pitt.

      Weak links will hold this team back – OL, coaching and RB.

      1. Oh is that the reason Duzz couldn’t close on the OLman Hamiliton. It couldn’t possible be that getting a Master degree from Duke combined with his BS from Stanford might have played a part in his decision to transfer there?

      3. Duzz is good for at least 2 Tomlin moments per game. Still not as bad as Wanny but this past year was bad. The undisciplined play will also hold the team back. And lets not forget WR and QB. If your receivers cant catch and your quarterback cant throw, you might as well put Pitt’s rugby players on the field.

  34. Back to basketball …. I’m very happy that the MBB got the monkey off their back with a road win at Chapel Hill (the 1st away win since 2017) …. because this team doesn’t have the talent and/or mature leadership to win on the road in the ACC.

    This should change in the near future but doubt we see another road win this season

  35. Back to CFB recruiting: headline in today’s P-G …. “Mike White: WPIAL-City League had its lowest number of major-college football recruits ever”

    and the article begins with …..

    It has been documented before by yours truly that the talent pool of major-college football talent in Western Pa. is nowhere near as deep as it was even 10 years ago. But the pool has never been as shallow as the class of 2020.
    The second signing day for high school football seniors was Wednesday and the recruiting facts for the district are eye opening to say the least:
    • Only six players from the WPIAL-City League signed with Power 5 conference schools. That is the lowest total ever. Yes, ever! The previous low was eight last year.
    • Only 15 players from the WPIAL-City League signed with FBS schools. That is the lowest total ever.

    For you people who continue to believe that this doesn’t have an effect on the local colleges … well, you’re just being obstinate.

    1. now it looks like the trend will be reversed next year as there seems to be already more P5 prospects than this year, there still is no reason to believe that this area will once again be ever close to the fertile recruiting area it was for so long

    2. Sad that there is only ONE player in Pitt’s incoming class from the Pittsburgh area (the only one from PA too).

      That player is Dayon Hayes from Westinghouse. Ironically, Hayes appears to be one of the most dynamic looking of the incoming players…

      BTW, this class has 5 from Florida, three each from GA and OH. Two from NY, and one each from Maryland, NJ, SC, and Delaware. Then a Juco and a transfer from CA.

  36. I just read on Twitter Kyle Nunn transferred to Findley.

    He was solid on special teams but this puts Pitt back at 85 scholarships.

    1. Dunn was a 6′ 3″ 230 LB at Pitt. His size should have made him an ideal candidate to take over the middle linebacker position. His special team play also suggests he wasn’t exactly slow of foot. But for whatever reason he was unable to move up the depth chart for Pitt at LB.

  37. I would like to know where Micheal Smith stands with the WR unit? He’s 6’1″ 215lbs as a RS Soph. Is he being recruited over? If he is not in the two deep this spring I think it may be time for time for him to move on as well. Although he was supposed to be a raw talent with little experience. I guess the coaches will know which direction to nudge him?

      Good to get used to playing a warm-weather sport in the chilly weather…😊

      The new turf looked good. I think Mark commented on this before, but I thought the large Panther Head Logo on the turf in centerfield looked quite good.

          And, BTW, you commented a few times that Paris should come back so he can get bigger and stronger. I think that was evident last night at the LOI event. Both Damar and Paris were in sweats, but Damar looked like an NFLer. I know it’s different once they put those uniforms on, but definitely seemed like there’s room for Paris to gain some size.

          But on that note, I was totally fooled by Patrick Jones. I thought he would look bulkier, but he was impressively tall and lean. I really thought, at first, that he was one of the younger DEs who hadn’t filled-out yet.

  40. another reminder that Pitt BB fans need to be patient. Here is an excerpt from a recruiting article from Rivals recruiting analyst Corey Evans

    The fact that Jeff Capel took over a Pitt program riding a 19-game ACC losing streak and now has Panthers sitting in sixth place should tell you all that you need to hear.

    Sure, Pitt has yet to win many high-stakes recruiting battles, but it has also developed under-the-radar talent, secured a top-40 2020 recruiting class and already sits with the commitment of top-40 sophomore Jalen Hood-Schifino. I expect the Panthers to continue to climb the ACC’s pecking order thanks to the type of talent that they enroll and Capel’s approach in the coach’s box.

    Regarding future top-25 classes, if Capel hits on the right prospects next year, it is attainable. The Panthers are in a good spot with Adama Sanogo and Will Jeffress, are one of the few standing out for four-star center Nnanna Njoku, and could make a run at top-30 guard Jalen Warley. Regardless, I would expect consistent top-40 classes every fall, similar to what was saw in the early signing period.

  41. Missed the hoops game last night. Vegas Hangover from the Super Bowl. By the lack of comments, it must have been a blah type game. No excitement. No opportunity to win. Disappointing because ND is very beatable this year. I was hoping they could go 5-4 over the last nine and sneak into the dance. Welp, they need to go 5-3 over the next 8 to have a chance. And win a game in the tourney…or maybe 2.

    Back to recruiting. I guess the coaches were forced into having “the conversation” with Nunn, once the kicker used a powerplay to require a full scholarship. More and more, the talent controls the decision-makers.

    Finally, I am one that doesn’t get caught up in recruiting areas. Recruiting for all P5 teams is a national practice, not local. The Dairy College has nothing local, but they get after it, every year. It’s a mindset. I look at a smaller recruiting base as a positive because it keeps the big programs from visiting as often and should result in less cherry picking. When the numbers are down, Pitt should be all over the local teams, planting seeds. They should also be telling the coaches in the area that Pitt will be here every year and that the other coaches only come around when they want something. High school coaches are getting used locally by these big programs that swoop in and take kids away. The high school coaches need to wake up and Pitt should be hammering that message every chance they get.

  50. From the result of the ND game, Pitt is clearly not NCAA Tournament bound. I think they are a year away. Hopefully they can win a sufficient number of remaining games to qualify for the NIT, which would provide valuable tournament experience.

      1. I saw early Springsteen at the Mosque, Had seats on the second balcony. End of concert the lights went on so we started matriculating down the stairs when he surprisingly comes back out and starts up again for a few songs. House lights come back on and we make our way down to the first floor……. Yep he comes back out. The place had practically cleared out but we ran back in to catch Bruce again. watched him on all three levels. I’ll never forget that.

Warren Haynes had just joined the band and seemed to provide the spark that brought back memories of the original version when Duane was alive.

So with Hallett in place as a Pitt safety from Texas who know him many other might consider coming cross country to play at Pitt. if you want to play defense in the NFL Pitt gives all its DB’s and Safties the opportunity to excel with its single man \coverage style of play.

    2. My Mosque shows are all mid-late 80s. Buffett acoustic was great. Also ELP, BOC, Pat Metheny, and a heavily coked out Stephen Stills blown away by his opening act America.

      I saw the Avett Brothers at the Pete. It’s decent, but the sound along the sides of the court can be iffy.

  82. Okay, I read today that Lucas Krull said he came to Pitt because of Coach Whipple’s rep with using TEs. And the Coach Duzz and Coach Whip were the first to contact Lucas when he ducked his head and entered the portal.

    It’s also highly likely that Joey Yellen came to Pitt because of Coach Whip — who I read contacted him within a couple hours of him entering the portal.

    Course time will tell, but seems like the hiring of Coach Whip has helped attract offensive talent to Pitt…

  83. OK since we are going all out on Pitt POV-ites, concerts-shared stories here is another TRUE STORY.

    My roommate’s mother at Pitt sophomore year was a waitress at the Howard Johnson’s in the Monessen area. She had a regular, favorite customer who asked her if she wanted 2 free tickets to see this new British ensemble “the Beatles” in Pittsburgh (that would be September 14, 1964)?

    My roommate’s mother said, “Yes.”

    Her husband absolutely refused to go so she took my roommate who was 12 at the time.

    My roommate remembers the tickets being ballpark $6.50, but he lost the ticket stubs.

    His mother recently passed away at age 92 and we talked about this at her funeral and he said the most unbelievable thing about it was how cavalier his Mom’s customer was with the tickets.

  84. In the 70s at the Civic Arena w Sammy Hagar (The Rock Rocker) opening. Saw Earth, Wind, and Fire with Ramsey Lewis opening, and Kansas w Frank Marino and Mahogany Rush opening. At either the Stanley or Syria Mosque I saw Alice Cooper, Howie Mandel, and Martin Mull ( all different shows lol).
    I’ll save the shows at Starlake Amphitheatre for another time.

  85. Haha, left out the headliner in my first sentence above…it was Boston w Sammy Hagar opening. That was when they were still doing festival seating. When the doors opened, my feet never left the ground entering the building. It’s a wonder more people were trampled to death going to those shows!

  88. Saw Southside Johnny at the Mosque on the eve of the Steelers superbowl in 79. In between songs we were all chanting DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE! I forget who the headliner was or maybe they were?

  89. Tickets for the Stones range from $171 in upper deck to $1577 right in front of the stage. Maybe a Texas oil barren here can afford this but too rich for a retiree on a limited income

    PS – tickets for 4 Way Street Tour with 3 openers was $12. 5 months later, tickets for Super Bowl IX in New Orleans was $20

  92. Something doesn’t feel right about the “Narduzzi chooses Pitt” story. I suspect there was contact made by MSU or persons connected with MSU, probably before their coach retired. It’s possible he knew they would leak his name. Most likely Narduzzi leveraged the opportunity to improve his situation.

  94. The only concert I saw at Pitt was Electric Light Orchestra at the Civic Arena in 1977 I think. I was too poor to afford to go to concerts. I luckily went with a nice guy who paid for my ticket.

  95. How about the Cadillac Ranch outdoor venue. Would take a keg with us. New Riders, Pure Prarie league. Grave at the Decade kudos Ike some good memories. Also Billey Joel at Clarion U. In 1977. Will Nelson at Pepsi Cola Roadhouse, David hAllen Coe also at the roadhouse.

  96. During my Pitt years I saw Steve Winwood and Gloria Estafan and Miami Sound Machine in separate shows at the Palumbo. Yes, I have diverse musical tastes. And Ray, Marilyn McCoo would be very easy to fall for!

      Dane Jackson is the only Pitt Player invites to the NFL Combine. I was surprised the FL transfer LB-er wasn’t invited. Brightwell and Ffrench left out as well.

      Charlotte, Maryland, URI, W_F, UVA, Vandy & Utah St with 3 each
