PITTSBURGH—Chris Doleman, a star defensive end at Pitt from 1981-84 who went on to a Hall of Fame career as a dominant pass rusher in the NFL, has passed away. He was 58.
While at Pitt, Doleman displayed the athletic and ferocious style that would characterize his pro career. An immediate starter upon his arrival from Valley Forge Military Academy in 1981, he would be a vital part of some of the greatest defenses in school history.
Doleman finished his college career third all-time at Pitt with 25 sacks, a total that still ranks eighth nearly four decades later. He played in the Sugar, Cotton and Fiesta bowl games, while helping the Panthers earn three Top 20 finishes, including a No. 2 ranking in 1981 and No. 9 finish in 1982.
As a senior, Doleman was elected a Pitt tri-captain with linebacker Troy Benson and offensive tackle Bill Fralic. In addition to his immense athletic gifts, the 6-foot-5 Doleman also set a standard with his desire and relentless play.
The late Foge Fazio, Doleman’s defensive coordinator in 1981 before serving as head coach from 1982-85, said: “Sometimes we’ll stop the game film just to point out to the team Chris’ desire and hustle to get there.”
The fourth-overall pick of the 1985 draft by the Minnesota Vikings, Doleman played 15 seasons in the NFL and holds status as one of the most productive pass rushers of all time. A defensive end and outside linebacker, he was an eight-time Pro Bowler, earning six berths as a member of the Vikings and one each as a member of the Atlanta Falcons and San Francisco 49ers.
He was a first team All-Pro three times and was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1990s. Upon his retirement in 1999, Doleman’s 150.5 career sacks ranked fourth in league history and he was tied for third with eight seasons in which he recorded 10 or more sacks.
Doleman received his Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement in 2012.
“I had only been at Pitt for a few months when I first met Chris and he could not have been more supportive and enthusiastic about the University of Pittsburgh,” Pitt head coachPat Narduzzi said. “It was obvious that he took great pride in being a Panther. I remember we had him as our honorary captain when we played at Georgia Tech one year and he was so energetic with our kids. You know he wanted to put on that Pitt helmet one more time. Our deepest sympathies to the Doleman family. His passing is a great loss for all of us, but his memory and legacy, on and off the field, will never be forgotten.”

Pitt Places Five on All-ACC Academic Football Team
PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh placed five student-athletes on the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Football Team, it was announced by the ACC this morning.
Pitt’s 2019 All-ACC Academic Football Team honorees are sophomore defensive endDeslin Alexandre, sophomore punter Kirk Christodoulou, graduate linebacker Kylan Johnson, redshirt freshman offensive guard Jake Kradel and junior center Jimmy Morrissey.
Morrissey received his third consecutive All-ACC Academic honor, while Christodoulou was honored for the second straight year.
The Panthers have had at least five All-ACC Academic selections in each season of Pat Narduzzi’s tenure (since 2015).
“Pitt is annually well represented on the All-ACC Academic Football Team and that’s a big point of pride for us,” Narduzzi said. “Our goal as a football program is to achieve excellence in all that we do. These five young men really embody that. They are not only outstanding players, but also decorated students and leaders. We’re extremely proud of Deslin, Kirk, Kylan, Jake and Jimmy.”
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned at least a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a minimum 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the team.
Alexandre (Pompano Beach, Fla./Deerfield Beach) started all 13 games for Pitt’s nationally ranked defense and compiled 38 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks and a fumble recovery. Alexandre is a communication major.
In his second season as Pitt’s starting punter, Christodoulou (Melbourne, Australia/Balwyn) averaged a career-high 42.9 yards on 57 punts. He placed 22 inside the 20-yard line and 21 of his punts resulted in a fair catch, both personal highs. Christodoulou completed his bachelor’s degree in finance this past December.
Johnson (Dallas, Texas/Skyline) provided an immediate impact upon joining Pitt as a 2019 graduate transfer from Florida. A starter in every game, he totaled 54 stops, 10.5 TFLs, 6.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Johnson is enrolled in Pitt’s School of Social Work.
In his first active season, Kradel (Butler, Pa./Butler Senior) became a lynchpin on the Panthers’ offensive line, starting the final seven games at right guard. His play was instrumental for a unit that passed for more than 3,400 yards, Pitt’s highest total through the air since 2003. Kradel is an economics major.
Morrissey (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) established himself as one of the top centers in all of college football. The first-team All-ACC performer did not surrender a sack the entire season and also rated as the Panthers’ top run blocker. Selected a Pitt team captain as a junior, he went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in finance and marketing in December.

a couple of thoughts ….
1) both Cam Heyward and his mom tweeted out their condolences and stated what a great comfort Doleman was to their family 15 years ago during Ironhead’s final years. They were Pitt teammates for 2 seasons (I believe). By all accounts, Chris was a really great guy
2) as stated in the post, on-the-field play is also taken in account for the All-ACC team … thus a guy like Jimmy Medure, who played just special teams, probably wouldn’t qualify

Typical FUNNY post……jeff george performed miraculously for the team, as did the two tight ends, and the left tackle Ulizio, and petrishen…..but focus should be on the one that played well. I liked Johnson. He played well. That said, it could have been part of the reason Reynolds left. Reynolds may have been disgruntled and acted once johnson was promised the starting role. Regardless, it creates a need to replace two linebackers.
I don’t think it is making fun of transfers as they have a place on a squad. The use of transfers can fill one or maybe two spots due to injury or nfl draft. Anything more and it just highlights the lack of recruiting expertise and talent development.

Huff, look at the teams that have played in the playoffs recently, look at the recent Heisman Trophy winners, look at Nate Peterman. It’s all the rage in college football these days. Narduzzi was way ahead of his time. Consider the fuss made on this site concerning PWO. Again PN ahead of the times? BTW and FWI, Jeff George did not use a scholarship. Another BTW and I have tried to avoid spelling it out for all, Reynolds was politely asked to leave the team.

Chris Doleman 8/16/61- I/28/20. I remember meeting him my freshman year in the Tower C lobby. Dole was (Fralic as well) were one of the biggest guys I’ve seen in college. A genuine soul that did it right! He didn’t forget about the DASH. The dash is how you live your life. #H2P

I often wonder how Pitt was able to bring in such players of commitment and character. Doleman was a special player and Pitt’s commitment to academic excellence is reminiscent of the days when so many players became doctors, dentists and lawyers. We all want to win but these players demonstrate that there are other characteristics that are important and make Pitt great.

FWIW I’ve shepherded a GBM significant other through the cycle .. here is what I learned / slash what I would do if an MRI showed something in my skull and the Drs wanted to do a biopsy…

Are you saying not to take Melatonin? I never need that, sleep like a baby, but my brother takes it. I got him off statins too and told him to take CoQ10. He was have leg pain and bad memory loss. He’s already on blood thiners.

good stuff 33-3…POV health is important…I had the honor of treating Dr.Darrell Bigner who was the lead researcher at Duke on cancerous brain tumors and the Doc who diagnosed Teddy Kennedy. They were doing research with polio virus on the tumors. They ran a segment about Dr. Bigner and brain cancer research on 60 minutes a couple of years ago that is archived. He recently retired…what a great guy he is….hopefully, someday they can come up with something that gives hope…right now-not so much.
A lost a frat brother a few years ago…his name was Jay Sher who left PITT and became a renowned endocrinologist in New Jersey. Jay was a 16 year old freshmen when we met at PITT both wanting to become physicians…Jay was brilliant and me not so much…he tutored me in chemistry when there was no where to turn for good help and for that I will be forever grateful….

Really happy for Coach White, the coaching staff, and the women’s team tonight. They came back from being down by 12 in the second half to get the win. Dragged my wife to the game and we helped cheered them on.
Some glimpses tonight of what the future holds as Day Harris had a tremendous second half. She’s still a turnover machine, but she made some outstanding drives and scores tonight.
This team is oddly similar to the men’s team in that their half-court offense and shooting is pretty poor, but they have players who can drive to the hoop.
Going to be an agonizingly slow process, but when these freshmen are juniors, this will be a formidable team, IMHO..

Sat near Coach White’s wife during the women’s game. She was into the game big-time — even getting on the refs…
I talked to her a bit. She said it’s been tough this season, but she said the thing about the women’s game is the players stay 4 years, and it’s the juniors and seniors who power the good teams. I agree with her on that…
Another thing, of course the players were happy after the game, but what impresses me about these players is how they are willing to engage with the fans. A couple of them went up into the stands to greet fans. And they were especially nice to the kids who were in attendance.

Saw Tull twice at the Arena. Heard them earlier than most since my soph room mate had spent some years in London before coming to Pitt. He turned me on to Tull and Floyd in the fall of 69. I didn’t get Floyd’s Uma Gumma, but loved Tull’s early stuff. Got the records at Flo’s. Lived above Flo’s one year, pretty convenient for a barfly.
Doleman was a lot like Curtis Martin in that while he had some impact at Pitt, he really turned it on in the Pro’s. It is tough losing these guys at such a young age, like Fralic he was a better man than a football player, and that is saying a lot.
Considering Pitt’s win percentage in modern times we really have had more than our share of greatness. A couple of future HOF guys would put us over the top right now. How about it Derrick Davis?

I guess because Doleman’s senior year they went 3-7. He had 25 sacks in his career which is excellent, but no big impact on wins and losses. He was there for the decline of Pitt football, obviously not his fault but by comparison to his pro career pretty weak.

Doleman also had an injury plagued senior year, nothing major but he played dinged up he was hurt the 1st game versus BYU and had a lot of nagging injuries the entire season.
He was a force on the field but sadly Pitt went into decline because Jackie left and Foge although a brilliant DC was not even a mediocre head coach.

Pitt went into decline because Jackie recruited Jelic over Kosar and Foge wasn’t good enough to overcome that. Foge also had bad bosses who knew zip about the sport.

Cummings won the post Dan Marino job but got hurt versus Tennessee in the opener and it was Congemi all the way.

Is Comcast primarily a northern cable system? That would explain it since its clear the ACC acknowledges its Northern members grudgingly and with general contempt.

XFINITY from Comcast offers coverage in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Pa and on and on. I have Xfinity and live in Virginia.
There is a study that shows Xfinity’s footprint meshes well withthe ACC footprint, although either Spectrum or Charter are big in NC and already carry the ACCN.

Just saw that Rivals has downgraded Schifino from a 5 star to a 4 star. Does anyone think that if he had committed to Duke, NC, KY or Kan. instead of Pitt that he would have been downgraded. Good old star ratings. It is amazing when someone commits to a high profile school (both FB and BB) that their star ratings go up. So much for stars!

^^ That’s a joke and why I don’t consider Rivals the bible of recruiting. If Schifino would have committed to Duke he would have elevated to 6*’s . I look at the bigger picture from all sides and not just what fits what I want to see but what the over-all services see and how they evaluate talent

ike — former Panther corner K’Waun Williams, all 5’9” of him, will be playing in the Super Bowl. He had one offer and it was Pitt. Though Akron wanted him to walk-on, so there is that. 😊
Only reason Pitt offered was Jeff Hafley was watching film of a teammate who had committed to Pitt, and Hafley noticed Williams.
While at Pitt, Williams played for Wanny, Todd Graham, and Paul Chryst. Yikes!
Not invited to any NFL combine; not drafted; not signed as free agent until Hafley, who by then was coaching for the Browns, insisted they bring Williams in for a rookie tryout.
Williams was starting by his 6th game with the Browns. Now he’s on a three year contract with the 49ers and playing nickel corner in the Super Bowl…👍
Williams perseverance is a great story…

80% of P-5 teams have better recruiting classes in 2020.

In case it flew over anyone’s head here, Narduzzi did not throw Tim Brown under the bus and sort of let Brown figure out he would be best suited elsewhere. Narduzzi truly looks after the players he talks to, recruits and are on the PITT team. Oh and he makes sure he picks up recruits and the family at the airport.

Used to really be a huge area for apple production, then the industry almost vanished from the area. I was told it was due to the low cost of apples from China. Crazy that the cost of importing them to US was still lower than growing locally.
In recent years, there has been a re-emergence of orchards…A number have popped up along Rt 522.
My cousins attend the festival most years and have a great time.

I lived not far from there, Martinsburg , WV, while doing some clinical training at the VA hospital there. That’s where I met my wife.
Farther back in HS our band marched in the Apple Blossom Festival that Miss Dorsett will be the queen of.
Fond memories of that area.

The Bloom is a great event. Back when I lived in Winchester in the 1900’s Folks will place empty chairs along the parade routes on Thursday to reserve their spots for Friday’s Fireman Parade and the Big Apple all day parade on Saturday.
It’s like a big tailgate stretched along the city streets for miles…lot’s of great food and drink to be had…perhaps the most inebriated few miles per capital in the US during the parades.
Met Katie Couric(?) from CBS morning show when she was Parade Queen.
Would recommend anyone who loves a parade to check it out. And lots of Civil War battlefields in the area too if you are into history.

Pitt wrestling, ranked #10 goes up against #4 NC State today.
In fact, Pitt goes up against three top 10 teams in their final five dual matches.
I wish I lived closer to the burg, I’d go watch some elite wrestling.
These will be good tests for this coach Gavin lead team as they are 0-2 so far this season against top 10 teams. Ok St and tOSU.

I have a lot of respect for wrestlers. Went out for varsity wrestling in ninth grade. One sport where being a lightweight didn’t disqualify you. Although I was decent at it, did not like it at all. Workouts were the most aerobically challenging that I ever experienced. Always trying to maintain the lowest weight class possible.Wrestling with another sweaty guy trying to hurt you. Learning different techniques to gain leverage.
Have to have a certain mentality to be good at it. I didn’t have it.
Very happy to find gymnastics the next year.

Pessimists typically have some sort of connection to a situation that may bring up unresolved issues from their lives.
Misery loves company. A pessimist is intentionally being negative and spreading their negative opinions to people all the time. There’s no room for people like this in your life, because bad moods are contagious and they can and will affect you at some point.

I know of no realist on this board that fits this goosey definition. I see Pitt fans as three groups – koolaid, vinegar and water drinkers.
As an example: koolaid drinkers think Narduzzi is a great recruiter. Vinegar drinkers think he is lousy. Water drinkers think he is o.k. or just dont care.
I believe most fans are in the water category but thats not because they have an opinion. Its because they just dont care.
when your fans dont care, you have the lowest donation rate in the ACC, you have the lowest % of capacity for attendance, you have sports programs attended by more dogs than humans (see Coach Jay’s brilliant comment)
and in regards to recruiting, Pitt is always ranked third or fourth best in the Coastal. Typically behind teams like Miami and Va Tech. But this year, Tech didnt do so good but the other Tech did (GA). And NC did very good. Recruiting is all relative. Pitt needs to do better if it wants to stay competitive in the Coastal. One Coastal title in 5 years tells me that Pitt is doing o.k. in terms of coaching and recruiting. O.K. to me is just mediocre.
So just call me a pessimist if you want. You can blame it on the trauma from my freshman year when I made the mistake of ordering large ‘O’ fries

Tex I have never heard anyone refer to Narduzzi as a great recruiter. Not even the biggest homers. I have heard the so called realists call him a terrible recruiter though. That is why I argue there is unfair and unrealistic vitriol from the “realists toward Narduzzi.

He’s an average recruiter to me. Good on the D side. Not so good on the O side. It does appear that he has the assistants now who can be good recruiters. Need to keep pace with the Tech’s and NC. Miami will always get the talent.

Tex I think that’s pretty fair. I would rate him above average recruiter but not great. He does well on defense and identifies lower rated players that turned out to be pretty good. The offensive recruiting has been suspect especially oline and tight end. I like the offensive line prospects he lands but it seems like year in and year out he just doesn’t get enough of them.

ND ACC cut should be what is left after their NBC money is deducted from their ACC cut.
ACC needs to get ND to decide – in or out now. Dumb situation.

The ACC figures dont include the extra roughly $10M from the new ACC network.

I agree about ND but Maryland ain’t giving up 10 mil per year, main reason they left. That and very hard feelings towards the Carolina dynasties.

sadly, if it weren’t for ND, each ACC team would be making less than $29m per …. I would think. They are required to play 5 ACC teams each year and that likely increases ESPN’s payout

No. 12 Brush 69, Willoughby South 59: John Hugley powered Brush (13-5) with 23 points, 14 rebounds and four assists in their closest Western Reserve Conference game of the season.
Sophomore Elmore James, who scored a school-record 45 points earlier this week, finished with 19 points and seven rebounds. He also had four steals, while freshman guard Marlon Barnes added 12 points.

Pitt women’s BB lost big today to a ranked FSU team. It was Pink-the-Pete day and there was a decent crowd.
Pitt still struggling to score — they only scored one bucket in the first quarter! Fortunately, FSU was cold too and remarkably enough the game was tied at 20 at the half. FSU easily pulled away in the second half.
The good news is that freshman PG Day Harris is progressing nicely. She looks like an all-ACC player in the making. Today she hit a couple threes, hit a couple pull-up jumpers, and scored on some drives… Patience!
As an aside, the Dance Team performed and all I’ll say is that the Dance Team was way more impressive watching them from the Zoo versus watching them at Heinz Field…👍

PITTSBURGH, PA. – The fourth ranked NC State wrestling team up its season record to a perfect 12-0 as the Wolfpack scored a 21-12 win at #10 Pitt in ACC action. NC State won six of the 10 bouts, including five straight at one point, and added a pair of bonus point wins while not conceding any.
The win was the first at a top-10 opponent since the Pack win 21-17 at #2 Iowa in 2016.
Bummer – not a good finish as Pitt lost 5 straight matches.

I root for PITT to win at everything and anything they do. Sports, Academics, the PITT Band, the Dance Girls to have a good showing, hell, like I said, I root for everything PITT. It’s just that I’m not as passionate at some of those things. If PITT had a women’s football team I might have bought season tickets to that as well. Point is, #1 I am a PITT football fan and #2 a PITT basketball fan. I also pay attention to wrestling and volleyball. The rest is like the cherry on top of a soda. Bonus, I would love for the PITT baseball team to take off as well.

I wish Pitt would put a full court press on Comcast to get this fixed. How can Pitt expect to rebuild a fan base for all sports if nobody can see them. They should be complaining everyday.
