Tuesday, January 21st:  Former Pitt Football Coach Todd Graham was named head coach at Hawaii.  Predictably this brought many a “I guess Penny has family in Honolulu” jokes forth from the Pitt faithful.  And those jokes were not unjustified.  It also brought forth this, which I personally happen to prefer:

Grade:  C.  This has absolutely no bearing on Pitt sports whatsoever, but it’s always fun to make a joke at Fraud Graham’s expense.

Wednesday, January 22nd:  Pitt’s 2020 football schedule was unveiled today.  Those of you who are still onboard with the ‘Duz (which should be most of you based on the survey results…) should print this out and put it by your bedside table:

Grade:  Scheduling is an art and not a science.  For years Pitt fans have decried Pitt’s schedule as too difficult, and yet the minute you see three cupcakes on the slate fans will bemoan the fact that there are no interesting games.  This schedule does in fact feature three cupcakes (well three winnables at least…Marshall is always a bit of a wildcard), and also feature a rivalry game at Heinz, not to mention a winnable crossover game against a rebuilding Florida State.  Swap the Domers out for the Hoopies or the Nits and I’d give this one and A.  But as it sits, I’ll settle for a B, and I’ll hope we can finish strong.  Grade:  B.

Boosters Jeff and Sandra Martcheck gave $1.25M to the Victory Heights Initiative.  In return the Strength and Conditioning center will bear their name, and rightfully so.  Well done Martcheks!  Grade:  Seven figure donations to Pitt athletics will always grade out as A+.

Pitt managed to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against Boston College on Tuesday night, pulling out an agonizingly sloppy 74-72 win.  Grade:  D+.  A loss would have been an F, but this win was about as ugly as they come.  Pitt earned a passing grade…just barely.

Thursday, January 23rd:  Pitt Freshman WR Jared Wayne earned the “True Freshman Spotlight” from NCAAF Nation’s Twitter account.  Grade:  B.  Would have been an A but 5 games burned his redshirt.  Also I’d like to see young Jared prove himself over a full season.  Nonetheless, put him on the preseason list of potential breakout candidates.

Reports of Dane Jackson started to surface from Senior Bowl practice, and they were all good.  Grade:  A.  Alumni improves draft stock.  Tough to say anything bad about that.

Jim Medure was honored as The National Football Foundation’s Scholar Athlete of the Day.  Grade:  A.  (Unless his GPA was less than an A, in which case the grade will be taken down to match)

Pittsburgh Sports Now leaked the S&C Hire prior to the official announcement.

Grade:  C.  PSN taking a lot of heat for leaks lately, and all that aside, the jury is definitely out on Stacchiotti.  Pros:  He’s young, he’s been a fast riser (1 year at every stop), he worked in the pro’s and he is local.  Cons:  He’s young, he’s been a fast riser (will he stay more than a year?), he’s never run his own S&C program.

James Conner announced the release of his autobiography.  I personally love reading football books during the offseason, and I encourage all Pitt fans to read this one and support one of our most respected alumni.  It goes on sale 6/6/2020

Grade:  A.  Dude wrote a book.

Pitt inked a speedy local PWO.  Grade:  B.  Congrats to him.  While PWO’s have a slim chance of seeing the field, you never know who is the next George Astin (or in Lewis’ case Hunter Renfrow)

Kenny Pickett got himself onto a list.  Grade C.  It’s a preseason list from an account with 11,000 followers.  (That’s not very much as far as influencers go… for those who aren’t up on their social media).  I want to see Kenny succeed as much as the next guy, but he’s going to have to prove it on the field.

Pitt Women’s BB got blown out by NC State.  Grade D.  It’s rebuild and we all know that.  I don’t have the heart to go any lower.

On the bright side, Aysia Bugg cracked a three-point milestone.  I give her and A for her accomplishment.

And if Thursday wasn’t busy enough… Jaylen Twyman was named to ESPN’s Way-Too-Early-All-America team.  If he stays as hungry as he did last off season he just might make it to the real one.  Grade:  A.  It does without saying that this kind of press is good for the program.

Friday, January 24th:   Pitt’s S&C Coach was “officially” announced.  See above for commentary and grade.

Athlon released their early 2020 football predictions.  Pitt was ranked 4th in the Coastal. Grade:  C.  Seems like Pitt is always ranked in the middle of the pack in these things, and frankly, I’m glad we are.  There is nothing worse than Pitt football falling flat in the face of high expectations.

Saturday, January 25th:  Pitt wresting shut out Duke for its first ACC Win.  Grade:  A.  Who cares if Duke is a basketball school.  This was an old school A$$ WUPping.

Pitt Swimming and Diving dominated the Western Pennsylvania Invitational.  The words “Pitt” and “Dominating” belong in the same sentence more often.  Grade:  A.

Pitt Men’s Basketball lost to Syracuse 61-69.  Slow start, but they battled.  Moral victories don’t exist, do they?  When you’re in year two of a complete rebuild I guess they do.  Grade:  C-.  (Yes I’m aware that I graded this higher than the win against BC…)

A cadre of Virginians made their way to The Southside to check out the football program. Coach Beatty is clearly making his presence felt. Grade: B. No commits but always good to see positive momentum.

Sunday, January 26th:  Basketball legend Kobe Bryant died in a helicopter crash today.  The news was sudden and jarring.  This had no bearing on Pitt sports, but here is Larry Fitzgerald’s reaction.  Sums it up better than I ever could.  I’m withholding my grade for the week in light of this tragic event.  May his family find peace after their mourning.

    Money will keep Pitt trending in the right direction as much as anything can.

    From the last thread, it may have been Dan72 that questioned why no scripted plays from Capel, and I have been thinking the same thing. At the beginning of the game, or after time outs, it makes too much sense. Like a set piece in soccer, it gives the players specific tasks to execute, everyone is on the same page and if they do their job it works. There are fewer decisions to be made therefore fewer opportunities for mistakes.

    As was also said, Jamie was all about the script and little room for creativity and athleticism and Capel is the complete opposite. No question, I prefer Capel, but a few set plays, at the beginning and end of games makes a lot of sense to me.

  6. The similarities between the football and basketball teams are amazing. They both had and have enough strengths to be competitive, but enough weaknesses to make most games very close. When they play well they can win, when they don’t, well you know…

    They are both exciting and frustrating to watch. They both make great and stupid plays.

    They both are pretty young and return most of the team next year.

    The football team faded down the stretch, I blame the lack of depth on offense and injuries to Ffrench and Mack.

    What will the basketball team do from here out? It is anyone’s guess. They also have a lack of depth, but have the potential to surprise.

    3. I will be there with my family. Enjoyed a game there this past football season (toured campus with son and they gave out tickets to the Cincinnati game ). They actually will let you leave the stadium at half time and come back in. Huntingdon was pretty rough due to the drugs, but they have cleaned up the crime the past few years.

  12. Arnie use to fly by near our house when he was landing, (airport close by) you could tell it was his jet as it had an umbrella painted on the tail section.

    Payne Stewert also had a private Learjet. Sorry about that.

  13. Played a par 3 with Payne on my 40th Birthday in Memphis Tourney on Pro Am Day. Once he beat the coke habit he became a wonderful person. Horrible tragedy.

  20. Was at the Memorial in 1992 and Payne just drained a 25 foot putt for a sand save. We were in an area walking between green and the next tee box and I say “Great save Payne”. His response to me was “you know, only Jesus saves more”. Shows how confident he was in his game and as Dan pointed out, what a great person he became.

    I also got into a scrap with Jack Nicklaus during the same tournament. It was at a par 3 and Nicklaus was on the tee. I made sure that I got in line with the tv cameras and as he was preparing to swing, swung and followed thru, I hold up my Let’s Go Pens sign that I got from the pens playoff game. Nicklaus sees it..gets mad and says “wrong sport”. I said Let’s Go Pens!!! He was mad!! Surprised i didn’t get an escort out.

    I stick with my prior grade of B/C………given our opponent in hoops last week.

  27. Missing – If that is true, another example of the clueless Pirate organization. Particularly stupid considering they both share the same radio station broadcasting their games locally.

    MM – Continue to love this format and posting idea. Agree with the other MM, MajorMajors, any bball win in the ACC is at least a B considering where we have come from. Bball is one of those sports where the number of games inevitably leads to some that are just not crisp and well played. Shutting out Duke in wrestling, well done.

    As for Connors, I am one of his biggest supporters, but frankly the young man can not and will not be able to stand up to the rigors of the NFL. Steelers will draft a RB and along with what they have, JC is likely to be gone in a year or two. Too bad, hard to tell what if anything his chemo treatments did to his strength and stamina. His straight up, head-on running style does not portend well for longevity in the NFL.

    1. ^^ BL, The show began in 1962 and lasted only a year or two and it was before my time. (I was seven years old) I’ve heard of it but Patsy never would have let me watch it. After-all, we only had one 13″ black and white TV and shows like Art Linkletter, Bonanza, Mr Ed and candid camera dominated our airwaves. The show was kind of like a precursor of The Monty Python Show. Which I did watch and love.

  32. I slightly disagree with many on this blog who think that Conner is washed up. Many Steeler fans have been questioning his manhood since the season ended. Judging from his toughness and ability to beat cancer, I suspect he will be using this off season to get stronger and better to show his detractors they are wrong. He will have his last contract year to prove himself and I predict a 1000 yd season for him.

    1. Not washed up, just too often bit by the injury bug. He needs to figure out how to condition himself against that, and adapt his running style as well. If he cans do that he’ll play until he’s 30 at least. If not, who knows?

    2. I think James has kind of re-invented himself in the pros. At Pitt, he just ran as a bully who was stronger and more aggressive than those trying to tackle him.

      Since he doesn’t have the body to do that in the NFL, I think he studied Leveon Bell and now he actually tries — and sometimes succeeds at — making a quick fake one way and go the other…

      My biggest disappointment with him (can’t control injuries in my book), has been the fumbles at crucial times late in games…

      I think the Steelers will draft a running back, but I hope JC continues to get carries and catch passes…

He needs to make this year count, and the. follow it up next year and he’ll be set for life. A 25 year old RB entering the free agent market is in his prime…

  41. Playing Running back in the NFL is the most brutal of positions. You have the biggest strongest guys trying to hit you and rip the ball from your hands. You have the greatest opportunity for head trauma. You have the shortest average career because of these factors.

    That is why I argued that for him, D-End would have been a better option, they make more money and have longer careers. Unfortunately for Conner, he was a spectacular college running back so we will never know if he would have been that good of a D-End.

    I think it is laughable to think he could make a position change at this point. It just isn’t done, too much of a learning curve.

    It sure looks like his career will be a short one, but it won’t be because of mental toughness, it just appears that his body will not hold up.

    I remember when the fans were critical of Franco for going out of bounds, instead of taking the hits to get those last few yards. Turns out Franco was pretty smart and was usually around at the end of the year.

    The trend does not look good for Conner, but he has most certainly beaten the odds before so who knows.

    Football continues to change, concussion protocols require guys to miss games. guys used to play through many more injuries, and pay for it later. Drugs of all kinds were more prevalent, at least I think that has changed. Steroids, amphetamines, opiods were commonly used before after and during games.

    Still, a very brutal sport.

  42. FB Recruiting – Pitt’s current class has slipped to a ranking of 48th – two similar programs with newer HC’s are at 29th and 31st (wvcc and Purdue).

    That ranking of 48th puts 75% of P5 programs ahead of Pitt. Last year’s class was ranked 49th. Tough to win in a P5 conference with numbers lyke that.

Rick, I looked at Rivals 2020 rankings…we are ranked 48th but our average star rating in in the same range as several teams ranked in the 20’s including UCLA, TWERPS and the Hoopies…They just have more incoming players than us..We gotta silently count those 3 or 4 who decided to stay another year plus a good looking transfer QB and TE who are not part of the 17 newbies….next year we will see 20 plus recruits (Ihope)

    1. The problem is lack of offensive talent. Duz and co are great at the defense evaluation side. Not so much on O. Hopefully whipple and a few years of OC stability will change that

I’m not trying to be optimistic here but what’s the chance that lightning strikes twice from U of F? If he has a Kylan Johnson like season he’ll be the best Pitt TE since Dickerson

Key will be development of O-lineman….very few 5-4 stars OL available as in-coming freshman, heck, both O-lines in the Super Bowl are low ranked guys…most of these kids grow/mature into real men over 2-3 years…Duzz has to “get it” We have to hit on all cylinders to take the next step…and it’s been to damn long since PITT has fired on all cylinders…..

    Heading to Raleigh-Durham at lunch..fellow running our company retirement account got us tickets to Cameron Indoor for tonight”s game..Duke favored by 16..what’s with that…wish he had one more ticket so I could sit Coach dan72 beside me…he know’s his BB and it’s morphed into a total abstract of what I played in HS…looking for a competitive game but it’s about time for some team to start to take charge in the ACC and that will most likely be the Dookies…have I told you how much I LOVE PITT being in the ACC…they are all home games for me n JeanieB in 2020 now that we are season ticket holders…I can almost taste those pepperoni rolls at the tailgate.

  45. Last year’s class had 19 commitments, so far this it’s 17. This is what happens when you have less people leaving … whether by graduating or for other reasons. And this is why average commit score is important.

  46. BTW, Abanikanda, Henningham, Addison and Bardon are all rated 4* players on other recruiting sites aside from Rivals. Also, stars matter but they are not the be all and end all. All the players coming back we are all jumping for joy for, Twyman, Jones, Hamlin, Ford, Weaver and Camp. 2 were 4* and the other four were not. Weaver, Camp, Jones and Twyman. This is a solid team coming back. I’ll hold Narduzzi accountable for a team that doesn’t win at least nine games.

        There’s a lot of space in between the the two ends and most folks that I read in this site are in that space.

        That you have reached you conclusion on him before may others is understood and respected. But I fail to see where rooting for him to succeed makes anyone a Duzz-lover. Most here just want a winning football program and if the guy who brings it to us is a bit lacking in social graces at times, I’m OK with that.

    Like last season, this season’s success will depend heavily on us finding two decent, at least average, offensive tackles. We didn’t do so well in that department last season.

    We do have possibilities. Unless he makes a giant leap, I don’t see Warren being an answer— just seems too slow in the feet to me…

    Two possibles are Van Lynn and Houy, who will both be R-Jrs.

    Then we have the two who will be redshirt freshmen — Matt Goncalves and Liam Dick. Both were listed around 6-6 and 300 pounds. They seem to have the body-type for tackles.

    (BTW, Warren was listed as 6-5 and 320# — maybe the new strength coach can slim him down some…)

  55. Great to hear BigB has landed safely in Durham.

    John, there is a competent offensive line on this team as is although it would be nice to sign a transfer but you want to keep the campers happy at home at the same time. Don’t forget that the young guys are more experience than last year. imo, Warren wasn’t horrible but he does need a little coaching up and some more work in the training room. I’m not as concerned as others are. Running backs will be better as well. I got a deal with Dan72, sooooo lets see ?????

    1. ike — we look decent on the interior with Morrisey, Hargrove and Kradel.

      I think our OLine recruiting a couple years back seemed to go for giant humans, with less concern about nimbleness. And we’re paying the price now at OT.

      I remember freshman OT Goncalves getting some good comments last season — maybe he can be a contributor.

  58. How is it possible that we are this terrible offensively??? We are still in the game theoretically. But our ineptitude has nothing to do with Duke, and everything to do with our incompetence. Just awful.
